Issue #41 features yet another tough black cover-I guess they were intended to give us a feel for the darkness of the deep ocean. "The Trail of the Ring" continues the story started in Issue #40. After Aquaman returns empty-handed, he asks Zancol, an undersea traveller, about the five-sided ring. Zancol replies that such rings can be found in the land of the Maarzons, three days' journey from Atlantis, except for one direction, through the perilous, unexplored Depths, which will cut his journey down to one day's duration. On his way, Aquaman first encounters strange yellow gnome-creatures who telepathically induce fish to batter him. Then he comes upon a strange city, where he kills a glowing monster who was about to devour a woman and is arrested for it. Aquaman learns that the monsters provide the city with heat and light, and are allowed to kill the occasional human in return. Before he can be imprisoned, Aquaman breaks free, jumps astride another monster, and rides it out of town, threatening to kill it if the populace doesn't allow him to leave. Once in the clear, Aquaman leaves the monster, jumps on his sea horse, and resumes his journey. Once again, to be continued…..
Our 9.6 comes from the Pacific Coast Collection, which is generally considered to be the greatest Silver Age collection to ever surface. It was brought to market by Robert Roter after he discovered portions of it for sale on E-Bay in 1999. The books were marketed through PCE over the next several years and contained over 7,000 comics and magazines that included Marvel, DC, and Gold Key among others, covering a time span between 1961 and 1977. Many of the highest graded Marvel and DC issues from the early '60s hail from this collection with exceptional page quality. The books do not exhibit any distinguishing markings.
Our book is currently the single highest graded example in the census. We acquired this book in May 2023 from a friend and fellow collector in a trade of books.*
