"...The Mauler!"

Matt and Heather attend a party for businessman Edwin Cord, who is quickly portrayed as a corrupt businessman. During the party, an armored man calling himself as "the Mauler" appears and attempts to kill Cord. Matt changes to Daredevil and defends Cord, until the police arrive. The Mauler has no interest in fighting either of them and leaves.

During his interview with the police, Matt learns that Cord has an unusually high Federal security clearance, freeing him from answering any questions. Despite his general disgust with Cord, there is nothing that Matt can legally do about the situation. Later that night, however, Daredevil pays Cord a visit at his office. Under pressure, Cord admits that his attacker was Aaron Soames, a disgruntled employee. The armor he was using was a prototype of the Mobile Armored Utility Emitter, Revised (MAULER). Daredevil knows he's not telling him the complete truth, but decides to let it slide for now.

He returns to Cord Industries the next night to wait for the Mauler. His hunch pays off as the Mauler soon arrives and attacks Cord. Daredevil once again saves Cord, but in the process he learns the truth behind Soames dismissal. Due to a computer error, the elderly Soames was unable to collect his pension. At his age, he is unable to gain any serious employment. His savings are tied up in the lawsuit against Cord, which won't occur for another year.

Soames once again makes his way to Cord and symbolically destroys his driver's license and credit cards. He is then gunned down by Cord's security force. When Daredevil finds Cord, he is reminded that since Cord works for the government, technically he hasn't done anything illegal. In addition if the existence of the suit is revealed, it would be a breach of national security. With his hands tied, Daredevil responds to Cord's statements the only way he can: knocking him out.

Out of respect for Soames, Matt attends his funeral. Sadly he is one of the three attendees.
