Set Description:
Welcome.
I read issue #700-#706 and fell in love with the story…and decided I should try and collect at least this part of the collection. I haven’t decided on whether I will buy the variances or not…only time will tell. Right now, #701 is the only variance I have bought. The story should turn into a classic in the years to come. The art is unbelievable. And the individual issues are underpriced in my opinion.
This is a great ending to a beautiful beginning. Jane Foster can now step out from the shadow of “Thor” and become her own unique Marvel character as the last “Valkyrie.”
Come in and check out my growing collection. I plan to keep these books for a long, long time to come (and then pass them on to family when I pass on). I cherish each of these issues for their story and art. And please, accept my thanks and appreciation to you for stopping by and looking around. Your time and visit means a lot to me. Have a great and wonderful day.

My thoughts:
This is a powerful cover. Mjolnir lays shattered on the ground. Broken. And Mangog is seen walking away in the distance as if the mystical hammer was nothing more than a bothersome flea.
If this doesn’t send chills down your back, then you know nothing about the legacy and myth of Thor in the Marvel Universe. Mjolnir is unyielding. Unbreakable—until this moment. Knowing the stories, the depicturing leaves me wondering what kind of a creature is this beast that broke the unbreakable.
This is one of the reasons I came back to read Thor—the visual of this cover.

One of the five I bid on (#701-704, #706) on a whim never thinking I would win—both surprised and happy that I did. Even more baffling is to find that there are only 6 copies graded at 9.8 on the registry (I expect more in the future—but, I guess people these days prefer the “variants” over the “regular” issuance. Their lost, not mine).

Synopsis for “The Wrath of The Mangog” (Thor #701):
As Malekith explains the supposed origins of the creature known as Mangog, War Thor (Volstagg) and Mangog begin a fight to the death. The beast recognizes the smell of a God in Volstagg and that's all it needs to have a reason for killing him. Mangog is said to have been born from the hatred of a population of billions who was slaughtered by Odin because of some slight. Over the years, though, the monster has become the token of judgment for those who can't be judged: Gods who betrayed their idolizers and their prayers, Gods who called holy their most unholy actions. Mangog goes on to punch War Thor, who seems incapable of answering back.
On Vanaheim, realm of the Old Gods, a raid of Roxxon soldiers is engaging the population. As the ground troops report they are being overwhelmed by the locals, a reinforcement jumps from the helicopters overhead: it's the B.E.R.S.E.R.K.E.R. Squad, ready to "smash some Gods". In the treeline, 5000 pounds of napalm are dropped to aid another section of troops against the Gods.
War Thor starts fighting back, managing to strike a lightning inside Mangog's mouth. Unexpectedly, though, Mangog absorbs the hit in his belly and spits out the energy in Volstagg's face, proceeding to punch him to the ground again.
In Niffleheim, Land of the Dead, the just deceased Queen Karnilla wakes up on the shores of afterlife. She is greeted by Balder, her ex-lover and now Lord of Corpses. Despite being dead, Karnilla is glad to have been reunited with her loved one, but she's soon startled by the presence of the Guardians of Nastrond, the King's private force. Their aspect may be scary, as they resemble zombies, but they are worthy soldiers and they are especially needed as a Fire Goblin army suddenly attacks them, claiming the throne for their leader, Queen Sindr.
Volstagg is still being beaten up brutally by Mangog. During the pounding, Volstagg drops his hammer and helmet, effectively losing his powers as War Thor and becoming much less resistent to Mangog's hits. The monster takes in his hands the Ultimate Mjolnir and destroys it, subsequently hitting Volstagg so that he's barely able to grab the edge of Old Asgard with a hand. Mangog presses his hand in order to force him to reveal the current location where the Asgardians reside, but Volstagg refuses to talk. In his place, Malekith, who kept himself out of view until now, answers: the location is Asgardia, a big, golden city near Saturn. There, he'll find all his enemies, including the hated Odin. After a brief and unfriendly introduction between the two villains, Mangog leaves for Asgardia. Meanwhile, Malekith drops a knife on Volstagg's hand, causing him to float away in outer space and, possibly, to die….

An enjoyable story.
If you have the chance, I highly recommend reading Thor #700-#706. Its’s a powerful but sad story. It will become a Marvel classic over time.

A part of the “Five” I bought at auction on ebay. This was the last one I placed a bid on—like the others, I didn’t expect to win. I made the one bid and just left it up to chance/fate whether I got it or not.
Thankfully, both luck and fate smiled on me. I won much to my surprise.

Synopsis for "The Gospel According to Jane" (Thor #704)
Years ago, Jane's mother tells her, as she's dying of cancer, that she could never convince herself God exists, but she urges her daughter to find a god worth believing in.
Now, Jane herself is fighting the cancer that's killing her: she says she never could do what her mother had told her, but also that if she has to die, she won't do so without a fight.
On Asgardia, the Mangog is fighting Odinson and All-Father Odin, as they try to prevent the monster from destroying the home of the Gods. Even though it seems unstoppable, neither son nor father have any intention to give in.
Years ago, at a hospital, Jane is informed by a doctor that her father hasn't made it after his last heart attack. She leaves noting that he was all the family she had left.
Back to the present, Jane says bye to Sam and Doctor Strange, remaining with her friend Roz and, outside the room, Thori, whom Odinson has left as guard against the possible return of Mjolnir.
On Asgardia, Mangog is striken by Odinson's thunder, which isn't enough to scratch the monster. All-Mother Freyja watches the scene from afar, wondering if any other weapon in the armory could stop the Mangog, after she failed to do so with the Destroyer. Loki appears behind her, saying there's no way to save Asgardia this time. He offers to save her by teleporting her far away with his new powers as the Sorcerer Supreme of Midgard, but she refuses saying she's believed him one last time and he managed to betray her again when he put her in a near-death coma. He explains his actions, but her mind doesn't change, so he leaves. Freyja bursts into tears. Meanwhile, Mangog has subdued Odinson and Odin, so he smashes the controls that pilot Asgardia so that the citadel will travel into the Sun, not leaving even corpses to be resurrected.
Years ago, Jane exits the Saint Mark's Hospital in disbelief: her ex-husband and son have just died in a car crash. Thor appears to bring her his condolences, but she screams at him "Where were you?!", adding that Gods only help people when it suits them. She then realizes she too wasn't there in the moment of need, so she concludes that it's because Gods don't believe in people, and with good reason.
In the present, Jane goes say hello to her friend Bonnie, another patient of the cancer ward. Bonnie asks her if they'll pray together, to which Jane agrees with some reluctance. Meanwhile, Asgardia is travelling towards the Sun, while Mangog has in his hands Odin, Odinson and Freyja. As Jane goes back to her room, she finds Roz talking on the phone with an Alpha Flight representative. On her cue, the interlocutor tells her about what's going on with Asgardia, so Roz enjoins to call the Avengers for help. Jane calmly enters her room, analyses her medical file saying she would've beaten the cancerous cells in her body, then she grabs Mjolnir, which was waiting for her at the window.
In a moment, as Mangog boasts about feeling the Gods dying, Jane arrives on Asgardia, telling the monster to get ready to face the fury of Thor.

(These 5 issues #701-704, #706 each have become the cheapest I have bought a CGC 9.8 graded comic. The previous cheapest was “War of the Realms #1 Dauterman Dketch Cover” (#2035828020) at $39.99—a difference of $10.41).

Not bad; not really. Any CGC graded comic you come out paying less than 30 bucks is a win-win situation in my opinion. Total cost for all five of the books were $147.90. “erstockton” took pity on me and combined the shipping for next to nothing ($12.95). I will go back and buy from him again and again; a true professional.
If you have a chance to read these comics (#700-707) I would highly recommend it. It’s a great story with fantastic art.

Did not expect to win this; not really. I put in a bid and said “what-the-hell.” If I win, I win. If I don’t, I don’t. Never imagine I would win with such a low bid. It just goes to show nothing ventured, nothing gained. I took a chance and the chance paid off—not only on this issue but 4 others as well (#701—#704). I did not win #705, someone else outbid me by a single dollar (their gain, my lost; I wasn’t paying attention to the bidding at the end).
I knew I would buy this storyline. It leads into the “The Mighty Thor: At the Gates of Valhalla, War of the Realms, War of the Realms Omega,” and from there it sends our heroine—“Jane Foster”—spinning off into a new series, “Jane Foster: Valkyrie.”
Marvel outdid themselves with this. The art was fantastic. The story totally incredible and sad…it will be a classic for years to come. Over time, I think the prices for this issue and the others will raise dramatically once “Jane Foster: Valkyrie” has established itself. People will come back looking for Mighty Thor #700—706 as the foundation for the beginning of our Heroine’s new role as the last “Valkyrie.”

Synopsis for Mighty Thor #706:
At the Gates of Valhalla! The battle against the Mangog is finished. And the loses have been profound. So what—if anything—remains of the story of Jane Foster, Goddess of Thunder? And where do the other Gods possibly go from here?
___________________________________________________
Footnote:
Do not dismiss this issue. This is the issue that brought Jane Foster back from death. This is her resurrection. The beginning in which she ascends into becoming the last Valkyrie in “War of the Realms Omega.”
