Synopsis for "The Devourer King - Part One: The Black Winter"
Racing across all of the Ten Realms, Mjolnir carries a message from the new All-Father of Asgard that there is to be peace following the War of the Realms and that he will personally smite anyone who breaks this decree. In Manhattan, the Avengers battle a giant monster whose head is obliterated by Mjolnir, which imbeds itself in the ground at Captain America's feet. Landing next to the divine hammer and retracting his helmet, Iron Man mischievously smirks and asks if anyone has a sharpie.
Standing on the Bifrost, Thor holds out his hand to recall Mjolnir, Hugin and Munin perched on his shoulders. Thor smugly asks Sif - now the all-seeing wielder of Hofund - if she saw that, Sif replying that she sees everything; and as Thor asks if she can point him in the direction of any trouble that needs resolving she gently reprimands him to attend to his duties as the King of Asgard. Catching Mjolnir and seeing a message from Iron Man teasingly telling him to enjoy his retirement, Thor begrudgingly agrees. Sif asks why he is so dour, pointing out that inheriting the throne is something he's wanted since he was a child, but Thor lamentingly replies that now that he has what he thought he'd wanted he misses what he'd had, asking what a king is compared to a god.
Arriving at Asgard's throne room, which has been remade to suit his image, Thor dons a tunic, ram-horned helmet, and regal robe, sitting on a throne carved from Yggdrasill itself. Dropping Mjolnir with a heavy thud, Thor commands his courtiers to leave, Volstagg approaching the throne and asking to go over some of the details regarding his upcoming speech - namely how much ale will be required. Tired and irritable, Thor simply glares at him; Volstagg ushering everyone out of the room and quietly telling the party planner to err on the side of too much ale. As Thor lets out a lamenting sigh, Loki appears from the shadows and mockingly asks how it feels to sit on their father's throne. Thor snaps that he wouldn't know since he's only ever sat on his own, Loki trying to get under his foster brother's skin by asking if he's ready for his upcoming speech.
Thor angrily commands Loki to bow before him, the new King of the Frost Giants begrudgingly doing so. Lifting Mjolnir with some difficulty, Thor tells Loki to get out and never return unless invited, threatening to feed him to Hugin and Munin. Noticing Thor's grunt of effort, Loki's furious glare turns to a look of concern and he asks Thor if Mjolnir is getting heavier. As Loki continues to probe, Thor furiously hurls the divine hammer at Loki's head and stops it in midair just before it hits him. Cowering, Loki asks how Thor did that, and Thor snaps that he is the All-Father and has the power that comes with the title; taking Mjolnir as he tells Loki he would do well to remember that.
Stepping out onto a balcony overlooking the Golden City of Asgard, Thor tries to ignore Mjolnir growing heavier in his grasp and prepares to deliver a speech to his subjects, one he's rehearsed countless times to his own reflection and Mjolnir. Before he can do so, the temperature suddenly drops and snow begins falling. Galactus - badly wounded and covered in black frost - plummets from the sky and crash-lands in the middle of Asgard. Enraged by this apparent attack on his kingdom - and secretly delighted to have the excuse to cast aside the mantle of king - Thor lunges at the Devourer of Worlds and blasts him with a massive bolt of divine lightning. As Thor prepares to finish him off, Galactus protests that he came for help, stating that the Black Winter is coming before falling unconscious.
A few months later, Asgard has been rebuilt from the devastation wrought by Galactus' fall, a storm of mourning sweeping across the realm. Volstaag is the first to notice that Yggdrasil has been infected by the dark ice that had afflicted Galactus, causing it to begin to wither and rot. Convening a council of the Heralds of Galactus, Thor demands to know what the "Black Winter" their master mentioned is. Phasing through a wall, the Silver Surfer - now intangible and stained black by his battle with an ancient god of darkness - replies that it is the end of everything. Shocked by the Surfer's altered appearance, Thor asks what happened to him, but the Surfer replies that time is of the essence. Turning to the other Heralds, he asks how much they know about Galactus' origins.
The Rider replies that Galactus was the last survivor of the Sixth Cosmos, which was destroyed by an unknown cataclysm, but the Surfer interrupts and states that the Black Winter is what destroyed Galactus' home universe. Thor asks how they can stop it, but the Surfer tells him that they cannot, and that the Black Winter does to whole universes what Galactus does to planets. The Surfer states that Galactus is the only one who can stop the Black Winter - having survived it twice - but that first he needs to consume the energy of five special planets, the location of which he learned a long time ago but kept hidden from his master. As Nova laments the prospect of Galactus being more powerful than ever, Stardust asks which of the Heralds will accompany him. The Surfer says he will be the one to go, Thor standing as he says that he will join him.
Later, Thor dresses for battle, angrily recalling Sif and Loki telling him that his fighting days are over. Wiping Iron Man's mocking message from Mjolnir, Thor grimly states that Odin is no longer the king of Asgard, and that this is how the new king does things. Flanked by the Heralds of Galactus and accompanied by an army of Asgardians, Thor marches to where Galactus has been convalescing from his injuries. As Galactus stands, Thor commands him to kneel; the Surfer saying that he can feel his former master inside his mind, asking if he knows of their plan. Genuflecting before Thor, Galactus replies that he does and begrudgingly commends the Surfer for keeping the location of the five planets hidden for so long. The Surfer informs Galactus that Thor and his army will be accompanying them to evacuate the populaces of the five planets before he feeds, asking if Galactus is ready to begin.
Standing, Galactus says that he is not, telling the assembled crowd that just as he appears differently to every being that perceives him, so too does the Black Winter - which manifests as the thing that will bring about the fated deaths of those that look upon it. The first time he witnessed it, he saw nothing but an eldritch void unfathomable to the mortal mind; but that the second time he faced it as a cosmic entity, he saw the embodiment of his true death. Raising his hand, Galactus declares that the one prophesied by the Black Winter to destroy him is none other than Thor Odinson, blasting the King of Asgard with a torrent of the Power Cosmic. As the Surfer and Volstagg scream in horror, thinking Galactus is trying to kill the King of Asgard, Galactus states that he didn't just happen upon Asgard after being maimed by the Black Winter, but came there deliberately intending to defy his destiny. Stating that if Thor is fated to be his death he intends to keep his enemies close, Galactus commands his newest Herald to rise. Imbued with and transformed by the Power Cosmic - burning off his beard, causing his hair to turn platinum blond and grow in length, and restoring his missing arm and eye - Thor rises as the Herald of Thunder.

Synopsis for "The Devourer King - Part Five: Reign"
In Asgard, Lady Sif watches with her All-Sight as Volstagg attempts to pacify the refugees from the planets Galactus devoured; the badly-beaten and depowered Beta Ray Bill prays beneath the dying Yggdrasill, and King Loki broods on his throne in Jotunheim. Unable to stand the overwhelming commotion she withdraws into herself, only to be roused by Bill approaching her. As Bill apologizes for intruding, Sif states that she tried to see Thor, but cannot sense him even with Hofund's power. As Sif laments having thought that becoming the All-Father would make him less reckless, Bill remarks that they shouldn't have expected it to. As Sif incredulously asks why Bill is defending Thor after their brutal fight, Bill states that anyone who wants to become a king should be disqualified, but that Thor didn't ask to be set on this path. Nevertheless, Bill states that he hopes Thor will rise to the challenge. Watching Thori play with Lockjaw, Sif asks Bill what he was praying for; and Bill responds that he was praying for forgiveness, though he's not sure for whom. Bill informs Sif that Volstagg has called a gathering to discuss the goings-on - and as an excuse to get drunk - but Sif declines to leave her post.
Across the universe, Thor and Galactus are engulfed by the Black Winter, lashing out with divine lightning and the Power Cosmic against tendrils of eldritch darkness. The Black Winter greets Thor and tells Galactus to shut up as the Devourer of Worlds begs for Thor not to listen to it. Remarking that it finds Thor interesting, the Black Winter mockingly addresses him by the titles of his distant future self. Confused, Thor protests that he's never gone by "The All-Butcher" or "End-God" before, but the Black Winter silences him with a blast of energy and asks if he wants to see how he'll die. Galactus futilely struggles to free himself as the Black Winter engulfs him, pleading for it to stay out of his head. Thor attempts to hold it back, but is engulfed by the universe-devouring darkness as well.
Thor finds himself in an Escherian maze of staircases, the Black Winter stating that it asked him a question. Thor furiously demanding for the Black Winter to show itself, the Black Winter stating that the arena Thor is in is an extension of itself, but that he cannot defeat it. Offering Thor the gift of the truth of how he will die. Thor shouts that he's not afraid of the end, the Black Winter sneering that the end isn't afraid of him either. Attacked from behind, Thor looks up in horror to see Gorr the God-Butcher seemingly alive and once-more bonded to the All-Black symbiote. As Gorr brandishes his Necrosword and gloats, Thor incredulously protests that he'd killed Gorr years ago, then angrily snarls that he'll gladly do so again. Before Thor can attack, he's impaled from behind by a spear and turns to see the original Loki, who gleefully mocks him. Snapping the spear, Thor bashes Gorr with Mjolnir and shouts at the Black Winter that he has had enough. The Black Winter sneers that Thor hasn't nearly had enough as Mangog, Jormungand, Malekith, the Enchantress, Mephisto, Surtur, Apocalypse, the Juggernaut, Annihilus, and Doctor Doom appear. As Thor struggles against the horde of top-tier supervillains, the Black Winter muses that Thor has had many scrapes with death over the centuries of his life - naming the Beyonder and the Serpent as some examples before listing the various ways in which Thor has been killed. Finally, it brings up what was supposed to be his true end: fighting one-armed and one-eyed alongside his brother against the resurrected Gorr at the end of time, before sacrificing himself to hold off entropy. As Surtur and Magog punch Thor into Jormungand's gaping maw, the Black Winter sneers that something has altered history's course - slithering through time to kill Thor's destiny and break his fate. As Thor breaks free from the Midgard Serpent's jaws, the Black Winter asks if he wants it to show him how it all truly ends. Thor realizes that what it's speaking of is the reason why Mjolnir has grown heavier since he assumed the throne and that something is indeed very wrong. Refusing to give in, Thor blasts the Black Winter with the full might of the Power of the All-Father and the God Tempest, generating a massive God-Blast that briefly dispels it.
Freed, Thor and Galactus agree to set aside their differences to fight off the Black Winter. As Hugin and Munin perch on his shoulders, Thor commands the Black Winter to stop hiding and show him his true end. The Black Winter condenses into a blackened doppelganger of Thor himself, though it states that its form isn't Thor's end. Thor asks Galactus if this was what he saw when he encountered the Black Winter earlier, and Galactus says it was. The Black Winter mockingly states that Galactus isn't telling Thor everything - telling Galan to reveal what he saw when they first met, during the destruction of the Sixth Cosmos, and why he alone survived. Thor snaps that he's had enough of the Black Winter's talk and that he won't let it destroy his universe. Smirking, the Black Winter remarks that Galactus lied again and that it has no intention of consuming his universe, ominously stating that darker fates than it are coming. As Galactus beseeches Thor not to listen to it, but Thor ignores him and tells the Black Winter to reveal what it wants. The Black Winter responds that it's come to reclaim what's rightfully its - Galan of Taa, aka Galactus, Herald of the Black Winter.

Synopsis for "The Devourer King - Part Six: Herald of None"
Arriving at the Hlidskjalf, the Silver Surfer is greeted by Thor - who is attempting to drink himself into a stupor. Descending from his surfboard, the Surfer apologizes for interrupting - saying he came as soon as he'd heard. As the Surfer asks how he's doing, Thor offhandedly remarks that he's tired and drunk - chugging a drinking horn full of mead before asking what it is that the Surfer's heard. Kneeling, the Surfer remarks that the galaxy shook with the reverberations of Thor's battle against the Black Winter, adding that he couldn't help but notice the new additions to the Bifrost's architecture. Tossing an empty pitcher aside Thor states that he thought it fitting. Standing, the Surfer states that Sif told him Thor had been holed up for months and hadn't spoken of what transpired during his battle. The Surfer offers a sympathetic ear, but Thor brusquely rebukes him; saying that no-one has seen what he saw and that knowledge is his burden alone. As the Surfer remarks that the burden of knowledge is heavy, Thor agrees and lamentingly glances to where Mjolnir sits beside his throne. The Surfer again appeals to Thor to share what happened, remarking from personal experience that hiding away and bottling his anguish up will help no-one in the long run.
Months prior, Galactus roars that the Black Winter is lying and blasts the Abstract Entity with the Power Cosmic. Unfazed, the Black Winter - in the form of Thor - remarks that it never lies - it made a deal with Galactus: it would spare his life in exchange for him serving it. Repudiating Galactus for having lied and hidden himself away in a dying universe, the Black Winter snaps that it has come to collect the debt Galan owes it for his powers. Lashing out with a wave of darkness, the Black Winter sends Galactus plummetting to the surface of Kryo's moon. Standing, Galactus beseeches Thor to strike while the Black Winter has consolidated itself into the Asgardian king's likeness, but Thor blasts Galactus with a massive bolt of divine lightning and coldly tells him to stay down. Enraged by Thor's insolence, Galactus furiously reminds his Herald that they are all that stands between the Black Winter and the universe. Not falling for Galactus' lies, Thor snaps that he is all that stands between the Black Winter and Galactus, and that he is not yet done with the Devourer of Worlds. Furious, Galactus blasts Thor with his augmented Power Cosmic, boasting that he is more powerful than ever. Thor withstands the blast and snaps that Galactus' power is that which he tricked Thor into allowing him to steal. Angered at having been used as a pawn, Thor dismisses Galactus as the errand boy of a hailstorm and blasts him with a torrent of divine lightning.
Stripped of the power he obtained by consuming the five worlds, Galactus incredulously wonders that happened and Thor remarks that he took it like he took the Power Cosmic from him earlier. As Galactus protests that he needs the power to fight the Black Winter, Thor coldly states that he will deal with the Black Winter himself and that he has no further use for Galactus. As Galactus raises his hand to blast him, Thor snaps that if the Black Winter wants Galactus it can have him. Blasting Galactus with a massive torrent of lightning, Thor sentences him to death for all the planets he has devoured or tried to destroy; draining the Devourer of Worlds of the Power Cosmic and leaving him a desiccated husk before crushing Galactus' chest with Mjolnir. As the dying Galactus protests that Thor has no idea what he's done, the Black Winter tells Thor to stand aside and let it claim Galactus; stating it will then leave his universe to its fate. Turning to face the Black Winter, Thor refuses to let it take Galactus. Growing to a massive height, the Black Winter angrily states that it has no quarrel with him, but that it will take what is rightfully its. When Thor again refuses, saying he still has a use for Galactus, the Black Winter incredulously asks whether he intends to make Galactus a trophy or a slave, mockingly asking what possible use Thor could have for Galactus. Raising Mjolnir, Thor says that he will use Galactus as a bomb, using Galactus' dying body as the payload for a massive explosion of divine lightning infused with the full might of the Power Cosmic.
Thor rises from the smoking remnants of Galactus' now-empty armor, noticing a single snowflake of the Black Winter survived. As he catches it, the Black Winter sneers that Thor has won nothing and offers to use the last of its power to show him how he's going to die. Saying that he does, Thor crushes the last of the Black Winter to dust in his palm - seeing a vision of his new fated demise.
In the present, Thor is revealed to have used Galactus' helmet as an entryway to his throne room. Digesting what Thor has told him, the Surfer expresses remorse for his former master, though Thor has no pity for Galactus. The Surfer cautiously asks what the Black Winter showed Thor, but Thor - sporting a traumatized expression - refuses to divulge what he witnessed, saying it was nothing darkness. In truth, however, Thor had seen a possible future where Earth's heroes had been turned into zombies, and Thanos had stolen Mjolnir and imbued it with the Infinity Stones.
