I waited years to find the right copy of this book. I finished 2-258 In the late 2000's. I wanted a copy that had good paper quality, nice registration and good staple placement and graded 6.0 or better. Literally years passed before I saw copies I liked. This one was slightly higher than I expected to get and it's a beauty! Well worth the wait!
One of the iconic covers from DC, I think most collectors would recognize a Superboy #1.

While not my favorite cover of the early issues, this has to date been my most expensive issue to acquire. I actually had a lower grade copy that I later found out had a amateur tear seal done. That drove me nuts and I sought out a nicer CGC copy to replace it. The good news is that a fellow board member happily bought the old number two where it became his earliest issue of Superboy to own. Hey, we Superboy collectors have to take care of each other!

Starting with issue 3 and going till about 14, with the exception of number 9, these issues get tougher to find, especially in fine or better. I feel real lucky to have gotten this 4, as I just kind of stumbled on it by asking someone from an eBay ad "what other issues do you have?" "I have a 4 in fine" was the response. Ah, a eBayer that can grade raw books...nice!
As far as the cover goes, the winner of the contest gets drawn into Superboy #7, kinda cool!

When I saw this beauty I knew it had to be mine MWAHAHAHA! Okay, evil scientist laugh aside, this is the nicest copy of this issue I have ever seen and anyone who knows anything about early Superboy issues knows that in any grade this is one of the more difficult issues to obtain.
This copy is from the Williamsport collection.

If I had to pick a favorite cover of all of the golden age Superboy's this would be the one. Two girls in 1949 style bobby sox and jeans staring at posters of their hero....Superboy! The red cover is fantastic and we don't see another red cover till issue 35! Gerber has this book at a six and I would have to agree. Where Gerber is wrong though is that 3-8,10-14 are probably all sixes!

The first cover appearance of Humpty Dumpty...Superboy's first recurring villian! His first appearance is in number six, makes the cover of 7 and 9,appears in 8 and 11 and then he's gone for good!
This issue is just a stunning 8.0 with beautiful pages and a clean, bright well centered cover.

I think I underappreciated this cover for quite awhile, but over time have grown to like the colors and the ships on the cover. I think what bugged me about it was that I thought the villian, Humpty Dumpty was kinda dumb. I still do but he does have the distinction of being the first recurring villian of Superboys.
I bought this nice copy from Terry's Comics at the 2008 San Diego Comic Con.

Outside of Superboy 1, this has always been my grail Superboy. I really wanted a nice copy and this one fit what I was looking for perfectly. The first appearance of Lana Lang makes this second only to Superboy 1 as a key. This issue is also pretty difficult to come by, regardless of grade you just don't find it very often.
This is the Williamsport copy and I won it off of Heritage in June 2008.

Oh boy, The first Lana Lang cover! This is quite the ...mature looking Lana! She wouldn't grace the covers again until issue 21, and from then she is seen often.
The 5th and final appearance of that rascal, Humpty Dumpty.
Dang this was a tough one to get! I picked this beauty up at the 2009 San Diego Comic Con.

One of those cool covers that dissapeared at the end of the golden age.
Such a nice looking 6.5! Gerber says that this book has a scarcity index of six as does only one other issue of Superboy, the number six. According to Gerber, those are the scarcest issues, but my "completist" observation is that there are several issues equally as hard or maybe harder to find.
What are they? Well, I think anyone looking for a 5, 8, 11, 21, 23, 25 and 26 would say those are at least as tough or tougher than a 12. To use a term from the car industry "your mileage may vary".

What a long, strange trip it's been...
So, around 2005 or 2006 Metropolis Comics had consigned to them a nice Superboy 13 and 14 in CGC 7.0 both OW pages. I thought they were priced too high so I passed.
A little later, Heritage Comics listed a raw Superboy 13 described as a fine that I won in their weekly auction. I just didn't really like it, and returned it.
Eventually, Steve Borack listed a Superboy 13 in CGC 5.5 with OW/W pages on the boards for more than the Heritage copy I returned.
I bought it, cracked it out and found that it was the SAME book I returned to Heritage!! OY!
So...this 7.0 copy currently in my registry set..I got it from Comiclink in one of their signature auctions...for MORE than what Metro had their 7.0 for....yes, they are the same copy.
Around a couple of years ago, Steve Ritter lists a Superboy 14 on the CGC boards in 7.0 OW for just a little less than the Metro copy...yes they are the same one. Hey, moral vicory here, I save $25!
So...I now have both the 13 and 14 That I passed on from Metro...saving about $18 overall on both! OY!
Moral of the story...if you really want it, and the books can be tough to come by, don't pass them up! I said in another comment that patience is a virtue, it can also turn around and bite you.
Now, onto the book itself... A nice appearing copy of another tough 52 pager. This issue is a tough one to get. Yes, I have seen a couple, there is a 8.5 out there that is really nice, but has a noticeable chip out of the front cover that would drive me crazy everytime I see it. This 7.0 fit in nicely with my set. Your home for good Superboy 13!
This is another of those covers that showed Superboy doing super stuff in everyday settings. These type of covers would end with number 18.

This cover is somewhat of a departure from earlier issues that have those everyday life scenes. Here we have a cover depicting a scene from a story in the book which actually makes it look pretty interesting. Now, I don't know, but if I was a betting man I would put my money on a boy from Krypton over a boy from Mars anyday!
A really nice looking copy that I got from Steve Ritter in the summer of 2008.
These 52 pagers are special as to me they represent the "last of the golden age" books. With this issue there are only two more to go.

So around 1990 I was at the San Diego Comic Con and I ran into a fellow DC collector outside of the convention center.We were talking and I asked him what he collected and he told me Superboy and that he was looking for a 15 because that was the last issue he needed. I was pretty impressed because at the time I was just collecting the silver age on up issues.
Well, fast forward about 15 years and I find this nice copy of Superboy 15 at Graham Cracker's Comics at the San Diego comic con.
I wonder if that guy ever found his copy?

See, this is an example of one issue being easier to find than others from the same time frame in the same condition. Superboy 16 seems not to be too difficult....but try 11,12,13 or 14.
I got this nice one from a Heritage Signature Auction, a place I have found several of my nice golden age Superboy's.
