"Even in Death …"
Chris Claremont - Writer Brent Anderson - Guest Penciler Joseph Rubinstein - Inker Tom Orzechowski Letterer Glynis Wein - Colorist Louise Jones - Editor Jim Shooter - Editor-in-Chief
Synopsis: Jock Forrester kills himself in the Everglades after learning that he is incurably ill. His pain draws the Man-Thing close and his death frees the demon D’Spayre, who temporarily destroys the Man-Thing and takes on Forrester’s form. He calls Forrester’s daughter, Lee, on the phone, inviting her to visit him. Lee is Captain of the trawler Scott Summers is working on. She invites him to come along visit her father. They are expected by D’Spayre, who imprisons them. He forces Cyclops to relive bad times in his past turned into nightmare scenarios, until Scott can’t take it anymore and jumps out of the window. Outside, he is joined by the reborn Man-Thing and, together, they face D’Spayre once more. Scott now realizes that it is despair that gives the demon strength and, refusing to give in, he finds the strength to hold him, just as the Man-Thing finds the strength to beat him – for the time being. Cyclops takes the unconscious Lee and leaves the burning house. Back at the X-Mansion, the X-Men are still trying to repair the damage to the house done by Sprite’s battle with the demon. Angel offers to help with the costs and Wolverine and Nightcrawler make fun of Kitty, who takes their taunts more serious than they were intended.

"Kidnapped!"
Chris Claremont - Writer Dave Cockrum & Joe Rubinstein - Artists Joe Rosen - Letterer Glynis Wein - Colorist Louise Jones - Editor Jim Shooter - Editor-in-chief
Synopsis: Ororo and Stevie Hunter's trip to the ballet is interrupted by Miss Locke, who explains she needs the X-Men to rescue Arcade from Doctor Doom. She has captured the Greys, Moira MacTaggert, Candy Southern, Amanda Sefton and Illyana Rasputin to ensure their cooperation, and takes Stevie to complete the set. Storm informs Professor X, who summons Ex-X-Men Havok, Polaris, Iceman and Banshee to the mansion, as they need help to rescue their loved ones. While the four newcomers prepare to rescue the hostages from Murderworld, the rest go to Doom's castle. Storm's attempt to distract Doom while the others rescue Arcade fails, and Storm finds herself transformed to chrome, while the other X-Men are easily defeated. Meanwhile, Scott and Lee Forrester find themselves stranded on a deserted island after a freak storm; Scott is without his ruby quartz glasses.
Notes: - Arcade ran afoul of Doom in Marvel Two-in-One, during his dealings with Toadworld. - While Claremont intended for this to be the real Dr. Doom, John Byrne Suggested that this is just one of his Doombots (and a faulty one at that) in Fantastic Four #258. Uncanny X-Men #197 later validates this as well. - Xavier's suspicions about Magneto are, of course, correct, as revealed in Uncanny X-Men #148. - The spelling of Captain Forrester's name appears to change in this issue, from Aleytys to Aleytis, which is odd seeing as both are by the same writer. - While Colossus's sister had appeared before in Giant-Size X-Men #1, this is the first time she has been given a name.

Synopsis:
Charles Xavier informs Kitty Pryde and the rest of the X-Men that the Prydes are withdrawing their daughter from the school. They react with a mixture of anger, sadness, and confusion. Instead, she will be sent to The Massachusetts Academy, the headmistress of which is Emma Frost, the White Queen of the Hellfire Club. In a conversation with Storm, Kitty expresses her anger at her parents, feeling that these events are related to their pending divorce. Storm, who lost her parents at a young age, sympathizes with Kitty’s confused feelings of betrayal. Knowing she will miss Kitty, Storm drives her to her new school, which Kitty dislikes immediately. While waiting in a lounge at the Academy, Storm is ambushed by Emma Frost, who uses a special gun to switch their bodies. Soon after departing the Academy, “Storm” contacts Sebastian Shaw and tells him to initiate “phase 2” of their plan once she reaches Xavier’s school. Once she arrives there, she finds that Shaw has gone ahead with the second phase early, as sentinels are attacking the school. With her help, the remaining X-Men are taken prisoner. Elsewhere, the real Storm, in Emma Frost’s body, escapes her captors and finds Kitty. Her young friend does recognize her, of course, thinking her to be an enemy. Attempting to stop Kitty from phasing through the floor, Storm accidentally uses the unfamiliar psionic powers she currently has access to and knocks Kitty out, fearing she may have killed her.

Synopsis:
Wolverine and Rogue mix it up with the Yakuza in Tokyo’s Ginza district, until they get the information that leads them to the crimelord Nabatone, who in turn is supposed to lead them to Viper and the Silver Samurai. They infiltrate Nabatone’s estate - with Rogue being horribly cocky and find Nabatone dead. He has been for over a week. The man who arranged the meeting between Mariko and the Silver Samurai was an impostor and, while they’ve been wasting time here, their foes might be attacking the hospital where Mariko and the poisoned X-Men are. The fears are correct: Viper and a team of ninja assassins are attacking the hospital and dispatching of the agents posted there. Rogue flies in, grabs Viper and the Ninja and tosses them out of the building. Wolverine, in the meantime, challenges the Samurai and wins their brutal battle. As he intends to kill him, Mariko asks him to spare her half-brother. They are joined by an armed Viper, who demands they let the Samurai go. The Samurai faints, Wolverine and Mariko make a run for it and, before the gun’s energy ray can hit them, Rogue throws herself into the ray’s path, suffering severe injuries. After the gun overloads, Viper teleports herself and the Samurai away. Wolverine lets Rogue absorb his powers to save her life. In the meantime, Yukio and Storm battled some muggers and Storm, inspired by Yukio, starts to revel in her emotions, even her darker ones, instead of suppressing them
One week later, at the Yashida’s ancestral seat, Mariko, preparing for the wedding, is visited by Mastermind, who influences her in some way. At the wedding reception, the X-Men meet Cyclops’ girlfriend, Madelyne Pryor, for the first time and are shocked by her similarity to Jean Grey. Also, Storm returns, changed in a startling manner. She has gone, punk much to Kitty’s horror. As the wedding ceremony is to start, Mariko breaks it off in front of everybody, insulting Wolverine as unworthy.
Notes:

-The cover of X-Men Classic #77 (November 1992) is an homage to the cover of this issue, but with Rogue in front and Wolverine following.
-The story is narrated from Wolverine's viewpoint.
-The mysterious man who approached Mariko Yashida prior to the wedding was Mastermind. He used his power to influence her to call off the wedding.
Quotes:

“X-Men ... I've Gone To Kill -- The Beyonder“
Chris Claremont - Writer
John Romita Jr. - Penciler
Al Williamson - Inkers
Glynis Oliver - Colorist
Tom Orzechowski - Letterer
Ann Nocenti - Editor
Jim Shooter - Editor in Chief
Synopsis:
Rachel has gone to put an end to the Beyonder's exploration of the Marvel Universe with help from the Phoenix Force. The X-Men start looking for her with Cerebro. On Alcatraz Rachel assaults the Beyonder with all her might, in vain : the Beyonder remains unharmed. The Beyonder senses the inner troubles of Rachel, all she has known in her future timeline was death. Then he grants her enough of his power to actually kill him, but arranges for her to choose. She can either kill him, or save the X-Men, whom the Beyonder pitted in battle against a group of Sentinels from Rachel’s future. Rachel rushes to San Francisco where the X-Men are being assaulted by Sentinels and later returns to the Beyonder. The alien explains that he wanted to give her the chance to make up with her past and save the X-Men. He hopes that she has mnow inner piece and he will find it too. Angrily Rachel explains that he only used her like a puppet and sthat she has accomplished nothing on her own. Knowledge and maturity must be earned and deserved.
Notes:
- Signed by: John Romita Jr. on 08/11/2017
- Kitty briefly used the codename Ariel in “God Loves, Man Kills“ and according to Rachel would later be known under that name again in her future timeline.
- This issue is part of the Secret Wars II crossover that ran through the Marvel titles in 1985-1986. It followed Secret Wars I and was about the Beyonder, an omnipotent being, searching for answers to his existential questions.
- Rachel's dystopian timeline was described in Uncanny X-Men #141-142. Later visits to the Days of Future Past however show that Kate Pryde did not die at the hands of Nimrod, instead she was nearly killed by a radiation bomb and later merged with Sentinel parts to become Widget. Apparently the Beyonder creates only a simulation of the DOFP events torn from Rachel’s memories.
- The Beyonder takes Nightcrawler elsewhere, as can be seen in Uncanny X-Men #204.

Synopsis:
Lady Deathstrike pays Spiral for turning her three former Hellfire Club guards into cyborgs at her Body Shop. They want to kill Wolverine and then have the process reversed. During a snowstorm, they attack Logan by surprise, who barely escapes and is injured so much that he forgets who is. Barely more than a wounded animal, he runs into Power Pack’s energizer. The little girl recognizes him and though she is somewhat scared, it helps him survive in the snowstorm and keep him ahead of his attackers long enough for his healing factor to kick in. Wolverine then remembers himself and hides the girl in a safe location, while he takes out the cyborgs one by one until it is only him against Deathstrike. In the battle, Logan gets into a berzerker rage and takes the cyborg apart. Shocked by seeing the implants and cables he snaps back to his senses. Deathstrike says the transformation was necessary to become like him, yet Logan states the difference is that he had the adamantium bonded to him against his will, yet she asked to be changed and threw away her humanity for it. Deathstrike begs Logan to show mercy and kill him, but he says that mercy needs to be earned before he leaves to take little Katie home.
Notes:
-Signed by Chris Claremont on 10/03/2019
-Wolverine encountered Lady Deathstrike once before in Alpha Flight #33-34. She thinks him responsible for stealing her father’s work, as he was the first person to discover the adamantium bonding process.

Synopsis:
Because of injuries he received in battle with Lady Deathstrike, the X-Men have brought Wolverine to the Morlock Healer. As he still needs to rest they are allowed to stay in the tunnels. The others are still angry at Rachel as she, without permission, absorbed their life-forces to fight the Beyonder. Mindlinked with Wolverine because of her trying to push his healing factor, Rachel experiences recurring nightmares of Logan hunting and killing her. Overwhelmed, Rachel leaves the Morlock tunnels and wanders the streets of New York, thinking that she better had died among the X-men of her future timeline. Remembering the nice man who tried to help her after arrival in the present, only to get killed by Selene, Rachel goes in search for the ancient witch with one single goal in mind - kill her. Wolverine follows her and arrives in the Hellfire Club as Rachel already has defeated her opponent and holds her in telekinetic grip. Logan tries to reason with Rachel, but it’s useless she doesn’t listen. To stop Rachel from becoming a murderer, Logan rams his claws into her gut.

Synopsis:
The Marauders have reached the Morlock Alley in the abandoned subway tunnels below New York. Without warning, they randomly start to kill anyone at sight. Taken by surprise many Morlocks are injured or killed. One of them makes it to Xavier’s mansion to alert the X-men, before finally succumbing to his injuries. Psylocke, currently staying at the mansion, picks up images of the events in the tunnels right before the Morlock dies. Storm orders Illyana to teleport the X-Men to the Alley, while she asks Magneto to stay behind and protect the school and the New Mutants. Upon arrival, the team finds many dead and injured people, and not before long they too are attacked by the Marauders. Nightcrawler overpowers himself and can’t teleport away as Riptide spins across him, cutting his body in many spots. Colossus and Rogue protect the others by taking many direct hits of Riptide’s weapons and even one of Harpoons' spears hits Colossus‘ steel skin. Later, when Rogue is rendered vulnerable by Scrambler’s touch, Kitty tries to phase her to safety but is hit by another energy lance. The effects are soon evident. Kitty can no longer unphase and is stuck in an intangible state. Storm finally decides to retreat taking many injured and surviving Morlocks with them, but she sends Wolverine further ahead alone to bring them one single Marauder for questioning. Among the dead Morlocks are Piper and Annalee.

Ann Nocenti Editor

Synopsis:
Wolverine continues to stalk through the Morlock tunnels looking for survivors following his encounter with the Power Pack and battle against Sabretooth. As Wolverine searches through the tunnels, he finds nothing but dead bodies. When he senses rats coming to feed on the corpses of the dead, he scares them off, even though he knows that it's a futile gesture and that they will be back when he leaves. He is then contacted telepathically by Psylocke, the new telepath living at the X-Men's mansion. She asks Wolverine for a status report, and reminds him that he is to bring back at least one hostage. Wolverine tells her things look bleak, but he will follow orders and eliminate the rest of the Marauders after he has captured a hostage. He breaks off contact telling her that he has work to do.
Psylocke is a little annoyed by Wolverine's condescending attitude, but shakes it off and turns her thoughts toward the survivors of the massacre. Down below in the mansion's medical center, Moira MacTaggert, Sharon Friedlander and Magneto try in vain to save another critically wounded Morlock, but the Morlock dies in the process. Each death ways heavily on both Callisto and Storm. When Callisto confides to Storm that other than the X-Men, nobody would care about what happened to the Morlocks, Storm in turn believes that the same is true about the X-Men. She looks over her injured teammates, Nightcrawler and Shadowcat, the latter of whom is stuck in her phasing state and is rapidly becoming a living ghost. When she listens to Colossus talk about killing the Marauder named Riptide for injuring Nightcrawler, Storm considers how far the X-Men have fallen. The idea that such a noble group would resort to killing causes Storm to break down and rush out of the room in tears. She runs out across the Xavier property until she reaches the lake and dives in and swims away in order to let loose her feelings.

Synopsis:
Magneto, Callisto, Storm and Wolverine check the empty Morlock tunnels for any traces of the New Mutants or the Marauders, yet they find nothing. The firestorm destroyed any clues. Psylocke, in telepathic contact with them, tells that at the mansion everything is secure and she offers to do a telepathic scan for the Marauders, yet both Storm and Magneto veto that. She is not a member of the team, and as the action might contain unknown dangers, they do not want her to take such a risk. Suddenly Psylocke registers another presence at the Xavier estate. It’s sabretooth, who quickly takes out Rogue and then turns on Psylocke. She draws him away from the infirmary to not endanger the many patients there and manages to evade his attacks till the X-Men arrive from the tunnels. Wolverine steps in and the two archenemies fight, Magneto creates some metal shackles for Creed, but Betsy asks him to wait. She thinks that she can only mindprobe Sabretooth when he is distracted. As the battle goes on she slips into his memories and aquires the nedded information about the Marauders and their employer. Then Wolverine fills in Sabretooth that he has been conned, before he has to fight the whole team, Creed jumps into a lake and escapes. The team apologizes to Betsy and ask her to become a full member. In Los Angeles Malice takes full control of Dazzler and makes her loose the disguise. Synopsis:
In her hospital bed, Madelyne Pryor has a nightmare about being the sole survivor of a plane crash. She is brought to an ambulance, but the paramedics seem familiar and Madelyne realizes she is in trouble. She breaks free but is eventually gunned down by two of the Marauders. Madelyne finally wakes up from her coma, much to the surprise of two doctors, who have been treating the unconscious woman for weeks. At Xavier's, the X-Men load up the wounded onto the Blackbird. They're going to take them to Moira MacTaggert's in Scotland. Only Storm and Wolverine are staying behind. During the flight Shadowcat, still stuck in a phased state, walks up to the sleeping Longshot and gives him a kiss. He wakes up and feels death within Kitty. Meanwhile, Storm and Wolverine take a trip to Sara Grey's house. They arrive and find the place on fire. Wolverine picks up a familiar scent and goes berserk. He knocks Storm out and runs away. Storm wakes up in a prison cell. She escapes and finds out she's in a building filled with animal heads and war memorabilia. The owners of the building come back, they are three super-powered war veterans by the names of Crimson Commando, Super Sabre, and Stonewall. After a big fight, Storm is subdued. Later, she finds out she and another girl are going to be hunted by these three men. They get a head start and take advantage of it. At sunset, the men go hunting.

- Madelyne Pryor was brought to the hospital as "Jane Doe" in Uncanny X-Men #206. The nightmare is a mix of what she believes to be her past (sole plane crash survivor) and the events that led to her current condition. X-Factor #38 explains that with Jean Grey being found alive, Mr. Sinister wanted to eliminate all evidence of Madelyne Pryor being her clone. He had ordered the Marauders to kidnap the baby and kill Maddie, but fighting back with powers she did not even know she possessed, she survived.
- Colossus, Nightcrawler, and Shadowcat were seriously injured during the Mutant Massacre. Kitty was stuck in a phased state, whereas Piotr and Kurt received terrible wounds.
- Longshot arrived at the mansion in Uncanny X-Men Annual #10. In that issue, Kurt, Kitty, and Nightcrawler are all unharmed, so the story has to be set before the Mutant Massacre. It's unknown where Longshot was from Uncanny X-Men #210-214.
- Sara Grey's house exploded in X-Factor #12. Much later the X-Men found out that Sara was absorbed by the Phalanx [X-Men (2nd series) #36], while her two kids were abducted by Nanny. [X-Factor #35] How this came to be was never explained.
- The X-Men don't know that Jean Grey is alive at this point, which is why Wolverine went crazy. Jean was revealed alive in X-Factor #1, but her teammates among X-Factor thought it was best to keep it a secret since they were posing as mutant exterminators.
- Storm lost her powers in Uncanny X-Men #185 from being shot with the neutralizer gun Forge built for the government.
- Tommie was most likely the person Stonewall and Super Sabre were referring to when they talked about their hunt.

Synopsis: Wolverine's out and about running through the woods. He's on the trail of Jean Grey and he's starting to lose control. He runs out into a road and is struck down by a truck. The impact causes the truck to break down, however Wolverine keeps on running. Elsewhere, Storm and a drug dealer by the name of Priscilla Morrison are on the run from three super-powered war veterans. Storm lays a trap for Super Sabre that would decapitate him. She has second thoughts though and drops the trap. Priscilla is not too happy with Storm and how she's playing this game. After Sabre runs by, they head off into the woods. A little bit later, Crimson Commando and Stonewall come across Storm's trap. The fact that she didn't spring it causes Stonewall to resent going after Storm. Super Sabre comes zipping by again and they show him the trap. Sabre takes off intent on beating them to where they're going. He arrives at the most likely spot and waits. Unfortunately for him, Storm and Priscilla are already there. Storm attacks him and they fall off a small cliff. Priscilla takes advantage of the situation and causes an avalanche on both of them. She runs off and comes across the broken down truck and the couple it belongs to. Priscilla steals their gun and shoots them. She gets in the truck and takes off, but soon ends up in a swamp. Later on in the evening Stonewall finds Priscilla sleeping by the swamp and goes towards her. However, Storm is there hiding and she gets the upper hand on him. After rescuing him from the swamp and escaping a brain bashing from Priscilla, Commando comes upon her. Wolverine is also there and everyone watches as Storm fights the Commando. After a few minutes Storm wins and tells him to give up to the authorities or else she will kill them both. Commando eventually agrees and later they turn themselves in. Storm and Wolverine are there to make sure they do. During a conversation with Wolverine, Storm decides to take a new approach to thwarting evil mutants. In the meantime the other X-Men are at Moira's lab complex on Muir Island. No signs of trouble except a few more Morlocks have died of their injuries.
Notes: - At this point Wolverine and the X-Men had no idea Jean Grey was alive and well and part of X Factor. - Several Morlocks and three X-Men were injured by the Marauders during the Mutant Massacre and are currently being treated in the Mutant Research complex on Muir Island. - Val Cooper arranged for Stonewall and Crimson Commando to become part of Freedom Force in Uncanny X-Men #223. The same issue reveals Super Sabre to be alive. He needed some time to recover from his injuries and too joins Mystique's group.

Synopsis:
Rogue and Dazzler are about to be attacked by Polaris when Havok, from a very far distance, blasts her out of the sky. Rogue flies Dazzler and the unconscious Polaris to the beach. Rogue leaves in search of Maddie, leaving Dazzler behind to guard the Polaris. Havok, Psylocke and two police officers come on scene. Polaris wakes up and attacks Havok and everyone else. More Marauders show up (Vertigo, Harpoon, Arclight) and start fighting. Thanks to Psylocke, Lorna briefly regains control of her mind. She loses it again, though, and the Marauders are able to trap all the X-Men in the sand, except for Havok who grabs onto Polaris' legs. Over at the Golden Gate Bridge, Longshot and Wolverine spoil an assassination attempt by Scalphunter. Scalphunter starts blasting away at them and Longshot falls off the bridge. Wolverine fights Scrambler and Sabretooth as well, before jumping off the bridge. He's saved by Rogue who takes him back up top, but the Marauders are gone. Wolverine heads back down to the water to look for Longshot and finds him rescuing Madelyne. A bit earlier, Polaris and Havok are above Alcatraz. The signal for the Marauder to leave is given and Polaris leaves Havok behind. He tries to blast her out of the sky, but she deflects his attack; he cries. Meanwhile, in the Rocky Mountains, Nazé and Storm continue their quest to find Forge. They're just sitting down to dinner when they come under attack from Eye Killers. Storm figures out their weakness is fire and both her and Nazé are able to destroy them.

Synopsis:
Colossus is relaxing in Scotland drawing pictures of the X-Men. A group of boys approach him and he’s taught a lesson on the state of mutants in young children’s eyes. A mysterious woman (Roma in disguise) asks him to sketch a picture of her. She disappears at one point and in her place is a statue of Colossus, the size of a trophy. He decides he needs to go back with the X-Men and calls up his sister to help him. Meanwhile, we find out that the Adversary has taken over Roma’s palace and plans on bringing absolute chaos to the world. Elsewhere, the X-Men are in Dallas trying to find Storm. They’ve tracked her to Forge’s penthouse. Freedom Force shows up to try and arrest them. A long battle ensues. The end results: Dazzler and Rogue are captured by Freedom Force and the X-Men have Mystique. The X-Men end up taking refuge inside the building. Destiny cries out, her precognitive power shows her that when dawn comes anyone in the building will be dead. Suddenly, a rift in the sky opens and sunlight pours through. The end of the world may be beginning.

-The mysterious woman Piotr was drawing was actually Roma, arbiter of reality ( a character who had so far only appeared in British Marvel Comics.
-Colossus was recovering from wounds sustained during the “Mutant Massacre”. Nightcrawler and Shadowcat were also severely injured by the Marauders.
-The important mission that Illyana talks about is to return Bird Brain home to his native island, as can be seen in New Mutants #58 and following issues.
-Spiral and Longshot are both from the Mojoverse. Actually she was sent after him to hunt him down; Longshot doesn’t remember as he arrived in the Marvel Universe amnesiac.
-Dazzler, Longshot, Rogue and Psylocke battled the Juggernaut in Uncanny X-Men #217-218.
-Naze was an Indian Shaman and also Forge’s teacher. He was preparing Forge to battle the Adversary.

Synopsis:
The X-Men are in Eagle Plaza with Madelyne Pryor and their prisoner Mystique, while outside Freedom Force has the unconscious Rogue, Psylocke, and Dazzler as captives. Both teams are unsure of what to do. Dazzler comes around and blinding Freedom Force, she tries to get away with her teammates, though Spiral, unaffected by the blast, rushes over and magically attaches Destiny’s mask to Dazzler’s face, blinding her. Both Psylocke and Rogue attack Spiral, but neither is able to best her. The rift in the night sky grows bigger and dinosaurs and Neanderthals start to appear, causing trouble all over Dallas. Wolverine decides to call a truce with Mystique so the teams can help each other figure things out. Split up in pairs of two, Freedom Force and the X-Men save many innocent bystanders and help the local authorities. A duo of reporters, Neal Conan and Manoli Wetherell, arrives at the scene and is in for the story of their lives. They capture it all on tape. Later they interview Mystique, and when Manoli makes an off-color comment about the X-Men, Havok angrily states how the X-Men have saved the world time and again. Spiral attempts to undo the spell she put on Dazzler, but the chaos interferes with her magic. A group of Cheyenne approaches, eager to help. They know a way to end this chaos, but their leader is shot by a human, apparently a racist... A firefight ensues killing most of the Indians.
