Synopsis: The battered Kiden Nixon lays shackled to a table. This chapter of her story, however, begins two days earlier in Manhattan. After fishing a broken snow globe out of a dumpster as a gift for her roommate Bobby Soul, Kiden and Tatiana return to their apartment and interrupt Bobby trying to feed his catatonic kid brother, Lil’ Bro. Their old teacher Ms. Palmer stops by and implores them all to return to school, but they resist, instead opting to study from home. Later that day, Kiden goes to work at the café, where she receives the apparently undeliverable letter she sent to her estranged mother. Unbeknownst to her, someone films her from the nearby shadows. That night, as the four kids head to Ms. Palmer’s for dinner, Kiden receives a premonition from her deceased father, imploring her to run. She freezes up just as Bobby and Tatiana open Ms. Palmer’s door, revealing a trashed, bloody apartment and a photograph stuck to the wall by a knife through Kiden’s face.

Synopsis: Although Ms. Palmer’s apartment is splattered with blood, Kiden sincerely believes their former teacher is still alive. The kids leave, realizing the photo pinned to the wall means the kidnappers predicted their arrival, and upon returning home, discover the police outside their apartment. Someone is clearly framing them. Kiden sneaks inside, gathers some possessions, retrieves some planted evidence, and returns to her friends to discuss their next step. Bobby refuses to help Kiden find Ms. Palmer, but after a heart-to-heart over dinner, she and Tatiana convince him otherwise. He then reveals a clue he found in Ms. Palmer’s apartment: a ski cap belonging to an old associate of his. He takes them to the kidnapper’s seemingly vacant apartment. Tatiana, carrying Lil’ Bro, searches a bedroom, where they are ambushed by a hidden thug. After Lil’ Bro disarms the thug with his mutant power, Tatiana bites down on his hand and wriggles free. Unfortunately, his blood triggers her mutant ability, and after she physically transforms into her attacker, he shoots her at point-blank range.

Synopsis: Kiden and Bobby subdue Frankie, Tatiana’s shooter, but immediately following his interrogation, D’Sean returns home with his gang and opens fire on the intruders in his apartment. Fortunately, Kiden grabs on to each of her friends, and upon triggering her mutant ability, takes each of them into the paused world with her. They slip by the gang, as well as their bullets, and take the wounded Tatiana to the hospital. While the staff takes her into surgery, the news channel runs a story about Ms. Palmer’s disappearance that indicts Bobby, Kiden, and Tatiana as her kidnappers. Worse, after receiving a blood transfusion, Tatiana once again transforms, this time into a middle-aged white woman. Meanwhile, following some leads, Kiden, Bobby, and Lil’ Bro head to Empire State University where they dial a number Tatiana retrieved from her attacker’s mind. A tattooed man, seemingly expecting their call, approaches them and speaks ominously of their future. He knocks Kiden unconscious.
