Story Title: Away Game!

Summary:

Illyana and the other New Mutants have been trapped in a room by Emma Frost (The White Queen) at the Hellfire Club while attempting a rescue of Kitty Pryde and Doug Ramsey.

Magma serves up a bright flash and causes an earthquake that doesn't seem to affect the Massachusetts Academy above, but causes a blackout in the underground Club. When the grunts get the lights back up the kids are gone!

The White Queen decides to handle the muties herself. She has placed psychic inhibitors in Kitty's brain to prevent her from using her phasing ability. Emma Frost explains to Kitty about the Hellfire Club's desire to use Mutants to eventually control the world, whether the mutants like it or not!

Meanwhile, the kids are holed up in a storeroom where they examine their options when going up against a strong telepath like the White Queen. They wind up capturing a couple of female guards. Dani uses her ability to scare them into giving them the information they need. Dani is troubled about her talent being used to hurt people rather than help them.

Dani and Illyana don the guards outfits and go off to rescue Kitty while Sam and Amara burn thru the floor and head off to destroy the generator that powers the whole complex. They succeed, plunging the place into darkness.

Sam and Amara enter into the dorms from outside to find Doug but are spotted by an overhead unit who reports to the White Queen. Dani and Illyana are also in the dorms looking for Kitty. They are being followed by an unseen assailant.

Elsewhere, Rahne and Bobby are also looking for Kitty but instead find Thunderbird (James Proudstar-1st appearance) and Roulette, two members of the Hellions who incapacitate them for the time being. T-Bird with strength and Roulette with bad luck.

Meanwhile Dani and Illyana face off against two other members of the Hellions, Catseye and Tarot. Sam and Amara face off against Empath (Manuel Rodrigo De La Rocha, whew!) and Jetstream.

Thanks to Doug showing up, Sam manages to break through Empath's spell and takes him down but then has to deal with Jetstream, which he does by blastin' away at the last second. After an elongated back-and-forth, Sam and Amara are victorious!

Doug witnesses the fight and is shocked at the powers of the others, but then the White Queen shows up and manages to easily subdue them with images of what they trust the most. For Amara, her mother, and for Sam, an acquiescent Amara. she also mind-wipes Doug and makes him go back to his room.

Illyana And Dani manage to barely overcome Tarot and Catseye and escape by way of one of Illyana's teleportation discs. Emma Frost contemplates Magik's ability and the fact that she can't sense them with her telepathic powers, and decides to fill in Sebastian Shaw on the situation...

To be continued in issue #17...!

Personal Comments:

This was an action packed issue! Each pair of New Mutants were paired up against a pair of the Hellions. Some with success and some not.

It was very interesting seeing the Hellions abilities and personalities. T-Bird seemed to have a conscience, while Empath was a narcisistic monster who didn't seem to care what happened to others. There wasn't really enough shown about the other members yet for me to have any conclusions about them. Maybe in future issues.

Dani's contemplation of the goodness of her powers was particularly touching. Was she any better than the White Queen?

Little did I know that this first look at James Proudstar would eventually grow into his becoming a New Mutants member himself, and beyond!

This was a heated battle that I wasn't sure the kids would ultimately win. It wasn't looking good by the end, with no real rescue, and only Illyana and Dani getting away!

What would become of the other New Mutants? I would have to wait until the next issue to find out!.....

SUCH TENSION!!!!!
