Signature Series book. Beautiful cover of Dazzler being "managed" by Storm
Dazzler is influenced by the Maurauder Malice. During a concert she exposes her cover of being a mere keyborder and steals the limelight from Lila Cheney. Later on she dances in a nightclub and makes no secret of her light powers. Lila is concerned and calls the X-Men. Wolverine, Storm, Rogue and Psylocke investigate, and Malice does some body-jumping, making the X-Men fight each other. Finally Betsy understands what’s going on and they make Malice enter Storm, who has the will power to resist the Marauder’s influence. The psychic entity then leaves, though feeling victorious as she made the X-Men say things to each other that will not be easy to forget. Dazzler is told to join the X-Men, as she is a too obvious target for the Marauders.

Brief Description:
In her hospital bed, Madelyne Pryor has a nightmare about being the sole survivor of a plane crash. She is brought to an ambulance, but the paramedics seem familiar and Madelyne realizes she is in trouble. She breaks free, but is eventually gunned down by two of the Marauders. Madelyne finally wakes up from her coma, much to the surprise of two doctor, who have been treating the unconscious woman for weeks. At Xavier’s, the X-Men load up the wounded onto the Blackbird. They’re going to take them to Moira MacTaggert’s in Scotland. Only Storm and Wolverine are staying behind. During the flight Shadowcat, still stuck in phased state, walks up to the sleeping Longshot and gives him a kiss. He wakes up and feels death within Kitty. Meanwhile, Storm and Wolverine take a trip to Sara Grey’s house. They arrive and find the place on fire. Wolverine picks up a familiar scent and goes berserk. He knocks Storm out and runs away. Storm wakes up in a prison cell. She escapes and finds out she’s in a building filled with animal heads and war memorabilia. The owners of the building come back, they are three super-powered war veterans by the names of Crimson Commando, Super Sabre and Stonewall. After a big fight, Storm is subdued. Later, she finds out she and another girl are going to be hunted by these three men. They get a head start and take advantage of it. At sunset the men go hunting.
Full Summary:
(mix of nightmare and flashbacks)
A plane is coming into the San Francisco International Airport. Its left wing is on fire. It turns out that two engines are blown and the hydraulics are gone. The plane hits the runway and the left wing flies right off. The cabin catches on fire, sending people screaming. The plane continues skidding down the runway. It suddenly explodes into a huge fireball. Only one person emerges from the flames… Madelyne Pryor. Behind her the flames form the shape of the Phoenix.
(present)
Outside near the Blackbird’s takeoff, Wolverine is crouching, smoking a cigarette. Storms walks over to talk to him. She wants to know why he’s been so quiet since they returned from Dallas. Wolverine tells her he’s upset with himself after almost killing her. She assures him it wasn’t his fault. Malice really messed with their minds that day. She goes on to tell him she has a job she needs to do and wants him there for backup. He stands up, flicks away his cigarette and tells her he’s ready.
Upstate New York, Storm and Wolverine are in a car driving on a back road. Storm talks about their previous encounter with Malice and how it’s messed up the team. The X-Men feel as though they can no longer trust each other. Wolverine agrees with her. He’s upset about the whole thing because his senses were out of whack. He almost killed Storm because he couldn’t tell if she was friend or foe. He wonders how he can trust anyone without his senses working. Storm interrupts him; they’ve arrived.
Storm stops the car and they both get out. In front of them stands the fiery remains of Sara Grey’s house, Jean’s sister. They run over to the house and start searching for clues. Storm wonders if it was an attack by the Marauders or something else. Wolverine can smell dynamite and knows it was no accident. The bright side is, he doesn’t smell any dead bodies either. Storm’s mind fills with deep regret. The X-Men now pose a threat to their friends and families. Their enemies are sinking to new lows, not going after the X-Men, but the ones close to them. She realizes they should start warning everyone they know. Immediately she thinks of Forge. She wonders if she should swallow her pride and go back to him. He promised he would work on a device that would restore her powers.
Wolverine picks up the scent of two people. The first one is Cyclops and the second one he recognizes as Jean Grey. A look of shock crosses his face. He bolts upright. He had loved Jean when she was alive and the scent has brought back strong feelings. Storm grabs his shoulder in an attempt to find out what’s bothering him. Wolverine instinctively swings backwards with his fist, knocking Storm unconscious. In his current state he doesn’t realize what he’s done. He doesn’t even notice her lying on the ground as he runs off into the fog.
Over Muir Island, the Blackbird makes its descent. Most of the passengers on board are sleeping. A transparent Kitty Pryde walks through the cabin doors up to the front where the X-Men are seated. She looks at the sleeping Longshot lovingly. She hates the fact that she’s probably going to die. She wishes someone could help her. Rogue spots her and tells her to get back to her lifecell. Kitty, realizing this may be her last opportunity, plants a kiss on Longshot. He awakens much to Kitty’s surprise. He calls out to her, but she runs away, back to her lifecell. Longshot confesses to Rogue that when Kitty kissed him, he could “read” who she was. He could sense that death was near.
Elsewhere, Storm wakes up, but not where she last remembered being. Instead, she’s chained up in a prison-like cell. She reaches for a lockpick hidden in her shirt. She frees herself and opens the cell door. She doesn’t see anyone so she heads out into the hallway. She wonders if Wolverine is down there too. She has no idea what could have sent him off into a berserker rage. She peers into a nearby cell and sees a young woman chained up inside, sleeping. She continues her search hoping to find more out about the place and how she got there. She finds a set of stairs and follows them upwards. She opens another door and enters what looks like a hunting lodge. There are lots of animal heads and war memorabilia hanging up on the walls.
She looks out the window and sees three figures in the distance walking towards the lodge. She catapults herself onto the second floor and waits for them to enter. A minute later, two of them walk in muttering about how easy their hunt was. It seems they were hunting a man. She wonders where the third is. Her answer comes when he grabs her by the shirt and picks her up in the air.
He gets all cocky with her and tells her she’s going to be punished. Storm replies with a swift kick to the face. Then she grabs his head and flips him over the railing and onto the first floor. Storm makes a run for it, but is stopped after only a few feet by Super Sabre. She cuts back the other way, but once again he’s there to stop her. She realizes he must have super-speed. Finally, he introduces himself. He gives her the Mach-One Punch as he calls it and Storm goes flying backwards. She falls into the man called Stonewall. He tells her he can’t be knocked down. He reaches his arm out to help her up and receives a two-fingered eye poke for his troubles. She back flips out of his reach and grabs the rug he’s standing on. She yanks with all her might, sending him falling to the floor and toppling the Crimson Commando as well. Ororo runs towards the door, but to no avail. Super Sabre gets there first and blocks her off. She takes a swing at him, but he easily dodges it and moves behind her putting her in a half nelson. He snaps his fingers near her ear, generating a microsonic boom that knocks her out.
Storm becomes angry. She wants to know where they get off treating them like sport. The Crimson Commando introduces himself and his men as heroes from World War II. They’re retired now and they’re sick of all the problems in the world… drugs, disease, sex, etc. They’re ashamed of the world they fought to protect. This is their way of making a stand. They go on to tell Storm the other girl’s history. Her name is Priscilla and she was a drug dealer along with her boyfriend Tommie. They were both from rich and powerful families and were able to avoid punishment due to their families’ connections. So they snatched the two of them and brought back. They tell Storm the reason they grabbed her. They found her unconscious at the house that caught on fire. She had possessions on her from inside.
Ororo explains that it was her friend’s house and the possessions were evidence. She tells them she’s no criminal. However, she also knows that even if they believe her they won’t let her go, as she already knows too much. So Storm takes Priscilla by the hand and runs off into the woods. Around sunset, Storm and Priscilla stop atop a hill. Storm stops to look around for any nearby roads. There aren’t any in sight so she heads over to where Priscilla is sitting. Priscilla’s feet hurt and she wants to know if they can take a quick rest. Storm tells her it would be ok, but they must get going soon. She wonders to herself if she can really trust this girl. She puts her arm around her and they continue moving. Storm realizes at this point that Wolverine probably isn’t coming for her. She also knows even though Priscilla is a bad person, she will watch out for her for the fates demand it.
From far off, the trio of war heroes gives chase to Storm and Priscilla.

Brief Description:
Muir Island, where the X-Men are running a training exercise. It's a night-op and it's Psylocke versus the rest of the team. Rogue and Dazzler hit her hard, but Psylocke manages to best them. It's not until Longshot's crazy luck enters the equation that Psylocke is beaten. Afterwards they meet for breakfast with Banshee, who goes over their training with them. His main gripe is lack of teamwork. Later on, the X-Men are in the gym working out. Callisto and Dazzler end up going head to head, resulting in Dazzler storming off and heading to the mainland. Once there she goes to a pub and has the time of her life. She even wonders if she should stay an X-Men. After the party's over, she leaves and is almost run down by Cain Marko. Intent on proving herself, she goes after him. It turns out that Juggernaut's a big fan of her work and doesn't want to fight her. It's too bad that Dazzler doesn't feel that way. After none of her tricks work, she waits for Juggs to get close. When he's near, she throws everything she has at him. It doesn't work and the stress kills her, or so Juggernaut thinks.
Characters Involved:
Dazzler, Longshot, Psylocke, Rogue (all X-Men)
Banshee (former X-Man)
Moira MacTaggert
Callisto
Toby, patron of Black Ned's pub
Conal and other customers of the pub
Unnamed Captain, Geordie and Wullis, crew-members aboard the ship, Mary Rose
Juggernaut
Story Notes:
Psylocke was given bionic eyes by Mojo in New Mutants Annual #2.
When Rogue was still a member of the Brotherhood of evil Mutants, she and Dazzler had a longstanding feud running in Dazzler's own title [Dazzler # 22-24; 28].
The Mary Rose /Dr. Doom subplot is in reference to events coming up in the "Fantastic Four vs. The X-Men" limited series.
Longshot makes a humorous comment about breakfast, "Dead, burned animal flesh and unborn baby birds? Yum!"
Rogue replies, "Don't be gross, Longshot, those are just ham 'n' eggs."
Rogue?s first hissy fit happened in Uncanny X-Men #216.

Brief Description:
Dazzler, it turns out, wasn't dead, but just unconscious. After summoning enough strength to create a lightblast, she's rescued by her fellow X-Men. The team has a heart-to-heart and Dazz decides to stay with them. They hear a radio report that the Juggernaut is terrorizing Edinburgh and head over to check it out. Rogue's the first to reach Juggs and take him on. She's soon beaten and one by one the X-Men attack him and are nearly killed. After the group rescues Longshot beneath a pile of rubble, they decide they need to fight him as a team. Thanks to their newly developed teamwork, they're able to remove Juggy's helmet and crash-land him into some train tracks. Unfortunately a train is coming. Rogue and Longshot take to the train while Dazzler and Psylocke stick to Juggy. Both sides are successful and two tragedies are averted. However, upon getting back to the city they find it was just a clever ruse. Black Tom Cassidy was robbing the Scotland National Bank during Juggernaut's rampage. Psylocke puts a positive spin on things, though, and they see the brighter picture. In Northern Mexico, Polaris and Havok are driving home, enjoying themselves when a VW bus changes their future. They're knocked off a road and fall down a mountainside. After getting themselves back together, they search for the maniac. However, what they end up finding could spell disaster for the entire world; a Starshark - one of the living spaceships of the Brood
Characters Involved:
Dazzler, Longshot, Psylocke, Rogue (all X-Men)
Havok, Polaris (both former X-Men)
Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart
Sgt. Major Benton
Geordie and Rupert, railroad workers
Juggernaut
Story Notes:
Juggernaut and Dazzler fought one on one in Uncanny X-Men #217. As a result Dazzler was defeated and almost killed.
The "friend" who called the X-Men was probably Conal, Dazzler's dance partner from last issue.
Juggernaut's nickname for Longshot is "jackrabbit".
Rogue kissed Juggernaut once before in Marvel Team-up #150.
The Brood were last seen in UXM #167.
The mystery of the Star-shark and it's missing inhabitant is continued in UXM #232.
Bridgadier Lethbridge-Stewart and Sergeant Major Benton seem to be an homage to the British TV series "Doctor Who." In the series a Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart was the commander of the British branch of UNIT (the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce), who often associated with the Doctor, while Sergeant Benton was one of the UNIT rank-and-file. Excalibur supporting character Alistair Stuart seems to be based on the same series, as the outfit he works for is called W.H.O. (Weird Happenings Organisation). The rank of his twin sister Alysande was Brigadier.

While the Reavers make various repairs on themselves, Freedom Force arrive, and Blob and Avalanche are the first to make moves on the Reavers. Stonewall however rescues Destiny, and Pyro uses his abilities to take control of the fire, and he is about to use it against the Reavers. Avalanche is confronted by Lady Deathstrike, who slashes open his stomach, while the Reavers force the Blob into the water, where he sinks. Under Mystique’s orders, Forge takes Destiny up to the Research Center where he is to keep her safe, but Destiny, as cryptic as ever about Forge and Mystique, tells Forge that he must go into battle. Forge leaves her, when Legion arrives. Deathstrike begins attacking the Reavers, only to be captured by Pierce, who uncovers Mystique, who had used her powers to morph into Deathstrike. Mystique is suddenly terrified by an image of Destiny’s body, which a telepath flashes into her mind. Stonewall frees Mystique from Pierce, while Pyro attempts to take the Reavers down with another burst of flame, only someone snuffs his flame out - unbeknownst to Pyro, it was Legion. Stonewall is then electrocuted to death by Pierce. Mystique and Pyro are forced to make a run for it while Skullbuster fires at them - until Skullbuster is blasted to scrap metal by Forge. The Reavers teleport out before Forge can shoot Pierce. Story Notes:
Amanda Sefton and Brigadier Alysande Stuart are notably absent from this issue after their capture in Uncanny X-Men #254.
Sunder was slain in Uncanny X-Men #254.
Banshee seemingly lost his powers from overuse when battling Moses Magnum in Uncanny X-Men #119. They were temporarily restored in Marvel Comics Presents (1st series) #17-24 after he was infected with the Retribution Virus, and they were fully restored in Uncanny X-Men #254.
The de-aged Storm was found by Reisz in Uncanny X-Men #253.
Nothing is known of the mission that Mystique refers to Spiral, Super Sabre and Crimson Commando are on.
Emile Vachon was slain by the Daughters of the Dragon in Deadly Hands of Kung Fu #32-33.
Rogue and the other X-Men are believed dead as of Uncanny X-Men #227.
Forge believes Storm is alive after seeing her in a vision in Uncanny X-Men #253.
Destiny’s comment about the future being cast from cut crystal is a reference to her dream in which she foresaw her own death. [Uncanny X-Men #254]
Destiny’s words regarding Forge and Mystique ring true, as their lives become entwined in Uncanny X-Men #290, and then later when Mystique joins X-Factor, in X-Factor (1st series) #112. Forge eventually falls in love with Mystique [X-Factor (1st series) #132-134], but she leaves the team soon after.
Avalanche’s wounds are healed behind the scenes.
Final appearance of Stonewall.
Years later, Skullbuster is rebuilt [Domino (1st series) #2]. Cylla Markham became Skullbuster II, and a third, female Skullbuster appeared in in the X-Treme X-Men Annual 2000.
A touching tribute to Mystique is paid by Mystique in X-Factor (1st series) Annual #6 (third story).
Despite her death, Destiny and her visions continue to play apart in the lives of Mystique and Destiny to this day, and a splinter X-Men team even began a unsuccessful search for the remainder of Destiny’s diaries. [X-Treme X-Men #1]
Callisto was sent to seal of the underground complex beneath the ruins of Xavier’s School, and after doing so was captured by Masque. [Uncanny X-Men #253-254]
Banshee and Forge’s adventures occur in Uncanny X-Men #261-264, during which they are joined by Jean Grey.

"The X-Tinction Agenda: First Strike"
Chris Claremont (writer), Jim Lee (penciler), Art Thibert & Scott Williams (inkers), Glynis Oliver (colorist), Task Force “X“ (letters), Bob Harras (editor), Tom DeFalco (editor in chief)
Brief Description:
Having returned to the remains of Xavier’s school, Storm tries to come to terms with having been de-aged by Nanny, so an evaluation sequence is run in the Danger Room to determine the new limits of her abilities. Whereas Banshee and Forge are impressed by Storm’s resourcefulness, making up for her reduced power levels by using them in rather sneaky ways, the New Mutants’ former physical instructor, Stevie Hunter, is concerned that Ororo might permanently harm herself by overtaxing her physical limits. Even worse, Forge’s tests reveal that Storm’s body doesn’t grow - she might be stuck in the body of teenager for the rest of her life. Over a meal and a drink at Harry’s Hideaway, Ororo renews her friendship with Jean Grey, both of them happy that the other one has come back from the dead. The New Mutants, on the other hand, are not as happy. Having been living in Xavier’s underground complex for the past weeks, they don’t want to share the rather limited quarters and Wolfsbane in particular feels that the X-Men abandoned them when they chose to let the world believe them dead; she even blames Storm for the death of her teammate, Doug Ramsey. Later that day, the school is attacked by Genoshan Magistrates when some of the New Mutants are out by the lake. Surprisingly, one of the Magistrates turns out to be the missing Havok. Realizing that they are completely outnumbered and taken by surprise, Storms seals hatch to the underground complex. By this she dooms the fates of herself, Boom-Boom, Rictor, Wolfsbane and Warlock, all of them ending up captured and teleported to Genosha. On the other hand, Storm’s quick decision ensured that the Magistrates didn’t gain access to Xavier’s complex, and that Banshee, Forge, Gambit and the other half of the New Mutants remained free to eventually launch a rescue mission. In Malibu, Lila Cheney’s bodyguard tells Dazzler’s manager to leave her alone as she is no longer interested in a movie career. Suddenly, Lila Cheney returns from outer space. Before she passes out, she mentions that Charles Xavier is in terrible danger.
Characters Involved:
Banshee, Forge, Gambit, Storm (all X-Men)
Marvel Girl (X-Factor)
Boom-Boom, Cable, Cannonball, Rictor, Sunspot, Warlock, Wolfsbane (all New Mutants)
Stevie Hunter
Trish Tilby
Lila Cheney
Guido Carosella, Lila Cheney’s bodyguard
Fred Stanachek, Dazzler’s manager
Havok, Pipeline, Tam and several others (all Genoshan Magistrates)
Story Notes:
This issue is the first part of the X-Tinction Agenda crossover. It is continued in New Mutants (1st series) #95.
The X-Men first became involved with Genosha when Madelyne Pryor and her friend, Jenny Ransome (a native Genoshan) were kidnapped by the Magistrates and about to processed into mutates. Invading the island, the X-Men rescued their friends and destroyed the citadel that held the equipment for the so-called “mutate bonding process.” [Uncanny X-Men #235-238]
With Gambit in tow, the teenage Storm made her way back to the remains of Xavier’s school in Uncanny X-Men Annual #14. There they ran into Forge and Banshee, who had been searching for the missing X-Men for quite some time.
As revealed in Uncanny X-Men #267, Storm’s de-aging at the hands of Nanny occurred shortly after her capture and faked death in Uncanny X-Men #248.
The X-Men sacrificed their own lives while fighting the Adversary in Dallas. The battle was documented live on national TV and, when they were resurrected by Roma shortly thereafter, the X-Men chose to let the general public as well as their friends and families believe them dead, hoping to gain an advantage against their many foes. [Uncanny X-Men #227] The New Mutants only learned of the X-Men’s survival when Storm came back to the mansion in Uncanny X-Men Annual #14.
Cable became the New Mutants’ leader in New Mutants (1st series) #89.
As established in Classic X-Men #2, Jean and Ororo became fast friends shortly after the later one joined the X-Men. Them being the only two female X-Men at the time (Polaris having left together with Havok), and Jean helping Ororo to get over the cultural shock, they quickly established a bond that even carried on to the Phoenix as well. Truly believing herself to be Jean, the Phoenix continued Jean’s friendship with Ororo just like the real deal would have.
When Phoenix later committed suicide on the moon, [X-Men (1st series) #137] she tried to return the borrowed aspects to Jean. Keyed to her genetic code, though, these borrowed fragments ended up awakening Madelyne Pryor, a Sinister-made genetic clone of Jean. Several months after Jean was discovered alive, a somewhat deranged Madelyne tried to kill her during Inferno. Keeping Jean in a mind-lock, Madelyne committed suicide, dragging Jean along to the afterlife with her. The only way Jean could save herself was to willingly accept the portion of Phoenix residing inside Madelyne, resulting in all Jean’s mind being inhabited by all three personas. [X-Factor (1st series) #38] While the two extra identities were later purged from Jean’s mind, she retained some of the Phoenix’s and Madelyne’s memories. [X-Factor (1st series) #50]
“Rip Van Winkle“ is the main character of a short story of the same title, written by Washington Irving. In the story, Rip Van Winkle encounters some strange characters who are rumored to be ghosts, and he falls asleep under a tree after drinking some of their liquor. When he wakes up again, twenty years have passed; his wife is dead, his friends are gone and even the political system has changed with the American Revolution having taken place during his absence.
When Jean speaks about the formation of the X-Men, her choice of words is quite odd. “Thing is, we didn’t - I mean, Professor Xavier, Moira MacTaggert and I we, - I mean Professor Xavier, he didn’t found the X-Men in order to ...,” seems to imply that Jean had some part in the creation of the X-Men, and was far more than just Xavier’s first student. While it’s been later established that Jean did know some of Xavier’s secrets long before her teammates (such as the existence of Muir Island and Moira MacTaggert), it doesn’t provide a satisfying answer and leaves Jean’s apparent slip of tongue a dangling subplot.
“The Once and Future King” is a novel written by T.H. White and first published in 1958. It is loosely based on the Arthurian legend, and White re-interpreted the story and its characters as he deemed fit to describe what he would consider the ideal society. In the story, Merlin is living backwards through time, and knowing the great destiny ahead of the boy he teaches young Arthur and tries to prepare him for his eventual tenure as king.
Douglas Ramsey died in new Mutants (1st series) #60 after he took a bullet meant for Wolfsbane.
Thunderbird was killed in X-Men (1st series) #95 when he caused the aircraft of Count Nefaria to explode.
Stevie Hunter was a famous dancer until she broke her knee in an accident, ending her career. While she recovered enough to run her own dance studio in Salem Center, her knee always remained her weak spot and tended to give out every once in a while. [X-Men (1st series) #139, New Mutants Annual #1]
Havok was last seen in Uncanny X-Men #251, when the remaining four X-Men (Havok, Colossus, Dazzler and Psylocke) stepped through the Siege Perilous. Apparently, he emerged on Genosha, naked and amnesiac, same as everyone else who stepped through the magical portal. In this state, he was easily brainwashed or manipulated into serving the Genoshan government as a Magistrate.
