In the year 2000 Marvel comics group made history with the revamping of the timeless classic hero Spider-man. With marvel narrowly escaping bankruptcy in the late 90's Marvel needed to find a way to reclaim the comic throne. And they did just that with the debut of the most popular titles in decades, Ultimate Spider-man! Between Joe Quesada, Mark Bagley, Art Thibert, and super scribe Brian Michael Bendis, Marvel comics has single handedly "risen from the grave" and revitalized an industry that was inches away from oblivion. The Ultimate Spider-man series rivals sales even generated back in the 60's with it's Amazing Spider-man counter-part. Since it's debut USM constantly ranked in Diamond Distributions top best selling comic titles list month after month for over six years. Also marking a first Brian Michael Bendis & Mark Bagely set the benchmark for the most issues by a single creative team at Marvel, previously held by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. And it is that success and dedication by Marvel Comics that makes trying to own a CGC Ultimate Spider-man collection, a basic no-brainer! Ultimate Spider-man has all the elements that make up a great comic book. Hence, the reason for grading and collecting this title! On a final note, trying to find this particular issue in NM/M (9.8) grade is proving to be a real challenge. The key reason is the "card-stock" used for the covers of the first 31 issues of the USM series. Card-stock is a stiffer, slighty thicker card-board material than your standard paper comic cover. Overall the material is pretty sturdy, but in the case of these USM #1 direct editions finding copies with "sharp" corners is proving to be very difficult. I see many copies of USM #1 Direct editions with chipping or flaking at the corners of these books. I find this to be evident especially at the corners adjacent to the spines of the books, which makes finding a NM/M book ungraded a real treasure hunt. If anyone receives a Mint or Gem Mint grade (9.9 or 10) of this issue it will truly be a great find.

This issue may have the smallest print run of the of Ultimate Spider-man bunch from #1 to #14. (even more limited than the white variant.) Dynamic Forces & Marvel comics only printed five thousand(5,000)copies of this variant, and of those, 2000 were signed by Joe Quesada and Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley. Even Art Thibert signed and "resketched" 500 copies. reducing the number of unsigned versions(and the most sought after) to only twenty-five hundred copies. Making this issue even more difficult to obtain, let alone find in high grade condition. Dynamic Forces ships their comics "pre-bagged" with a Dynamic Forces seal. This particular variant issue of USM is just as difficult to find in NM/M (9.8) condition just like the "white" variant. The difference is with this issue the spine and back cover are solid black! Which means just like the white variant, every single flaw can be exposed. And since Dynamic Forces pre-bags most of their comics, that means corner, spine, and cover damage can result during packaging and shipping. I bought this issue ungraded(and a signed one ungraded)around 8 months into the debut of Ultimate Spider-man.(These were printed after the white variant.)I had three to choose from. Two unsigned and one signed. I'm glad I chose correctly! So if you are a USM completist and find this book in ANY condition, buy it quickly! This is not an easy issue to obtain!

In the wake of variant madness many speculate if Ultimate Spider-man variants will hold their value in the years to come. A "variant" cover comic that has a large or standard print run is NOT a true variant comic. USM has a true limited print run for the first seven to eight issues which was excerised by former Marvel President Bill Jemas and C.E.O Joe Quesada in the year 2000 via their now defunct "no reorder" policy. Making the USM white cover and Dynamic Forces covers very difficult to obtain let alone find in high grade condition. That is why these books are highly desired by comic collector completist and is what makes these variant books true gems. I was very blessed to find this variant (ungraded) six months into the debut of Ultimate Spider-man hitting the stands. It was given only to retailers to garner interest in increasing orders for the Ultimate Spider-man title. Soon it became apparent that not many of these "white variants" were in circulation. Which made the price for one skyrocket! This variant is commonly refered to by collectors as "the holy grail of modern comics". And to own one in any condition makes for a nice addition to any comic collection. The fact that this variant has a white cover makes the issue difficult to find at a NM/M (9.8) grade. From corners to cover every potential flaw can be made visible under close scrutiny. I was fortunate to work a deal three months later and I purchased this one 9 months into the Ultimate Spider-man run. And I got it at a great price! I have another in NM- condition (9.2) grade.

One of the most difficult Ultimate Spider-man issues to obtain in NM/M (9.8) condition, USM #3 marks the moment Peter Parker dons his prototype costume. Peter enters a wrestling contest against world wrestling champion "Crusher Hogan" dressed in his red and blues without the webs. After the bout he is announced as "The Spectacular Spider-man".

Key issue. Death of Ultimate Uncle Ben. Bought this issue ungraded at a convention in Atlanta. The condition was incredible and I was able to get it at a good price. Many people have been talking about the limited print run of issue number five and the price for one has steadily risen. But issue number three and four have become true sleepers! According to the CGC census less than five hundred and thirty seven issues of number four have been graded and of those only 144 have been graded at NM/M (9.8). Meaning there are more issues of number 5 graded at 9.8 than there are this issue! There are more issues of number five than there are of number three with only less than 85 issues graded at 9.8!!!!!(not that 198 copies of issue number five graded at 9.8 is alot!) Maybe that is something to think about though?

Bought this issue (ungraded) at the Dragon Con in Atlanta Georgia 2004. I could not believe the condition it was in and I had to snap it up! There was a limited print run on this particular issue because never in the history of recorded monthly comic sales had a number five issue out sold its previous counter-parts. This history resulted in many retailers under-ordering the number five issue. And coupled with Marvels then "no reorder, no-reprint" policy made this issue not readily available. (especially in high grade condition.) So people have rushed to get it graded and cash in. Less than Nine hundred and thirty have been graded by CGC and only 198 have received a NM/M 9.8 grade. In the wake of "Gold Rush number five" fever, poor little issues number three and number four seem to have been left by the way side and are now hard to come by in NM/M 9.8 grade! I wonder once people begin to realize just how limited number three and four are in 9.8 grade will there be another "rush" to get those two issues graded also?

This issue marks the first slight logo change in the USM series. With the word "Ulimate" being highlighted in red. I bought this one through ebay. It was already graded and I was able purchase this copy at a very fair price. There are less than 130 copies graded at NM/M (9.8).

What I love about this cover is the reflection of the sun-lite off of the "camera lens" capturing spidey in action sticking sideways on a New York buiding. Once again a limited number of copies (less than 100) in NM/M (9.8) grade.
