Set Description:

About Spawn Newsstand Editions:

Spawn Newsstand Editions began in 1992,

and were sold (with a few exceptions) until August 2004,

making them the first Image comic to have a newsstand edition...

and also the last!

They were generally printed on a thinner newsprint paper,

with a thinner paperstock for the cover than the direct editions.

They almost always have a barcode on the front cover

(unlike the direct editions), which is usually

the easiest way to spot them.

For Spawn comics, the newsstand editions are much harder

to find than the direct editions, having been printed in

vastly smaller quantities. Making collecting even more

difficult, they are much harder to find in good condition

as the thinner paper and newsstand racks led to a lot more

damage to the books than typical direct editions.

Note: There were also a large number of variants

for these issues, which can be found

in my custom Spawn Newsstands set.

About this set:

This set is comprised of all newsstand editions from

the main Spawn series (excluding variants).

Newsstands ran from Spawn #1-137 (excluding 113-115).

My set is 100% complete (134 books) and all but 4 are 9.4 or higher.

Here are the grade breakdowns:

9.8 = 69

9.6 = 46

9.4 = 15

9.2 = 4

Notable Books:

Spawn #1:

The book that started it all. The newsstand version was somewhat unique in that the cover was printed on the same paper stock as the direct edition.

Beginning with issue #2, the newsstand covers were typically printed on a thinner paper.

Spawn #64:

The direct edition of this book originally came polybagged with a toy catalog, whereas the newsstand edition did not.

It was unique, however, in that the barcode was placed on the back cover for the first (and only) time.

Spawn #69, 70, & 71:

These books had a much smaller distribution than typical newsstand editions, making them extremely rare. They were also printed on the same glossy stock as the direct editions.

Spawn #101-105 and 109:

There were a large number of variations on these books, mostly related to corrections made to the barcodes. There were stickers placed on many of them (by the manufacturer) to correct the issues, but the stickers themselves went through various changes too.

Spawn #111:

This is the grail book for Spawn newsstand collectors. It was scheduled to be on sale the week of the September 11 attacks, and was never distributed. Only 2 copies have ever been found! No set is complete without this issue, and as of now, there can be only two!

Interestingly, both known copies are signed, so I think they were probably 'comp' copies given directly to the artists.

A Note About SpawnWorld:

I'm the owner/creator of SpawnWorld, the world's largest Spawn site. For 25 years and running I've been trying to catalog all Spawn comics, characters, and collectibles. The site is 100% free (not even any advertising!) and the best place to find info related to collecting Spawn. Specifically, if you'd like to learn more about Spawn newsstand editions, you can read my full explanation and checklist HERE. All books in my CGC sets (and 99% of all items on the site) are from my personal collection.
