This issue begins a compelling storyline filled with emotional complexity and art work to complement the mood. Superman: The Exile and Other Stories Omnibus is a favorite in my library. I must say, I roll my eyes at overdone homages/cover swipes for books like Amazing Fantasy #15, Action Comics #1 and Detective Comics #27 (it’s been done to death, it’s a tired gimmick) but this cover swipe is allowed.

I received a raw copy of this issue along with a few other Superman back issues as a gift from my older brother in the mid 90s. I still have that copy and cherish it. I still enjoy the moody and atmospheric art (and story) inside. When I started reading and collecting Superman comics in early 1994 I became obsessed with finding back issues of Superman books from 1987 to 1993. At the time (probably 1995) a four year old comic was old to me, printed from a time I could vaguely recall as it was most of my lifetime ago. When I saw this piece on eBay for a fair price and free shipping I couldn’t resist.

I first purchased this exact piece (same certification number) in 2019, and then sold it in 2021. I cannot recall why and I came to regret that decision. I told myself I would seek out another 9.8 graded copy someday. In December of 2025 I saw this piece listed on eBay. I checked the certification number for the grade date and found to my surprise that it was the same piece I had purchased and sold. I’m grateful to have this book back home in my collection. The internet and eBay can make the world a small place. How could I have parted with this piece? Just look at that cover! I can almost hear the skeletons screaming.

“Somewhere else...
…Doomsday is coming!”
This gorgeous book was a self submission. When I found this particular copy at my LCS, Escape Velocity Comics in Colorado Springs, CO for only $3.00 I scooped it up right away. I already had another copy of this issue in 9.8 grade but I couldn’t resist submitting this one. Some would say it’s a waste of money to submit books you already have graded, especially when you factor in shipping and pressing, but this is a special book to me, and I enjoy the process. I was also able to sell my previous 9.8 of this issue right away on eBay for a nice profit not long after adding this piece to my set. I love this infinity cover.

I waited several years for a CGC 9.8 copy that had the right price and sharp corners (this black cover really highlights any flaws). With so many graded copies of this particular issue out there, I knew I could wait.

This is one of the better "Reign of the Supermen" covers. The story inside is also well written, about Daily Planet bullpen reporter Ron Troupe. Troupe, who first appeared in Adventures of Superman #480 (7/91) proves to be a worthy successor to the late Clark Kent, by penning a story that is not only a tribute but also a first hand account of the Cyborg Superman's intervention in a terrorist attack on the White House and meeting with then president Bill Clinton. Troupe's article proved Clark Kent was a great reporter and that he was ready to step up and carry on his legacy.

The cover art has grown on me since I got a 9.8 example. The atomic explosion and wrath of the Cyborg Superman set the tone for the story nicely. My only complaint is petty, the face of the Eradicator a.k.a. the Last Son of Krypton is that of an old man. The cover should have left him with his yellow visor and hair intact, we actually don't see him as an injured old man until Action Comics #690 (08/93), after he rematerializes in the Fortress of Solitude. The back cover ad for Mortal Kombat takes me back to grade school.

This may be my favorite 'Reign' cover, Dan Jurgens and Brett Breeding's likeness of Superman is still one of my favorite versions of Superman, that lead to me becoming a life long fan. The black suit donned by our hero looks good with that silver S logo! The black suit is actually Kryptonian recovery gear, used for healing by absorbing sun light.

An Epilogue for “Reign of the Supermen”, Coast City and the whole Death and Return of Superman Saga. Superman along with many heroes in the DC Universe clean up the wreckage of Engine City, over what was once Coast City, destroyed by Cyborg Superman. This issue also serves as a prologue to “Emerald Twilight” (Green Lantern Vol. 3 #'s 48-50), the breaking of Hal Jordan.
