Set Description:
There are so few of these out there in graded condition worth owning due to many of them having dark to black covers, but they really are cool!
Being larger and more cumbersome than regular comics also seems to make these harder to find in gradable condition. At one point in my life, I owned all of these, though not in the kind of condition I will require of myself to get them when it comes to CGC copies.
I will be hard pressed to settle for 9.6 copies, but if no 9.8's exist or if they are extremely cheap, I may do so. I will however strive for all 9.8's with this set.
This set also contains the origin & 1st appearance of one team of mutants that you may have heard of. (wink) Check out #4!

Ok, I know this isn't a 9.8 copy, or even a 9.6 copy. But that doesn't matter to me. This is the copy that Tnerb gave to me in Baltimore at the ComicCon! He wanted to help me with my MGN set and I can't thank him enough!
I had Jim Starlin sign it while we were there and now it is a permanent part of my collection. I will still look at getting a 9.8 copy eventually, but this one will always be more sentimental to me.
Thanks, big brother!!!!

Story Title: RENEWAL
SUMMARY:
In Scotland, Moira MacTaggert meets a wolf that transforms into Rahne Sinclair (Wolfsbane) on the run from a mob. In Brazil, Roberto Da Costa (Sunspot) changes into an extremely strong (& black) mutant form for the 1st time at a soccer match. In Kentucky, Sam Guthrie (Cannonball) takes off & shoots forward at extreme velocity when he blasts out of a mine as it caves in. In Colorado, Danielle Moonstar (Psyche) is told by her grandfather to go get training from Charles Xavier (Professor X). Angrily, she reveals her ability to take someone's greatest fears & project them visually as spirit forms.
Donald Pierce witnesses these events & decides to kill them all out of hatred & a desire to take over the Hellfire Club from Sebastian Shaw. He kills Dani's grandfather. She vows vengeance.
At the School for Gifted Youngsters, Rahne watches Professor X examine Xi'an Coy Mahn (Karma). When Shan shows how she can possess people by taking over Moira, Rahne freaks & partially transforms. The Professor cools things down. Shan tells some of her past & of her untrustworthy uncle, Nguyen Ngoc Coy.
The X-men are supposedly dead at the hands of the Brood. Charles has become leery of teaching more students just to see them die as well. Moira speaks with him & he agrees to help train the youths. Professor X then receives a message that Dani's grandfather wants him to train her as well.
Charles, Shan & Rahne arrive in Colorado to find that Dani's grandfather is dead. They're attacked by both Dani & by 3 of Pierce's goons. Dani soon realizes her mistake & the assassins are defeated. Charles finds out about Pierce through mental interrogation & Dani joins the team to get revenge on Pierce.
In Brazil, Moira, Shan & Dani are arrested by the Police, who think they abducted Roberto's girlfriend, Juliana & tried to abduct Roberto. Shan & Dani escape but Moira is taken into custody. Later, Shan & Dani follow Roberto when he goes after Juliana. The 3 of them battle with 4 of Pierce's goons & beat them, but not before one of them kills Juliana. Roberto joins up for revenge against Pierce.
In Kentucky, Charles & Rahne look for Sam, who instead finds them by blasting into their jeep. Rahne goes wolfie & hides while Sam pulls an unconscious Charles from the jeep. Pierce has hired Sam to help him. Sam doesn't like it, but needs money for his family. Wolfsbane follows Sam & Pierce's men to their compound. She discovers that Pierce has nullified Charles' mental powers with a machine that is both drawing information from his brain and slowly killing him.
Roberto, Shan & Dani arrive to help & Sam discovers them. Psyche scares him off with a spirit form. The group breaks in. Wolfsbane is severely injured by Pierce. Psyche is KO'd when Pierce throws Dani's psionic attack back at her. He's part bionic!
Sunspot bursts in & then gets blasted by Cannonball, causing him to turn back to normal. Karma tries to possess Pierce, but only gets zapped. When Pierce tells Cannonball to kill all the kids, Sam refuses & Pierce points a gun at him.
While the others were distracting Pierce, Professor X gets the injured Wolfsbane to turn the machine off. Professor X then enters a mental power struggle with Pierce & takes control of him.
Karma takes control of Pierce from Charles & they hand him over to the Hellfire Club. As the group leaves, Sam asks what he should do now & Roberto tells him to go follow his boss.
Later, back at the school, everyone dons their new uniforms. Sam shows up & Roberto is skeptical about letting him join the group, but Rahne forgives Sam & Roberto agrees.
PERSONAL COMMENTS:
This was my 1st comic book series to collect & read, so it was my introduction to many other Marvel characters & series.
I didn't actually read THIS issue until I had already read the first 4 issues of the regular series.
It was cool to see how the kids found out about their powers. Sam was my favorite character by this point. It was neat to see him go from Pierce's lackey to the hero he would later become.
I had heard mention of Juliana from Bobby in the regular series & here I got to see the events happen that Bobby spoke of.
I thought it was funny how these kids had grouped together because of anger, revenge & even hatred, but were now a team of heroes. Good things CAN come from the worst circumstances.

One of the top two keys in this series!!
Also one of the more popular X-Men stories!
It's the first appearance of William Stryker in X-Men's titles, a continuous enemy of the team in the future.
Story summary:
The novel begins with two young children running away from Purifiers in a school. They are caught, shot dead and left behind tied up with the word muties. Magneto finds them before the sun rises and promess to himself that he will make them pay for that.
At ABC Late News we watch a debate between Professor Xavier and Stryker about the mutant issues, and Stryker manages to convince everybody about his racists thoughts. When Xavier, Ororo and Scott are riding back home after debate, they are attacked by some Purifiers, they are shot and the car is blown away.
The others (Colossus, Kitty, Nightcrawler and Wolverine) susceed in a training session at Danger Room programed by Peter's sister Illyana (who is still with the X-Men after being kidnapped by Arcade at Uncanny X-Men #145). Then they get a call informing that Professor X, Storm and Cyclops are dead. While Kitty and Illyana stay at X-Mansion, the others go to the Central Park investigate the deaths. Wolverine senses that the burned bodies aren't from their friends and then they are attacked by some Purifiers at the street. When they would be defeated, Magneto showed up and help then, arresting the soldiers in a metal cocoon. Magneto and Wolverine torture the soldiers and get information about Stryker cruzade agains mutants. Back at X-Mansion, Kitty and Illyana are also attacked and kidnapped by some Purifiers's soldiers.
Meanwhile, Stryker is torturing Xavier trying to mind control him. Stryker tells us about his past, when he was Sargent of the Rangers, he had a baby mutant (with some kind of monster looks). He decides to kill his wife and the baby. He starts to drink, is expelled from US Army and then gets knowing about Xavier and the mutants. Suddenly he reallizes that the mutants are the evil and he had to destroy them all, in a cruzade in the name of God.
Kitty manages to escape from the trunk she was hidden and calls Nightcrawler. When she was about to get killed Magneto, Colossus and Wolverine show up and rescue her.
Stryker susceeds on mind controlling Xavier and makes him kill Cyclops and Storm. Kitty and Nightcrawler kidnapp Stryker and ask for informations about their friends. Then the X-Men and Magneto rescue Cyclops and Storms bodies, just in time to realize they are alive and Xavier still has got some control on his acts.
At Madison Square Garden, Stryker is making a huge talk about how the mutants are monsters and the humans have to make something about it. Then he uses Cerebro and Xavier to locate and kill all the mutants on Earth. Magneto shows up at the Garden, but Xavier attacks him with a huge mental blast and almost kill him. The X-Men enter from the backstage and defeats the guards. When Stryker reallizes one of his soldiers is a mutant, he push her and got her killed. Some people around starts to doubt about Stryker, but others shout that it's all mutants fault and try to kill Magneto, but are stopped by a couple cops. Cyclops makes a plan to attack Xavier using Nightcrawler and Wolverine and at the end they susceed on knocking Xavier unconscious.
The X-Men show up to the crowd and confront Stryker. Cyclops says that the mutants are humans just like everybody with some special skills, like athlets or doctors or scientists. Stryker points at Nightcrawler and asks if he is also a human king, and Kitty says that he is more human than Stryker, who points a gun on her. When he is about to shoot Kitty, the policeman shoots him.
At the end, at X-Mansion, Magneto ask the X-Men and Xavier to join his cruzade against the humans and their hate, Xavier accepts, but not Cyclops, who still believes on his dream of humans and mutants living together as one unique race. Magneto flies away wishing good luck to them, because if they fails he won't.

I found this beauty raw in a local comic store in Orlando the day before Megacon 2014 started. I went there with my brother, Tnerb. I knew it would get 9.8 as soon as I looked it over and wasn't disappointed!
I never thought I would acquire a 9.8 of this issue, due to its jet black cover.

Key Issue: Dazzler: The Movie.
After teaching an aerobics class, Alison is approached by Eric Beale of Beale Productions, who is interested in connecting her with the "right" people. She declines his offer and begins her regular workout.
During her session, a nervous young man named Freddy tries to befriend her. They are interrupted by the club owner and Eric Beale. Beale informs Alison that he just bought the club and wants to promote her.
She declines and goes out with Freddy, who she encourages to be a confident young man, and they share a brief kiss.
After her date, Alison returns home. The paper is full of anti-mutant headlines, which makes her worry about being outed as a mutant.
Alison gets a call from Storm, who is concerned about her, but Alison insists that she is fine. After the phone call she gets ready for her first L.A. singing gig. Elsewhere, Roman Nikoboh goes about making himself presentable for Dazzler's show.
Attending the show is Eric Beale, who is still trying to woo Dazzler into his employ. When her show is done, Dazzler is bombarded by paparazzi who question her about her involvement with Roman Nikoboh.
Upset over the negative publicity that Nikoboh has made for her, she finds Roman in her apartment waiting for her and he makes another sloppy advance toward her. Fed up, Alison screams at him until he leaves. Left alone, Alison wonders where her career can go now.
The next day, Alison is once more confronted by Roman, who follows her in his sports car, offering her a movie deal. She refuses but he continues to follow sending Alison into a run. When she rounds a corner, she uses her light powers to pop his tires causing him to crash. This doesn't stop Roman who chases after her, but fakes a minor heart attack to get Alison to go to his aid. Finally warming up to Roman, she agrees to go out to dinner with him. Alison then accepts the movie deal and the two begin a relationship.
This gains them a lot of publicity and Alison starts indulging in the life of the rich and famous. She eventually reveals to Roman her mutant nature and Roman is impressed. In fact her revelation only makes their relationship stronger. As the days progress, Roman finds a backer for their movie idea. Eric Beale! Alison agrees but is wary of Beale.
Alison plunges into the excessive life of the rich even further. Days later she looks at herself in the mirror and finds that she is losing her shape. Roman enters with a newspaper and tells her that he has publicly outed her as a mutant, hoping they can garner more publicity.
At first Alison is horrified, but eventually decides to go through with things and make a public demonstration of her mutant powers.
This happens at an airport where Alison displays her powers to a large audience and draws energy from the sound of a jet engine. The audience is horrified by the display and is visibly afraid of Alison's powers; a number of them flee.
Dazzler is upset by the reaction and when they return to their hotel they are confronted by a group of anti-mutant bigots that Dazzler has to fight off.
Dazzler decides to get back into shape, and in spite of the negative press that is generated from the revelation that she is a mutant; the film project goes on with a story that shows mutants in a positive light. Roman begins to worry about their safety but Dazzler, finally embracing her mutant nature is not worried and promises to protect them both.
When they screen the completed film, anti-mutant rioters smash into the studio. Dazzler once again uses her light powers to get them out of their jam.
The next day, she is called by Roman who tells her to go to the Beale Production Company before strangely hanging up the phone. Arriving there she is told that Roman had left and that Eric Beale wants to meet her. There she is blackmailed by Beale who had "bought" Roman with offering him a new concert tour and demands that she sign a new contract with him, where he owns her lock, stock and barrel, or face the destruction of her career.
Alison does not break and refuses to sign the contract. She then uses her light powers to destroy both hers and Roman's contracts and supposedly the only print of the film and storms out of the studio.
Outside she is met by Roman, who had returned to try to terminate his contract. Alison tells him what she had done. Alison and Roman part amicably, and she vows that he will see her again and walks away once more proud of who she is.
This story is continued in Dazzler #35....

The World Trade Center twin towers being destroyed? Talk about your Prophetic Imagery!
Produced: 1985
David Michelinie story
Marc Silvestri & Geof Isherwood art
Revenge of the Living Monolith.
Spider-Man, Fantastic Four & Avengers appearance.
Johnny drags in Fayah Sahid, former disciple of Ahmet ‘The Living Pharaoh” Abdol. Soon four hovercraft teleport Reed, Sue & Johnny away, leaving Fayah triumphant and seeking egress through a window.
The infiltrator soon learns the FFHQ windows are steel-tough Lexan, and that the She-Hulk is preparing to ‘pluck her limbs off like daisy petals’. Via remote, Salome Abdol (for Fayah is secretly the Living Pharaoh's beloved daughter), is turned to ash.
She-Hulk calls in Cap, the lone Avenger on duty while the rest of the team is off visiting WCA. Cap goes to find a science expert and finds Spider-Man outside the Daily Bugle.
Spidey quickly uses Reed’s lab to reverse-engineer the teleportation gizmo Fayah used. Just as She-Hulk is about to test the device and follow the Four, an alert comes in.
The Living Monolith has landed at LaGuardia and growing ever larger, heading for Manhattan and destroying everything he sees. From the Fantasticar Jen, Cap, & Spidey attack the Monolith. As Cap talks Abdol down, the army moves in for the attack. Jets occupy Abdol while Cap and Jen use damaged Con Ed cable to electrocute the behemoth.
Jen jokes aloud that she hopes the lunatic doesn’t spatter when he fries. Cap doesn’t think possibly killing a man is cause for levity. Jen quietly says she’s sorry. She jolts the giant, who collapses in Central Park, still growing out of control.
Spidey brings back the FF, the Avengers arrive and Thor tries and fails to fling Abdol into space with his hammer. Abdol’ s followers attack, so super teams and New Yorkers alike battle the invaders. Abdol is moved when he sees a New York man die by laser for a young girl, and voluntarily leaps into space with Mjolnir’s help. His mad followers pursue, probably to their deaths. Superheroes move to help a ravaged city, and Abdol, ever growing, sprouts vegetation around a distant star and becomes a living planet.
