Ahh...Showcase 37...The very first appearance of Dr. Will Magnus and his Metal Men (key word "his"...hmm). The Grail Grail of Metal Men. SC37 cost me some coin...although only half of my MM1 9.6 WP. This is an insanely beautiful comic with deep colors and white pages. It graded 8.5 because of a lower right printer crease and minor top chipping. I've seen many SC 37's with creases. I saw a auction 9.0 with more creases and color fading, so my copy should be a 9.0...then again, I am no grader!! Seems the SC37s paper quality was poor as many are in bad shape and disintegrating. I have raw poor copy and a good 6.0 reading copy. I owned a CGC 6.5 and a 8.0, which I sold to help acquire the 8.5. I don't have SC37-40 in a bound volume set, but looking for them.
This is the appearance of the "Flaming Doom", although it's not actually named, which is a a giant prehistoric Manta Ray...certainly no Godzilla!! Manta attacks the Chrysler Building in NYC, and has heat vision.

This is an upgrade from my 9.4 and has striking deep colors and white pages. The only distraction is the Newton Rings (Rainbow Effect) from the case and mylar sleeve. Pretty easy to find in high grades, although pricey.

Update: 12/17/25. I "Litrallee" don't see a CGC 9.0 SC39 anymore. It's been this way for years. As you notice below, I acquired my 8.5 in 2014. So...trying to get my grubby little hands on even a 9.0 has been impossible for 11 years. I shall perservere!!
This was not a difficult issue to obtain, but I have not seen a SC 39 for sale or auction above 8.5 (last one sold on Heritage, Oct 7, 2025) since a 9.0 sold in 2014. This is my earliest graded MM issue, and it is the first appearance of the villain Chemo. You will see this cover again as a reprint in Metal Men 42. This is the first time "Responsometer" was used as the name for the microchip responsible for giving the Metal Men their Souls...their unique personalities and life from being a pile of metal.

Well, I had to do it...after 5 years, I decided to upgrade my MM registry set!! The SC40 rarely ever comes up. I have only seen one 9.2 and one 9.4 in auction in the past 4 years. Normally I would shy away from a Cream to Off-White pages graded copy, but I had to nab it. I also own a 9.0 OWW pages. Nice copy, but telltale tanning along the edges...then again this comic is from 1962. Overall, I can tell the differences from the 9.0 to the 9.2 in defects. Page color is a real debate among collectors. Some won't touch anything below OWW. I have softened a bit, thinking more of the comic itself and it's rarity/age. Also, you can't even examine the pages, to see the color, so why worry. I did see the grading notes indicating small Lite tanning in the right center. Overall, I am very pleased with this copy, and the 2nd Gen CGC holder is in great shape.

2023 Update:
This is my Metal Men Holy Grail and most expensive issue. It was 1 of 3 CGC 9.6s with White pages, but I see there are now 10 9.6s in the census, so hard to say. I own the only Pacific Coast Pedigree 9.4 WP. I believe this copy should grade a 9.6. My CGC collection began with a 9.0 MM 1 in 2006 This was my first CGC Registry Set entry in
2011...the rest is history!!
Synopsis: MM 1 Begins with a Metal Men Family picture with Dr. Will Magnus, their creator. Then, as usual, Tina (Platinum) goes berserk and is thrown into a science museum as punishment. Will takes the boys out for a flight on his UFO looking ship and sees Missiles raining down on a gas storage tank. Four of the Metal Men are melted trying to put out the fire, with only Mercury still alive. Dr. Magnus remakes Gold, Iron, Lead and Tin in his lab. Peppered in the story are ads for a Tootsie Roll rocket and Missile Attack toy (makes sense). Also is an interesting page on Metal "Facts and Fancies". So...Tina is released from the museum...they find a fragment of the missiles showing they are robots. In outer space, we find an uncontrollable robot named Z-1 is wreaking havoc. He wants to build a queen to rule with himl, but only succeeds in building endless duplicates. Z-1 searches the galaxy for his queen and sees Platinum (Tina) on earth. Wow...what a powerful telescope. He sends his missile men to earth and starts destroying ever major landmark and wonder of the world. The Metal Men valiantly battle the missile men to no avail. Dr. Magnus shoots a Magnetizing Ray at them which gathers the missie men into a giant ball and drops them into the ocean. The Metal Men then monitor the giant missile men ball periodically. The story had 4 parts. Also a really cool mailbag section called "Metal Scraps" in the middle of MM 1. People loved the educational aspect of MM 1 in their responses.

I also own an original Metal Men #1 cover re-creation by Mike Esposito and Ross Andru, which is a 22" x 15" watercolor in exact detail. Mike Esposito did commissions in his later years, and this one is signed by both artists but undated. I had this artwork professionally framed, and it is the centerpiece for my comic collection. Nuff Said!!

Metal Men 2 introduces the "Robots of Terror", including Aluminum, Barium, Calcium, Plutonium, Sodium and Zirconium. These Metal Men were created by the Fake Will Magnus robot created by Tina (Platinum). I had a chance to buy a 9.4 but passed on it.

Metal Men 3 brings back our Tina (Platinum) but Tin is left in orbit around the earth at the end. The villain in this issue is a space amoeba. Not sure why GGC put "atomic explosion panel" on the label. Yes, there is an atomic explosion on the moon on page 3. Interesting at the end of Metal Men 2, readers were asked to drop a postcard if they wanted to see Tina return...and she did!! Looks like the first time we see "Starring the Unique...Metal Men" in the title on cover.

Metal Men 5 is simply INSANE to try to find ANY CGC grade period. That is why I only have a 8.5. This one has a beautiful purple cover with the John G. Fantucchio Pedigree, so I am lucky. I do remember a 9.4 on auction in 2020, but it went for a ridiculous amount of money. The MM5 story is a continuation of the Tin Amazons and Robot Queen with the Metal Men returning to Earth. The Gas Gang is introduced at the end by way of "Metal Facts and Fancies".

Metal Men 6 has is my favorite cover besides MM 1. I loved the Gas Gang...nothing better than Bad Gas!! The villains were Carbon Dioxide, Carbon Monoxide, Chloroform, Helium and Oxygen. This is also where we see Doc Magnus turn into a robot. I also own a 6.5 originally acquired as a hole filler. This was a difficult issue to find at first, but in recent years, at least 3 have shown up in auction. This is the Twin Cities Pedigree copy, so brilliant colors with a deep green. Love this issue!!

This issue was somewhat difficult for me to acquire, and it was the only graded one I had seen until the 2020 auction of one of the top 3 Metal Men registry sets. I am lukewarm on the cover. There is an ad for Hawkman #1 in this issue, but I have to admit, I never bought a copy of Hawkman when I was a kid.

Wow...the MM8 cover has alot going on in the "Playground of Terror". I had a hard time finding a higher grade copy, and upgraded from a 9.0 WP, which I still own. This issue has the Metal Men going to a planet with a deserted amusement park full of evil robot rides...too funny. This issue carries over into MM 9 where the boy known as Timmy is mistakenly called Billy.
