"First Sighting - The Man of Steel" Jonathan Kent suffers a massive heart attack and is taken to the hospital. As doctors labor to save him, Jonathan's spirit leaves his body and he experiences visions of his past. He recalls being a soldier in the Korean War, trying to save the life of a downed airman. He sees his brother Harry, dressed in military fatigues, and knows that something is wrong. Harry Kent died in a farming accident in Smallville, not in Korea. He discovers that the man he is trying to rescue, is not some mysterious downed airman, but his son - Superman. He finds Clark's soul-self, but Clark is ready to go on to the afterlife. Jonathan won't allow it. Desperately, he pleads with Clark and tells him that it is not his time. Moments later, the true architect behind Jonathan's visions reveals herself - Blaze. Blaze is trying to sever the spiritual cord between Jonathan and Clark. She barters for Jonathan's soul, but he refuses. Kismet appears and leads Jonathan down the proper spiritual path - one that takes him to a facsimile of the planet Krypton where Clark is part of an elaborate Kryptonian funeral procession. Clark finds himself engaged in a tug of war between Jonathan and his birth-father Jor-El. Jonathan dispels the image of Jor-El and pulls Clark back to safety. Suddenly, Jonathan comes to on the hospital operating table. His wife and the attending physicians try to calm him down, but he manages to tell Martha that he has brought Clark back. In Metropolis, Gangbuster breaks up a drug deal only to learn that he has inadvertently disrupted a sting operation. The police try to arrest him, but Gangbuster runs off. One of the officers opens fire on him, and a bullet strikes Gangbuster in the shoulder. He dives off a building into Hob's Bay and swims away. He resurfaces later and finds a man named Bibbo Bibbowski. Bibbo invites him to come to his place to rest. Rumors and reports begin circulating that Superman has returned to Metropolis. Lois Lane is dubious, but has to learn the truth for herself. She contacts Inspector Henderson and they go to Centennial Park to inspect Superman's tomb beneath his memorial statue. When they arrive, they are shocked to discover that Superman's coffin is empty.

"Countdown To Doomsday!" Justice League members Ice and Maxima look at the fallen Blue Beetle, with Ice saying that Blue Beetle needs medical treatment and Maxima saying their top priority is to stop the creature. Ice offers to go after the monster herself, which Maxima refuses to let her do until she remembers Ice aiding her in her struggles against Starbreaker, and so she takes Blue Beetle to receive his medical care while Ice goes after the monster.
At the same time, high school student Mitch comes home to find that there's no soda in the refrigerator, and that his mother was too busy taking care of his baby sister to even have time to get any groceries. Mitch becomes so upset, blaming his mother for being the reason his father left her, that he prepares to go over to his friend's house when Justice League member Ice crashes right into their kitchen. Mitch goes outside and finds the green-suited monster the Justice League was contending with earlier, now trashing their car. Superman and Booster Gold also show up, and while Superman is able to take a powerful fist blow into the midsection by the monster now called Doomsday, a sudden unexpected kick in the gut propels him through the house, causing it to collapse.
Doomsday now trudges his way into the house and is ready to kill Mitch's mother and her baby daughter, but Superman stops him, telling the mother to get out of the house. Soon other Justice League members Bloodwynde, Fire, and Guy Gardner with a puffed-up face join the action, and the five heroes strike Doomsday with energy blasts until all but Superman and Bloodwynde run out of power. However, the energy blasts do nothing but cause Doomsday's bands around his other arm to break, thus enabling him to cause damage with both his fists. The monster grabs Booster Gold, shreds up his costume, and pummels him so severely that he throws him against a weakened Guy Gardner.
Superman and Bloodwynde try to take on Doomsday simultaneously, but the monster grabs Bloodwynde just as he is about to use his eye beams, causing them to strike near the gas lines and also causing a fiery eruption that consumes the house in flames. With his mother and baby sister trapped inside, and the Justice League members fallen, Mitch cries out for Superman to help. But Superman is chasing after Doomsday, and he must decide what to do: either go after the monster and risk the lives of Mitch's family and his own allies, or let the monster go to rescue them and risk the lives of many more people.

"Metropolis Mailbag II" On the rooftop of the Daily Planet, the Justice League and other heroes gather so they can do one last thing to honor Superman. On the streets below, Mitch Anderson trudges in the rain, feeling sorry for himself. He's come to Metropolis to apologize to someone close to Superman, feeling it was his fault that Superman died. There, he finds a woman proclaiming to be "Mrs. Superman", only for Lois, who had attended, to blow up at her and march off, leaving the attending Jimmy alone. Jimmy notices Mitch and somewhat recognizes him. The two talk before Jimmy offers to get him something to eat, which he accepts. In Clark's apartment, Lois regrets her blowup and begins to breakdown before finding Jonathan and Martha had just arrived with Lana to help her out. In the Metropolis Post Office, the gathered heroes notice all the letters left for Superman and in total awe (except for Guy Gardner). As they start reading some of the letters, a lot of them outrageous, Guy discovers a letter from a sickly woman, begging to be reunited with her son before she passes. Dr. Light convinces Guy to do so, which he reluctantly does. Wonder Woman discovers a letter written by one woman (Mitch's mother), thanking Superman for saving their lives after Doomsday destroyed their house. She recruits Green Lantern and Flash to help her out. At the Hobb's Bay Grille, Mitch laments his story to Jimmy and Bibbo, though Bibbo tries to reassure Mitch it wasn't his fault. Mitch feels that he had jinxed and had wanted to come to Metropolis to apologize when he learned of the "Mrs. Superman" before turning to his rage over his divorced father. The two men decide to take Mitch somewhere to do what he needs to do with Bibbo giving Mitch enough money to fly back home. In Clark's apartment, Lois, Lana, Martha and Jonathan decide that, when it comes to it, the world must never know Superman and Clark Kent were one and the same. At an apartment complex, Wonder Woman discovers Roger Anderson, Mitch's father. When he attempts to shun her away, she reveals that his family had been attacked by Doomsday, which floors him. She tells him why she's here and wants to help him and his family on Christmas day. As she does, Nightwing, Maxima and Guy help others their own way. At the Superman Memorial, Mitch finally makes his peace with Superman while, back at his home, Flash and Green Lantern repair his home, much to the surprise of his mother and baby sister. To her surprise, Wonder Woman arrives with Roger, who realizes he was an idiot for abandoning them and wants to be a family again. Underneath the Superman Memorial, Paul Westfield has done it: Superman's body is his.

"Ghosts" Lois Lane is having a horrible nightmare about not being able to save Superman, when Perry White phones her telling her that Metropolis is flooding. Down in the underground tunnels, the Underworlders are trying to get to higher ground. The Newsboy Legion, likewise, tell Guardian and Dubbilex about the flooding, and are disturbed to see Superman's body being experimented on. Jonathan and Martha return to Smallville. Jonathan is still grieving heavily from the loss of his son and begins losing himself in memories. The Underworlders figure out that a Cadmus explosive charge is to blame for the flooding. With the likes of the Superman cult and the various women who have come out as Superman's "love", Lois wishes there was some way to preserve his legacy. In Gotham City, Alfred mentions the flooding to Batman and both men agree Metropolis could use Superman. Looking at the kryptonite ring in the Batcave, Batman wonders if he should get rid of it, but decides against it because of it's symbolism of Superman's trust in him. Lois comes across Maggie Sawyer at Centennial Park, who tells Lois about the previous night's events. A short time later the Underworlders find Lois and give her definitive proof that Cadmus is to blame for the flood and they have Superman's body. Lois and the Underworlders invade Cadmus to take back the body. The Newsboy Legion comes along to help, but the alarm is triggered before they can move the body. Lois has enough proof to write a story about the whole events, in a way to do something to honor the Man of Steel. In Smallville, Jonathan Kent reads Lois' story. His feelings of the inability to protect his son cause Jonathan to have a heart attack in Martha's arms.
