Story Title: When Titans Clash! Artist: Werner Roth Synopsis: While the other X-Men are ice-skating on a frozen pond, Scott wanders off into the woods where he tries once more to control his optic blast without wearing glasses; but it’s no use. Giving in to despair, he fires some random beams at full force, accidentally causing a rockslide. Within a hidden base inside the mountains, the noise alerts the Super-Adaptoid to the outside world again and he remembers his task of creating an army of beings like him to take over the world. By the time he makes it outside, all, save Iceman, have returned to the school for some scheduled training sessions. The Adaptoid observes the mutant’s performance, and secretly follows him to Xavier’s to find more super-power subjects for his makeshift army. Meanwhile, at the school, the Mimic again annoys everyone with his attitude and a battle erupts between him and the other students. Xavier finally has enough of it and orders him to leave the school before shutting himself off in his lab to continue his study of the threat of Factor Three. Later, the unsuspecting X-Men are attacked and stunned by the Adaptoid, right as the Mimic returns to the school to get revenge on them. Learning of the Adaptoid’s many powers and his ability to turn others into his equal, the Mimic volunteers for becoming a second Adaptoid. Though helpless, Cyclops reasons with his former teammate not to throw away his humanity and become a robotic servant, and Calvin realizes he is right. Before the transformation is complete, he opposes the Adaptoid. With him possessing all of the X-Men’s powers and the Adaptoid all those of the Avengers, it’s almost a draw, though ultimately Mimic tires while the Adaptoid does not. However, when the Adaptoid suddenly decides to duplicate the Mimic’s powers, an energy feedback occurs, caused by both of them having similar artificially enhanced powers. Actually, it was the Mimic who telepathically planted the suggestion in the Adaptoid’s mind, predicting this effect. Both lose all of their copied and absorbed powers and plummet to Earth. Calvin is safely caught by the Angel and the X-Men make up with him. Though his powers are now gone, Calvin Rankin has become a better person.

Info: Reprint of X-Men #32 Title: Beware the Juggernaut, my son! By: Roy Thomas Artist: Gil Kane Synopsis #32: It’s Bobby Drake’s birthday and the X-Men are having a good time at the Coffee A Go-Go, along with Zelda, Vera and Candy, until the party is crashed by a gang of bikers. Their leader, Rocky Rhodes, is angry about Zelda having refused to date him. Not able to use their powers openly, the five mutants still find a way to subdue the bikers and continue their evening. Scott and Jean finally open up a little to each other, Scott revealing his fears of accidentally hurting a loved one and Jean offering her support in any way. Warren really feels for Candy and reminds himself to take it slow, as he isn’t fully over Jean yet. Back at the mansion, Xavier is attempting to cure his stepbrother, Cain Marko, by leeching off his Juggernaut powers with a special machine using his own mental energies to empower it. The experiment fails, the machine exploding, and, as Xavier is rendered comatose, the Juggernaut finds himself alive and well, plus the Professor’s mental power transferred to him. Sensing the X-Men gone, he prepares a set of traps for them. Later that night, when they return, they find the mansion dark and Xavier not responding. They search the house, only to eventually end up in the basement, where the Juggernaut attacks them. One by one, the X-Men are knocked out, until he stands triumphant. Just as he intends to wreck the house to bury the X-Men alive, he finds himself mentally contacted by Factor Three, who reveal the machine malfunctioning being their doing and inviting to join them. Realizing the enormous power this organization must have, the Juggernaut agrees and departs for the next airport. As the X-Men come around, they take the comatose Xavier to the mansion’s infirmary, only to learn that there is nothing they can do for him. Instead, they plan to pursue the Juggernaut.

Info: Reprint of the first story of X-Men #41 Story Title: Now Strikes ... the Sub-Human ! By: Roy Thomas Artist: Don Heck Synopsis: There once was a hostile race of subterrans living in a vast underground empire, with huge cities and millions of people. Eventually, after they had defeated all their subterran foes, their king decided to conquer the surface world. However, at precisely that moment, a nuclear test blast destroyed the center of the subterran empire. Those who didn’t die in the initial explosion died of radiation poisoning in the weeks that followed. Only Gor-Tok, the prince of this once mighty race, survived, though the radiation changed him, bestowing him with great physical power. All alone, he found himself a new home in the caverns underneath New York City. When Dr. Hunt, a scientist at Archer’s College, developed a device to create minor earthquakes, Gor-Tok is not only reminded about the way his people died, but also decided to exact revenge by stealing the device and using it to destroy the planet so that humanity becomes extinct as well. Hank McCoy and Bobby Drake are among the first to feel Gor-Tok’s wrath, as he attacks a subway train that the two were riding in with their girlfriends. After a brief battle with the two X-Men, who call him “grotesque” because of his physical appearance, he decides to call himself Grotesk from now on. Back at the mansion, Hank and Bobby barely have the chance to alert the others to the incident, as Xavier is rather busy lecturing and reprimanding the team for every minor mistake. He then sends the male X-Men to check out Grotesk’s headquarter, but orders Jean to stay behind, wanting to continue his experiments with her. Finding Grotesk’s base empty, and unable to contact Xavier, Cyclops sends Angel and Iceman back to the mansion. Meanwhile, Grotesk has made his way to Archer College, where he kidnaps a lab assistant when he can’t find the weapon. Taking him back to his lair, Grotesk finds Cyclops and the Beast waiting for him. When Angel and Iceman arrive back at the mansion, they find Xavier gone and Jean acting rather evasive and distracted, as if she no longer cared about the X-Men.

Info: Reprint of the first story of X-Men #43 Story Title: The Torch is Passed...! By: Roy Thomas Artist: George Tuska Synopsis: The X-Men are burying their dead mentor, Professor Xavier, but an unexpected guest arrives at the funeral - Quicksilver. They try to talk to him, but Quicksilver believes they are trying to attack him and runs away. Back at their mansion, the team views a film Xavier recorded shortly before his death. In the recorded message, the professor explains that he recently pushed the team so hard because he knew he hadn’t much time left as he was suffering from an incurable, fatal illness. Also, he reveals that he bestowed Marvel Girl with some of his telepathic might in their last training sessions. Finally, after alerting them that Magneto might have returned to Earth, he asks his students to carry on his dream for him. Indeed, the master of magnetism is back, having built himself a fortress on a small island in the Atlantic, using equipment stolen from cargo ships passing the area. Already he has reassembled most of his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, including Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch. As Quicksilver returns, he first checks on Wanda, finding that she is still powerless. Actually, Magneto’s promise to create a device to restore her abilities is their only reason for the siblings to stay. Little do they know that the machine Magneto’s is building has a different purpose - with it, he could enslave the minds of all of humanity. After reprimanding Quicksilver for visiting the funeral and punishing the every loyal Toad for annoying him time and again, Magneto proceeds with his plans. He only needs one more component for his mind-control machine, a new supercomputer, which is carried on a ship that passes the island a few days later. However, because of Cyclops anticipating Magneto's next move, the five X-Men are also aboard the ship and attack the island, when Magneto hijacks it. They easily enter the fortress but things don't go very well from there. On unfamiliar grounds, they have to deal with Magneto and several traps at the same time, and are all rendered unconscious.

By: Chris Claremont Artists: John Bryne, Terry Austin & Dave Cockrum Synopsis: Having lost Wolverine and Nightcrawler in Calgary, the remaining X-Men track them down to the stampede ground. Storm, Cyclops and Colossus break in and discover their comrades tied up in the center of the field. They approach them and are suddenly confronted by Alpha Flight. This is the catalyst for battle and, surprisingly, Wolverine and Nightcrawler join the fray, having being playing possum the whole time. Shaman has created a force field around the grounds and now creates some mystical creatures, which join the fight. Cyclops picks them off but the distraction allows Northstar to land a solid punch on the back of his head. Nightcrawler tussles with Aurora, while Colossus is matched with Sasquatch. Snowbird takes to the skies to keep Storm out of the fight, morphing into the form of a giant Arctic owl. The blizzard created by Shaman grows and grows and Ororo knows that she must act. She gets rid of Snowbird and heads above the clouds. She uses all her energies and skills to concentrate on the patterns created by the weather, and, slowly but surely, disperses the storm. Returning to the stampede grounds, she is attacked by Northstar but he is quickly dealt with by Scott. After tussling with Vindicator, Wolverine decides to hand himself over to bring matters to a close and Vindicator acknowledges his wise choice. He is placed in a truck, which has a supposedly escape-proof cage inside it. The X-Men are escorted out of Canadian air space but soon agree to return and recover their friend. Fortunately, they find that he has already managed to escape and is on board their flight, chatting up the pilot, Annie. Overjoyed and relieved, the X-Men are finally on their way home.
