"Down to Earth" Hal Jordan visits the headquarters of Justice League International to see if there is anything there that might inspire him to rejoin the team. But the playful antics of the League members, more specifically Guy Gardner, convince him that the League simply isn't the place for him.
So Hal embarks upon a journey to "find himself". His travels take him to the town of Hope Springs, West Virginia (Also known as Desolation). He tracks down a woman he met once named Rose Lewis-Hardin. Rose only met him once as Green Lantern and has no idea who Hal really is. Hal offers to help her with the farm work for some room and board. He befriends Rose's young son, Toby.
But Guy Gardner arrives and bullies Hal into competing with him once again. The two engage in a ring-inspired arm wrestling match. Rose walks out and realizes that Hal is a super-hero. She asks him to leave.
Meanwhile, John Stewart is suffering from a nervous breakdown due to his actions, which once led to the destruction of a planet called Xanshi. Unable to deal with his guilt any longer, he flies to the ruins of the planet Oa.

"Emerald Twilight, Part Two: The Present" As the Green Lantern of Earth, Hal Jordan, proceeds to Oa after the events of the last issue, the Guardians of the Universe send a number of Green Lanterns in Hal's path to try and stop him. The first line is Ke'Haan of Varva and Laira of Jayd. Though they put up a good fight, they are no match for Hal Jordan as he defeats them and takes their power rings, leaving them floating in space and continues his rampage towards Oa. As they watch Hal's approach, the Guardians see that he is more resourceful than they had thought, but they are not worried as they have others to stop him. The next Green Lantern to oppose Hal is Tomar Tu who proceeds to create a construct of a parasite from his world who's grip is virtually unbreakable. However, it doesn't stop the mad Lantern as he cuts free of the construct and blasts Tomar into an asteroid. Just as he's about to finish Tomar off, Jack T. Chance arrives and attacks Hal from behind. Though he is tough, he is inexperienced compared to the years Hal has had and knocks Jack out and proceeds not only to continue his path towards Oa, but to steal the rings of Tomar Tu and Jack T. Chance. The next Lanterns to top Hal are General Kreon and Honnu. Both put up a fight, but are swiftly defeated by Hal who takes both their rings, just as Graf Toren comes and is punched out by Hal who proceeds to take his ring as well. The Green Lantern Boodikka, who was brought into the Corps by Hal. The fight between these two Lanterns is fierce as even though Boodikka is losing, she is determined to prevent Hal from taking her ring. Considering that, Hal proceeds to cut off Boodikka's right hand and takes her ring and leaves her in space, just as he arrives on Oa, where he faces the most important Lantern of his life, Kilowog. Even though the two of the greatest Green Lanterns in the Corps were close friends, Kilowog wants Hal to stop and doesn't want to fight him, but his loyalty lies with the Corps first. As they battle it out on Oa, it seems that they are both evenly matched, but because of the extra rings he gained from the previous Lanterns, Kilowog is clearly overpowered by Hal and is knocked out. Hal then continues his path on Oa towards the source of the Green Lantern Corps' power, the Central Power Battery. As he reaches the batteries, the Guardians try one last effort to get Hal to stop his rampage against the Corps, but Hal is unwilling to listen, let alone surrender. So, the Guardians send the last person out against Hal, but not a Green Lantern, at least not anymore, Sinestro, armed with a Green Lantern Ring once again as they are convinced that their feud ends here.

"Last Stand" The battle for Ranagar continues, and Adam Strange awakens to find Kyle Rayner taking on the threat of Grayven. While Lantern and Grayven swap attacks with one another, Adam regroups with Donna Troy and the injured John Stewart. John's body is bloodied and broken, and the others fear that he may not survive.
While Kyle continues to fight Grayven, he discovers that his foe is the self-proclaimed son of Darkseid. Grayven confesses that Rann is just a stopgap to his ultimate goal - the destruction of his father's home world Apokolips.
Donna and Adam Strange rejoin the fight and the Darkstars fight up against Grayven's armada. Charlie Vicker is shot at point-blank range and killed. While Chaser Bron leaps onto Charlie's killer, Galius Zed finds another target and bites into his arm. Merayn is petrified with fear over the fate of her lover John Stewart.
John is still alive however, and manages to crawl to the control panel that operates the Mega Zeta-Beam. He activates the device and points it at Grayven, teleporting him off of the planet.
The damage across the city-state is extensive, and the floating city of Ranagar threatens to fall from the sky. Kyle ensnares the entire planet inside of a force bubble and brings it safely to the planet's surface.
After everything settles down, Donna, John and Merayn decide to quit the Darkstars. Green Lantern says his goodbyes and flies off back towards Earth.

"In Brightest Days Past" Kyle Rayner digs himself out of rubble to find Sinestro fighting Hal Jordan in his Green Lantern garb. Kyle's appearance distracts Hal long enough that Sinestro uses his yellow power ring to cage them both. He then tells the Lanterns that he is going to kill the Guardians. Kyle uses his ring to break out of the cage and he and Hal agree to stop Sinestro.
The Lanterns fly to Oa, where Sinestro has captured the Guardians with his yellow power ring and is gloating. Hal flies in and begins fighting Sinestro while Kyle gets the Guardians to safety. Sinestro captures Hal and places him in a deathtrap. Kyle goes to save Hal and Sinestro escapes.
The Green Lantern Corps arrive and Kyle tells everyone he is from the future. After his story is told, Kyle and the Corps recharge their rings at the Central Power Battery. Then they go after Sinestro. They capture Sinestro and take him back to Oa. Once there the Guardians devise a way to send Kyle back to the future, but at the last minute, Sinestro pushes Jordan through the time portal, sending him to the future as well.

"Battle of Fire and Light" The story continues from the previous issue, where we see Green Lantern Kyle Rayner fighting against Alexander Nero. Both men have claimed the remaining power of the Green Lantern Corps. This energy was formed by the merging of the power of Oblivion, and the power of Parallax, who died to reignite the sun. The battle between the two men is fought between their different constructs. Both know that whoever wins will get the power, more power than any human has ever had control of, essentially giving them god-like powers.
Meanwhile on Earth, former Green Lantern John Stewart, the Golden Age Green Lantern Alan Scott, and his daughter Jade are watching the battle, as they see a large green spot in the sun. John suggests that Kyle should destroy the ring. Alan has considered that option, but it would be too risky and Kyle knows that as well. Since Nero's Yellow Power Ring siphons energy from the Green Lantern Ring, he has an advantage over Kyle, and using it against him, allowing him to access the power of the Green Lantern Ring, Oblivion, and Parallax combined. Jade barks at the two men, saying that instead of considering possibilities, they should gather all of Earth's superheroes and go help Kyle. But, Alan tells her that if they do that, then they would just be getting in the way. Alan tries to make his daughter feel better by telling her that he doesn't want Kyle to die as well, but that they should have faith in his abilities, because they feel that he can beat Nero and gain the power.
Both warriors continue to fight against each other intensely. Kyle creates constructs of himself and they all bash on Nero, but Nero taps more into the power and destroys the constructs and all Kyle can do is match him blow for blow. Suddenly, an explosion separates the two, and we see Qwardians entering the battle. But, they are here to help Kyle. Like Green Lantern, the Qwardians do not want Nero to get the power because they fear that once he has the power, he will turn on those who gave him the ability to attain that power. Kyle, undoubtedly, is a little surprised that the people who gave Nero the power ring now want to help him. But, they are lying, as they want to save him, not destroy him. A Qwardian puts a device on Nero before Nero turns on him and kills him. The Qwardians reveal that the device they have planted on Nero will teleport him back to the Antimatter Universe away from Green Lantern.
Suddenly, the Qwardian ship is destroyed, as Nero has staked his claim to the power. He feels the near limitless power flowing through him. Now, he has the ability to bend the universe to his will. But, Kyle attacks him from behind telling Nero that the power is not for him. But, Nero strikes back, telling Green Lantern that he's too late, as he has now become a living god. And he will force Kyle to kneel before his creator. But, Kyle is determined to stop him, and taps into the power and eclipses Nero's power and transports him to another dimension where they have no rings, constructs, or any sort of weapon. If the battle is to be decided now, it will be over flesh and blood, and they start fighting each other. Kyle has the upper hand, but Nero gains the advantage and starts beating Kyle. But the emerald hero will not stop and he pummels Nero to the point of unconsciousness. Just as he's about to finish Nero, he sees a portal back to the real world. He sees the image of when the last of the Guardians of the Universe, Ganthet, gave him the last Green Lantern Ring. Kyle realizes that this is the work of his predecessor Hal Jordan, as the Spectre. Hal tells Kyle that he is showing him the possibilities of his choices, he can go back and stop becoming Green Lantern, or he can go back and claim the power that he feels belongs to him. Kyle fears that Hal is showing him these possibilities because he will become a bigger danger than Hal was when he became Parallax. However, that is not Hal's intent. He tells Kyle that the reason why he's showing him these things is because he wishes that someone would have shown him the possibilities of his actions. And Kyle has made his decision.
Kyle comes out of the dimension and heads towards the sun, and into the power of the Green Lantern. He begins absorbing the energy, which is beginning to overwhelm him. But, Kyle will bend to the power, not break under it. He is no longer Green Lantern. He is no longer Oblivion. He is not Parallax. He is more and less in every sense, he is the ION.
