Set Description:
There are two obvious conclusions one could draw from looking at this set.
1. I am an Avengers fan (yes, I am!)
2. I am not Bill Gates
Avengers is my all-time favorite Marvel team book. I know it will take years for me to complete this set - if at all - but I look forward to the journey. I recognize it's impossible for me to compete in terms of sheer points (Cheetah's set rocks, by the way!), but I do wanna see how far I could go in trying to complete this. In the meantime, I take pride in knowing that I'm one of only a few folks out there who're able to get their hands on key 'Avengers #1 and #4 (signed by Stan Lee, at that!).

The Avengers are a team of superheroes, appearing in magazines published by Marvel Comics. The team made its debut in The Avengers #1 (September 1963), and was created by writer-editor Stan Lee and artist / co-plotter Jack Kirby.
Labeled "Earth's Mightiest Heroes", the Avengers originally consisted of Ant-Man (Dr. Hank Pym), Wasp (Janet Van Dyne), Thor, Iron Man (Tony Stark), and the Hulk (at a time when the Hulk was more intelligent). The original Captain America was discovered by the team in issue #4, trapped in ice, and he joined the group when they revived him. The rotating roster has become a hallmark of the team, although one theme remains consistent: the Avengers fight "the foes no single superhero can withstand." The team is famous for its battle cry "Avengers Assemble!" The team has featured humans, mutants, robots, gods, aliens, supernatural beings, and even former villains.
Publication History:
The titular team debuted in The Avengers #1 (September 1963), using existing characters created primarily by writer-editor Stan Lee with penciler and co-plotter Jack Kirby. This initial series, published bi-monthly through issue #6 (July 1964) and monthly thereafter ran through issue #402 (September 1996), with spinoffs including several annuals, miniseries and a giant-size quarterly sister series that ran briefly in the mid-1970s.
Other spinoff series include West Coast Avengers, initially published as a four-issue miniseries in 1984, followed by a 102-issue series (October 1985 – January 1994), retitled Avengers West Coast with #47; and the 40-issue Solo Avengers (December 1987 – January 1991), retitled Avengers Spotlight with #21.
Between 1996 and 2004 Marvel relaunched the primary Avengers title three times. In 1996, the "Heroes Reborn" line, in which Marvel contracted outside companies to produce four titles, included a new volume of The Avengers. Taking place in an alternate universe with a revamped history unrelated to mainstream Marvel continuity, The Avengers vol. 2 was written by Rob Liefeld and penciled by Jim Valentino, and ran 13 issues (November 1996 – November 1997). The final issue, which featured a crossover with the other "Heroes Reborn" titles, returned the characters to the main Marvel Universe.
Relaunched with a new first issue, The Avengers vol. 3 ran 84 issues (February 1998 – August 2004). To coincide with what would have been the 500th issue of the original series, Marvel changed the numbering, and The Avengers #500-503 (September–December 2004),followed by the one-shot Avengers Finale (January 2005),became the Avengers Disassembled storyline and final issues. In January 2005, a new version of the team appeared in the ongoing title The New Avengers, followed by The Mighty Avengers, Avengers: The Initiative, and Dark Avengers. Avengers vol. 4 debuted in 2010.

Thor locks Loki up in a land that prevents his body from getting out but Loki gets out his soul. He then finds Thor only to find he is in his human form as Dr. Blake, but he feels that if he defeated Thor like this it would be a hollow victory, so he goes and finds the Hulk. He makes an illusion of dynamite near the Hulk on some train tracks. The Hulk thinks the dynamite is real and it is going to explode so he goes down and tries to grab the dynamite, but since there is none he goes through the illusion of the dynamite breaking the train tracks and going into a small hole. A train is coming so Hulk picks up the tracks and the train goes by. The train conductor saw the Hulk and thought he was trying to kill everyone on the train so the hunt for Hulk begins. Rick Jones sees the headline in the newspaper and so he tries to call the Fantastic Four through a radio signal. Loki wants Thor so he changes the radio wave signal to Thor. The message is also heard by Iron Man, the Wasp and Ant-Man. All the heroes go to the house of Rick Jones when Thor sees out from the window an illusion of the Hulk. Thor takes the bait and Thor is brought to Asgard. All the other heroes chase the Hulk to a circus, then they go to a tire factory. Thor finds Loki, defeats him and returns to Earth stopping fight between the team and Hulk. Loki tries to escape by becoming radioactive but Ant-Man traps him in a lead container. The team decides to join forces and become the Avengers, after the Wasp names the team. (marvel.wikia.com)

After escaping the Avengers previously, the Sub-Mariner encounters Inuit worshiping a man in a block of ice in the north sea. Angrily he casts the frozen man into the ocean. The Avengers discover the body, which had been thawed by warmer waters. It turns out to be the hero of WWII, Captain America. His body had been frozen and preserved after a failed mission near the end of the war. The Avengers then attend a press conference where they are turned to stone by a creature with a mysterious ray. Owing his life to the Avengers, Captain America tracks down the alien and makes it restore the Avengers back to normal. In return the Avengers try to free the alien's craft from the water and the Sub-Mariner attacks. After fighting him off, they finish freeing the craft and the alien departs. Got this off gr1056 via ebay, 3-30-10. Probably equal to if not even greater than, significance-wise, issue no. 1. Makes me feel good to own a copy of this, even if its a low grade book, given the Stan Lee & Joe Simon signature.

Giant-Man believes something dangerous is happening beneath the earth but none of the other Avengers believe him, so he heads underground himself to investigate. Shortly after, he is captured by Mole Man. More damage occurs and the Avengers discover Giant-Man was correct, so they invade Mole Man's underground base. Meanwhile, the Red Ghost approaches the Mole Man and they make an alliance. The Wasp manages to free Giant-Man and the team stops the Mole Man and Red Ghost's plans. (marvel.wikia.com)

The Avengers prevent the Maggia from commiting another crime. Count Nefaria decides he needs to put the Avengers out of action. As no one knows he is the leader of the Maggia, he holds a party in his castle and invites the Avengers. While they sleep after the party Nefaria makes copies of each of the Avengers who he commands to declare war on the United States. When the real Avengers leave the party they are attacked by the Army. They discover what has happened and pursue and battle Nefaria, getting evidence from him that proves their innocence. The Avengers rush the dying Wasp to the emergency room but there is nothing any of the doctors can do for the Wasp. The only man who may be able to save her is a Dr. Svenson. Thor finds him as quickly as he can only to find out he is an alien impostor. The alien dies when exposed to the atmosphere of Earth because its mask was removed. Giant-Man uses his ants to search all over the world but to no avail, so he concludes that wherever he is there are no ants. This leaves the north and south poles. Heading to the north pole they find an alien base, where Dr. Svenson is being held. The aliens are found to be Kallusians, and they are hiding from other aliens who will destroy them. They are soon discovered and have to flee. Dr. Svenson is brought back to America and operates successfully on the Wasp. No one knows whether the Kallusians survived or not. (marvel.wikia.com)

The Avengers are in the middle of training when a robot breaks into the headquarters. After disabling it, it inform them the Hulk is in the desert. The robot was sent by the Mole Man, and the Avengers are lured into his trap. They are attacked by the Minotaur, a creature belonging to the Mole Man. Quicksilver manages to get separated from the team and is captured by the Mole Man's Moloids. The three remaining Avengers trap the Minotaur and look for Quicksilver. He is freed and they defeat the Mole Man. (marvel.wikia.com)

The Avengers receive a distress call from the communist state of Sin-Cong, where they are being ruled by the cruel Commissar. The Avengers leave to help but are attacked by the Commissar's troops on arrival. The troops are defeated but the Scarlet Witch falls into a trap and is held captive. The other Avengers have to fight one-on-one with the Commissar to save her. Captain America, Hawkeye and Quicksilver are all bested. Scarlet Witch insists that the Avengers aren't defeated as she hasn't fought him yet. Using her hex power the shows that the Commissar is a robot and she short-circuits him. The Swordsman infiltrates the Avenger's base and Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver attack him. He then admits he was testing them and wants to apply for membership. Captain America intervenes with information saying he is a wanted man and the Swordsman escapes. Hawkeye explains that the Swordsman used to be his tutor when he was in the circus. Meanwhile, in Nick Fury's office in Washington D.C. HYDRA agents find a letter from Captain America. They later discard it as trash. It explained how Captain America wanted to work for S.H.I.E.L.D. A mobster finds it and gives it to the Swordsman. A trap is laid for Captain America. He then leaves to meet with "Nick Fury". Hawkeye finds out about the plan and gathers the other Avengers to help him. Captain America battles the Swordsman and gets captured before the others can arrive to help. He then holds him captive on scaffolding. Captain America then jumps off the scaffolding so the Avengers don't have to surrender. (mavel.wikia.com)
