Showcase #34 features the origin and first appearance of the Silver Age Atom, Ray Palmer. It also features the first appearance of Jean Loring.
We have long been in search of a high-grade Showcase #34. While we would like to find one of the three 9.4s, which top the census, none have been on the market since we started collecting this set. Our copy is a very clean 9.0, which we acquired in the September 2020 Pedigree Comics auction.
2022 Update: One of the Showcase #34 9.4s is currently listed for sale on multiple sites for $225,000 LOL. Obviously, we won’t be buying that one, nor will anyone else unless they have more money than sense. I would estimate it’s a $30-40k book at auction.

Issue #1 is, of course, Atom’s first appearance in his own book after three Showcase try-out issues. The book also features the introduction of the Plant Master. Our 9.4 unfortunately has Cr/OW pages, which seems to be rather commonplace in most high-grade examples of this issue we’ve seen. It’s also tied for second highest graded trailing a single 9.6. We acquired the book from an E-Bay auction on 7/23/2018.

Issue #3 features the Origin and first appearance of Chronos, as well as the first Time Pool story. it’s a particularly tough issue to find in high grade, as there just two 9.4s in the census and none higher. I have not seen either of the 9.4s since I have been collecting this title, although I believe that one of the 9.4s was auctioned off over 10 years ago and is now owned by a private collector in Europe. At any rate, this 9.2 just hit the market and, based on the cert numbers, came from the same collection as my #4 9.8. I acquired the two books together from the 12/7/2021 CL Auction.
