Let's Start over...
Hi, I'm Tnerb, and I'm a comic book collector. Marvel still seems to capture my heart (and my wallet), but I have dabbled into other companies. In fact when I first heard about a third party grading company, I thought the idea was ludicrous. Why would anyone want to purchase a comic book they could never read?
It was years later that I found out Steve Borock made sure the comic book could be "cracked out" of its shell if the buyer/collector wanted to read it.
In 2007 (approximately) I purchased my first two CGC graded comic books. This was originally for me to have something akin to a seashell from the Jersey Shore. But it was finally at a comic book convention, albeit a small one, that I saw a copy of New Mutants #1 in a 9.8. I realized, CGC wasn't about not reading comic books, but having the best comic possible. For me, this was a 9.8, for Bagofleas it was the impeccable Gem Mint ten.
When I first started to collect this series, my favorite series, I was in awe at what Bagofleas had put together, and I followed in his footsteps. I wanted a set full of 9.8 with white pages or better. Even though the white pages didn't bother me as much as it does him, I just wanted to have them all be direct market editions.
It took a few years but my diligence in collecting this set catapulted me into first place. I even took the award for best Copper set. This was for 2012. In 2013 Bagofleas, who I have come to know as my little brother took over his rightful throne. The irony of it is, I helped him, and continue to help him.
Now I have decided, since I believe I will never catch him again to change my parameters. I have a few sets under the New Mutants banner. That is currently 3 out of the 220 of the most underpointed (made up word) set there is. I will still have three sets, but now I will have a signed set, an unsigned set, and my original copies, the latter being filled with both signed and unsigned copies.
This will take time. It is mid May and I will take my time and leave my set obscured until I get to the finish line. I am not worried about the grade as much as I am the signature. For instance, this first set was my first foray into completing a set will change. It will now have a 9.6 here or there, or be completely empty until I attain a SS copy.
So for now I will blaze my own trail and even though I am way behind Bagofleas in first place, when he looks behind, he will know that I am there.

Personal Thoughts:
Purchased as a 9.8 and cracked out for not only the signatures of Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod, but a small sketch of Cannon ball on the back for good measure.
Technically, wouldn't Sam Guthrie be the first recruited member since he was originally pitted against Shan, Daniel, Roberto, and Rahne when they fought against him?
The first time I tried to purchase a graded 9.8 copy was on Comic Link. I lost. I also lost the second time. I finally purchased my first 9.8 copy already signed and have since sold that one after this copy came back and retained the 9.8.
I met the person that I lost against at the NYCC when he had the book cracked out for signatures. Since then I have considered any time I lost a book in a bidding war to be Wallaced.

Originally this was supposed to be issue #1. Due to a delay in publishing with the new Marvel Graphic Novels, Jim Shooter and Louise Jones changed the work in progress while adding ten pages in the process Bob Mcleod worked on some of these pages during his honeymoon. The original deal was that he could ink his own pencils and Louise did not want to break that promise.

Personal Thoughts
This copy is not my original copy of the New Mutants. My original copy is graded a 6.0 and has that huge UPC code in place of Spider-Man's face. In fact this isn't even my first 9.8 copy, which was sold to another member of the registry. This comic I picked up at the same place I purchased the aforementioned 9.8 and I swore it would attain a gem mint 10, easily.
This naivety was based off the assumption I knew something. It was also because of the belief that the back cover has to be as nice as the front cover. So when I narrowed down a few books to get signed by Stan Lee, this was one of them. It came back a 9.6. I could deal with that, especially after what I learned from the experience. Many of my experiences with CGC were because I was willing to put my money where my mouth was.
I decided that this book should have another signature on it, so not even after a year I had it signed by Bob McLeod. This time it dropped to a 9.4. Now, the shame began to take hold. A 9.4 was like being a step-child. OK, I am a step-Child and to be honest, it feels great, but if you can't make fun of the idea of a red headed step-child being under appreciated, how can I show the despair I felt becoming the owner of such a low grade, by modern age standards.
At Wizard World 2013, I turned this book over with my Daredevil #1 (*see Daredevil #1...that is how you do it Marvel, with an "*" next to a foot note, not a brand new issue one again and again and again.)
I only wanted Matt Nelson to look at it, because if it couldn't attain a 9.8, I didn't want it pressed and graded again without asking him first.. I walked around, but it was too late. The only answer I got was that they both could improve in grade with a press. It was a long harrowing weekend not knowing what the grade was. I was in agony. Do you know what it is like to have to wait THREE WHOLE DAYS to get your grades back, I mean that is almost equivalent to being four weeks late after a promised 36 business day turnaround.
My Daredevil #1 went up to a four (check it out) and The New Mutants #1 went up to a 9.8. I have dabbles with the idea of selling it, but can i really get rid of a double signature?

Original Comments: Issue #2 was my introduction to the Sentinels. After an amazing first issue we are rewarded with another great comic book. This book came out in April of 1983. I have yet to start collecting comic books, even though I was already buying them. Mostly, they were books from the 3 for a $1 rack. These "3-4-$1" books were purchased at a shop on Bustleton ave in the "Far" Northeast section of Philadelphia. The shop was called Comic Investments. Eventually this store would move and another would rise from its ashes called ComiCards. Eventually that store would get my weekly allowance, if not my dinner money. I scrounged around for many of the issues before issue 15, but unfortunately I do not know where I purchased all of them. I must figure they were either purchased on Bustleton ave, or maybe Fat Jack's, my current LCS.
The cover is dynamic, showing four members of the team. Sunspot seems ready to attack although out of reach, Shan's mental abilities are far from useful, but could she be telling Sam to hurl himself at the metal monstrosities.
These early issues showed the team grow. They were characters that were not much older than me. It is amazing how now, I am so much older than them.

I purchased this from World Wide Comics. At first I thought that the Golden State stickers they had across numerous issues was the newest pedigree, and maybe one day they will get a pedigree status, but right now, it is only just from a really good collection. I originally wanted this signed in red. if you look at the beginning of the signature the silver ink has a red tint. This is probably one of the best signatures I had placed on any of my comic books. The silver against the black background is outstanding.
The signature was placed on the dark shadow permeating from Danielle Moonstar. And when I say dark, I don't just mean black, but the sinister emanation seemingly controlling the dagger in her hands. Her team mates in the background already succumbed to whatever transpired in between the pages.

Original thoughts: Out of the First 14 issues of the series I fell in love with this cover. The contrast and fear of each member etched onto their faces. This was also the third time in four issues that Wolfsbane was rendered either unconscious or in peril. This is one of the books I turned over at Baltimore in 2011 to be signed by this illustrious artist. The most interesting thing is Bob McLeod was not my first New Mutant Artist, it was Sal Buscema and Tom Mandrake.
The signature is placed in the lower right hand corner. Straight on, in silver, the signature blends in, even among the "red fire", but at the right angle...it pops.

These earlier issues were purchased out of order. It wasn't until issue 15 when I started to collect not only this series, but comic books as well. My pre-teen self scoured the internet...oh wait, that wasn't around yet. As I do today, I like to go into different comic book shops. The two that I had were on Bustleton avenue, Sansom street, and a place on Castor ave. I don't think I ever found anything anywhere else besides my original two, at least until issue 8 (*see issue 8).
A little about this issue. This was my first PGX copy I ever bought. It was graded as a 9.9. Of course, it was also PGX so it wasn't good enough. I was stilldiligently purchasing graded comic books to catch up to Bagofleas. If buying a PGX copy to get graded by CGC was a way to do it, then I had to use the means available.
After turning it over to CGC, it returned a 9.8. This was before I started to really go after signature series books. So many of my New Mutants collection were purchased graded and then signed. This just adds up, financially. After cracking this book I turned it over with a few books at my first Baltimore Comic Book Convention. I love silver signatures, as well as Bronze and I wonder if given the opportunity to have Amando Gil sign it, will I crack it again?

This is the second issue I had purchased for number six. The first one was not centered and I always thought it took away from the eye appeal of the comic book. Eventually I tracked down another one and had it signed by Bob McLeod at another convention. This time in my hometown of Philadelphia. It is back to Rahne's turn to be the unconscious victim again. Danielle is over her, who happens to share a mental rapport with her when her team mate is in wolf form. The Silver Samurai looks shocked as Cannonball not only blasts through the wall, but manages to knock the "M" and "U" of the title itself. Now that is what I call power.
Bob's signature is placed below the spread legs of the Samurai in Black. It almost seems to fit there because a little bit lower is Bob's original signature published on each copy, maybe a green label should have been given.

Tell me who didn't think this was a carbon copy of Mr. T. After issue one was signed by not only Bob McLeod but Stan Lee I knew that I had to have multiple signatures if I could get them. I was not the only one who felt this way because my brother took a few to the Baltimore Comicon in 2013 where I met him for the first time. I'm adopted. Anyway, we thought a triple signature would be awesome, especially when one of those signatures was Sal Buscema himself. The only thing I do regret is I didn't get to meet him. CGC set up a private signing and when I get the chance again, I will wait just to thank him for all the enjoyment he has given me.
This book was originally purchased from World Wide Comics, and Stephen Ritter was nice enough to give me some Golden State stickers to replace on the slab for the newly acquired 9.8 SS copy. Out of all the earlier issues, (meaning before 15, this is probably my least favorite, and yet it inpacted me the most. There was something about word balloons on covers that I simply fell in love with. My first experience with that type of cover was Sub mariner #38. (*see the asterik...go check it out). Issue seven just happens to be the first New Mutants covers with this cover scheme. Sure the first six covers were great but when Axe utter "One more Mutie tick boy-- An' your Mama Dies!". This seems to be such a contradiction.
Stan Lee created the X-men with a message in mind, Why can't we get along. I never understood why someone who was repressed would ever harbor those feeling against each other. I don't believ in being politically correct, just morally, In the world of comics, a writer can place his thoughts and his grievances in the mouths of his characters. I just don't understand why one perceived inority would hate another, and using the term mutie is a very harsh word in the world of Marvel.
Of course nothing said that better over in the Dazzler part of the universe when the name Mutie was spray painted all over her movie posters.
Any way, hate in any aspect is just wrong, but this triple signed book is beautifel. Signed by Sal Buscema, Louise Simonson (Louise Jones as an editor)and Bob Mcleod have me fearing to ever get the great Chris Claremont on it.

Issue eight was the issues that could have killed me. My mom and dad have been divorced for a long time. At this point of my fathers life he was remarried and living in Ventnor heights. He was running a business for someone and it included a house directly over the bay. It was also a few blocks away from the ocean...and a couple miles away from a comic book shop.
I had no idea where it was, but one day I decided to trek out there and see what they had. I remember there was a bite in the air because I tried walking there on the sunny side. It was morning and a crisp air was still sweeping in from the ocean. I was young enough to get yelled at for walking this far away from home, but old enough to thin that jackets weren't cool.
I found the show before it opened, which was a good thing, but had to wander the streets forever (probably ten to fifteen minutes) until they opened.
I don't know how many I purchased, but the one that sticks out in my mind the most was a copy of New Mutants #8. I think I bought it for either a $1, or a $1.50. That was big money to me at the time.
This was the first cover that shows Sam in Peril. On the covers of issue 2,4, and 6 show young Sam "blasting", but here he is under the blade of who might very well be the newest New Mutant.
This was triple signed in Baltimore, as was the issues before.
We are also introduced to Amara Aquilla who would later become Magma. This is the first time the series produced a new character. Unfortunately we cannot consider the original team as such since they were either created in Marvel Team-Up #100 or MGN #4.

issue ten has Sunspot battling against Cannonball in a modern day throwback to Rome. Rahne and Danielle both watch from the side lines.
This is also where we are introduced to the future Black Queen, Selene. This is only nine issues into the series and the second issue that has a first appearance. CGC has yet to recognize that.
Bob McLeod is slowly being ousted. The workload possibly a bit too much. Sal Buscema is taking over more and Tom Mandrake makes his debut with my favorite title, an artist I must say if he never worled on this title, I might never have started collecting.

Issue ten has Cannonball blasting again. That is sixty percent of the covers so far. I am starting to think that Cannonball is one of the favorites, because he is also on 9 out of 10 covers. More than any other team member. The next two belong to Sunspot and Mirage, they are on 7 out of the first ten covers. This does not include the MGN.
On the previous issue Sunspot and Cannonball are forced to fight each other. This cover depicts them fighting together and kicking @$$. This is the last issue Bob Mcleod had anything to do with until the first annual, which was followed by issue 75 and Annual #4. It is only fitting that the single signature written in bronze is by Bob McLeod.

It is assistant editor's month. Bob Mcleod has moved on to other books. The cover was by both Tom Mandrake and Walt Simonson. This triple signed comic book was purchased as a universal 9.8 from World Wide Comics. It is the only one of the series that has the great Walter Simonson attached to it. All three signatures were attained at the Baltimore Comic Con. The only thing I really dislike about this cover is the manufacturing defect showing right through Magma's fiery hair.
I was afraid of a drop in grade, even though the book does look great. How often is it that I can get three great people on it.

Another Golden State copy that I cracked for signatures. I carefully bagged and boarded it. I took it with me for Sal Buscema to sign on the first weekend I met my lil bro. I was able to also add Louise Simonson to the signature series . After all she did edit it and would later write a good portion of the New Mutants Lore.
Magma is shown larger than life, her face malicious. Did she actually grow to the size of Galactus and threaten those team members that accepted her into their fold.
this was one of those issues that I still had to search the back issue bins for. I wasn't courageous at the time to take the comic book out of the bag. I imagine I couldn't wait until I got home and read it.

I didn't have anyone show me the ins and outs of comic book collecting. I simply looked at what I liked and bought it. If I liked it, I bought the next one. Primarily this was between DC and Marvel. I didn't pay attention to the artist or the writer, just the way the book looked. And now all these years later as I am rewriting every single comic description I have for the New Mutants set, this one being written at 2 in the morning, I realized something I have never realized before. The cover of issue 13, where the term "X-babies" was first made was done by none other than Bret Blevins. Bret Blevins had a lot to do with many of the issues between 49 through 83. But yet as I stare closer to this cover I see the style that I became so used to later in the run, including the elusive issue #58.
The other thing is this issue has another first appearance for the New Mutants. This time with Doug Ramsey. Let's recap for this set. The MGN introduces four characters. Issue eight introduces Amara, who becomes Magma. Issue nine introduced Selene, the Black Queen (6), and this latest issue has the titles 7th first appearance. No other title since the sixties has there been that many new characters created within the first 14 issue of a title. Oh by the way, Axe was created in issue 7 (8), the Demon Bear (9) who created havoc when Bill Sienkiewicz took over.
Anyway. This cover is the thrid cover to have those beautiful word balloons. I cracked a 9.8 copy, brought the books to Baltimore and had them signed for a double signature series. It returned to me as a 9.8.

This was one of the first books I purchased twice. This happened very early on in history of collecting. Another New Member was added. This time the earliest created character, although she morphed in X-Men #160 and the Magik Limited series, Illyana Rasputin, will be the most expensive pick up of any first appearance of the New Mutants.
The cover depicts S'Ym, battling the teammates of Magik. her Uncocnsious form being held by a purple demon who looks like he could give the incredible Hulk a run for his money, a being who killed Wolverine and uses his claws as toothpicks.
This is the last issue that I purchased out of order. The next one, issue 15, (because that's what comes after 14) was the beginning of it all for me. The focal point of no return. After this every single New Mutant issue I purchased in numerical order.
