Well, it had been awhile since I had gotten a new Thrilling Comics when I saw this one listed on eBay. It was raw and it looked realy nice but for the corner missing on the lower right. I went to the chat boards and asked what everyone thought this would grade at with the corner missing.
Most seemed to think around 4.0 to 5.0 with some saying it would get the green or purple label. It came back a 5.0.
Nothing warms my heart more than seeing young teens with loaded guns, it's like napalm in the moring. There are just to many thing on this cover to love. How about the youth on the back of the tank tossing the gernades, he's got a sack of then like he's delivering the newspapers. How about the front kid with the string around his neck that's tied to his gun, never seen that before. How about the kid on the right, ooooh, what a frightening sword. And, they all look just so happy. You just have to love Alex Schomburg. Don't forget to check out the back cover, where else are you going to see a "Krak-A-Jap" machine gum. Have you ever seem such a dark dust shadow?

Not much to say about this cover, just another classic by Schomburg. I like that the colors are all earth tones and yet everything still stands out. The back cover is great in that it ties into the war effort going on during the 40's. The discoloration on the back cover, as seen in the rev. scan, I'm sure lead to a lower grade. Luckily none of it is on the front. There is a small pencil code "C 10-15" just under the 10¢ logo. as of 4/30/12 there are 8 copies graded with the top being a CGC-9.4.

Classic war cover with Doc taking on at least 7 Jap war planes.I always love to see it when the artists would draw part of an object into the title logo area, as the top airplane in this picture, and the rest behind the title area. Gives it somewhat of a 3-D look. I love how the back cover mentions Pearl Harbor. Those ad people will do anything to sell anything. Very slightly bumped corners, very thin dust shadow on one edge, and small hanging chad on top left corner. One of the nicer spines for a comic this old with just the tinyest little tear by the staple. Clean, perfectly centered, and a spine roll that can only be seen at the correct and angle and light. Oh man, I'm makeing it sound worse than it is. It's really a great looking comic and could have even gone a grade higher. A total of 11 copies graded with the top being a 9.4 and low being a 3.0 and this being the second highest.

Oh my, what's not to like about this cover? We have 3 German officers, one grunt, and all 5 of the Commando Cubs. The cool thing about this is that all of that action takes place on a sub and Schomburg fits it in on 2/3's of the cover. This copy seems to be a bit dirty, but hey, you'd be dirty to if you were 66 years old. There are 16 copies graded with the top one being a 9.4 and the low a 3.5.

ComicLink Comments:
This is 1 of only 2 examples of this 1944 issue in grade and just 2 have ever been certified higher by CGC. The WWII-themed cover of this issue is the work of Alex Schomburg, one of the most respected and collected artists of the Golden Age.

Hitler cover. Not much more to say about it. Any Hitler cover on a comic from the time he was still in power is a classic. Lower grade on this one but it's all I could afford on this much sought after comic.

Classic Schomburg cover with 9 people, 10 if you count the picture of Hitler, 5 guns, and one bucket of paint. Man, those Nazi's have faces only Hitler could love. And speaking of faces, doesn't the Cub in the middle look just a bit to happy considering whats going on around him. Great use of color on this cover. The green just pops off the cover and the red wall highlights the Hitler picture just right. Cover stapled on just a bit crooked.

Classic Schomburg war cover. Once again Schomburg captures a single scene like no one else. This book has the look of a much higher grade, say a 9.0 or a 9.2, but there a few tiny problems on the cover. Upper left corner bump, thumb tear, 1/4", and tiny crease top center edge, two creases from middle right to lower center that end in 1/4" tears but no color break to them. A $3 pencil price on the back cover and a thumb tear agian on the top edge back cover. Wait a second, that is just on the covers, I wonder what is on the inside. Maybe a 5.0 is not so bad for this comic. I'm not kidding you, this comic looks like a 9.2 from 3 feet away.

What can be said about covers like this. The whole cover is a masterwork.I guess I'd have to pick the dynamite scene in the middle as the best part. It's like, hold off on the plunger till I put these down and we all get out of here.Very well centered and would have gone higher but for the miss printed spot on the plunger boys helmet. The blank spot is not worn but a area that did not receive the ink when it was printed. Looks like there may have been something like a grain of sand that won’t allow the ink to reach the area.

Here we have one of those Schomburg covers with all the detail that he's known for. Five people, gun shots, choke holds, spear stabing, and the worlds largest diamond. What more could you ask for? I love the little "Photo-Alarm" hidden away in the lower corner of this cover. Schomburg does some great art work on Doc Strange here as he looks young and buffed and more lifelike than some other covers. Perfectly centered cover with somewhat of a dirty spine (dust shadow?) as can be found on some the Crippen pedigree books.

Oh my, how could anything more be put into this front cover. There are 8 people, 5guns, a desk, 3 pieces of radio equipment, a sword, a hatchet, and Schomburg still finds room to put his name. A real masterpiece.

Great cover showing how we should treat our returning Vets. Have a band playing for them, a fly by. Give them a loan, a job, and a thankyou handshake. Love how Schomburg put the wife, kids, and parents in the background. Best part of the cover is the Nazi helmet the G.I. brings home. This copy is very well centered and would get the higher grade if not for a somewhat dirty spine. This is a Crippen D-copy pedigree comic without any cover markings.
Thrilling Comics #50 Davis Crippen ("D" Copy) pedigree (Better Publications, 1945) CGC FN+ 6.5 Cream to off-white pages. Alex Schomburg cover. Bob Oksner, August Froehlich, and Maurice Gutwirth art. Overstreet 2006 FN 6.0 value = $117; VF 8.0 value = $225. CGC census 1/07: 1 in 6.5, 2 higher. From the Crippen Collection.

A big ape, a classy dame, a jungle scene, a red airplane, wait, what, a red airplane? Oh well, it’s Doc Strange to the rescue. Another great Schomburg cover. Do we ever see Doc wear something different than those blue pants and red T-shirt? Yeah we do. The first several issues have Doc shirtless or with other than red shirts. He wears the first red T-shirt on issue #8, but with purple pants, and then with issue #9 he wears the red and blue outfit till the end of his covers on issue #59.

Another Schomburg cover with typical rescue scene. I can’t look at this cover without being drawn to the back of that villains head. It’s either to small or to bald or to misshapen, or looking to much like someone’s rear end. Okay, what about that grease pencil letter by Doc’s head? Is it a P, a R, a L? I’ve tried to link it to some famous pedigree but can’t seem to find anything similar. Any ideas?
