Billy and Mr. Morris are driving in the desert when they spot a gas station and have their tank filled (back one an attendant would do the filling). They drive a few miles further but surprisingly their tank runs dry and they find themselves among a group of cars in the same situation. As if things weren't bad enough a sandstorm whips up and Billy is forced to transform to Capt. Marvel. Marvel pushes all the cars a hundred miles out of the sandstorm and then flies back and punches out the owner of the gas station. He goes to demolish the station but it disappears. Turns out this fellow is 'The Mirage Master' who uses a machine to create images. Cap pursues him but spots a giant lizard attacking a man and stops to perform a rescue. Unsurprisingly it's a mirage and when he catches The Mirage Master's car it is also a mirage.

The Mirage Master continues to rob people using mirages. Cap follows a trail of crimes and locates The Mirage Master in a car but the crook points out a bursting dam which Marvel ignores as another mirage. Except this disaster is real and was created by the criminal (and how he did it I don't know since Marvel just now caught up to him). The sound of the water changes his mind and he moves a mountain to work as a makeshift dam and he follows The Mirage Maker to another town finding him selling jewelry. Cap delivers a punch but it turns out this jewelry is real and The Mirage Master is released because apparently one non crime wipes out previous crimes, go figure.

Predictably Cap changes to Billy to catch The Mirage Master unaware and even more predictably Billy is knocked out and left to die. Billy escapes and transforms back to Capt. Marvel. The Mirage Master is in another town trying to swindle people but no one is paying attention. Turns out the entire town is a mirage created by Capt. Marvel using an enormous lens. The Mirage Master is punched for a third time and hauled to jail.

"The World's Mightiest Circus"
(Script) Otto Binder
(Pencils/Inks) Pete Costanza?

Billy Batson is excited because the circus is in town. He decides to transform into Capt. Marvel to make sure the circus is coming to town on time. It turns out Billy was right to change because the circus caravan is right in the way if an avalanche. Cap rescues the caravan. The circus owner tells Cap they're way behind schedule so he decides to pitch in and help but it turns out the avalanche was no accident.

Cap sets up the big tent and then entertains the crowds with his feats of strength followed by a fire breathing act. Marvel continues his act until some fellow tosses a bomb into the crowd which Capt Marvel proceeds to grab up and swallow. While people aren't looking Cap punches out the bomb thrower. Turns out the villain is the Great Gambor, the trapeze artist who fell and lost his nerve. Later, Billy is given a lifetime pass which is pretty much the most abrupt ending I have ever read in a Capt. Marvel story.

"The Unholy Spider"
(Script) Otto Binder

A scientist drinks a formula he created a becomes a disgusting little spider. The Dean of the university and professor Edgewise enters his office and the Dean wants to get rid of Dr. Brewer for his 'silly experiments'. They leave and Brewer transforms back with intentions of killing the two. That night Brewer, as a spider, enters the Dean's room with a syringe. The Dean screams loud enough for Billy Batson to hear and he arrives as Capt. Marvel. Marvel rushes the Dean to the hospital thinking he's out of his head but it's too late and the Dean dies. Marvel mentions to the doc that the Dean was screaming about a spider but the doc says he died from strychnine,

Marvel heads out to tell professor Edgewise but he spots a spider approaching with a syringe and scares it off. He flies back towards the hospital and spots a giant spider. He grabs the Dr. Brewer but by that point he's fully transformed back and a confused Capt. Marvel let's him go. Later Brewer is sitting in his study when he starts to transform without taking the formula. It takes awhile for Brewer to change back and meanwhile a newspaper runs an article about his disappearance. When he does reappear Marvel tries to ask him some questions but he jumps out a window, Marvel searches but Brewer has once again transformed. They find the syringes and strychnine in Brewers office. In the last panel it is shown that Brewer comes to a grisly end devoured be a female spider.
