What an odd image by Orlando. I mean - we have all the classic sword & sorcery elements, right? Damsel in distress wearing a bikini of sorts (Not a blonde though), we have a ripped swordsman with a weirdly shaped sword that's wider at the tip than where it meets the crosspiece, plus it has a shiny pair of testicles for a pommel, and we have a truly bizarre looking monster - an absolute freakshow, yet still somehow based on two arms and two legs. Of course it's always difficutl to really capture depth of field where the background color is a bright yellow, and really this image doesn't do that well, even with the blue cave walls.
Overall - I think this is just too weird for me - then again, this is Weird Worlds. I just can't see me parting with my hard earned 20 cents to buy this off the spinner rack.

What an incredible Kaluta cover. Sharp diagonals; ant's eye view; great, bold yellow stripe; intense action; and great draftmanship. The tension between the swordfighters is so strong that I don't even see the text boxes - just the sinew and muscle on our protagonist.

Another bloody incredible Kaluta cover. This time with the fuschia and green diagonal - and again it is the tension between the protagonist and his foes that make the cover - the smoke curling up from the guns, the hair and fangs on the beast-men. This time though, the text boxes do intrude too much in the great fuschia field and should have been smaller or not there at all. They're too close to the sword and too close to the hair and create a distracting or competing tension with the artwork.

Original content - Ironwolf, or Iron Wolf, or Captain Iron Wolf, or some such. I don't think Denny could make up his mind. The cover is sooooo classically Chaykin - which is to say the protagonist's sword is facing the wrong way. He does love to draw his swordsmen with their sword pointed behind them. Sure it opens up the chest so you can see how manly they are and you can do armor details and stuff. But it also opens up the chest so someone can stab them, you know, in the chest where are the important bits are. So, also, let me tell you about leather boots that come up over your knee: just no. They're really hot, they bind up behind your knees when you fight, and they have to be made out of really thick leather to stand up - like mine are buffalo are some such. Hot, nasty, sweaty boots. So based on this cover, I'm not exactly sure how there was a 2nd & 3rd appearance of IW before the title ended with issue 10 - because he he's gonna lose his head. Clearly, cleanly chopped off. No helm, no gorget, no chance he's whipping that sword around from behind him to his off side to deflect that blow. I mean, I guess he could dive forward and roll - but yeah - only if he started right now.
Overall - I just don't know if I would have blown 20 cents on this issue based on the cover art. Maybe if I'd been reading Weird Worlds previously - but it looks kinda iffy, and the character name is silly.

And how can we tell it's not a Chaykin cover? Because ol' Ironwolf has his sword in front of him. Damn long sword too - not unimaginably so, but noticeably. I like the monster over the doorway image and this one has a slightly different, birds-eye point of view. I wonder if it is based on an unused preliminary sketch for one of the horror titles Cardy was likely working on.
As much as most of the image is dark - the odd shape created by the open door and cast light is really eye catching. It doesn't even matter that the monster appears to be standing on a nonexistent doorjamb.
Overall - particularly for the Ironwolf short run - this is a pretty damn good cover. Yeah, I probably would have blown 20 cents on it.

Last issue of the run - and the third and final appearance of Ironwolf. With a cover by the third different artist. Now don't get me wrong, I like Chaykin and Cardy, but this has got to be the best image of Ironwolf of the three covers. The Cardy cover on issue 9 is a better cover composition - but here, old IW looks like a swordsman. Sure he's startled and his weight is back on his heels, but he's dropped his hips and his sword is more or less pointed at his adversary. It being a Kaluta - everyone is better drafted overall and has more detail to their characters. I just love how wild-eyed the bad guy is too. You don't have to ask questions when looking at this cover. That man is crazed and probably a little pissed.
Overall - yeah, I'd blow 20 cents on this off the spinner rack as well.
