Owner's Description

A 9.8 WP SS Copy. A Direct Edition Issue.
Currently worth 211 CGC points, the highest points for this issue.

CENSUS: 353 in 9.8 with 51 SS copies in 9.8. That's 33 more than 2016, mainly since Frank Miller began to sign.
As of November 2018.

CENSUS: as of June 2016.
267 copies in 9.8. Many new copies per year since 2013. ALL the issues from 170 to 191 are generally available on EBay or the auction houses every month.
209 more copies in 9.6 out of 752 graded copies. That's still alot.
35 SS copies. 18 graded at 9.8. Popular due to the Punisher vs. Daredevil cover. I think mine is the only, or at least one of the few, SS by Miller. And it was autographed in 2011, long before the current convention scene.
All the other autographs are primarily by Stan Lee and Klaus Janson.
This cover had no advertising. Yeah! And the "The Man Without Fear" sub-title and the larger Daredevil font seemingly are here to stay.
There were separate Direct Issues and Newstand variants for issue number 183 and this pattern follows through the entire Daredevil Miller era run. I have been told the numbers of direct edition vs. newstand versions ranged proportionally 60-40 to 70-30 for each type, depending on the issue.
The newstand variants are much rarer in high grade, as they lived their life on a heavily fondled newstand, not in a direct edition mailer. This ratio also varies, with approximately one out of five (some issues one out of 20!) issues being graded 9.8 as the rarer Newstand Variant. Newstand Variants are hard to get.
Newstand variants have the price in a square box next to the issue number at the top of the letter box, the direct editions have the price and issue number in a diamond shape within the letter box.
Returns to a normal size comic with a new price of 60 cents. Probably some UK variants too.

VALUE:
Expect to pay $100 for a basic 9.8WP Copy, easily more if excellent structure and more again if signed. And add a premium for the “Newstand Variant”, generally sold for around $200 now. The Newstands seem to be rare with this issue.
Signed copies do look good with that yellow label...
I have seen no sketches on any SS copy, but expect one sooner or later.

ISSUE TITLE "Child's Play".

STORY LINE:
Someone is peddling Angel Dust to children in schools and reaping a string of profit and innocent deaths. Daredevil is thrown straight into this horrible world as a girl he saves succumbs to the drug's effects. He and the Punisher are both after the dealers but both have very different methods.
NOTES and TRIVIA:
This issue was originally meant to be published in Daredevil #167, but ran afoul of the comics code due to the drug content. It was re-worked and presented here under Code guidelines. A reference to this story arc is referred to in Daredevil #169 as the "Angel Dust Murders". It is also the first meeting between Daredevil and Punisher and later Matt Murdock proposes to Heather Glenn. Lots to think about.

Published every month now.
First published in June 1982.
