Chris Claremont - Writer John Byrne - Artist Terry Austin - Inker Whol & Orz - letterer Andy Yanchus - Colorist Archie Goodwin - Editor
Synopsis: In space the M’Kraan Crystal is going crazy and it’s effects are felt on Earth with various super-teams having to accept that they can do nothing but await the end of existence. In Space the X-Men are suddenly attacked by a small alien called Jahf, a guardian of the Crystal whose punch sends Wolverine flying into Orbit. He is finally defeated when Banshee realises that he is a robot and fries his circuits with his scream. The battle is not over however because another guardian then attacks. Before the battle takes off however the X-Men, Starjammers and D’Ken are all transported inside the Crystal where they all experience their worst nightmares. Phoenix overcomes this and enters the sphere at the heart of the Crystal where she senses that if the lattice within the Crystal dies so will all the universe. By using Storm and Corsair’s life forces as anchors Phoenix succeeds in knitting the lattice back together and experiences amazing levels of power. The universe saved, the X-Men return home along with an exiled Lilandra.

"Home are the Heroes!"
Chris Claremont - Writer John Byrne - Artist Terry Austin - Inker Joe Rosen - Letterer Andy Yanchus - Colorist Archie Goodwin - Editor
Synopsis: The X-Men return to the mansion following their adventure in space. There Jean has to try and explain to her parents about her life as a superheroine and she reminisces about how Corsair pleaded with her not to tell Scott he’s his father. Later Colossus, Storm, Banshee and Moira have a picnic and Wolverine is in the forest tracking a doe, he is suddenly attacked by a man calling himself Weapon Alpha. The two men know each other and they have fought before but Weapon Alpha now wears a suit that gives him super strength and flight. He knocks Wolverine to the lake where there others are having a picnic. Colossus and Storm quickly attack Weapon Alpha who sends an energy beam in their direction but it bounces off Colossus and hits Moira. This makes Banshee go crazy who attacks with very high frequency sonic beams. Weapon Alpha decides to escape but Wolverine warns the others that this battle was merely the beginning.
Notes: - Jean Grey’s transformation into Phoenix occurred in Uncanny X-Men #101. This is the first appearance of Weapon Alpha (later known as Vindicator and Guardian), the leader of Alpha Flight, he will attack Wolverine with the rest of the team in Uncanny X-Men #120. - Actually, despite Wolverine’s claims Hudson was not present when Wolverine quit in Giant Size X-Men #1. He only learned about that incidence later [as seen in Alpha Flight #17] - There are references to Charles and Moira’s past relationship in this issue including Charles expression when Sean and Moira kiss. - This is the first time Wolverine is called Weapon X in the book.

"The X-Sanction"
Chris Claremont - Author Tony DeZuniga - Guest Artist Annette Kawecki - Letterer Andy Yanchus - Colorist Archie Goodwin - Editor (With thanks to Dave Cockrum for a welcome art assist)
Synopsis: Outside the School for Gifted Youngsters, the X-Men play a friendly game of baseball, with Colossus preparing to hit Nightcrawler’s pitch. He hits the ball hard and Jean is forced to recover it, using her telekinesis. Piotr runs for base and plows into Wolverine, who isn’t happy at coming second best at anything. Moira MacTaggert heads inside to meet the telephone repair engineer and answers the door to a man with a badly scarred face. She shows him to the junction box, but is shot with a dart, which knocks her out. The man, Warhawk, is on a mission and goes to work on the mansion’s computers, realigning their programming. He suddenly reels in pain, as a mysterious man he calls the master mentally attacks him. He warns Warhawk that if he doesn’t serve him well, he’ll pay with his life. Before long, the remaining X-Men head inside and Warhawk knocks out both Jean and Professor Xavier too. The other X-Men have a Danger Room workout, but Warhawk traps them inside and uses the room against them. They work well together but are running out of time. Cyclops asks Nightcrawler to teleport Wolverine outside to shut the program down. Wolverine manages to destroy the system but Warhawk fights him and it takes the rest of the team to put him down for the count. He is taken away by the police, as Jean informs the team that she’ll be staying with them after all.
Notes: - Warhawk (Mitchell Tanner) was later revealed to have been working for the Hellfire Club, as seen in X-Men (1st series) #129. Chris Claremont - Author John Byrne - Penciler Terry Austin - Inker Tom Orzechowski - Letterer Mary Titus - Colorist Archie Goodwin - Editor
Synopsis: The Avenger, Beast, has come to Texas on the trail of the X-Men, after using Cerebro to detect their whereabouts. He finds a group of characters at a circus who look like the X-Men, though here they are performers in Mr. Mike’s circus. He doesn’t know enough about the new X-Men to be sure it’s them and decides to investigate further. After seeing a woman he believes to be Jean Grey use her telekinetic power during an acrobatic performance, he follows her to her caravan. He fails to convince her that he’s her friend and her companion, Slim, asks Hank to leave. In the struggle to eject him, Hank’s disguise is uncovered and Hank has to resort to punching Slim clear out the caravan. Slim calls for backup and Hank races through the site, trying to escape his pursuers. He is finally taken down by a huge metal fist crashing through the tent and is subsequently overpowered by greater numbers. As he is taken to their boss, Wolverine manages to free himself of his chains and forces a guard to spill the beans. He then manages to break the mental control on Jean, who frees the rest of the X-Men. Hank, meanwhile, discovers it is Mesmero who is running the show and, despite managing to defeat his goons, Hank is knocked unconscious by an unseen force. The X-Men break in to Mesmero’s caravan but he falls to the floor, out cold. Another man stands before them, a man who Cyclops knows they are in no fit state to face.
Notes: - Lorna Dane called Hank in Marvel Team-Up (1st series) #69 after no one picked up at the mansion. Havok’s adventure concluded in the following issue. - The Avengers began vanishing in Avengers (1st series) #170. The Collector was revealed to be the culprit in Avengers (1st series) #173. - Hank’s Uru hammer comment refers to Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, which was forged out of the mystical metal, Uru. - It’s strange that, after spending ‘weeks’ as prisoners, they managed to get their costumes back straight away. - When Mesmero greets the X-Men at the end of the issue, he is presumably being held up magnetically by Magneto.

"Magneto Triumphant!"
Chris Claremont - Author John Byrne - Penciler Terry Austin - Inker Bruce Patterson - Letterer Mary Titus - Colorist Jim Shooter - Editor
Synopsis: Magneto stands before the X-Men, having returned to gain revenge. Wolverine wants to take him down quick but Cyclops orders him to stand down, knowing Magneto must have an ace up his sleeve. Nightcrawler teleports outside the wagon and screams. Colossus rips open the door and they discover that they are now miles above ground, held there only by Magnetos power. He explains how he came to be there. He had followed Beast to the circus and overpowered Mesmero, simply to have this opportunity to defeat them. He ejects Mesmero from the wagon and is spotted by fighter pilots, who cannot keep up with the wagon. Time passes, with the X-Men unable to do anything to stop Magneto and he takes them to the Antarctic. There, a volcano’s lava opens up before them and the wagon drops into one of Magneto’s secret bases. There, he explodes the wagon and tells them they won’t be leaving again. Cyclops takes the fight to him but Magneto proceeds to defeat each and every of them, even Phoenix, whose power fades at the most inopportune moment. When they awake later, they find themselves strapped into chairs, unable to access their powers. Magneto tells them that they will remain there, in this prison, each possessing their full power but helpless to use it. His robot, Nanny, will tend to their every need but their captivity will be a living hell.
Notes: - Ringmaster is Maynard Tiboldt, a villain who runs the Circus of Crime. - The Magneto that Mesmero served was revealed to be a robot in X-Men (1st series) #58. - Tony Stark is the golden Avenger known as Iron Man and Reed Richards, the Fantastic Four’s Mr. Fantastic. - Alpha, the Ultimate Mutant, defeated Magneto in a storyline running through Defenders (1st series) #15 - 16. - This is the first appearance of Magneto’s robot assistant, Nanny.

"Showdown!"
Chris Claremont - Co- plotter, Scripter John Byrne - Co-Plotter, Penciler Terry Austin - Inker Gaspar Saladino and Annette Kawecki - Letterers Glynis Wein - Colorist Roger Stern - Editor Jim Shooter - Editor-in-Chief
Synopsis: Television coverage reports on another in a series of daring raids on research facilities throughout New Zealand and Australia by Magneto. He destroys the latest base but the authorities refuse to speculate on what he has actually stolen. Charles Xavier is in Kirinos with Lilandra and wonders why he has lost telepathic contact with his students. Meanwhile, underneath an Antarctic volcano, Nanny cares for her charges as Storm attempts to free herself using techniques learned as a child. Her plan is seemingly thwarted however by Nanny. Later, aboard Asteroid M, Magneto is alerted to a problem in his Antarctic base and flies there, only to find the place dark and Nanny out of control. Storm’s second attempt to free herself and her comrades has succeeded and the team attacks Magneto, with Cyclops telepathically organizing them through Phoenix. They keep him occupied with hit and run tactics, so as not to allow him to utilize his powers, but, when the control center is smashed, the whole complex begins to crumble. Lava begins to seep in through the cracks. Magneto manages to free himself and heads away, as Phoenix and Beast also make it to the freezing surface, where a blizzard rages. The complex explodes behind them. Jean, however, is exhausted and Hank seems to have very few options available to him.
Notes: - The X-Men defeated Magneto at Cape Citadel in X-Men (1st series) #1. - Nanny is a human-sized robot with two eyes, a mouth and a head shaped like Magneto’s helmet. Wearing a maid’s outfit, she moves on a single wheel and has two arms and hands with opposable thumbs. - Asteroid M was destroyed during a battle with the X-Men in X-Men (1st series) #5. - This issue marks the first time the series was published monthly since it was revived in 1975.

"Desolation"
Chris Claremont - Co-Writer John Byrne - Co-Writer & Penciler Terry Austin - Inker Jean Simek - Letterer Glynis Wein - Colorist Roger Stern - Editor Jim Shooter - Editor-in-Chief
Synopsis: Beast manages to carry on, despite being in the middle of Antarctica and with little hope for survival after escaping Magneto’s underground complex. He sees helicopter lights and tries to wake Jean. He is successful and she creates a starburst in trying to save her friends, which also attracts the pilot’s attention. They return a while later to the mansion and Charles Xavier weeps, as he realizes not all his X-Men have made their way home safely. Elsewhere in Antarctica, the X-Men find themselves in the Savage Land, having tunneled their way to freedom. After Banshee is rescued from a huge pterosaur, they make their way to a nearby village to rest. Later, whilst shaving, Cyclops realizes his connection to Corsair, something that hadn’t really crossed his mind before. Ororo speaks with him about sharing her grief over Jean’s death but Scott finds that, strangely, he has none to give. Colossus is taken away to a secluded island by two girls but Wolverine declines his invitation to join them. He is cut up about Jean, the first woman he’s really cared for. Ororo, meanwhile, goes for a swim but, as she relaxes, Karl Lykos grabs her and siphons the energy from her, transforming himself into one of the X-Men’s most dangerous foes.
Notes: - This was the first issue of X-Men to use the title “the Uncanny X-Men,” although it would not official become so until #142. - The two USN pilots later appeared in Marvel Fanfare (1st series) #1 and were named in that issue. - Corsair is the leader of the Starjammers. - The shuttle flight ended with the introduction of Phoenix in X-Men (1st series) #101. - The scene between Wolverine and Colossus was repeated in Classic X-Men #21. - Sauron seemingly fell to his death in X-Men (1st series) #61.

"Visions of Death"
Chris Claremont - Co-Plotter, Scripter John Byrne - Co-Plotter, Penciler Terry Austin - Inker Rick Parker - Letterer Francoise Mouly - Colorist Roger Stern - Editor Jim Shooter - Editor-in-Chief
Synopsis: Karl Lykos has siphoned Storm’s energy and become Sauron. He is challenged by the X-Men but Wolverine’s impulsiveness allows him to be used as a pawn against his teammates. Cyclops is forced to take Wolverine down, and both he and Banshee force Sauron to flee. However, the pterosaur soon finds Colossus and tries to take his energy instead. Unfortunately, the energy backlash proves too much and he reverts to his human form. Wolverine wants to do nasty things to him, but Ka-Zar arrives and manages to calm the situation down. Later, Lykos explains how he survived their last encounter and also how a priestess called Zaladane had resurrected the sun god, Garokk. Ka-Zar then explains how they tried to take Garokk down but proved unsuccessful. Wolverine and Banshee are all for helping in the struggle but Cyclops points out that Magneto is possibly still at large, and could target Professor Xavier next. Ka-Zar understands his predicament and leads the team to the Savage Land’s tunnel exit. However, there they encounter snow, which, as Ka-Zar points out, could mean death for the Savage Land.
Notes: Sauron hypnotized Wolverine just like he did the Angel back in X-Men (1st series) #60-61, from where part of Lykos’s flashback comes.

"To Save the Savage Land"
Chris Claremont - Co-Plotter, Scripter John Byrne - Co-Plotter, Penciler Terry Austin - Inker Tom Orzechowski - Letterer Glynis Wein - Colorist Roger Stern - Editor Jim Shooter - Editor-in-Chief
Synopsis: Ka-Zar leads the X-Men to Garokk’s City of the Sun God, which is inadvertently affecting the ecological balance of the Savage Land. They are attacked by airborne warriors and Cyclops, Colossus, Banshee and Ka-Zar are taken captive. Wolverine leads a rescue party to the city and they infiltrate the recently created structure, discovering their friends being held in the center of a huge arena. Colossus is consumed by flames, but remains defiant in the face of death. Nightcrawler suddenly teleports next to Cyclops, who frees Piotr. Soon the whole team acts like one and free one another whilst Cyclops heads after Garokk, who flees to the roof of the city’s dome. There, the two men battle, but their efforts begin to destroy the fragile city and it starts to collapse. The X-Men and Ka-Zar help evacuate the place, as Cyclops and Garokk find their battle interrupted when the domed roof crumbles. They fall but Banshee saves Cyclops from certain death. Storm attempts to recover Garokk, but her claustrophobia prevents her from reaching him. She emerges from the destruction safely, but all too alone. Later, Ka-Zar and Karl Lykos wish the X-Men well and they depart the Savage Land, only to be caught up in a fearsome gale.
Notes: - Valhalla Mountain is in Colorado, home of NORAD and the scene of John Proudstar’s death in X-Men (1st series) #95. - The authors appear to have taken some creative license in giving the pterosaurs such prehensile tails.

"Psi War!"
Chris Claremont - Script, Co-Plotter John Byrne - Pencils, Co-Plotter Terry Austin - Inks Clem Robins - Letters Glynis Wein - Colors Roger Stern - Editor Jim Shooter - Editor-in-Chief
Synopsis: Caught in a raging storm, the X-Men are found by a passing Japanese freighter and allowed to board. However, they are not allowed to communicate with the outside world, as the ship is on a mission. Jean Grey, meanwhile, leaves the mansion, ending a chapter in her already eventful life. Lilandra tries to cheer up Charles, but he has a lot of thinking to do. He recalls how he came to form the X-Men in the first place. After losing his first love, Moira MacTaggert, he bummed around the Mediterranean before ending up in Cairo. There, he met a young pickpocket, before encountering another telepath for the first time. This was Amahl Farouk, a malevolent entity who Charles immediately knew was trouble. They fought on the Astral Plane as their physical bodies sat in a Cairo bar. Charles struggled against his powerful opponent, but finally focused all his energies in a single blow to Farouk’s brain. In the physical world, Farouk collapsed and Xavier left, now knowing how truly deadly mutant powers could be in the wrong hands. His new aim led him to form the X-Men, to protect humanity from creatures like Farouk. Lilandra says that there is nothing left for him on Earth and asks Charles to accompany her back home. Charles finds himself agreeing with her.
Notes: - This was the first appearance of Amahl Farouk. He survived the battle with Xavier and later took on the New Mutants in New Mutants (1st series) #32-34. - The scene where Xavier battles Farouk was shown again in New Mutants (1st series) #34, when he took over the New Mutants. In that flashback, he was shown to be wearing a pink suit, but here it is white. His assistants were also different to those in this issue. - Charles' battle with Lucifer in Tibet was shown in X-Men (1st series) #20. - Misty Knight and Colleen Wing were, at the time, regulars in the Power Man & Iron Fist title.

"The Submergence of Japan!"
Chris Claremont - Co-Plotter, Scripter John Byrne - Co-plotter, Penciler Ricardo Villamonte - Guest Inker Tom Orzechowski - Letterer Glynis Wein - Colorist Roger Stern - Editor Jim Shooter - Editor-in-chief
Synopsis: The X-Men arrive at the Jinguchi Maru’s homeport of Agarashima and witness a city in flames. They quickly move into the city to help out, before continuing to the ancestral mansion of Shiro Yashida, who may be their only way out of Japan. Shiro doesn’t welcome their appearance, especially at this time, but the prime minister’s aide welcomes all the aid they can get. He refers also to Colleen Wing, who is there with her friend, Misty Knight. Cyclops finds that the Professor has shut down all the phone lines back in West Chester and really wants to get home quickly. Wolverine, meanwhile, meets a woman called Mariko Yashida, who overwhelms him with her beauty. They are getting along well but their peace is suddenly shattered by a localized earthquake. As they try to escape from the estate, several Mandroids appear, coming to kidnap the government officials. The X-Men fight them alongside Sunfire and soon manage to best them. However, as they are taken away by the police, a hologram appears from one of the Mandroid battle suits and the image of Moses Magnum appears. He warns the prime minister to acclaim him absolute ruler of the island nation in twenty-four hours, or he will sink Japan. Professor Xavier, meanwhile, leaves Earth with Lilandra to begin a new life in the Shi’ar Empire.
Notes: - The freighter is incorrectly called the Jinguichi Maru here. It was originally called the Jinguchi Maru. - Storm’s parents were shown to have been killed in X-Men (1st series) #102. - This is the first appearance of Mariko Yashida, Sunfire’s cousin.

"Twas the Night Before Christmas"
Chris Claremont - Author, Co-Plotter John Byrne - Penciler, Co-Plotter Terry Austin - Inker John Costanza - Letters Glynis Wein - Colors Roger Stern - Editor Jim Shooter - Editor-in-Chief
Synopsis: Flying over the Kuril Islands near Japan, Storm lets Nightcrawler drop and he teleports to a volcanic island below, the headquarters of Moses Magnum. Magnum has threatened to sink Japan unless he is made absolute ruler of the country. Kurt takes out a guard and enters the complex. He is there because Mr. Osama, the Japanese prime-minister’s aide, explained that it is from here that he will trigger his so-called ‘Magnum Force.’ Storm and Banshee create a diversion, which allows Nightcrawler to go deep into the complex. He sends Cyclops a homing signal, which lets his team, including Sunfire, to punch through the rock below the base and emerge in the right place. Unfortunately, when they finally break through, Moses Magnum himself is there to deal with them. He takes out both Colossus and Wolverine with ease before setting two Mandroids onto them. They are soon taken out by a furious Colossus, but Magnum departs to begin his destruction of Japan. Banshee knows he must act fast and uses his sonic blast to counter the Magnum Force’s effect. He scream is so powerful that he manages to destroy the base by shaking it to its very foundations. The X-Men and Sunfire manage to get free and return to Japan, while Sean recovers from a coma, induced by his exertions. Later, he emerges from his coma and returns to Sunfire’s house to be warmly greeted by the team. Jean Grey, meanwhile, visits Scotland and meets up with friends, gradually moving on with her life. Further north, Angus MacWhirter is killed by a stranger who is roaming Muir Isle.
Notes: - When Nightcrawler takes out the guard near the top of the volcano, he thinks that Wolverine would have handled the situation differently. This was evidenced in Uncanny X-Men #116,when Wolverine actually killed on of Garokk’s guards instead of incapacitating him. - Anthony Stark, better known as Iron Man, inherited his father’s business,Stark Industries, which sold weaponry and munitions, predominantly to the United States government. Colossus wears breathing apparatus along with his fellow X-Men, yet when in his armored form, he doesn’t actually need to breathe. Presumably, it is simply a safety precaution. - Moses Magnum was supposedly killed in Giant-Size Spider-Man #5 and in Power Man Annual #1. His so-called ‘Magnum Force’ is probably taken from Clint Eastwood’s 1973 movie of the same name, the sequel to Dirty Harry. - Jean Grey, unknown to Misty Knight, already believes the X-Men are dead. - The X-Men ‘rented’ a hovercraft from Angus MacWhirter in X-Men (1st series) #104.

"Wanted: Wolverine, Dead or Alive!"
Chris Claremont - Co-plotter, Scripter John Byrne - Co-plotter, Penciler Terry Austin - Inker Tom Orzechowski - Letterer Glynis Wein - Colorist Roger Stern - Editor Jim Shooter - Editor-in-Chief
Synopsis: The Canadian prime-minister wants Wolverine caught and Vindicator is once again given the task of bringing him home. He contacts Alpha Flight to help him. The X-Men leave Japan by plane, but the pilots find themselves in a storm that seems to have an intelligence all its own. They are forced to land at Calgary in Canada and, there, Vindicator calls for Wolverine to hand himself over to them, or he won’t be responsible for what happens. Before the X-Men can respond, Sasquatch acts over-eagerly and destroys the plane. The X-Men protect the innocents aboard by escaping in a blizzard controlled by Storm. In Calgary, they split up and agree to rendezvous later. Nightcrawler is quickly caught by Northstar and Aurora, and Wolverine finds himself ambushed by Sasquatch. Vindicator, though, is fought off by Storm, but this leaves Cyclops and the rest of the X-Men with the task of rescuing their two colleagues.
Notes: - James Hudson appeared in X-Men (1st series) #109, though he used the name Weapon Alpha there. Here, he uses the name Vindicator. - Jeryn Hogarth is a celebrated and very rich lawyer, who was an ally to several super-heroes, as well as Misty Knight and Colleen Wing. - Shaman’s mention of the X-Men’s elemental being a male is understandable, considering they’ve never met Storm and they are, after all, called the X-Men. - Nightcrawler’s harassment at the hands of the villagers of Winzeldorf was shown in Giant-Size X-Men #1. - James Hudson mentions a woman called Heather. This is his wife Heather Hudson, who later became a member of Alpha Flight herself. She can be seen in Classic X-Men #26. - A spalpeen is a good-humored Irish slang for a “good for nothing” fellow.

"Shoot Out at the Stampede!"
Chris Claremont - Author & Co-Plotter John Byrne - Penciler & Co-Plotter Terry Austin - Inker Diana Albers - Letterer Glynis Wein - Colorist Roger Stern - Editor Jim Shooter - Editor-in-Chief
Synopsis: Having lost Wolverine and Nightcrawler in Calgary, the remaining X-Men track them down to the stampede ground. Storm, Cyclops and Colossus break in and discover their comrades tied up in the center of the field. They approach them and are suddenly confronted by Alpha Flight. Vindicator argues the finer points of what they’re doing with Cyclops, as Colossus notices Northstar acting strangely. He reacts by causing a shock-wave, which unsettles the Canadian heroes. This is the catalyst for battle and, surprisingly, Wolverine and Nightcrawler join the fray, having being playing possum the whole time. Shaman has created a force field around the grounds and now creates some mystical creatures, which join the fight. Cyclops picks them off but the distraction allows Northstar to land a solid punch on the back of his head. Nightcrawler tussles with Aurora, while Colossus is matched with Sasquatch. Snowbird takes to the skies to keep Storm out of the fight, morphing into the form of a giant Arctic owl. The blizzard created by Shaman grows and grows and Ororo knows that she must act. She gets rid of Snowbird and heads above the clouds. She uses all her energies and skills to concentrate on the patterns created by the weather, and, slowly but surely, disperses the storm. Returning to the stampede grounds, she is attacked by Northstar but he is quickly dealt with by Scott. After tussling with Vindicator, Wolverine decides to hand himself over to bring matters to a close and Vindicator acknowledges his wise choice. He is placed in a truck, which has a supposedly escape-proof cage inside it. The X-Men are escorted out of Canadian air space but soon agree to return and recover their friend. Fortunately, they find that he has already managed to escape and is on board their flight, chatting up the pilot, Annie. Overjoyed and relieved, the X-Men are finally on their way home.

Notes: - The X-Men fought Magneto in X-Men (1st series) #112 - 113. - The X-Men fought the Living Monolith in Power Man & Iron Fist #57, following the last issue. - Angus MacWhirter died in Uncanny X-Men #119. - Jean states that she is using her telepathic powers to help carry her boxes. This is presumably an error on the writer’s part. It should be her telekinesis which does this job. - Storm was in the Sun God’s city in Uncanny X-Men #116. - In one of the more interesting uses of continuity, Carter, one of the young men shown in the drug den, actually turned up many years later working in Our Mother of Mercy hospital during the Operation: Zero Tolerance storyline, clearly reformed.
