Set Description:

1974 X-men, Magneto. A more powerful team of heroes has never existed. I'm talking about the original Defenders- The Silver Surfer, Doctor Strange, The Hulk and The Sub-Mariner. They've got all the bases covered...space, magic, land and sea. Now if only they could all get along! The best storyline of the series by far is the 6-part crossover with the Avengers. I wonder who wins that battle, the Defenders or the Avengers? Hmmm...

Excerpt from writer Steve Englehart on the Avengers vs. Defenders War...

Having been a Marvel reader before I was a Marvel writer, I had always enjoyed the Double-Sized Annuals that appeared every summer - but here, my first year at Marvel, they decided not to do Annuals. So I figured I'd do something "Annual-like" on my own, and conceived of meshing the storylines of my two team books. When I proposed the idea to editor Roy Thomas, he had just one concern: if I screwed this up I'd throw both books off-schedule. I assured him I wouldn't, and that was that. (It would never happen that easily now!)
Roy later called this the first "bi-weekly comic."
