Set Description:
The Black KnightBesides Thor, there is—arguably—only one true superhero: the Black Knight. He may not be the traditional knight in shining armor who saves innocent princesses, but he is certainly a character with depth and complexity, and certainly my favorite. The Black Knight, whose true identity is Dane Whitman, is a man of honor, courage, and a sense of duty, often caught between his legacy and his desire to create his own path. Wielding the mystical Ebony Blade, he is both a formidable warrior and a tragic figure, burdened by the sword’s dark history and its corrupting influence. Though his armor is far from shining, and his mission is far more grounded in real-world struggles, the Black Knight stands as a true hero in the Marvel Universe—combining the heart of a knight with the soul of a complex, flawed man. Whether fighting alongside the Avengers or standing solo, Dane Whitman proves that a hero isn’t defined by their appearance, but by the choices they make. With this collection, I aim to honor the Black Knight, and as outlined in the "Collecting Goal", I strive to include all the issues featuring this hero created by Marvel. Since the Black Knight is a relatively obscure and long-established character, finding these comics in decent condition at an affordable price can be a challenge. I still find myself debating which specific issues to include in this collection, but ultimately, time will tell what fits and what doesn’t. More details about Black Knight series & issues can be found at Marvel Fandom (Black Knight, Vol. 2), Marvel Fandom (Black Knight: MDCU), Marvel Fandom (Black Knight: Curse of the Ebony Blade), Marvel Fandom (True Believers: King in Black - Black Knight #1), and Marvel Fandom (Marvel Super-Heroes #17). This issue remains a pivotal chapter in the character’s development and continues to be a key part of the Black Knight's enduring appeal among fans. In this issue, the legendary Black Knight, Dane Whitman, makes his debut in the Silver Age of Comics. This issue is notable for introducing the modern incarnation of the Black Knight, a character steeped in both honor and tragedy. - The Ebony Blade: A mystical weapon of great power and tragic history.
- Roy Thomas and John Buscema: The creative team behind the comic's debut of the modern Black Knight.

SignificanceBlack Knight #1 (1990) is a key chapter in the Black Knight's saga, marking a return to the character's roots while setting up new adventures and challenges. Black Knight #2 (1990)Black Knight #2 (1990) continues the four-issue limited series with Dane Whitman caught between his own identity and the spirit of his heroic ancestor, Sir Percy of Scandia. Titled “In the Dread of Night”, the issue pushes the story deeper into Arthurian magic, family legacy, and the curse of the Ebony Blade. It also brings Captain Britain into the adventure, expanding the series’ connection to Marvel’s mystical British mythology. In this issue, the Black Knight—still under the influence of Sir Percy’s spirit—travels with Victoria Bentley to seek Captain Britain’s help in locating the hidden castle of Morgan Le Fay. As the search leads them toward the Irish coast, Dane briefly regains control of himself when he removes his helmet. However, the relief is short-lived, as the curse of the Ebony Blade begins to overtake him once again, threatening to transform him into iron. The danger escalates when Dreadknight, serving Morgan Le Fay and Mordred, attacks Dane and his allies. Captain Britain joins the fight, but Dane is forced into a painful choice: remain himself and risk being destroyed by the curse, or allow Sir Percy to take control again in order to survive the battle. This conflict makes the issue an important continuation of Dane’s struggle between heroism, inheritance, and loss of self. SignificanceBlack Knight #2 (1990) is significant because it advances the central conflict of the limited series: Dane Whitman’s battle against both external enemies and the supernatural legacy of the Ebony Blade. The issue strengthens the connection between the modern Black Knight and the Arthurian past, while also positioning Morgan Le Fay and Mordred as major threats. By adding Captain Britain to the story, the issue broadens the mystical scope of the series and ties Dane’s quest more closely to Marvel’s larger world of British heroes and legends. Key Elements- Dane Whitman: The modern Black Knight, struggling to maintain control of his own body and destiny.
- Sir Percy of Scandia: Dane’s ancestor, whose spirit continues to play a major role in the Black Knight’s survival and identity.
- The Ebony Blade: The cursed mystical sword whose power threatens to consume Dane.
- Captain Britain: A key guest star who aids Dane and Victoria in their search for Morgan Le Fay’s castle.
- Victoria Bentley: Dane’s ally in the quest against Morgan Le Fay and Mordred.
- Dreadknight: The villainous attacker sent against the Black Knight and his allies.
- Morgan Le Fay and Mordred: The mystical antagonists manipulating events from behind the scenes.
- Roy Thomas, Dann Thomas, and Tony DeZuniga: The creative team behind the issue’s blend of superhero action, sword-and-sorcery adventure, and Arthurian mythology.

Black Knight #3 (1990)Dane Whitman - the Black Knight - is caught in a battle between his family legacy, the cursed Ebony Blade, and dark mystical forces. He has been haunted by visions and supernatural enemies connected to the blood curse on the blade. He’s joined by Victoria Bentley, a mystic and ally of Doctor Strange. Balor and the Valkyr appear in this issue, they are nightmare entities used to test Dane’s resolve, showing how deep the curse of the Ebony Blade goes. They bring horror, myth, and psychological drama together - which is why this issue stands out. SignificanceThis issue helps redefine the Ebony Blade as a double-edged legacy, not just a cool weapon. It is (as the whole series is) one of the first to really explore the Ebony Blade’s curse in depth - not just as a magical weapon, but as a corrupting legacy that psychologically and spiritually affects its wielder. Key Elements- Deepens the Ebony Blade Curse Mythos: The idea that violence “feeds” the blade and drives its bearer toward madness or evil becomes a core theme in future stories, especially "Captain Britain and MI:13", "The Avengers (Jason Aaron era)", and even in the MCU post-credit tease with Kit Harington’s Dane Whitman
- Psychological Trial for Dane Whitman: This issue is essentially Dane Whitman’s “Dark Night of the Soul” - where he confronts a vision of himself corrupted by the blade, faces mythical threats like Balor and the Valkyr, and undergoes a mystical ritual guided by Doctor Strange. It's a crucial character study moment, which draws a straight line from this issue to his later moral dilemmas and identity crises.
- Doctor Strange's Involvement: Doctor Strange’s presence elevates the story. This isn’t just a knight swinging a sword - it’s about magic, legacy, and inner demons. Strange adds gravitas and connects Dane more deeply to the mystic side of the Marvel Universe.
