Three weeks after getting the guns, Rick and Shane are teaching everyone how to shoot. Everyone is impressed with Andrea's skill. Both Rick and Shane agree that she is possibly the best shot of the group. Rick also insists on teaching Carl, despite Lori's disapproval. After Rick announces to everyone that Carl will be carrying his own gun, Rick and Lori have a fight.
When everyone makes it back to camp, Donna shows her disgust of Andrea and Amy sleeping in the camper with Dale. A couple of days later, Rick, Shane, and Dale go to get firewood and they talk about the girls living with Dale. Rick says how he sees nothing wrong with it and Dale says that nothing is going on. He says that the two simply keep things clean, and give him some comfort since his wife passed away a couple months ago. After Rick mentions how cold it's getting, Shane yells at him, saying how tired he is of hearing Rick talk. Rick is left shocked, and Shane leaves with firewood. Dale says to Rick that Shane has issues.
That night they talk about what they did before the outbreak. Dale mentions he was a salesman, retired, and on the road with his wife. After the outbreak, she died, and afterward he found Amy and Andrea. Andrea mentions she was a clerk at a law firm and was driving Amy back to college. Glenn was a pizza delivery boy. Allen says that he was a shoes salesman supporting the rest of the family. Jim simply says he was a mechanic. Rick and Shane recount their stories, and Carol mentions that she used to sell tupperware and her husband was a cars salesman, who had killed himself after watching his parents die in front of him. Amy goes to the RV to use the bathroom when she is attacked by a roamer, which bites her in the neck. The survivors are suddenly invaded by zombies. Lori is nearly killed by a roamer, but is saved when Carl shoots it. Jim launches into a rage and attacks a roamer, while yelling that it killed his family. When all the zombies are killed, Andrea shoots Amy in the head in order to prevent reanimation. It is then revealed that Jim received a bite to his arm, while killing the zombie.

A flashback is shown with Lori, waiting outside the city where her parents are located. She is confronted by Shane, and she confides in him about how horrible she feels leaving Rick in the city. After a short conversation, Lori and Shane kiss, and Lori adds that she "needs him." The two of them end up having sex.
Back to the present, the survivors are burying Shane. The group then departs their camp using the RV. They continue on their journey until they need to clear some cars that are blocking the road. While clearing the cars the group meets Tyreese, his daughter Julie and her boyfriend Chris. Tyreese explains to Rick that a man in a store attempted to rape Julie. However, he was able to kill the man before he could rape her.
Rick doesn't judge Tyreese, and says anyone would have done that. Tyreese says he's beating himself up because he doesn't feel any guilt from it and the apocalypse has changed him. Suddenly, the two discover roamers. Tyreese marvels about the name 'roamer', and Rick explains they are zombies who just roam around, and killed Amy and Jim.
Tyreese and Rick take their primary weapons; hammer and axe. They trick the zombies, Rick takes one of them and Tyreese takes the other one. They beat them to death and say the situation is under control. They return to the RV and Rick tells Dale to drive around so they could look for some empty houses to stay in. Suddenly, they discover a crashed car in the road. Rick thinks they have to start moving it aside if they want to get to safety before dark.
Rick reveals he's glad they bumped into Tyreese and his family. They came in handy, especially because Tyreese is strong. Carol and Tyreese are having some eye contact.
At night, Tyreese says the people have a lot of food. Rick says he has to thank Glenn about it. He says he was just doing his part, but, Carol thinks they'd be much worse off without him. Tyreese agrees, he and Carol hold hands, and Glenn seems awful. Rick thinks it's honorable that Glenn risks his life for others and supplies.
While Rick is talking about finding Lori and Carl, Lori walks away. Rick catches her and asks what is wrong. Lori reveals that she is pregnant.

While Rick is extinguishing the fires, Dale comes to talk to him. Dale confides to Rick that he thinks the baby might be Lori and Shane's. Rick asks Dale to drop it. Dale reminds Rick that he has been with them little over a month, and Rick yells at him not to say another word. Rick says they have had sex once and he can't dwell on it or his mind will go crazy. Rick wakes up in the new place the group has found, Wiltshire Estates. Rick calls for Lori, and she tells him to be quiet so Carl won't wake up. Lori tells Rick she's been up a while. Rick says that the deaths of Jim, Amy, and Shane must be hard on Carl. Lori exclaims she is sad that her baby will not know anything about the world they used to know, and Carl won't get a driver license or take a girl to a movie. Lori asks Rick if they'll ever be able to fix everything, but Rick doesn't know. Meanwhile, Carol and Tyreese get closer.
Donna is thinking about Dale and Andrea. She thinks they both have something in common, that they both lost someone important. It gives Donna hope when she sees them together. Lastly, she says they are really lucky and thinks she could be happy in their new home. Allen asks if she wants to have sex, and Billy and Ben look over at them and Billy asks, "What's a 'Segs'?". Donna thinks that answered his question.
In the morning, Rick tells everyone to search the houses, and clear any possible zombies and search for food and supplies. They could also find more people hiding in the houses. Julie and Chris are staying in another house, and Rick thinks Andrea could stay with the children. Rick gathers up the teams and goes to get Tyreese a gun from the RV.
Rick goes to get Tyreese a gun from the RV, and Allen hopes the houses are empty. Tyreese goes with Carol to see the yard of the house. Donna says Allen worries too much. Suddenly, Rick discovers a fallen sign at the entrance, which reads "ALL DEAD DO NOT ENTER". He starts to run back into Wiltshire.
Meanwhile, Donna gets bitten near her eye by a roamer. Everyone returns and Rick tells everyone not to use their guns. Allen tells the roamers to go away, but Tyreese captures him and tells him there's nothing he can do. Allen starts to yell, and shoots with his pistol. The shots get the zombies attention, as Donna is devoured.
Rick tells everyone to leave, and goes to get Allen. Rick tells him to leave the place, but Allen wants to stay. Rick tells him to think about his children, and if they don't leave now, they're both dead. Allen comes into his sense and is ready to leave. Tyreese goes to get Dale and the others, and tells them to get their children. Tyreese runs upstairs to get Julie and Chris, and catches them trying to have sex.
Rick takes Allen into the RV, and tells Lori that Donna is dead. Rick goes after Tyreese, and is able to get to the house. Tyreese tells Chris and Julie to get their clothes on. Rick gets to the house and tells him they can't get out downstairs. Tyreese yells they have to go through the window. They discover the ground floor is full of zombies, and Dale drives his RV through the zombie horde. Rick and the rest jump onto the RV's roof. The twins ask about the location of their mother. Allen starts to cry and tells them she's dead. The party stops for gas and Rick says he doesn't know what to say. Allen says he doesn't have to say anything.
Rick is worried about Allen, and Dale says they can't bring Donna back, and tells him to let Allen mourn. Dale knows how losing a wife feels like. Lori says they're almost out of everything. Carol wishes they could have picked up some food from Wiltshire. Rick, Glenn, and Tyreese are checking a food shop, but they find nothing. Rick thinks they have to start hunting.
Rick tells the others that they have to get back before dark, even if they don't find food. If they hear a shot, Tyreese, Rick, and Carl will come back as fast as they can. Carl wants to come too, and Rick tells him not to shoot unless he says so. Rick tells Lori she should keep an eye on Allen, he's worried he will hurt himself, or worse.
Tyreese asks what Rick thinks about Allen and Rick tells him what Allen was doing in Wiltshire, and doesn't know what's going through his mind. Rick doesn't know what to think after what happened to Shane. Tyreese tells him he heard the story from Carol. Rick overhears a voice and thinks somebody is after them, and just then, a bullet goes through Carl.
Carl falls down and Tyreese asks who's shooting at them. A man, named Otis, tells them it was an accident. Rick becomes very angry as Otis apologizes profusely. Rick points his gun into his cheek and says he's going to kill him.

While clearing the prison, Rick and Tyreese encounter a closed door to the cafeteria. When they burst in they find four other survivors, Dexter, Andrew, Axel, and Thomas Richards.
They bring the rest of the group inside the cafeteria where they eat for the first time in quite a while. But, unlike Rick's initial thought, the new survivors reveal they are inmates not guards. Dexter killed his ex-wife and her boyfriend; Andrew was a drug dealer; Axel committed armed robbery; Thomas Richards says "Tax Evasion". It is also implied that Dexter and Andrew are in a homosexual relationship. Then Dexter shows them around the prison, and they reveal they had to use the freezer as bathroom after the buckets were all filled with excrement.
The group opens the door to the gym. They see its full of zombies, but, they decide to "deal with it later". Then they go to the laundry room and find some vehicles in the garage. Rick proposes bringing the Greene Family to live with them. Rick and Dale head to the farm in the RV. Rick learns that the zombie attacks have increased since they left. Rick makes his offer to bring to the prison, and Hershel agrees to this. The group leaves for the prison, except for Otis who stayed behind to watch over the farm.
The following night, Chris and Julie are having sex, then commit to shooting each other in a suicide pact. After hearing a gunshot, Rick runs to find Tyreese hugging his dead daughter's body and Chris exclaiming that they were supposed to kill each other at the same time. Julie then suddenly turns and attempts to bite Tyreese.

Glenn and Tyreese, who were watching Thomas, decide to lock him in the freezer that the inmates had previously been using as a bathroom, in order to "Put the waste with the waste" as Glenn explains. Rick reminds them that the freezer is air tight so he will suffocate, and they remove him to be taken to the cell block.
Later, Patricia frees Thomas, believing him to be just a sick man that needs help, but he then attempts to kill her. During the brief struggle, Patricia manages to call for help, and scratches Thomas' face, freeing herself. Unseen, Glenn and Maggie approach from behind, and Maggie unloads six rounds from her pistol into Thomas's back. Maggie confesses to the gathered survivors, "Now I feel a little better", and the survivors proceed to the main gate of the prison.
Hershel requests that Thomas' body be thrown to the zombies to be torn apart and eaten. The issue closes with Rick being disarmed and threatened by Dexter, Andrew, and Patricia at gunpoint. Dexter then tells Rick's group of survivors to leave the prison.

Then Andrea holds a meeting for the survivors in the cafeteria, giving them all brand new orange jumpsuits she found in the prison. She promises to sew some new clothes for everyone for the future seasons, possibly even making shorts for everyone in the summer. No one is particularly excited for this news, but they all take and wear the jumpsuits.
After the meeting, Otis notices Patricia alone. They have a short conversation and Otis horribly tells Patricia that he is not talking to her, like the rest of the group. As he says she sided against them with a couple of niggers (Dexter and Andrew). Otis then leaves her alone again, before Patricia burst into tears.

Rick takes Tyreese aside and accuses him of being responsible for Carol's attempted suicide. Tyreese punches Rick and tells him not to say that again. Instead of backing down, Rick says Tyreese practically slit Carol's wrists for her. Tyreese kicks Rick but then breaks down in tears, denying any culpability in Carol's mishap and apologizing for losing his temper with Rick.
Rick says Tyreese will bear the blame if Carol dies and warns Tyreese not to punch him again. Tyreese accuses Rick of having gone insane, but Rick responds by recalling how brutally Tyreese murdered Chris. Tyreese claims he killed Chris not out of rage but in cold blood, simply finishing the job Chris had started in the botched suicide pact with Julie, but admits he let Chris reanimate so he could continue punishing the corpse.
Glenn and Maggie appear on the scene as Rick asks if Tyreese feels ashamed to be a murderer. Glenn steps in and tries to calm the pair. Tyreese says he feels no shame over killing Chris for killing his daughter and counters by recalling Rick's own murder of Dexter, which Rick defends as justifiable because Dexter intended to kick their group out of The Prison.
Tyreese then brings up Rick's mutilation of Allen. Pushing Tyreese against the balcony railing, Rick says he only mutilated Allen to save his life. Tyreese punches Rick again and asks if Rick means to kill him, too. Rick maintains that he is not a killer, but Tyreese tells him he's acting like one.
Suddenly, Rick passes out and tumbles over the railing to the cellblock floor below, and Tyreese sustains a foot injury jumping down after him. Glenn and Maggie tell the men to stop fighting, but Tyreese already has and just wants to see if Rick is okay. Rick wakes up and kicks Tyreese in the face, yelling that Tyreese called him a killer but then turned around and tried to kill him by pushing him over the rail. Tyreese explains that Rick simply blacked out and fell, but Rick refuses to believe him. Rick tells Tyreese to stay down because they're not done yet.
Lori comes running down the stairs, and Glenn fills her in on what has transpired. Lori asks Rick if he thinks he has suffered any broken bones, and he says it feels like it. Lori tries to help him to his feet, but Rick falls right back down. Sitting, Rick declares to Tyreese that everything he does is intended for the good of the group.
Andrea comes downstairs and tells them Allen has died. Rick says he'll handle the task of shooting Allen to keep the dead man from returning as a walker and sarcastically asks if Tyreese thinks he'd enjoy that too much. Rick limps off alone to dispatch Allen, and the others hear the subsequent gunshot.
Hershel and Michonne come to Allen's room to tell Rick that Carol will recover from her self-inflicted injuries. Before Rick can respond to the good news, however, he abruptly passes out again.

Rick and Dale continue to search the rest of the prison before they open it for occupation. During a conversation about how the generator will make their lives easier, Rick mentions that he hadn't noticed how long it has been since he's heard any music. Rick tells Dale about meeting Morgan and "his son", (Rick can't remember Duane's name) and that he believes Morgan made the smart decision by staying put and fending for themselves.
As Rick and Dale are finishing their patrol of the cell block, they run into Tyreese. While the three men are talking, Glenn and Maggie emerge carrying police riot gear and inform the group that they found a weapons locker and then take Rick, Dale, and Tyreese to its location.
Meanwhile, Lori and Carol are carrying books from the library when Carol expresses worry about Lori. Lori says that Carol is the one everyone should be worried about because of the recent suicide attempt. Carol says that the thing that has her worried most is that Sophia acts as if nothing ever happened.
The group decides to siphon gas for the generator and Glenn devises a plan for the others to lure the undead away from the gate while he and Rick run out to siphon gas from the parked cars. Glenn disappears and emerges wearing a full riot suit, and carrying one for Rick, so that they can give them a test-run. While Rick and Glenn are siphoning gas, the issue closes with both men looking towards the sky at a passing helicopter.
