I had to introduce this set with one of Shatner's most famous lines because the book that kicked this set off is, of course, the Wrath of Khan #1 variant cover.
For many, many years I had no real interest in collecting Star Trek comics. Though I was a big fan of most of the series, it had never really crossed my mind.
Then Rich Henn had a signing with Nicholas Meyer. Director of "Wrath of Khan" Nicholas Meyer. At first I didn't have the slightest idea why that mattered, until I used this fine interweb of ours to find some insight about how much of an impact he had on redefining the Star Trek movie franchise. OK, I'm in.
Then Rich says "oh by the way, I can add Shatner too." I start counting the green as I mutter "Damnit Rich..."
So as I clearly "blame" Rich for this endeavor, I obviously moreso thank him because at heart I love the Star Trek franchise. And when you think about it, collecting some signatures from my favorite series only makes sense. I don't think I'll make much effort to complete the whole comic set, but there are some great covers that I think jive up well with my Signature Series goals. So even though we've sadly lost some of the most key players far too soon (DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, and Leonard Nimoy), I hope to assemble all that I can from my personal favorites -- the original series, TNG, DS9, and the reboot cast. We'll see how it goes.
