Set Description:
Idea and Design Works, LLC currently owns the Transformers comic book license as of May 2005, following the financial collapse of the previous license holder, Dreamwave Productions, at the tail-end of 2004.
IDW's flagship storyline is a rebooted Generation 1 continuity, which started out being written by longtime Transformers scribe Simon Furman and told through a succession of mini-series and one-shot Spotlights, before finally producing a monthly comic in 2009. IDW has also been authorized to re-release trade paperbacks published by Dreamwave Productions, such as the War and Peace mini-series and The War Within and War Within: The Dark Ages. In May 2008, IDW's relationship with Hasbro proved to be quite healthy indeed as they snapped up the G.I. Joe comic book license as well.
IDW used to mock your nerdy belief that writers and editors should be able to remember things that happened in previous issues, but then they hired John Barber.
Initial ideas for IDW's Transformer line included a Crisis on Infinite Earths-style story crossing over with the new Cybertron toyline, starting ongoings in both G1 and Cybertron continuity. The G1 cast would suffer Cybertron's destruction and learn Unicron's death had destabilized the entire omniverse, forcing them to try and assemble an artifact called the "Decepticon Matrix" in order to resurrect Unicron. This would parallel with the Cybertron plot, in which the Autobots seek out the Cyber Planet Keys to revive Primus, and Vector Prime would have appeared as a guide in both series. It seems that series would then have come together with the concurrent Cybertron comic as Transformers from across the multiverse were brought together for a final, epic clash.
This was considered too confusing for new readers, however, and dropped for a continuity reboot of Generation 1. Furman mostly oversaw this, creating a more sophisticated universe around the familiar characters and tropes: Marvel Comics' Ultimate line was the inspiration, and Furman deliberately borrowed the more leisurely pacing of Ultimate Marvel.
Instead of an ongoing civil war on Cybertron which spills over to Earth by accident, Furman presented us with an interstellar war between the Autobots and Decepticons, a war of Code of Interplanetary Conflict and alt-form-and-dagger covert operations, with energon the prize and whole planets at stake. A surprising development on Earth heats up the war and turns our planet from just another proxy battleground into the ultimate prize.
This slow, measured storyline was eventually abandoned in an attempt to bring in more casual fans with a more G1 Cartoon-inspired revamp in All Hail Megatron. This failed to have the desired effect both in terms of sales and fan-response, so another revamp was attempted with the start of The Transformers ongoing series. It was met with sharp fan criticism as well. Yet another revamp was attempted with two concurrent ongoing series, More Than Meets The Eye and Robots In Disguise. Positive fan response came at last.

Synopsis Issue #0: "Prelude To Infiltration"
At a bus station in Phoenix, Arizona, young Verity Carlo is picking her marks when she spies a high-end palmtop PC in use by an anonymous businessman. Unknown to all, he's being tracked by someone, or something, in the guise of a black sports car.
Using a stolen ticket, Verity hops onto the same Los Angeles-bound coach as the businessman and while he's napping she lifts his palmtop. Helped along by a rancid bagel, Verity feigns illness and is left at the side of the road. The coach takes off, followed closely behind by two seemingly normal sports cars. Verity sticks out her thumb at the next car and is picked up by an intense young man, Hunter O'Nion, who is rather self-conscious about his last name. Hunter takes a sudden detour and the pair discover that Verity's coach has been run off the road by two sports cars. Everyone's okay, except that the businessman whose palmtop Verity stole is missing.
After lots of prodding by Verity, Hunter reveals that he's an internet alien conspiracy theorist tracking down reports of giant machines in the area. She just finishes a laugh at his expense when the two are scanned and attacked by a blue fighter jet.
Hunter's van is destroyed, but he and Verity are saved—by the smiling driver of a suspiciously well-armed ambulance...

Bot Con!!
San Diego, CA (August 22, 2005) Every year, the Transformers faithful attend BotCon, a Hasbro-sponsored convention, to discuss their beloved robots in disguise. This year, those fans are in for a special treat in the form of IDW Publishing’s The Transformers #0, which will be making its debut at the show. What’s more, the comic will feature a special cover designed and illustrated by Hasbro’s Brand/Marketing Creative Director Aaron Archer and his staff.

Optimus Prime reflects on the responsibilities of all advanced races to spread freedom and peace, and laments that all the Cybertronians have spread is war. The Autobots have been in hiding amongst the humans for the last two years as Earth's cities were rebuilt following Megatron's planet-wide assault. Ratchet and Prowl are in their alternate modes, watching for signs of any trouble: trouble that comes as Breakdown destroys a power station in search of energon.
The attack is monitored by Skywatch control, and Spike Witwicky orders his forces to capture the invader. Breakdown is set upon by Spike and several other personnel in armored crash suits, built using stolen Cybertronian technology. Prowl and Streetwise are amongst the human police on the scene, and watch as Breakdown is immobilized and forced into his alternate mode by Skywatch forces. When they bring out their lethal particle cannons, apparently to destroy the Decepticon, Prowl can watch no longer and transforms, only to be brought down in turn: Spike had intended to draw him out all along. As he and Breakdown are driven away, Streetwise contacts the other Autobots...
At Autobot base, Wheeljack has engineered a counter to the inhibitors, and Optimus Prime orders him to fit them to their remaining forces. Hot Rod questions Prime's leadership, particularly their presence on Earth and the corresponding loss as more of their number are captured. Prime reiterates the need to protect Earth in case of possible Decepticon attack, but allows Hot Rod to stage a rescue mission to retrieve Prowl; he assigns Ironhide to go with him.
The rescue attempt goes poorly when it is revealed that Prowl was bait in a Skywatch trap; although Hot Rod's team rescues him, Ironhide dies leaping into a blast meant for Hot Rod. Optimus Prime grieves for his friend, and in a speech to his fellow Autobots removes himself as active commander.
Alone and ruminating on the end of the war and the new era in which they find themselves, Optimus Prime drives into the desert and into a Skywatch facility. As soldiers surround him, he raises his hands in surrender...

Synopsis: Things Fall Apart, Part 1: "New Arrivals, Old Encounters"
Leaving a booty call in Albuquerque, Spike Witwicky receives the call from Skywatch personnel informing him of the attack on their holding facility; they request his attendance to deal with the surrender of Optimus Prime.
Back at their base, the Autobots discuss Optimus Prime's actions; Cliffjumper theorizes that it may be a test of some kind, although Hot Rod credits it to his inability to handle the situation. While the others call for a leadership vote, Hot Rod states his desire to leave the planet despite the protests of Brawn. The former asks if anyone else wants to join him in his desertion, and Jetfire, Red Alert, Prowl, Sandstorm, Silverstreak, and Mirage do so to Bumblebee's obvious disappointment.
At the Skywatch facility, Spike holds a conference call with his father regarding the status of Optimus Prime, and the commander nixes Optimus's transport to the command center. He implies disappointment with Spike's abandonment of his duties, and says that he'll be conferring with the other chiefs before making any plans.
The Autobots who remained at the base resume their plans for a leadership election, and when asked who he would nominate, Cliffjumper chooses himself.
In the desert, Hot Rod, Mirage, Red Alert and Prowl discuss plans to find another world with Omega Supreme. Although alone he lacks the energon to reach orbit, they figure they can escape Earth by pooling their resources. However, on hearing of Optimus Prime's surrender, Omega Supreme refuses to leave.
The group are being monitored by some of the Decepticons abandoned on Earth, including Swindle, Scrapper, Thundercracker, and Tankor; they had been planning a revenge attack on Omega Supreme but now see a better alternative. After a brief skirmish, Swindle calls for a ceasefire.
At Skywatch, Spike orders the transformation suppressor removed from Optimus Prime; as the latter resumes robot form, Spike offers to talk.
Swindle appeals to both the Autobots and Decepticons, reminding them that there is no longer a need to fight since the war is over; he suggests they work together in order to go home. Prowl is suspicious, but Hot Rod decides to put it to a vote.
At the Autobot base, Wheeljack brings in the results of the leadership election; much to Bumblebee's surprise, he has won. Cliffjumper laments that it was just a "popularity contest", but Ratchet assures Bumblebee that the rest of the Autobots consider him trustworthy and dependable. They are interrupted by the arrival of a Cybertronian ship and go out to meet it as it lands. Ultra Magnus emerges and demands to know who is in charge. With the others looking at him, Bumblebee confirms that he is...

Synopsis "Command Performance!"
Outside the Ark, Optimus Prime presents to the Autobots their newest member, the titanic Omega Supreme. With his completion, the Autobots are free to mount a raid on the Decepticon base in order to steal the technology required to create combining robots. While nearly the entire Autobot force goes on the mission, Omega Supreme is left behind to guard the Ark.
Still bickering with his temporary co-leader Shockwave, Megatron takes most of his original crew to greet the Decepticons of Cybertron, who are anticipated to be arriving shortly via the space bridge.
During their journey to the Decepticon base, Skids runs afoul of a human driving an expensive Lamborghini, but Prime orders him to continue on. The Autobots arrive at the Decepticons' base and attack.
Megatron, meanwhile, finds that a group of Autobots has crossed the bridge instead of Decepticons; but before he can lead an attack, Shockwave radios him about the Autobot attack at their base. Megatron tries to take advantage of the situation by attacking the Ark, but his squad is soundly defeated by Omega Supreme, with only Megatron and Laserbeak escaping.
At the Decepticon base, Donny Finkleberg takes advantage of the battle to attempt an escape. When Shockwave sends Devastator against the Autobots, they gain the information they were looking for, and retreat. As the Autobots leave, the Lamborghini driver cuts Skids off, allowing Ravage to blast Skids with one of his missiles.
The battered Megatron returns, and though Shockwave accuses him of gross incompetence, Megatron reasons that Shockwave sat and did nothing while a trap—an attack that surely had an ulterior motive—sprang up around him. Shockwave cedes command in the face of Megatron's sound argument.
The Autobots are enthusiastic at their victory, but Optimus Prime cannot celebrate, as Skids is presumed lost...

Synopsis: Issue #4
Hunter O'Nion is alive, and in a strange medical facility surrounded by masked medical personnel. Something is injected into his IV bag, and the last words he hears are "Prep him for surgery", before he loses consciousness.
Outside Idea & Design Works Custom Wheels in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Ironhide, Jimmy Pink, Ratchet, and Verity Carlo conclude that the store's sophisticated security system indicates it is more than it appears to be. To avoid detection, Verity and Jimmy insist that they go inside, since the security system might detect the Autobots' holomatter drivers. Ironhide agrees reluctantly.
In Brasnya, Blitzwing is camouflaged and in the perfect position to take a shot at Optimus Prime. Just before he fires, Roller, controlled by Prime, takes Blitzwing out with a cannon blast; he'd been tracking the Decepticon from his Combat Deck.
The facsimile Georgi Koska drives onto the scene with Megatron still in his alternate mode as a hand gun; the two of them are attacked by Prowl, Wheeljack, and Jazz. Megatron gives the order for Koska to self-terminate as the other Autobots scramble to preserve him for study. Skywarp and Astrotrain appear and attack the Autobots just as Hardhead and Hot Rod arrive on scene via orbital jump to help. Seeking termination, the Koska facsimile limps toward the enemy line.
Verity and Jimmy are inside the auto parts store and nose around. Verity discovers a secret door behind a shelf which the two of them manage to open. What's inside?
As Brasnyan troops watch in surprise and confusion, the Autobots have their hands full with Skywarp and Astrotrain, then get some help in the form of Hardhead. With that added firepower, Prowl is only seconds away from capturing Koska, but an impatient Hot Rod gets in his way, and the two tumble out of control. Meanwhile, Nightbeat reports to Optimus Prime that all transmissions in the area have gone dead. Prime has bigger fish to fry; Megatron has just transformed and landed right in front of him.
In Indiana, the secret entrance leads Jimmy and Verity to a large workshop filled with advanced tools that Jimmy doesn't recognize. Jimmy sifts through the trash for clues, while Verity starts searching a computer and desk, where a business card catches her eye. Without warning, the door locks and the vents start pumping a gas into the room. The two humans are overcome and fall to the floor. On the computer screen, a timer starts ticking down.

Synopsis: Issue #5
An unidentified Transformer, appearing to be severely damaged, speaks with Abraham Dante of the Machination on the successful outcome of their latest test subject. The Transformer expresses his appreciation for Dante's selfishness and how that quality will help them work well together.
In Brasnya, Megatron and Optimus Prime square off. Megatron brags about the enhancements that have come with his Ore-13 power, but Prime isn't intimidated. As the Russian and Brasnyan forces watch in gaping amazement, the two Transformer leaders engage in a colossal battle as the other Autobots skirmish with the Decepticons. Meanwhile, Hot Rod and Prowl chase after the facsimile of Georgi Koska, hoping to grab him alive before Russian soldiers shoot him dead. The Autobots need his cellular template in order to identify other facsimiles on Earth.
In Fort Wayne, Ironhide and Ratchet are waiting outside the auto parts store; they're worried because Verity Carlo and Jimmy Pink haven't reported in for over ten minutes. Ironhide smashes through the front window and sends his holomatter avatar into the secret compartment in the back where he discovers the two humans unconscious and a timer counting down to something decidedly nasty.
In Brasnya, Megatron and Optimus Prime have tossed aside their weapons and are fighting hand to hand. The close proximity allows Megatron to shoot Prime in the face with an Ore-13-enhanced blast from his mouth, blinding and stunning the Autobot leader. Megatron then smashes Prime twice in the chest, grabs his spark chamber and gives it a crushing squeeze.
Prowl and Hot Rod manage to stop Koska from getting shot by Russian troops. Prowl advises the Russians to disengage and they do so hastily. Next, he tries to contact Optimus Prime to give a report but he doesn't get a response. That's because Megatron is squeezing the life out of Prime's spark, but, before Megatron can finish what he started, Roller blasts him. Distracted, Megatron smashes his fist into the mountainside, which sends an avalanche of rocks and snow over Roller. He then turns his attention back to Prime, but finds a lifeless corpse. Ahhh, the perfect time to gloat.
In Eureka, the archaeological dig has been taken over by Skywatch agents, who have uncovered parts of Shockwave and the Dinobots.

Synopsis: Issue #6
In Brasnya, Megatron gloats over Optimus Prime's dead body and orders the Autobots to kneel before him. Furious, Jazz, Hardhead, and Wheeljack instead attack him but accomplish nothing thanks to Megatron's enhanced Ore-13 power. Elsewhere on the battlefield, Hot Rod wants to join the others in attacking Megatron but Prowl orders him to stay with Georgi Koska and wait for Nightbeat to teleport them back to the ship. Prowl joins the battle himself, hoping Prime isn't really dead. Prime is indeed alive, having downloaded his mind into his Combat Deck module. While in this transition, known as infraspace, Prime has a strange vision of an unidentified Transformer calling out his name.
In Fort Wayne, Ironhide and Ratchet attempt to rescue Verity Carlo and Jimmy Pink. Ratchet cuts a hole while Ironhide's holomatter driver grows in size and lifts them up through it. Ratchet clears the shop just as the countdown reaches zero and the building explodes, but Ironhide is not as lucky. Clutched in Verity's hand is the Machination's calling card.
In Brasnya, Hot Rod and the facsimile are attacked by Skywarp and Thundercracker before Nightbeat can beam them out. A disembodied Optimus Prime contacts the Autobots and explains the weakness of Ore-13, having experienced it while battling Thunderwing. Prime reconnects with his battered body and blasts Megatron in the head at point blank range, wearing out his Ore-13 instantly and causing his retreat. Unfortunately, the facsimile was destroyed by the Decepticons' attack and Hot Rod was badly damaged.
In the Machination's headquarters, Abraham Dante brings Hunter O'Nion to his Transformer co-conspirator and explains that the procedure is now a success. Hunter's purpose is now served, and Dante ponders if perhaps he could be part of their New World Order, which involves several headless Sunstreaker clones.
In Washington, D.C., Skywatch leader Joshua Red learns of the Brasnya incident and while the archaeological dig at Eureka won't net anything useful for the moment, the long captured and chained up Ravage and Laserbeak are ready and raving to go.
At the Decepticon base, an angry Megatron declares that if Optimus Prime wishes to summon reinforcements, then he will as well. Wasting no time, Megatron orders Astrotrain to summon Sixshot. Astrotrain panics upon hearing this, saying that it's not the proper phase for his level of devastation to be used on a world, but Megatron refuses to budge. Observing the exchange on Mumu-Obscura, the Reapers prepare to follow him to Earth... to devastate whatever is left in Sixshot's wake.

Synopsis
In the "high, arid wastes of Death Valley", a lonely stagecoach encounters Frenzy, who is standing guard near the Decepticon factory. He rather politely tells them to turn around and leave, but the occupant of the stage, Jacob Lee Bonaventure, tells him he may have business with Frenzy's employer.
Frenzy escorts him to Starscream. Bonaventure, while trying to track down the yellow machine's origins, has learned a great deal about the Decepticons' activities, though he has apparently not realized that there are two factions of Transformers. He offers to be Starscream's intermediary in dealings with humans. As Starscream no longer has Tobias Muldoon to serve in that role, he accepts. Bonaventure states that he doesn't really care about Starscream's long-term goals, so long as he makes a profit.
Meanwhile, in San Francisco, Muldoon is telling his story to Stanford Merriweather, Kitty Merriweather, and Mark Twain. The Merriweathers think he's delirious; Twain is slightly more credulous. The conversation is interrupted by Ravage, who bursts through the window, apparently intending to kill Muldoon. Twain fends off Ravage with a chair while Muldoon makes sure the Merriweathers (and their servants) get to safety. Muldoon then covers their retreat with a decorative sword and shield, until Ravage pitches him through a window. Ravage briefly gets caught in debris while exiting the house, which is rapidly filling with gas. Twain uses that moment to (apparently) flick his cigar at Ravage, which causes an explosion that flings Ravage into the bay. Merriweather is shocked, but now fully believes Muldoon's story, and promises to use his connections to get the Army and the President involved.
Back at the Decepticon factory, Bonaventure and Mister Vanfleet watch new Decepticons being assembled (or modified), and marvel that all this came from investigating one little yellow locomotive. Starscream overhears, and demands more information. Vanflint recounts how they investigated (the deliveries to the middle of nowhere were the primary clue). Starscream concludes that the yellow locomotive is Bumblebee, and that the Autobots are active. He orders Squawkbox to telegraph the news to all Decepticons.
Elsewhere, a lone Autobot crouches by a telegraph line. He intercepts a signal, and goes running off to convey the signal to the rest of the Autobots (badly startling a human and his horse).
At John Henry's camp, Brawley and Cletus are singing a song about Henry. He acts displeased, but is smiling. Bumblebee comes to tell Henry that he and the Autobots are leaving, to fight the Decepticons. Henry says that humans have a stake in this fight too, and wakes his crew, telling them they're riding with a new gang now.
At the Decepticon factory, an Army company arrives, to find it deserted. They telegraph their findings to Muldoon and his companions, who are aboard Merriweather's private train. Tobias correctly deduces the Decepticons' plans, and they set out to intercept them (and, apparently, send instructions to the Army).
Meanwhile, the Autobots, Henry, and his crew, are barreling east, as Brawley adds a new verse about Bumblebee to his song.

Synopsis "Warrior School!"
Walking through the woods in search of a road to drive Buster home, Ratchet and Buster meet up with a group of campers. As Ratchet demonstrates a new way to cook hot dogs, Buster experiences a severe head pain as an after-effect of his experience with Optimus Prime. Buster is taken home by the campers, leaving Ratchet free to deal with bigger problems.
Soundwave and Laserbeak use their innocuous alternate forms to infiltrate and take over another Blackrock Enterprises installation, this time an aerospace plant that builds jet fighters. Blackrock breaks the news to a hospitalized Josie Beller, who apparently designed this aerospace plant as well. Blackrock swears that the giant robots will be stopped, but Josie is already making plans of her own.
Ratchet returns to the Ark alone to verify Buster's findings, and soon finds the inert Autobots. He despairs upon finding the head of Optimus Prime, but Prime counsels him to fight as a warrior to defeat Megatron. Uncertain of what this might mean, Ratchet agrees.
Jessie and "O" attempt to cheer up Buster, who is wondering how to handle his father's flagging car repair business while he's recovering in the hospital. Buster explodes at the pair when they suggest that he can learn to repair cars just as easily as his hard-working father. After they leave, Buster is gripped by another head-splitting pain—and recovers to realize that several metal objects nearby were apparently floating in the air.
Ratchet soon finds Megatron, who easily overpowers him. But he manages to strike a deal, sealed with the sacred Rite of Oneness: Ratchet will destroy Shockwave, in exchange for the return of the Ark and the Autobots inside. If he fails, Megatron will destroy him; if he succeeds, Megatron resumes his leadership of the Decepticons and wins regardless.
