Brief Description:
Jock Forrester kills himself in the Everglades after learning that he is incurably ill. His pain draws the Man-Thing close and his death frees the demon D’Spayre, who temporarily destroys the Man-Thing and takes on Forrester’s form. He calls Forrester’s daughter, Lee, on the phone, inviting her to visit him. Lee is Captain of the trawler Scott Summers is working on. She invites him to come along visit her father. They are expected by D’Spayre, who imprisons them. He forces Cyclops to relive bad times in his past turned into nightmare scenarios, until Scott can’t take it anymore and jumps out of the window. Outside, he is joined by the reborn Man-Thing and, together, they face D’Spayre once more. Scott now realizes that it is despair that gives the demon strength and, refusing to give in, he finds the strength to hold him, just as the Man-Thing finds the strength to beat him – for the time being. Cyclops takes the unconscious Lee and leaves the burning house. Back at the X-Mansion, the X-Men are still trying to repair the damage to the house done by Sprite’s battle with the demon. Angel offers to help with the costs and Wolverine and Nightcrawler make fun of Kitty, who takes their taunts more serious than they were intended.

Brief Description:
Angel leaves the X-Men since he can’t stand Wolverine’s outrages anymore. Spiderwoman brings a young woman to the school, she turns out to be Banshee’s daughter of whom he had no knowledge. Moira is a little bit jealous. Storm, Spiderwoman, Stevie Hunter and Kitty Pryde go out to see the Dazzler perform, but the concert is disturbed by Caliban who sensed beings like him. Overeager Kitty tries to deal with the crisis, but is captured. Spiderwoman and Storm rescue her while Dazzler deals with the crowd. It turns out that the ugly mutant was feeling lonely and only wanted a companion. The incident makes Kitty realize how bad she has been treating Nightcrawler because of his strange looks.
In the Bermuda Triangle, Scott Summers and Lee Forrester investigate the strange island that raised in front of them. Suddenly they run into Magneto.

Brief Description:
Pursued by Emma Frost (in Storm’s body), Storm (in Emma’s body) makes her escape from the Massachusetts Academy with Kitty Pryde. Kitty awakens and is frightened, thinking that Storm is Emma. She attempts an escape and Storm’s efforts to stop her result in the car going off the road and down an embankment. Kitty falls separately, protected by her phasing power, while the car explodes upon impact. Emma leaves, thinking them both dead. Kitty finds what she thinks to be the body of Emma Frost, lying just outside the fire from the car’s explosion. Though Kitty does not believe her at first, Storm manages to convince Kitty to help her, since she cannot take the risk of the other X-Men being in danger. Meanwhile, the other X-Men believe Storm has become the new White Queen at Shaw’s side. Guards take Wolverine from the room where they are being held captive. Storm and Kitty are picked up by Stevie Hunter and driven back to the mansion. After dropping them off and saying goodbye, Stevie is captured by Emma and Shaw. Within the mansion, Harry Leland seemingly kills Wolverine in the Danger Room, but it is merely the appearance of death, created by Amanda Sefton. Storm uses Emma’s psionic powers to help Kitty unlock mansion’s hanger’s hatch, as Kitty is able to phase through the earth to get to it. The two manage to get inside before Emma and Shaw, still patrolling the outdoors, attack them. Inside, Kitty finds Wolverine and they exchange information. Kitty frees the X-Men by phasing through their inhibitor collars. Shaw is thrown by Colossus through a hole in the wall that Shaw had created, into the lake. The X-Men and the members of the Hellfire Club battle until a freak storm appears. On his way back, Shaw is struck down by an extremely intense bolt of lightning. Storm forces a psionic rapport with Emma in order to control the storm and then uses the persona exchange gun to switch their bodies back. All this occurs far up in the sky. Emma falls and Storm saves her just before impact, a favor for which Emma shows her appreciation by proceeding to attack Storm. Her patience depleted, Storm goes wild and intends to kill Emma, but is stopped by Wolverine’s reasoning that Storm is the type of person to show others a different way of resolving such situations. Since both groups fear exposure, they agree not to involve the authorities. Emma explains that, until Shaw recovers, the X-Men have nothing to fear from the Hellfire Club but, inwardly, vows that someday the X-Men will all die.

Brief Description:
The X-Men try to make repairs to the demolished mansion, but Xavier fears the cost is too high. In the meantime, Kitty tells the frightened Illyana a bedtime story and soon all the X-Men eavesdrop. Brief Description:
Cyclops is furious at Corsair and angry at Storm for keeping Corsair’s identity a secret. Corsair tries to explain that he believed his sons to have died in the Shi’ar attack, but Cyclops refuses to accept this answer. Their argument is interrupted when the three of them alongside the other X-Men are teleported aboard a Shi’ar dreadnought, where Lord Chancellor Araki informs them that Lilandra has been kidnapped by parties unknown, though the trail leads to Earth. The belligerent Admiral Samedar wants war but Xavier gets them to compromise, leaving the X-Men one day to try and find Lilandra their way. However, they have to leave two hostages and ultimately decide on Nightcrawler and Kitty Pryde. Back on Earth, the X-Men try to enlist the Avengers’ help but only find their latest member, Tigra (and their butler). Storm, in the meantime, accompanies Corsair on a trip to New York. There, they are shot at with a psi-scream, a weapon that amplifies their fears by the true culprit: Deathbird and her allies, the Brood. Storm and Corsair are saved by the arrival of the other X-Men and Tigra. While fighting their foes, Deatbird tries to shoot Xavier and ends up firing acid at Colossus instead but the recovered Storm saves him with her weather powers. Storm and Corsair then leave Colossus and Xavier behind to capture the Brood and Deathbird. They fail to do so and find that, in the meantime, Deathbird has attacked again, taking Xavier hostage and apparently killing Colossus. Aboard the Shi’ar dreadnought, Kitty uses the knowledge Xavier has implanted into her brain to hack into the Shi’ar computers.

Brief Description:
The X-Men are horrified to see Colossus lethally injured as they and Tigra are surrounded by cops. Luckily, the Starjammer arrives and beams them aboard, where Corsair learns that his comrades escaped the Shi’ar. Aboard, Colossus also is saved by the Starjammers’ doctor Sikorsky. In the meantime, Xavier awakes, sensing something wrong within himself and as a prisoner of the Brood and Deathbird. On the upside though, he shares a cell with Lilandra. Deatbird’s ally, Admiral Samedar, shows his prisoners, Nightcrawler and Sprite, footage of Deathbid seemingly killing Colossus to taunt them. The Starjammers give chase to Deathbird’s vessel only to be captured by the huge Broodship. Aboard, the Starjammers and X-Men fight the Brood while Corsair and Cyclops rescue Xavier and Lilandra. Together with them, they escape. However, the bad news is that they won’t be able to finish repairs to the damaged Starjammers before Earth’s deadline expires…

Brief Description:
The X-Men and Starjammers try their best to repair the Starjammer before the Shi’ar’s deadline for Earth runs out. In the process, Colossus reopens his wounds and needs to be treated again. Lilandra tries to reach the Shi’ar battle fleet in vain – unbeknownst to her, the traitor Samedar has killed her loyal chancellor Araki and is preventing her signal from being heard. Xavier mentally contacts Nightcrawler and Kitty aboard the Shi’ar cruiser to inform them Lilandra is safe. In the process, he becomes aware of a wrongness within him. As he examines it, he is mentally hit by something and falls into a coma. Using their ingenuity and the knowledge Xavier previously implanted in Kitty’s mind, Kurt and Kitty escape their cell and find the murdered Araki. Using the clothing-designer, Kitty scares the Shi’ar by pretending to be Dark Phoenix, while Kurt kidnaps the Shi’ar telepath Oracle. Once she can corroborate their story, some other trustworthy members of the Guard come to their side. However, the larger part of the Guard follows Samedar and battle ensues. Samedar plays dirty and all the good guys are captured. But when Samedar tries to destroy Earth the Starjammer intercepts just in the nick of time. Lilandra addresses the fleet and tells them to stand down and arrest Samedar. In the meantime, Deathbird gets back into the Brood’s good graces by offering them the X-Men as breeding material.

Brief Description:
The Brood-hunterships try their best to capture the X-Men's yacht without killing them. The X-Men and friends fight back, using their powers and weapons. Storm, though, notes that, for some reason, her powers are out of control and after accidentally destroying one Brood ship, she refuses to chance killing any more. In the fight, the Brood manage to damage the yacht's warp-drive and, against the protests of the others, Kitty steps outside to repair the drive, getting hit by a piece of shrapnel in the process. In the meantime, Carol Danvers' body reacts to the modification the Brood put her through. She turns into an energy form that is powered by a "white hole" and uses her new powers to destroy the Brood ships. Kitty's repairs completed, the yacht enters warp-space. Later, Carol uses her powers to re-energize the depleted matter-antimatter drive. While the X-Men effect their repairs, Nightcrawler is puzzled that Kitty's managed to completely recover from her lethal injuries. Storm, in the meantime, is ailing and doesn't know why, until she realizes there is a living being inside her. Realizing the truth, she steals a scoutship and leaves. Cyclops demands answers from Wolverine, who finally relents and tells the others that they are hosts to Brood embryos and what that means. Carol goes ballistic and flies outside, not realizing that the hole she?s burned into the hull endangers the others. Back on Earth, Xavier notices some strangeness about Illyana but finds he no longer has the strength to care.

Brief Description:
Near Broodworld, Binary kills a Brood outpost used to capture & enslave Acanti. As it is too late to save their prey – an ancient Acanti –Carol is forced to kill it. She is joined by Storm, who can apparently easily exist in space without any life support. Storm leads Carol to a newborn Acanti and explains that this is only an astral form – she has become one with the Acanti. Inside the space whale, Lilandra’s yacht is hidden. Carol and Storm join the X-Men inside, who are out for the Brood’s blood. Storm offers an alternative: to save the Acanti –who are preyed upon by the Brood – instead. The Acanti have a race’s soul that is caught in the carcass of their dead prophet-singer on Brood world. If they can destroy the carcass and free the soul, it could join with this newborn prophet-singer and lead the Acanti to freedom. The X-Men agree to help and come up with a plan. Storm/the Acanti and Binary will distract the Brood while the others beam down and make a run for the soul. The X-Men do exactly that, unaware that one of them is already being controlled by his or her embryo, who telepathically informs the Brood Queen about their plans. Carol and Storm run interference. Despite their vast powers, they are almost captured until unexpected help arrives in the form of the Starjammers. On the planet, the X-Men fight their way down against the world’s predators. Wolverine notices more and more that Cyclops is acting out of character, until he finally takes away his visor and reveals him as being part Brood already. Cyclops sucker punches him and Colossus and the others are surprised and beaten by the newly arrived Queen and her guards. Kitty, however, had been separated from the others some time earlier and is saved from a cadre of Brood by a cute little purple dragon. As one of the Brood destroys a tunnel wall, light emanates from the cavern behind it, calling Kitty and hurting the Brood. In the meantime, Cyclops’ metamorphosis truly starts and his powers go out of control. Wolverine throws himself into the beam and so gets rid of his shackles and takes Cyclops and the Queen as hostages, forcing the Brood to free the others. He follows Kitty’s scent to the glowing crystal cavern, where they find the Acanti soul. Unfortunately, the presence of the Queen and of the embryos in them starts to corrupt the cavern as the X-Men’s transformations start. As Wolverine plans to kill them, the Queen mocks that, even if he should succeed, there is another embryo that will doom his world. He is stopped by Carol who uses her energy powers to free the prophet-singer soul, which joins with the baby prophet singer. Before it leaves, though, it purges the X-Men of their embryos and turns the Queen into crystal. Broodworld gets torn apart as a result but the Starjammers beam the X-Men away first. On the Starjammer they are joined by Storm, who was also restored by the soul. Everybody’s in a partying mood until Wolverine announces he’s figured out what the Queen meant with her last words: there is another Brood embryo and it can only be within Charles Xavier.

The New Mutants are enjoying a quiet evening of television when, without any warning, the X-Men attack. The two teams fight while Kitty sneaks upstairs to deal with the professor, unsure whether that's right. Kitty catches the still-human Xavier sleeping and takes that as a good sign, unaware that his Brood embryo is already in control and that he has been playing possum. "Xavier" telepathically takes Kitty out and then fully transforms into a Brood Queen before the horrified others. With a lot of teamwork, the X-Men and Binary eventually manage to bring the Queen down. As Cyclops wants to deliver the killing blow, he realizes that Xavier's personality still exists alongside that of the Queen, as he begs Cyclops to kill him. Given that new wrinkle, Cyclops decides to try and save him. The Starjammers' physician, Sikorsky, and Moira MacTaggert decide to create a clone of Xavier and then transplant his mind. In the meantime, Kitty awakens and Storm realizes that she now plays second fiddle to Kitty, as opposed to Colossus and Illyana. Nightcrawler, in the meantime, is unsure whether the New Mutants will accept him. During a father/son talk, Corsair tells Cyclops that his grandparents are still alive and suggests visiting them when this is over. They are interrupted by an unexpected visitor: Gladiator, praetor of the Imperial Guard. Gladiator informs Lilandra that Deathbird has become Empress of the Shi'ar, but that she is mad and unfit to rule. There is more grave news though: Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four saved the life of the world-devourer, Galactus. Lilandra angrily contacts the Fantastic Four and promises them reprisals, should Galactus destroy any world known to the Shi'ar. In the meantime, the operation has been successfully finished. Xavier now has a new body - with working legs to boot. However, he finds he can't stand or walk as there is still a powerful psychosomatic effect caused by his PSI powers. Nevertheless, he is happy to have the X-Men back alive. He introduces the New Mutants and announces that, as of now, Kitty will join the junior team.

Brief Description:
The X-Men have been invited to Mariko Yashida’s home in preparation for her wedding to Wolverine. He happily welcomes his teammates but is shocked and angered to learn that Rogue is now an X-Man. They are being spied upon by the Silver Samurai who, in turn, is attacked by Yukio, a newly found friend of Wolverine’s. Hearing the commotion, the X-Men hurry to help. The Samurai escapes and the X-Men discuss what the reason for this attack was – probably Clan Yashida’s ties to the underworld, which Mariko’s late father, Shingen, forged, Wolverine assumes. The X-Men are unaware that the household has been infiltrated by the Samurai’s partner, Viper, who manages to poison all the X-Men, save for Storm.
Mariko, in the meantime, has received a message from the Samurai and secretly leaves to meet him, unaware that her chauffeur is Yukio. The two women trade places and Yukio goes to meet the Samurai (Mariko’s half-brother, who demands leadership of the clan), Viper and Nabatone, a Japanese crimelord. Yukio’s cover is quickly blown and a fight breaks out. As Viper runs to the limousine to kill Mariko, she is expected by Storm, whom Yukio called. Storm tries to stop the Samurai but finds her powers going out of control, almost killing her until Yukio propels them both into the water. The two injured women flee, while the Samurai threatens them. Back at the hospital, Wolverine plans to take out the Samurai and Rogue, who was less affected, thanks to her half-alien metabolism, and insists on accompanying him.
Meanwhile, in Alaska, Cyclops rifles through Madelyne Pryor’s files, trying to find out what her connection to Phoenix is. His brother, Alex, asks him to stop doing this to himself - all those similarities are just coincidence, but still Scott doubts.

Story Notes:
This is the first issue where Rogue sports a stripe of white hair in the middle of her hair instead of two streaks at her temples. No explanation for that change is given in the book, but it was probably a cosmetic decision by the staff. White streaks are usually associated with middle-age, while Rogue is approximately 18 years old at he time.
Wolverine’s conflict with Shingen, his affair with Yukio and his betrothal to Mariko all took place in the first Wolverine limited Series.
Rogue inadvertently absorbed Carol Danvers’ powers and personality permanently (Avengers annual #10). Wolverine takes this even harder than the other X-Men, since their friendship goes way back to the time before either of them was a superhero.
Viper and the Silver Samurai were last seen in New Mutants #5-6- terrorizing both the New Mutants and Team America. At that point they were believed to be responsible for the seeming death of the New Mutant Karma.
Gaijin is a derogative Japanese term for “foreigner.”
Rogue inherited her half-alien DNA from Ms. Marvel, who was a hybrid from perfect human and Kree DNA.

Juggernaut has been sighted in New York. Reluctantly, the X-Men decide to check the situation out, but decide to only get involved if Juggernaut truly commits a crime. They observe Cain Marko dong some legit business in a bank when suddenly Nimrod attacks Juggernaut, as well as Shadowcat and Rachel who are also in the lobby on stakeout. The two powerhouses take the fight outside to a building site and the other X-Men join the battle. However, Nimrod is more than match for them and quickly takes out most of the X-Men and Juggernaut. Following an idea of Kitty’s, Rogue absorbs most of her teammates’ powers and attacks Nimrod, who cannot handle the conflicting information and teleports away. The X-Men leave, allowing Juggernaut to escape while the media believe the X-Men to be the aggressors. In Kenya, Ororo saves a young woman from being raped by a German tourist and his party. In the USSR, KGB official Major Vazhin wonders why the USA seems hell-bent on turning the heroic X-Men into villains.

Signature Series book. Beautiful cover of Dazzler being "managed" by Storm
Dazzler is influenced by the Maurauder Malice. During a concert she exposes her cover of being a mere keyborder and steals the limelight from Lila Cheney. Later on she dances in a nightclub and makes no secret of her light powers. Lila is concerned and calls the X-Men. Wolverine, Storm, Rogue and Psylocke investigate, and Malice does some body-jumping, making the X-Men fight each other. Finally Betsy understands what’s going on and they make Malice enter Storm, who has the will power to resist the Marauder’s influence. The psychic entity then leaves, though feeling victorious as she made the X-Men say things to each other that will not be easy to forget. Dazzler is told to join the X-Men, as she is a too obvious target for the Marauders.

It's not until Longshot's crazy luck enters the equation that Psylocke is beaten. Afterwards they meet for breakfast with Banshee, who goes over their training with them. His main gripe is lack of teamwork. Later on, the X-Men are in the gym working out. Callisto and Dazzler end up going head to head, resulting in Dazzler storming off and heading to the mainland. Once there she goes to a pub and has the time of her life. She even wonders if she should stay an X-Men. After the party's over, she leaves and is almost run down by Cain Marko. Intent on proving herself, she goes after him. It turns out that Juggernaut's a big fan of her work and doesn't want to fight her. It's too bad that Dazzler doesn't feel that way. After none of her tricks work, she waits for Juggs to get close. When he's near, she throws everything she has at him. It doesn't work and the stress kills her, or so Juggernaut thinks.

Psylocke was given bionic eyes by Mojo in New Mutants Annual #2.
When Rogue was still a member of the Brotherhood of evil Mutants, she and Dazzler had a longstanding feud running in Dazzler's own title [Dazzler # 22-24; 28].
The Mary Rose /Dr. Doom subplot is in reference to events coming up in the "Fantastic Four vs. The X-Men" limited series.
Longshot makes a humorous comment about breakfast, "Dead, burned animal flesh and unborn baby birds? Yum!"
Rogue replies, "Don't be gross, Longshot, those are just ham 'n' eggs."
