Well....you win some and you lose some. I really did think this book would respond better to a press, but it's never going to be valuable, so it doesn't much matter - it's for my personal enjoyment. And I did get a sweet Joe Jusko signature on a pretty sweet cover. Sonja is featured taking a breather on some rocks. Not overly sexualized and not in a position that she couldn't pop up from and into fighting form in no time - exactly the kind of break I have enjoyed while in my armor. Her sword is notched deeply enough to be visible, which is dangerous - as in, it is in danger of breaking on a bad hit to another weapon or shield, but she's resting the point on a rock, which is far better than resting it on the dirt where rust is your constant enemy. I like that her gaze is direct and unflinching, sort of a "you want a piece of me?" - No, that's okay Sonja, I know I'm not worthy - you're an epic badass. The helm, shield, & axe, as well as the fully rendered background do a nice job of setting the scene.
Overall - I gotta say I love it. Good cover.

I do love Rocafort's work. I had a couple of his Red Hoods signed a few years back at ECCC and he's a very intense individual. I picked up this 9.6 inexpensively as I didn't get a copy of this from my LCS when it released and I thought it would be a nice book to have a copy of in case there's a signature opportunity (hoping it might press). It does appear to have a corner impact - probably from that quality Diamond Distributing shipping - so maybe I can press it out, maybe not.
Rocafort's Sonja looks like a badass - with strong arms and a solid stance for combat. I'm not sure about her being a lefty though.
Overall? Yeah, I dig this book. And with a little luck it'll join my legion of Red Sonja covers signed by the cover artist.

Yeah - I know a modern Red Sonja book that isn't autographed. That's an oddity. So, a little secret about me - since I primarily do portraiture with my own art, when I see a portrait like this one that I find striking I have a hard time not adding it to the collection. While there's a lot going on here, Ward really nailed the image with the green eyes. They stand out from all the hair and the blood and the flushed, I just kicked everyone's ass look on Sonja's face to just pierce with her direct gaze. Just awesome portrait work all around.
No need to say, but yes, I went out of my way to pick this specific cover up, so yes the cover artist did his job.

A virgin variant of a "Heavy Metal" movie poster homage? How exactly is a person supposed to pass up a cover this cool? I mean - Heavy Metal is 100% my teenage years - I read it, and later I watched it - and even later one of my friends cosplayed Taarna at con. You just can't beat that for targeted marketing at me. This is my first time owning any of Pepe's work and I have to say I am super impressed with the draftsmanship - that dragon looks believable, Sonja's pose is right, everything just works for this image. I mean this is pretty damn sweet.

I was immediately struck by how cool Jae Lee's cover was. Not your typical, busty, Red Sonja, but something leaner, more lithe and yet just as deadly. The simplicity of the composition, one of Jae's specialties, really stands out in my collection of Sonjas.
