Set Description:

2024 - Incredible progress on the set this year! My friendly competition with PACole on this set ended when he sold his collection. I picked up nine books from his set including his beautiful #10 and stunning #32 in 9.6 (which upgraded my 5.5 copy!). I now have 1-29 in the registry consecutive and am only six issues away from a complete registry set!

2023 - A banner year for the set! I graded all of my raw issues and scored some absolute stunners from an original owner collection! The earliest issue of Sugar and Spike to be graded at 9.4 is the stunning white paged upgrade to #29 I recently added to the set! That gives me nine more issues to complete the run, a total of 89 out of 98. Of those I expect #4 to be the toughest.

2022 - No real updates in some time until late 2022 when I picked up some real gems. Upgrades to # 31, a low grade 11, and super nice copies of 22, 24, 26, 27, 29, and ANOTHER nice 31. Quite the haul, My 20’s have fleshed out really nice!

2020 - I have picked up a couple of nice books to add to the set. I upgraded my #5 from a 7.0 to a 9.0, I slabbed three raw books and added them to the set, #20, #25, and #28. I also just purchased a raw #6 and #7 that I just sent in to be graded. They will be added later on. That will bring my total number in the set to 72 after all of those books have been added. The hunt continues!

2019 - Only added three books this year - a #3 giving me 1-3, a nice number #9 and a raw #28. I still have a couple of other raw issues I could slab. As I expected, it’s been slow going after Comic-Con 2017 when I bought the #1 and three other early raw issues. I knew this would happen once I completed most of the later issues.

2017 - While my set has dropped to #2 in the rankings, I haven’t lost any interest in still pursuing more issues, the journey is the destination! As of this writing, with my raw issues, I have 25 issues left to complete the set.

So why collect Sugar and Spike? - I have always loved Sugar and Spike, they are kind of unique in the comic world, and I believe that Sheldon Mayer was a comic book genius. There just aren’t many artist/writers who could work on a series for 15 years and crank out the quality that was Sugar and Spike from 1956 to 1971.

There are a number of people I am aware of that have complete runs of Sugar and Spike. I had bought the odd issue here and there, mostly in low grade just to read. When I was getting close to completing my collecting goals on some other titles though, I started thinking about Sugar and Spike.

I decided in 2010 that I would buy mostly high grade copies of Sugar and Spike and try to put 20-25 issues together that spanned the run. Being that I am a completest style collector, I should have known as soon as I hit my goal I would just keep on going. Today I have 89 graded issues and I plan to complete the run with nine issues remaining.

Thank goodness for pedigrees, I have copies of Oakland, Savannah, Brad Square, Boston, and Don and Maggie copies. If not for these, high grade issues would be much tougher to find.

These are quickly becoming some my favorite books in my comic collection. If you have never opened up an issue of Sugar and Spike, you really should take a look, there isn't another comic like it. Give them a try, as the saying goes…

”You’ll like…Sugar and Spike!”
