Set Description:

Well the importance of this run of Marvel Comics Presents issues is obvious – they chronicle Wolverine’s journey through the Weapon X program which led to the acquisition of his adamantium skeleton.

Sometime in mid-2013 I acquired the entire run of 72-84 as a mix of CGC and PGX 9.8s at a price that was simply too good to pass up. My thoughts immediately turned to not only having the PGX copies graded by CGC (despite the obvious risks of 1 or more downgrades), but also to making this run stand out even more than merely being a (hopefully) complete run of Universal 9.8s.

Naturally, my mind drifted to the Signature Series. Since I couldn’t remember seeing any Barry Windsor-Smith appearances scheduled (and I later learned he apparently won’t sign anymore), I quickly decided to have the entire run signed by Stan Lee. The funds and timing worked out so that I could accomplish this between WW Philly and WW Chicago.

The hope of course was that they would all come back as sparkling CGC SS 9.8s. As for how that dream worked out…

...since you're seeing a Universal 9.8, you've probably caught on quickly that the dream died with the first issue.

The book I originally sent off to be signed was a PGX "9.8" that I dropped the ball on by not thoroughly inspecting first. Once it came back an SS 9.4 I noticed the very large fingerprint smudge on the front cover.

Maybe if one of the few BWS signed copies ever comes up for sale I'll try to chase it down.

The books I sent to WW Chicago kicked off to a subpar start with a 9.6. Especially unfortunate is that it was a CGC Universal 9.8 that managed to downgrade itself.

So I bought a new Universal 9.8 to replace it...

This turned out to be the only issue that I sent to WW Philly that cooperated with my plan of obtaining all SS 9.8s. This one too started as a PGX 9.8 and luckily didn't suffer any cross grading issues.

Stan's signature was once again well placed on 6/1/2013.

Well WW Chicago hit a speed bump with this issue and returned a 9.6. So I broke out the jackhammer and removed said speed bump.

This copy comes courtesy of eBay seller highgrademagic-pristinecomics and was signed by Stan Lee himself on 3/26/2014 as well as contributing artist Joe Rubinstein on 9/7/2014. Silver ink was an excellent choice.

The 9.6 run ends with a deep, dark cover signed in gold ink by Stan Lee on 8/10/2013. Unfortunately the lower left corner is dinged to the point that this one will remain a 9.6.
