"Knightfall (Part VII) - Strange Bedfellows" Batman allows Firefly to escape in order to save both their lives, then crashes out back at Wayne Manor. That evening, Gotham's cops having been sent off on a wild goose chase by Joker and Scarecrow, he attends a charity gala which is gatecrashed by Poison Ivy. He is able to bring an end to Ivy's activities, but the Gotham SWAT team is caught in an explosion elsewhere, and Bane is still out there, watching and waiting.

"Knightfall (Part IX) - Die Laughing" The Joker and Scarecrow take Mayor Krol to the Gotham River Tunnel, and once inside cause chaos and carnage in order to lure Batman to their location. When doused with Scarecrow's gas, Batman sees visions of Jason Todd's death and is roused to anger rather than fear. The villains cause the tunnel to collapse, forcing Batman to let them escape while he tries to save the mayor from a watery death.

Knightfall part 15 Bruce Wayne is awake, but seriousl injured. Alfred knows they must bring in a doctor, so he and Robin concoct a story about a car crash and call in Shondra Kinsolving Bane, meanwhile, is taking over Gotham's underworld, even recruiting Catwoman to work with him. The streets of Gotham are in chaos and the Batman is sorely needed, so Bruce asks Jean-Paul Valley to take over his mantle for a time.
