Fat Freddy's Cat (1976) 1st Series

Fat Freddy's Cat first appeared in 1969 in underground newspapers as a character in The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers strip. He soon gained his own small spin-off topper strip, in imitation of the early Krazy Kat strips below The Family Upstairs by George Herriman. Some full-size stories also featured Fat Freddy's Cat.

Many of these strips have been collected in comic book form by Rip Off Press in a series of The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers compilations and later The Adventures of Fat Freddy's Cat, which ran for four small size issues in the 1970s. Fat Freddy's Comics and Stories (one-shot, 1983) also included several stories about the Cat.

The Adventures of Fat Freddy's Cat were reprinted and expanded (starting over from #1) in six comic book size issues in the 1980s. They included new longer stories about the Cat. A seventh edition was released (in the US only) in 1993. After the demise of the underground newspaper, the Cat continued to appear in various comic books. His last appearance to date was in a 1990 strip reprinted in The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers #12.Fat Freddy's Cat is much smarter than Freddy, and while sharing many of his preoccupations such as drugs, food, sleep and sex, his stories also feature a fair amount of defecation. Like Garfield (whom he predates) he is laid back, but in his personal habits and outlook he is more like the Freak Brothers. However he tends to regard the Freak Brothers with amused contempt, frequently expressed by defecating in inappropriate and inconvenient places, such as stereo headphones.

Like Calvin of Calvin and Hobbes he has a fertile imagination. He is apt to tell tall stories to his three "nephews". One storyline features him playing the role of "F. Frederick Skitty", an undercover agent sworn to stop the distribution of "Tee Hee Hee", a drug that turns people into homosexuals.[Fat Freddy's Cat Issue 1] Another story involves a scheme by Fat Freddy to replicate Dick Whittington's success and sell the Cat to the (fictional) small, oil-rich nation of Pootweet to deal with mice[Fat Freddy's Cat Issue 5] [source: Wikipedia]

Fat Freddy's Cat was my first encounter with underground comics. I read some issues that I purchased at a head shop, off the newstand in Ann Arbor, Michigan at their Annual Street Art Fair back when it was first published in digest form, I was around 9 or 10 at the time which makes me think I probably shouldn't have been reading that kind of thing! I wish I would've bought and preserved a bunch of copies when I had the chance as they're extremely difficult to come by in great shape, especially the first printings. His iconic look is what first caught my attention and the type of humor was certainly different than what I was used to at the time. I hope you enjoy browsing through my descriptions and scanned images as I am intent on creating a world class set!

Synopsis: 01/76 Fat Freddy's Cat opens the issue talking to the reader about how he wasn't always Fat Freddy's Cat. He relates how he used to be a Secret Agent, F. Frederick Skitty (Fat Freddy's Cat with a mustache). He is awakened by his emergency red phone ringing which startles his busty, human, female secretary that is laying naked next to him with the sheets covering her lower body. He is summoned to his bosses office. He heads there and gives him the password by hand as the man states he shouldn't be there without an appointment (he karate chops him). F Frederick Skitty then enters his bosses office and taps him on the opposite shoulder and when he looks, he cuts off his tie from the other side. His boss says they're under attack from within by someone threatening their water supply with a dangerous drug that turns eveyrone queer called "Hee Hee Hee". He proceeds to fly over the mountains in his secret jet and parachutes into a nudist colony thinking it's the headquarters of the secret mountain drug factory. The nudists say if he wants to stay there he'll have to strip down. He thinks to himself that if he does that they'll see his guns so he cuts loose of the parachute and dashes to their mansion headquarters. Upon entering, two nude, busty women say they want to help him get over his "hangups" but he pulls out his gun and shoots them saying he'd normally "indulge" them but it's a matter of national security then proceeds to shoot all the other nudists. Upon seeing the address, he figures out he landed at the wrong place and was off by 2 numbers. He makes it to the actual lair and sees a guy carrying a garbage can full of garbage and thinks it's one of the bad guys disguising the drug, "Hee Hee Hee" as an ordinary can of garbage so he kills him. Then the real bad guy jumps out all prancy and says the fool killed the garbage man and says he already released the drug in the coffee supply. He then tells his henchmen to off F. Frederick Skitty which causes him to go into action and he shoots all of the bad guys and goes back to headquarters to tell his boss the bad news. His boss says maybe it wasn't such a bad drug afterall as he sips his coffee and says "hee hee hee" F Frederick Skitty shoots him to put him out of his misery then turns the gun on himself and when his nephews ask if he shot himself he says "of course, I still had 8 lives" The rest of the issue is Fat Freddy's Cat and his antics with eating the Freak Brother's pot plants, peeing on their stuff, pooping in outrageous places like a hanging plant and battling against cockroaches and interacting with them and mice before going on adventures outdoors until his owner, Fat Freddy, once again finds him after 3 days and says he once had a striped orange cat..but he guesses this one will do.

Synopsis: 02/76 Fat Freddy's Cat is telling his nephews about the time he saved the world from Aliens. It starts off with Phineas Phreak returning from the carnival with Fat Freddy after winning a stuffed pig in overalls after spending $26 in quarters. The pig has a pull string music box that sings "Old MacDonald" when pulled. Fat Freddy exclaims his cat could do that too if he had a music box in him. Phineas and Freewheelin' Franklin grab him and hold up a knife. Fat Freddy panics and they tell him they weren't going to cut open the cat. They just intend to put the music box from the pig in some overalls and cut a hole for Fat Freddy's Cat's tail. They put it on the cat and pull the string whuch causes Fat Freddy's Cat to freak out and leap into the air and around the room causing Fat Freddy's ice cream cone to land and lodge over Fat Freddy's Cat's head with the hotdog stuck on top reminiscent of a cresent moon. The cat tears out of the house and down the street. A spaceship with bloblike aliens with antennas coming out of their heads with eyeballs at the top abduct him. He can't tell what's going on but one of them exclaims "What's the matter, thexl got your tongue" which has the cat realizing he's probably in trouble. They pull his string and Old MacDonald starts to play. They recognize it as their national anthem. The cat poops and they find it on the floor and it is apparently the purest fuel they've ever seen. They surmise that he and the other inhabitants must be more advanced than they thought and they decide that they better not make him angry. They give him an amulet that grants him 3 wishes and a sacred gleek for his personal mount, all the while he still can't see anything with the ice cream on his head. They set him free on the gleek which looks like a jabberwocky (long ringed neck with dragon like head and 8 legs with two giant wings. His first wish is used up when he says "I wish I could see what's going on" and the ice cream disappears and he sees what he's flying on. His second wish is he wishes the gleek was stuffed and roasted so he could eat it since there's no way he could bring it back home with him. He struts back into the Freak Brother's home and Phineas exclaims that he looks fatter than ever and must've traded his overalls for what looks like a magic amulet. Fat Freddy puts the amulet on and exclaims "Well, I'll be dipped in d0gsh!t" with a grinning cat looking at him as he says it. The rest of the issue is a series of one pagers with Fat Freddy's Cat interacting with various animals and other cats. One overlaying theme involves the Freak Brothers thinking he messed with their stash and after they beat him up, he is laying on the floor and sees their stash being smoke by mice with the pipe etc laying on their mouse furniture. He stows away on their van as they take a trip to Mexico and interacts with the locals and wanders around lost til he is once again found and picked up by Fat Freddy who always happens to be driving by at the end of the issues and is happy that he "found his cat"

Synopsis: 10/76 Fat Freddy's cat is talking to his bored nephews about a time he too thought he was "bored." His story begins with Fat Freddy and the Freak Brothers dropping him off at a "Pet Resort" that looks like a country club on the outside. Once there, the guy doing the intake comments that he "can tell by their looks" that they won't be back for the cat. As they take him back they wonder if they can make a few tacos out of him and a fur hat. He tries to escape out the window but doesn't realize it is closed and smacks himself. When he lands he does a crazy dance that makes them reconsider and decide to spare him and give him as a gift to the Warden. They try to fatten him up and groom him ahead of time. He turns his nose at the "dog food" they try to feed him mentioning that he better cooperate or he'll be thrown to the dogs which convinces him after seeing the dogs fighting in the pen. They enter the Warden's office who has various animal heads mounted to his walls, many of them domestic pets. Upon gifting him to the Warden as a dancing cat, the Warden starts shooting at his feet to force him to dance and Fat Freddy's Cat jumps up on one of the heads of the people gifting him and digs in his claws. When they leave the bald guy whose head he mounted talks out loud about not wasting such a fine specimen on the Warden's target practice and instead thinks he'll be a fine specimen for genetic experiments which the cat thinks will mean breeding which makes him smile. He soon discovers that the intent is to splice other animal parts onto him instead of breeding. He hears the man say he's going to give him canary wings which causes him to freak out and end up hanging upside down by his claws on the ceiling. Before the scientist can proceed, there's an emergency in the dog pen with fighting. They throw Fat Freddy's Cat into the pen to distract the dogs who were jockeying for leadership. The main dog rushes at him to attack but he puffs up and has a gigantic tail that causes the main dog to go into cardiac arrest. All the dogs hail him as the new leader. He organizes them to dig a tunnel out of the compound and they comply. He has them take down a ceiling fan and set if up to act as a "ventilator" for the tunnel. He has them pull the rope wound upon it and to their surprise, he takes off straight up into the air as he duped the dogs as part of his grand scheme. He tells his nephews he then flew to Rio De Janeiro and caught up with the Freak Brothers and that flying was easy since he was a vtol pilot flying missions over Korea in a previous life, but that's another story. His nephews leave disgusted, commenting that they don't want to hear another stupid story. Fat Freddy's Cat continues on in the issue with a couple of other story lines involving his adventures around the house and then escaping and getting lost in the city but adopted by Dennis the Menace and all is looking up until Fat Freddy finds him and nabs him "look my old cat!" Fat Freddy puts him in a cage in the back of their camper as he and the other Freak Brothers head out to the wilderness. The rest of the story has bits and pieces of his adventure in the woods including playing with a snake he thought was a string and hiding out in the branches of a tree with other animals as a pack of domestic dog on the loose terrorize the wildlife. He has a conversation with a female lynx that he thinks wants to rape him. There are other on pagers interspersed throughout the issue.

Synopsis: 01/78 Fat Freddy's Cat is relating the story of how he was almost a famous movie star if not for his story being supressed for political reasons. Fat Freddy Freekowski is watching tv and sees a story where all the parts are played by birds which gives him an idea. He thinks he could easily write a better story than that and proceeds to borrow Freewheelin' Franklin's typewriter and then writes a store, "Disco Kitty Meets Meowbeasts of Mars" He finishes it and rushes to Hollywood with his cat. He first goes to Megalith studios where he is turned away despite pleas and begging. He tried to relate his story to them about dogfights with real dogs in space and cameos by Lassie and Flipper and of course the star is his "dancing" cat. They kick him out. He sees his dreams of an Oscar run away with a vision of an Oscar leaping from the base it was mounted to that he holds in his hands as it exclaims "you'll never catch me!" Next he tries to get on as a contestant at a quiz show but is turned away as he's not a member of the local quiz show union. Finally, he opts for an amateur talent show at the Clang Home Show (probably a reference to the Gong Show) where he enters with his ""dancing cat"" When it's his turn on stage, he puts his cat down and tells him to dance, calling his cat, "Digleford" The cat refuses to dance and in a thought cloud over Fat Freddy's Cat's head he is disgusted by that name and wants a better stage name. Fat Freddy gets mad and starts cussing and stomping all around the cat as he knows he's seen him dance a million times. They kick them out as they think it is the punkest act they've ever seen. Fat Freddy sees that his car has been towed and starts crying as he has no money and no car. The cat tries to comfort him which cheers him up. He enters his cat into a cat show with $1000 prize for a blue cat. Fat Freddy's Cat then tells his nephews that long story short, the fat fool tried to die him blue out in the brush but his campfire got out of control and ignited the art deco building like the hindenburg sending various cats on fire running that spread the fire. The cat lovers had to supress the story due to footage leaking of him spreading the fire to the local dog shelter. The rest of the issue consists of various on pagers about his wandering around the house, yard and neighborhood interacting with mice, roaches, his nephews, Fat Freddy and birds.

Synopsis:
Fat Freddy's Cat is telling his nephews the story of Dick Whittington, a common servant who was offered the opportunity to bring some personal belongings on one of his employers ships. He was blessed to be able to go on an Asian voyage and make money when he arrived in a country overrun with a plague of mice. Dick Whittington's only thing of value to trade was his cat. The Grand Yuhu was very grateful and with the help of his cat, he was able to amass a great fortune and become Lord Mayor of London. Fat Freddy's cat relates a similar situation that happened to himself and Fat Freddy. Apparently, Fat Freddy was watching the news and came up with the idea of trying to trick the Arab nations out of their money since they made so much money selling us oil. He devises a plan to introduce mice over there to breed and spread thus causing a plague like the situation Dick Whittington encountered. He would then sell his cat and get filthy rich. He goes to the petstore and asks for breeders to which the clerk points out that they're ""All Breeders"" When they arrive, customs quarantines Fat Freddy's Cat. Then Fat Freddy opens his suitcase and tells them they may wish to reconsider after he lets loose the 5000 mice in his suitcase. He opens it and dead mice fall out. All the people bemoan that they already have cats but it's against the law to kill furry creatures and the all bow down and do a chant over the dead. A religious figure shows up and condemns him to 500 lashes with their flyswatter which is really made of steel and over 40 pounds. Before it can happen, his cat decides to save the fat fool and yowls really loud. They let the cat out and he runs right for their sacred sands and wants to relieve himself to the horror of the religious person and all the citizenry. Apparently, it is foretold that a cat would defile their sacred sands thus bringing on the great plague of cat feces. They'd previously had armies stand guard to keep that from happening but scientists were able to creat cat commodes that they would use instead but now that Fat Freddy's Cat has desecrated the sands, all the other cats will want to use them too. Fat Freddy, quick on his feet, is able to act fast and pulls out some cat litter and grabs the religious Yuhu's hat and fills it with cat litter to which his cat quickly runs over to it and uses it instead. Fat Freddy then is able to sell them tons of cat litter and becomes rich and runs for Mayor of Cleveland and wins. The rest of the digest is Fat Freddy's Cat interacting with the Freak brothers, eating their plants and running around causing issues including snatching a 'good' angel of Fat Freddy's shoulder and shredding it when it was trying to convince him not to take the last beer from the fridge. He gets outside and interacts with other animals, destroys a scratching post Fat Freddy bought him and other such mischief.

Synopsis: Fat Freddy's Cat is talking to other cats about times when they've been left alone by their owners and the damage they've done to the homes, one-upping one another. Fat Freddy's Cat tells them about a time when his owners left him alone while they went to South America. He described it as paradise since he could sleep on the stove where it was warm, eat from a huge bag of food and had plenty of water from a running toilet with no people to get in the way. He then said it all changed when the other tenants had a meeting about cockroach infestations and decided to spray for them unbeknownst to the Freak Brothers who were out of the country. They couldn't access their apartment so after all the other apartments were sprayed, the tenants marveled that the roaches were gone and they couldn't even find any dead bodies. All the roaches had made their way to the Freak Brothers apartment as refugees. He proceeds to tell them about 2 factions, the communist roaches that inhabited other rooms and outnumbered the capitalist roaches that had plenty and lived in the kitchen. The two group opposed one another. When the other roaches came in, the capitalist ones accepted them as they could then require their military service and collect their taxes etc. The story poked fun at capitalism and how they can make the migrants do the crappy work and pay more sales tax but lower income tax and that they'd have to build up defenses and weapons and if they don't comply they'll throw them in jail...you get the picture. So the other cats call him out on it and say his story is getting a little allegorical. He then stops them there and says he's already sold the rights to Hollywood and they are having him come out and do script rewrites etc. The studio is hiring actors like Clint Eastwood, Jane Fonda, Jack Nicholson etc... to play the roles and dress up in giant cockroach outfits. When he meets with the studio head, he's told that he likes the idea of flying pigs but doesn't want to bore audiences with Communists and Capitalists so wants him to make it about Cowboys and Indians instead. The new plot involves Cowboys fighting Indians (all cockroaches by the way) at the Alamo when they're all attacked by aliens that then want to mutilate the cowboy's cows. The aliens disguise themselves as beautiful lady cockroaches but the cowboy roaches are too pure of heart and the Indian cockroaches are too psychically primitive to be hypnotized. The Indians sell their claim of the Alamo to the aliens for 24 dollars and a box of colored bottle caps. The aliens destroy the Alamo but the cowboys and Indians escape to the mountains and make a truce so they can counterattack the aliens. The cowboy cockroaches wait it out til technology can catch up. In the meantime all the cowboys' horses run away when they hear what happened to the cows and then a group of Indian braves find a cache of radio controlled surface to air missiles left behind by a previous civilization and together, the cowboys and Indians attack the aliens and in the process set off a chain reaction of the alien vessels which kills all life on Earth, but not before the cowboys travel back in time with a handful of Indians to do their labor since they developed a time machine during all of this. Then back in time all is well and flying pigs salute the leader of the capitalists who has transformed into a handsome prince. Flashback to reality where he relates that the real ending wasn't so great and that there were more refugee roaches than originally thought and they had to put them in refugee camps and then all food was eaten so they tied a can of what they thought was insecticide onto the cat's tail and cut off the top but roaches can't read and it turns out it was whipped cream. Fat Freddy's cat panicked and ran all over til he crashed into Phineas' chemical lab equipment and it caused a reaction with the whipped cream that killed all the roaches and turned them into mutants the size of skateboards. Fat Freddy's Cat escapes up the chimney and gets pot residue that he can't lick off and runs away all stoned. The end.

Synopsis: Fat Freddy's Cat is talking to his nephews about the Pied Piper of Hamelin. They said they've already heard it and it's about a pied piper that comes to town and plays music on a flute that causes the rats of the city to go crazy and drown themselves in the river. When the town pays him with a bad check, the kids all love his music and he leads them away to his punk nightclub on the other side of town where they all live happily ever after in a perpetual orgy of sex, drugs and rock & roll. He then tells them that's where he came in on the story, in one of his previous lives. He is now down to just a handful of black stripes but back then he was all black and known as Schwartzenkater the Magnificent. The Mayor of Hamelin called on him to go get the children back in any way possible and throw their drugs in the river. He travels to the club to hear the pied piper (who looks like Fat Freddy) and the music is awful so he jumps on stage to play the saxophone apparently well but the audience can't stand the 'old fashioned' music so he pulls out a violin case and everyone dreads hearing classical music but it's really a machine gun that he uses to off the pied piper and says aloud, 'not violins, violence' Nothing is more impressive than violence. The audience goes crazy and want to buy machine guns from him offering up thousands. He returns to town and they pay him a check for his services. He goes to the bank and finds out there are insufficient funds which he exclaims he should've knows. When he looks around, his nephews have gone and he finds them in the other room watching mindless television.

There are a series of short stories including cat facial expressions, teaching his nephews to catch mice and they relate gruesome details on what to do when they're caught that they said they learned from television, Fat Freddy trying to toilet train the cat and ending up using the litterbox since he put cellophane on the toilet, Fat Freddy's Cat trying to live in the cemetary til he's spraypainted by punk rocker graffiti artists, Fat Freddy's Cat using cat laughter to wake the fat guy to feed him, Fat Freddy's clever contraptions to get the cat to bring him breakfast, coffee and the paper that backfires as he oversleeps only to find the cat eating his food, drinking his coffee and reading his paper, Fat Freddy's Cat devising a scheme using a whip to chase off dogs who laugh and say they're not afraid of a pussy with a whip only to see lions, tigers and leopards appear on cars when he cracks the whip and the big cats thank him for the nice 'meal' and give him tickets to the circus, Fat Freddy's Cat daydreaming of being on an island while really just sitting on a traffic pole in the middle of a street, The automatic dishwasher service (Fat Freddy's Cat in a box) that Fat Freddy offers up to a neighbor and the cat ends up coming out of the box in the shape of the box. Fat Freddy offering up his cat as a stud service. Fat Freddy's Cat dropping large trash bag of water on a dog several stories down on the street that flattens the dog and Fat Freddy thinks someone put out a new rug, Fat Freddy taking his cat to vet for depression and vet mixes up the 'sound' treatment that frazzles Fat Freddy, Phineas Phreak cleaning up while Fat Freddy goes to the movies and uses the three bags of orange cat fur to fashion Fat Freddy's Cat on the fat guy's pillow so when he gets home and tries to pickup the cat it 'dissolves' and scares him, Fat Freddy's Cat gets kicked out of the house so he goes to the park to try to live like a squirrel only to be the brunt of a squirrel joke where one of the squirrels convinces him to wear big buck teeth, and finally Fat Freddy thinks it would be hilarious to scare the cat with a hairdryer only to have the cat turn the tables and take it out and turn it on while Fat Freddy is in the tub hence scaring the fat guy until finally he drops it in the tub and electrocutes Fat Freddy with the moral of 'never mess with Fat Freddy's Cat'
