At some point in their lives, all young people believe their parents are evil...But what if they really are?
Meet Alex, Karolina, Gert, Chase, Molly and Nico - a group of teens whose lives are about to take an unexpected turn. When these six young friends discover their parents are all secretly super-powered villains, the shocked teenagers find strength in one another. Together, they run away from home and straight into the adventure of their lives - vowing to turn the tables on their evil legacy.
Created by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona, RUNAWAYS was published by Marvel Comics over the course of three volumes from 2003 to 2009. In addition to Vaughan and Alphona, the series also features work by Takeshi Miyazawa, Mike Norton, Joss Whedon, Michael Ryan, Terry Moore, Humberto Ramos, Chris Yost, Sara Pichelli, Emma Rios, Kathryn Immonen and others.
Following its debut, WIZARD Magazine called RUNAWAYS “the best original concept from Marvel in thirty years.” This is an apt description since RUNAWAYS was very much ahead of its time in many aspects: Brand-new characters without ties to any existing franchise? Check. An almost all-female team? Check. Super-powered individuals without skintight costumes or codenames (mostly)? Double check. Prominently featured gay and transgender characters? Yup.
Marvel and DC weren't publishing anything like RUNAWAYS at the time and haven't produced anything quite like it since.
While never a sales juggernaut, RUNAWAYS was (and still is) a critical darling. The series won the 2006 Harvey Award for Best Continuing or Limited Series and writer and co-creator Brian K. Vaughan won the 2005 Eisner Award for Best Writer.
This set represents of the best of the best RUNAWAYS comics that have been graded by CGC. All issues have been graded CGC 9.8; no eligible issues have been graded higher to date. This set took about one full year to complete and I sifted through an estimated 20 complete sets of all three volumes to cherry pick the best copies to submit for grading. I personally submitted all but four of the set's seventy-six issues. Some issues were tougher to find in NM/M condition than others, mostly due to production flaws. Volume 1 #10, Volume 2 #10, and Volume 3 #11 were very tough to find in high grade. MARVEL MUST HAVES: SENTINEL AND RUNAWAYS was no picnic either.
The descriptions of each issue include SPOILER-heavy summaries, so please keep that in mind if you haven't read the series yet. You've been warned! I added a little color to the descriptions in the form of fun facts relating to the contents of each issue. Finally, since back cover ads are lame and totally BORING, I included scans of interior pages from each issue as B-side images in the gallery. I think you'll agree that pretty pictures drawn by Adrian Alphona and Sara Pichelli beat ads for sneakers or milk any day of the week.
Re-reading the entire run of RUNAWAYS to create the content of this Registry set was like reconnecting with old friends; it reminded me why I love love LOVE this series and these characters as much as I do.
A lot of time, dedication, and resources went into the creation of this set. I hope you have just as much fun looking at it as I did making it!
