The Team sets out to find the Silver Surfer, who according to the Submariner, is due a good spanking. Nicodemus' Trojan Horse trick works on the Surfer (well, he IS from another planet), and the Surfer joins with the Defenders to defeat the Magician Calizumas.

Dr. Strange attempts, from the realm of the Calizuma, to free the Surfer from his earthly imprisonment, and instead transports the team to another dimension to a showdown with old whats-his-name; The Nameless One. The Nameless One’s plan for vengeance has apparently fallen into place! The team happens upon Barbara (last seen in Hulk #126) and rescues her from captivity. The Defenders combine their powers to ultimately defeat the Nameless One and return to Earth with Barbara.

Is this the Defenders or ‘Days of Our Lives’? A love smitten Hulk makes off with Barbara with the Defenders in hot pursuit. They are transported to another realm where they are imprisoned by the sorceress Cassiolena. Also imprisoned there is the Enchantress and the Black Knight. The Enchantress transforms Barbara into the VALKYRIE who aids in everyone’s escape. Trusting the Enchantress turns out not to be such a good idea, and our heroes battle and defeat her and the Executioner, returning home with Valkyrie and a now turned-to-stone, love smitten, Black Knight.

The Defenders are hardly a close knit group as things get dicey at the Strange Manor. Clea's message to the ‘armor clad’ Valkyrie is clear, "This place ain't big enough for the two of us." That sends Valkyrie off to seek advice from, of all people, the Hulk and Subby where they end up saving the world by destroying Yandroth's Doomsday Machine. Subby and Valkyrie head to the Strange Manor to clear things up.

Enter the Silver Surfer, channeller of the power cosmic, who finds Strange's manor surrounded by a powerful mystic cube. Inside it are the most powerful mage in the omniverse, the Prince of Atlantis, and our favorite enchanted goddess trapped by an evil mage leading an angry knife weilding hoard. Strange has cleverly magically sealed the mystic portals from supernatural incursion, conjuring a false sense of security because alas, he neglected one minor detail- he forgot to lock the doors! Well, the knife weilding mob storms the manor but proves no match for the power cosmic, a forgetful sorcerer supreme, goddess et al; and our heroes ultimately prevail. Thus the foundation of the team forms.
