Thor no. 337: "Doom"
Publication date: August 2, 1983
Signed by Walt Simonson on 10/10/09, by Stan Lee on 11/23/09.
Census: As of 6/13/22 the census lists three copies of 337 in 9.9 and 1,513 copies of 337 in 9.8 (the latter up by around 200 since this year last time). One of the 9.9 copies is signed, I think by Stan only. Of the 9.8s, 208 are signed (up by 18). I've seen one or two of these with three signatures (Jim Shooter with Walt and Stan, I think, maybe with a remarque). Mad respect. There are 76 Canadian 9.8s, with 3 signed.

Synopsis for "Doom" (this and all subsequent synopses are borrowed from marvel.fandom.com)
In space, we see the core of an ancient galaxy explode. Amazingly, though, gigantic tongs grab the leftover starstuff, and an equally gigantic figure begins to mold it. In Grant Park in Chicago, Don Blake is out for a stroll, thinking about how sometimes he wishes he could set aside his godly heritage and be just a man, when he is struck in the back with a frisbee. Blake gives it back to John when he is grabbed by two men, who hustle him to a car and shove him in. Inside is Nick Fury, who tells Blake he needs his help, or more to the point, Thor's help. They arrive at the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier where Sitwell gives a briefing about the trouble they have. Using an advanced warp driven probe, they have discovered an alien ship. As the ship passes by a star, it flared to life and was sucked in by the ship, refueling it. The ship is now headed towards Earth at several times the speed of light. Thor agrees to help and begins his journey. In Asgard, Sif arrives to find Volstagg with Balder feasting. Balder is morose after his sojourn in Hela's realm and has visibly gained weight. He has sworn to never fight again. Sif was wanting company since Thor has forsaken her for Earth, but she will not find it here. She goes to Heimdall and asks him to find her a battle to ease her emptiness, but he cannot help her either. In space, Thor has met up with the ship, and as he closes in on it, it's automated weapons open fire. Thor destroys the gun battery and rips his way through the hull. Inside, he finds a large figure encased in crystal, that suddenly breaks free. In Asgard, Loki is bored when he hears a noise. Outside, he sees warriors engaged in a forbidden Troll hunt. The Troll is hiding when it sees a beautiful woman offering to help hide it when she gets close, she grabs it and hoists it up. Lorelei has won the hunt. Loki invites her back to his castle and she agrees. Back aboard the ship, the gigantic alien tosses Thor aside and introduces himself as Beta Ray Bill. Bill believes Thor is some sort of demon that has been harassing his people and plans on killing him. As they battle back and forth, Thor has dropped Mjolnir. Thor knows he must stop them and begins trying to tear the ship apart. Skuttlebutt sets for Earth to set down for repairs while Bill attacks anew. But before Thor can do anything else, he changes back to Blake, and Bill is upon him fast. Bill forms a stasis egg around himself to survive the crash, and the unconscious form of Blake is inside as well. Nick Fury arrives at the ship's crash site just seconds after impact. Bill looks for Thor's hammer to use as a weapon but finds only a stick. He strikes a wall in frustration and is transformed into an alien version of Thor. Outside, Bill throws the hammer and destroys one of the S.H.I.E.L.D. vehicles, and catches Mjolnir when it returns to him. Astonishingly, Bill is worthy! He is about to strike again when the skies open up, and an image of Odin appears. He mistakes Bill for Thor and takes him to Asgard. Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. start to move in, when Blake crawls out of Skuttlebutt, and realizes what has happened. The alien was worthy enough to wield Mjolnir, and Blake is stuck on Earth as a mortal.
Favorite line and some thoughts (see image no. 2): Bill, standing over the unconscious body of Blake: "I do not understand the demon's transformation...but it would be unwise to question a gift horse too closely."
It's difficult to do justice to how dramatic a break this issue was from what preceded it...apart from the obvious, the famous cover in which Bill, decked out in Thor gear, destroys the title's old logo, Walt summarily disposed of the Chicago storyline and signaled the development of a new psychological depth for characters like Sif and Balder. The visuals are, of course, amazing. The introduction of Loki’s mountaintop fortress, which resembles a Norwegian stave church, anticipates Walt’s transformation of Asgard into a place where one believes ancient Viking God’s might actually live (with all due respect to the traditional Nordic Dubai created by Kirby, which according to one bonus map even featured a shopping mall). All of this, and the rather on the nose Father and Son relationship signaled in the last panels (Odin has "forsaken" Thor, the outstretched arms of Don Blake yelling "Father") are in keeping with the more theological / mythological approach for which Simonson is famous. Indeed, Surtur, who was in many ways just another clowny villain prior to this issue, is presented as the ancient force of nature that he is in Norse mythology, one poised to play his traditional role in Ragnarok. And again, everything looks AMAZING. The dramatically foreshortened SHIELD helicarrier and Skutllebutt (the name, we will learn, of Bill's sentient ship) profit from Walt's earlier work on Star Wars, etc. Walt’s graphic style and inimitable linework is at full power.
For collectors, this is an interesting book where the "Newsstand" question is concerned. The bar code copies tend to command a higher price but, as is occasionally observed in online forums, they seem more numerous than the direct market copies. An ebay search for "Thor 337" (slabbed or unslabbed) on any given day will typically yield a larger number of slabbed bar code copies. All of this seems to confirm what Walt has always said about this book, i.e. that its popularity came as a surprise to the direct market retailers. Accustomed to poor Thor sales the comic shops hadn't placed big orders for 337 and were caught with their pants down. According to Walt (and others) the retailers raided all of the newsstand copies, which possibly represent a greater proportion of the overall print run. Fun fact: you can spot a copy on the wall in the comic book shop in 1987's The Lost Boys. Whether the copy shows a Spidey or a bar code is hard to tell. Maybe teen idol Corey Feldman knows.

Synopsis for “A Fool and His Hammer”:*
In space, we see the starstuff being forged. Back on Earth, Blake realizes that his father has left him and he is no longer Thor. Nick Fury finds him and tells him about Odin taking the alien to Asgard mistakenly. In Asgard, they are happy to see the warrior bearing Mjolnir until they realize that it's not Thor. Odin tells Beta Ray Bill that he wants answers and wants to know where his son is. Bill hurls Mjolnir at Odin, saying that he won it in combat. Odin simply grabs it out of the air and prevents it from returning to Bill. Odin senses that Bill is telling the truth when he states that he won it in fair combat. Odin encases Bill in a vessel of ethereal force until he can discern the truth. Odin looks to Earth and sees Blake there and transports him to Asgard, transforming him to Thor at the same time. Odin frees Bill, and Bill sees that they are not demons and agrees to talk with them. All three go to Hlidskjalf, and they tell Bill that none but they have ever lifted Mjolnir and they ask him for his tale. Elsewhere, Sif is strolling through the garden when she hears a familiar voice She turns the corner and sees Thor and Lorelei lying together kissing. Sif storms up and strikes them both to the ground, then storms off telling them they deserve each other. Lorelei tells him that if she knew it was that dangerous, she might not have taken part in the jest. Thor morphs into Loki and tells her that Sif will leave and that she will succeed where her sister, the Enchantress, has always failed. Back on Hlidskjalf, Bill tells them that his people lived in the heart of a galaxy, an ancient and noble race. Recently, though, the core of their galaxy exploded, destroying most of their civilization, and the survivors were forced to flee. Bill was chosen by their leaders to be their guardian and was merged with a bio-engineered hybrid of their fiercest predator. Thus was created a warrior of surpassing skill and strength. He was then given the warship Skuttlebutt, which became his companion and friend. Since they did not have enough food for all of the people, they were locked into cold sleep, and the ten thousand ships of their fleet began their journey to a new home. But shortly after they began, they were attacked by demons, flying from the fiery core and killed those they caught. The chase still goes on and Bill is glad to have found a weapon that may protect his people for all time. Odin tells Bill that the contest was not entirely fair in that Thor fought under a handicap of Odin's spell, and he never imagined that there would be another one that was worthy. Odin then tells them of his reason for calling Thor home. There are forces at work that he cannot see, and it's source is the galaxy that is Bill's home. But they have a more pressing problem, each has a claim on Mjolnir. They decide it will be a trial by combat, weaponless, and with only the power of their own right arms. Since this is such a high stake game, they combat will take place in Skartheim, and it will be to the death. Both warriors are instantly transported to the misbegotten realm, and the combat begins. Elsewhere in Asgard, Volstagg and Balder are walking and discussing Balder's recent attitudes towards life and death. Having spent time among those he has slain, Balder has forsworn combat forever. They are interrupted by Agnar, who insists on battling Balder. Balder dodges him easily and Volstagg blocks the way. Volstagg picks up Agnar and carries him off to a shady spot to tell the tale of Balder the Brave. Back in Skartheim, Bill and Thor battle back and forth, equally matched. They find themselves on a raft of obsidian on a river of lava, each having spent everything and knocked each other out. Bill, having been born in similar heat, revives first. He could leave Thor to go over the lavafall, but decides that the is too worthy to be allowed to die in such a way. Bill picks up Thor's body and tries to leap for the shore, only to be transported back to Asgard. Bill has once again, won the hammer Mjolnir.

Favorite line and some thoughts: “Let me begin. I am Odin, son of Bor, son of Buri, and lord of Asgard. This is my Son, Thor.” This sort of formal attention to lineage (I’m not certain we’ve heard Odin articulate his full heritage so clearly before) is another sign that we are dealing with an Asgard that, for lack of a better adjective, is more medieval than any we have encountered in this book before. The journey to rocky Hlidskjalf, high above the clouds, remains one of my favorite moments in Walt’s legendary run. Another reminder that with Walt’s Thor we are dealing with Norse mythology in a more serious manner than we have before.
The cover, or course, is Walt's homage to the great Jack Kirby's cover for Thor no. 126 (Thor vs. Hercules).

Synopsis for “Something Old, Something New”:*
After arriving back in Asgard and pronouncing his victory, Beta Ray Bill collapses. Odin declares that neither warrior will perish, and to take them both to the house of healing. The attendants are very curious about Bill, but Lorelei finds him repulsive. Her and Sif debate overlooks versus honor, until Odin arrives. Odin goes in to see Thor who feels disgraced before him. Thor announces he will renounce his godhood and leave Asgard forever. Odin tells him that he will have to speak with Bill, who is not happy with the outcome either. Odin then goes to speak with Bill, who wants to know is his claim on the hammer only until someone stronger comes along? He knows it was forged for Thor, but he needs it as well. Bill asks if there is a way out of this dilemma of honor and need. Odin tells him that in the past, the gods demanded a sacrifice for help, but Bill has already given him something precious - the life of his son. So Odin will grant what aid he can and bestow on Bill a gift, one that may destroy him. Later that evening, a rider crests the hill, through the pass of Ullthang, and into Nidavellir. Eitri recognizes Odin immediately and asks what the dwarves can do for the gods. Through the night, the two talk, and Eitri agrees to the task on one condition. Odin must send a woman to defeat their champion, only then will old wrongs be redressed. Back in Asgard, Thor and Bill discuss the outcome of their contest, when they see Sif in full armor, riding fast. When they ask a nurse about what's going on, she tells them that Sif rides out to fight a champion on behalf of them both and that she may never return. On the ride, Sif recalls her meeting with Odin and her own secret reason for accepting Odin's request. She is intrigued by Bill and wants to find favor in his eyes. Suddenly, the dwarves champion ambushes Sif. She fights back, but the dwarf is larger than she is. Elsewhere, Volstagg is sitting on Agnar, telling him of the trials of Balder. Of how Loki tricked Hoder into killing Balder, and how he traveled through Hela's domain. Someplace else, the gigantic figure continues its forging, the forging of a great sword. In Quebec, Rene Baroque laments buying the food processor when Fafnir arrives and destroys the lighthouse with him in it. Back in Nidavellir, Sif overcomes Throgg and knocks him unconscious. Eitri arrives and is happy that Sif defeated Throgg. He tells her that Throgg has been using his freakish size to bully the dwarves. After having been beaten by a woman, he won't show his face for a long time. Eitri then tells the rest of the dwarves to stoke the furnaces, it's time to work! After Sif's return to Asgard, she speaks with Bill. He tells her that he longs to return to his people, his duty lies with them. Sif wants to know if he will return to Asgard, but Bill tells her no. Asgard reminds him of everything he gave up when he was remade, he has no humanity left...for anyone. In Nidavellir, Odin, Sif, Thor, and Bill are present while the dwarves work a forging unlike since the beginning of time. When the time is right, Odin unleashes the full force of his magic into the mold, and Bill reaches in. When he pulls out the hammer, he changes once more into Beta Ray Thor! Odin asks Bill if he accepts this great responsibility, and he does with all his heart. Odin names the hammer Stormbreaker and then returns Mjolnir to Thor, which is his alone. Odin then tells Bill that he must hurry, the demons are almost upon his people. Thor decides to go with Bill to help him and calls Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder to help carry them quickly. Sif tells them that she is coming with them, and the three of them race for the stars.
*Synopsis from marvel.fandom.com
Favorite line and some thoughts: It’s a tie between Bill and Thor.
Bill: “Look at me, Lady Sif. My brothers are the beasts of the forests, my sisters the machines that drive the great starships.”
In rereading this issue I was struck by the moment when Bill essentially refuses Sif’s sympathies. The reason Bill was so compelling lay in his monstrous appearance. How could this horse-faced alien be as worthy as Thor? With Beta Ray Bill, Walt challenged our expectations and perhaps even our prejudices. He showed us that appearances are deceiving and that heroes come in all shapes and sizes. Unlike Lorelei, Sif (who kicks some serious butt in this issue and the next) could care less about Bill’s outward appearance.
Thor: “Up, Toothgnasher! Up, Toothgrinder! Pull for the stars! The foe awaits and joyous battle is before us!”
I had to give Thor some love at this point. This is the first time we’ve seen Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder as drawn by Walt (they had a much earlier, anecdotal appearance in the rather decent Thor annual no. 5, written by Steve Englehart). And they are AWESOME. Only Walt could take the ludicrous notion of Marvel’s Thor driving goats through the stars and make it work. Thor’s exhortation is clearly a nod to Clement Clark Moore’s A Visit from St. Nicholas. The names of Santa’s reindeer “Donder and Blitzen” derive from the Dutch for “Thunder” and “Lightning.” “Donder,” of course, is etymologically related to the name of Thor (“Donar”) in Old High German. Much as in English we have “Thursday” (Thor’s day) the German is still Donnerstag. Stimmt, baby.
The sweet safety goggles that Odin, Thor, Bill, and Sif wear as Stormbreaker is forged are a call back to Journey into Mystery 120 (1965), when for the first time Thor reforged a broken Mjolnir. He did it in a logical place for that day and age: Pittsburgh.
Awesome to have Walt’s remarque on this issue. Bill was the obvious choice. Grateful to Walt and CGC for making it happen.

Synopsis for “Though Hel Should Bar the Way”:*
Thor, Beta Ray Bill, and Sif finally catch up to the last ship of Bill's fleet, only to find it destroyed by the demons. They slay the demons on that one ship, and Sif leaps out. She will stay and try to defend the rest of the ships while Thor and Bill fly on to destroy the source of the demons. They finally reach the galactic core and discover not stars but a portal, out of which flows countless demons. On the other side of the portal, the giant is continuing it's forging, while, on Earth, creatures begin to awaken. Meanwhile, Sif is about to be overrun by demons when massive blasts destroy the immediate horde. Sif turns to find a warship, which she surmises is Skuttlebutt. Skuttlebutt confirms this and they team together to try and lead the demons from the fleet. Back in Asgard, Volstagg continues telling Agnar of Balder's journey through Niffleheim. Seeing Nidhogg consuming the dead, and meeting the warriors that he himself sent there, changing him forever. Volstagg goes on to tell him that both he and Thor are warriors, and might understand and forgive Agnar if he were to bring harm to Balder. After finally letting him up, Agnar turns and sees Hogun standing there. Volstagg tells him that Hogun would never forget, or forgive. Back in space, at the portal, Thor has a plan. With him on one side and Bill on the other, they both throw their respective hammers to collide within the portal, destroying it. Back aboard Skuttlebutt, the ship is about to self-destruct, taking the demons with them, when they simply vanish. As Sif and Skuttlebutt wait for Thor and Bill's return, Sif asks to know all about Bill. Back on Earth, Lorelei asks Loki what he is getting out of their game, to which Loki replies that it will amuse him. Bill, Sif, Thor, and Skuttlebutt return to Asgard with the victory and are greeted with cheers. Bill and Thor clean up and change, and discuss Bill's melancholy. Bill tells Thor that though he knows he must return to his people, he is loathed to leave Asgard. He has found companionship here, and even the touch of a woman's hand while his own people can barely look at him. Elsewhere, Odin has called for Sif and wants to discuss Bill. Sif tells Odin that Skuttlebutt revealed the entire truth to her. Even though his story was true, it was not complete. How he won over thousands of others in grueling tests of power and endurance. Then came the psychological tests that left most of them dead or insane. Then the surgical alterations, including excruciating pain, out of which only Bill survived. And the change is irreversible, with his own people unable to even look at him. At the feast, Odin honors both heroes with a gift. They both raise their hammers and Odin unleashes vast energy into them both. Bill states that he feels no different, but Odin states he had an old enchantment that has outlived its usefulness. He strikes Stormbreaker on the ground, and Bill is transformed into his original, unaltered self, before the test and surgeries. The next morning, after the celebrations have died down, Sif decides she will go with Bill on his quest, to help regain her senses, and Odin transports them both aboard Skuttlebutt. Back on Earth, the tanker Astraglia is broken in two by a gigantic clawed hand rising from the sea. The gigantic dragon roars to the heavens above, to Odin, that he has returned and Thor's life is forfeited.
*Synopsis from marvel.fandom.com
Favorite line and some thoughts: An exhausted but far from defeated Sif, having already done some serious damage, facing down a literal wave of demons: “Come Demons! Who will the first to taste this sweet steel?” Skuttlebutt arrives just in the nick of the time and the duo manages to protect Bill’s fleet long enough for Thor and Bill to destroy the portal to that ominous place “beyond the fields we know.” One of Sif’s finest moments in Walt’s run.
Walt’s trademark writhing demon waves (or a version thereof) will show up again during his collaboration with Louise on the X-Factor issues of the "Inferno" crossover. Now that I think about it, X-Factor’s sentient celestial spaceship is likewise very similar to Skuttlebutt.
Thor 337–340 have been reprinted several times, most recently in volume one of the IDW “Artist’s Edition” series dedicated to Walt’s Thor run. I believe that volume (which is now in a second printing) also contains a reproduction of the original cover Walt did for a trade paperback of the same issues titled “The Ballad of Beta Ray Bill.” That cover (it’s a wraparound) shows Bill and Sif atop Skuttlebutt and Thor driving his goats. It’s dope. Oh yeah, there's also that "Marvel Visionaries" volume that came sealed with Walt's signature inside, the cover for which Walt newly designed to act as a bookend with Thor 382, the last issue in the run. You can still find those on ebay from time to time. Pretty cool.
Notice how Walt consciously chose to show Odin’s empty eye socket in this issue…it’s a reminder that he nonetheless “sees” in a way that everyone else cannot, a hint that he somehow knew the good that what would come from the arrival of Beta Ray Bill.

Synopsis for “The Past is a Bucket of Ashes”:*
Thor arrives at Avengers Mansion, intent on finding new residence on Earth since Don Blake no longer exists. He steps inside and is transported to Battleworld. Meanwhile, Lorelei gets off the subway in a section where even the cops don't go. She is accosted by two thugs but mesmerizes them into fighting each other. She goes deeper and deeper until she comes to an abandoned station. There she finds the dragon, Fafnir and tries to mesmerize him into doing her bidding. But the power of the dragon is not only of flame, but of persuasion and mesmerizes her instead. Thor heads to S.H.I.E.L.D. HQ to ask for Nick Fury's help in setting up a new civilian identity. Nick promises to do what he can and sends Thor with Marco. A half hour later, in walks Thor wearing jeans, a t-shirt, with his hair in a ponytail. Nick tells him that even S.H.I.E.L.D. can't find anything in Manhattan and he'll have to settle for Brooklyn. But he's more concerned about people still recognizing his physique. Nick gets an idea and hands, Thor, a pair of glasses. Nick takes Thor to a press conference to test his disguise. On the way out, Thor accidentally knocks Clark down. Clark thinks he might recognize Thor but then dismisses it. In Asgard, below Hlidskjalf, Odin is busy casting Runes. Odin carves Runes into the claws of Hugin and Munin so that they may travel beyond any barrier. He wants them to travel to the demons domain and discover the secret of their origin. On a Manhattan construction site, Sigurd Jarlson is reporting for his first day of work at Jerry Sapristi's office. They hear a scream and race outside to see a girl hanging from a construction crane. Sigurd races up the crane to rescue her when the ground begins to shake and the crane starts to topple. Sigurd manages to rescue her when the source of the trembling is revealed - Fafnir. Fafnir recognizes Thor, with Lorelei as the bait, and lashes out with his tail, smashing the building. Elsewhere, the gigantic figure that is forging summons the Dark Elf to seek out the second son of Odin. As Sigurd is protecting Lorelei from the falling debris, he hears someone calling his name in the ancient tongue of the Norsemen, but then it's gone. Thor strikes Mjolnir on the ground and it changes his raiment, and then he begins attacking Fafnir. Fafnir revels in his evil and seeks to slay Thor for old wrongs. Back in Asgard, Volstagg is searching for Balder but finds his home empty. Balder has left for the wilderness but left his pantry well stocked to distract Volstagg from finding and stopping him. Later, as Balder sits by his fire, he is unaware that he is observed by Karnilla and Haag. Karnilla orders that there is to be no harm done to Balder while he is in her kingdom. Back at the battle, Fafnir's flame has set some debris on fire. Thor calls down the rain to quench the blaze, and Fafnir mistakenly believes that Thor will trap him again as he did before, and leaves. Thor starts to follow but is stopped by the raging river Fafnir unleashed in his tunneling. In Asgard, Loki is enjoying the game he is playing between Thor, Fafnir, and Lorelei. Thor changes back to Sigurd and checks on the woman he rescued. She feels better in his arms and falls asleep. He then hears the same voice calling his name again in the language of old and is determined to find its source.
*Synopsis from marvel.fandom.com
Favorite line and some thoughts: Nick Fury, lending Thor some specs to complete his new secret identity, “Sigurd Jarlson”: “Here! Put these cheaters on! They always worked for that other guy!”
My pic this time doesn't show the quoted text but what follows, when "Sigurd" literally bumps into "that other guy" at a press conference. Walt’s really having a good laugh here.
The splash that opens this issue, with Thor returned to the Manhattan skyline after his rather weird sojourn in Chicago, is beautiful and somewhat bittersweet. The Twin Towers get me every time I see them in pre-2001 comics.
A deep pull here with the full return of Fafnir, who hadn’t been seen since Thor #134. I reckon Walt wanted to put his own spin on the dragon, another character Stan and Jack pulled from Norse mythology. The coolest scene in this issue, however, is Odin etching runes into the claws of Hugin and Munin. Nowadays Thor scribes take it for granted that Odin’s ravens can zoom around the universe / reality at will, but the technical details of this ability we owe to Walt.

Synopsis for “The Last Viking”:*
In Asgard, Odin is considering the arrival of the last Viking. Back on Earth, Sigurd and Jerry are surveying the destruction when Sigurd is told that the girl he rescued wants to thank him before she is taken to the hospital. She makes it very clear that she is attracted to him and wants to thank him properly when she gets out. As the ambulance drives off, one man notes that he didn't even get her name. Sigurd again hears someone calling his name in the language of old and decides to solve the mystery once and for all, he changes to Thor and flies off. Elsewhere, the gigantic figure senses the arrival of Hugin and Munin and strikes the first blow against the power of Asgard. Back on Earth, Thor has followed the voice to Antarctica. He discovers a valley teeming with life where the volcanic heat has made it cool, yet quite comfortable. It is here that Thor discovers a village, not unlike the towns the ancient Vikings lived in. He calls about but finds several of the huts empty and falling into disrepair. He rounds a corner and finds a Viking graveyard filled with the stone ships. They all point to an entrance into the side of a mountain, and Thor enters to investigate. After entering the cavern, a giant door slams shut and hundreds of spears are launched all right at Thor. In Asgard, Balder sits in the wilderness by a fire and calls to the darkness, telling the stranger to come forth. The cloaked figure comes forth to join him and it is revealed to be Karnilla. Balder tells her that what he has seen in Hel dogs him even in the empty wilderness. She tells him that he cannot carry this weight forever. She gets up to leave, telling him that her men have left provisions for him behind the rocks. And if he tires of the outland, she will offer him the hospitality of her home. Back in Antarctica, Thor smashes the spears, only to encounter other traps within the cave. After going through them all, Thor meets a gigantic warrior, that hurls a spear at Thor. he dodges the spear and swings at the warrior, knocking his helmet loose. In another cavern, beneath NYC, Fafnir nurses his hatred of Thor and realizes that Thor couldn't hurt him. Fafnir emerges near the South Bronx, screaming for Thor. And in a penthouse overlooking Central Park, Lorelei is preparing a special brew of golden mead just for Thor. Back in the cavern, Thor discovers that the warrior is really an old man, that tells Thor not to spare him and to finish the job. Thor tells him that he won't slay an ancient and carries him outside. Thor gets him outside and removes the armor and asks who he is. He tells Thor that his name is Eilif the Lost and that his father's fathers founded the valley long ago, and could not get back out. Eilif tells him that the labyrinth was the way to test themselves and become warriors since they had no enemies. He wanted to trap Thor, whose temper is legendary and win his way through to Valhalla. But he failed and is content to die the straw death having lived to see the Mighty Thor himself. Thor tells him that his fate no longer rests within himself. That he did not come all this way to discover a dotard seeking Valhalla through deception. The Gods of the icy north have answered Eilif's call and now his life belongs to Thor.

“It was after the defeat of King Harald Hardrada in the year 1066 by Christian reckoning.”– Eilif the Lost
Most historians will tell you that, had Harold Godwinson not had to march north to face King Harald Hardrada of Norway immediately prior to his battlefield encounter with Duke William of Normandy, the famous Battle of Hastings (1066) would have turned out very differently. By the time the Anglo-Saxon army met the Normans they were diminished from the earlier battle. Eilif’s ancestors, for their part, managed to escape and make it to Antarctica, where Walt had settled them in an environment somewhat reminiscent of the Savage Land.
It’s cool that Thor can hear Eilif calling / praying to him like the Vikings of old did.
The obstacle course that Eilif and his people created to trap a god reminds me a bit of Raiders of the Lost Ark.
I believe this is the first issue that Terry Austin inked and Christie Scheele colored; Walt was doing his own inks up until this point and the colors were by Roussos. Scheele is now an independent professional painter.
John Workman's signature is a must for a true Simonson fan. His lettering has an almost runic quality to it. He is also responsible for the explosive sound effects. Workman's contributions fit seamlessly with Walt's style. It's no wonder they've continued to collaborate throughout the years.

Synopsis for “The Last Viking”:*
Fafnir is in New York on a rampage, screaming for the Son of Odin, and begins destroying buildings. Elsewhere, Lorelei is wondering where Thor is. But Thor is unaware of what's going on because he's in Antarctica with Eilif. Thor tells him that he is proud of his reckless courage, but the granting of Valhalla is beyond him. Only Odin and the Valkyries can decide who sits in that realm. But Thor tells him that for old times sake, he will take Eilif's fate in his hands. For Fafnir awaits him in New York and he would take Eilif with him. Thor then calls to Odin to grant him a sign that Eilif be his shield bearer. After half an hour, out of nowhere, flies Cloud rider's and Thor's own chariot pulled by Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder. In Asgard, Karnilla is furious at what Loki has done to Balder. Haag has put Balder in the room next to Karnilla's own. Back in Antarctica, Eilif is overcome by events and begins to lose his courage. Thor rails at him and calls for the warrior that lifted his weapon against the mightiest fighter in Asgard, and dared test the mettle of the Mighty Thor. Rallied, Eilif rises and touches Mjolnir, and feels the fire of youth coursing through is limbs. They mount up and begin to ride, but before they leave, they discover an old man that greets them and blesses Eilif's spear and as they fly off, Eilif looks gain and the old grey-bearded man has vanished. Elsewhere, beyond the fields we know, and endless host chants as the giant figure finishes the sword - now named Twilight. In the Bronx, Fafnir has grown tired of waiting and begins the serious destruction of the city. Eilif and Thor arrive just in time and Thor's hammer opens the battle. Fafnir strikes back with tail and flame, and the battle truly begins. In Asgard, Heimdall sees the stars themselves blotted out, and within the darkness, Munin races for his life. He falls to the bridge as the inky darkness races by and is gone. Back in the Bronx, Thor lands a blow that is felt in Pennsylvania, but to no avail. Fafnir strikes again at Eilif, and unhorsing him, Eilif falls into a building below. Thor's concern causes him to be distracted, allowing Fafnir to land a tremendous blow. Eilif comes to and realizes that Thor must be hurt because the energy of youth is leaving him. Summoning his courage, Eilif leaps down below him and drives his spear into the dragon. Thor, seeing that the spear has penetrated the dragon's hide, uses all his strength to drive the spear deep into Fafnir, killing him. Thor then rushes to Eilif's side and discovers that his companion and shield bearer is gone. Thor begins to demolish some remaining building, and using the rubble, builds a funeral pyre. Thor then lifts Fafnir's corpse and puts it at Eilif's feet, as the soldiers look on. Thor then summons a storm and causes it to strike, and fire the holy mound. No longer Eilif the Lost, but Eilif the Dragonslayer. Out of the sky, fantastical horsed figures fly to collect the fallen hero, as father Odin looks on to welcome the last Viking. Back in his apartment, Sigurd broods over his missing friends, when a knock on the door rouses him. It's Lorelei, in disguise as Melodi, tells him that she wanted to thank him for saving her life.

"No longer Eilif the lost, but Eilif the dragonslayer!" -Thor, in his eulogy for the fallen Eilif.
In rereading the saga of Eilif the lost, I'm struck by how well the battle with the dragon Fafnir complements and anticipates Thor's encounter with another legendary serpent, Fin Fang Foom, near to the end of Walt's run (issues 379 & 380). There, it turns out that Fin Fang Foom is in fact another serpent of legend, Jormungand, in disguise. In any event, the Fafnir and Fin Fang Foom / Jormungand dragon battles bookend either end of the run in a rather pleasing symmetrical fashion. I wonder if that was Walt's intention.

Synopsis for “Whatever happened to Balder the Brave?”:*
To Nornkeep has come the wolf Geri, on a mission for Odin, and no barrier or man can stand in his way. Geri has come to summon Balder home.
In Asgard, Odin broods upon his throne until Frigga enters to try to ease his heavy heart. Odin tells Frigga that when he returned from Midgard the eve before, he found Heimdall waiting on him. Heimdall took Odin to his home beside the bridge where Munin lay. Odin and Munin spoke for a time until Odin learned what he needed to know. Balder arrives before Odin and learns the mission he would be sent upon. Balder must deliver a letter to Loki, he who is responsible for Balder's death and sojourn through Hel. Odin wants only Balder as his messenger because even Loki acknowledges that the word of Balder is the very measure of truth. Balder agrees on the condition that he will not raise a sword nor kill a soul.
In Bay Bridge Brooklyn, Sigurd is entertaining Melodi, by receiving a backrub from her. As she works on him, she offers him some of her golden mead, only to find he's fallen asleep. She's amused since she fell asleep on him the first time they met. She leaves, and leaves him a note that she wants to cook dinner for him next weekend.
In Asgard, Balder and Silverhoof ride for Loki's castle past the Living Landslide, through the Forbidden Forest, and across the Deadly Desert, until they reach the final path to the castle. As he begins the trail, he is suddenly attacked by trolls until he realizes that they're not trolls, but demons of the flame.
Elsewhere, the gigantic figure tempers the sword Twilight in a lake of molten lava.
Inside Loki's castle, Balder finds himself bound and brought before Loki and his guest — Malekith. Malekith orders his demons to kill Balder while he and Loki discuss business. Balder manages to slip his bonds and dodges the demons swords and spears, until he no longer has a choice and reaches for a sword.
Back on Earth at the construction site, Sigurd is working on cleaning up the rubble. Jerry shows up and tells him to put on a hardhat since the insurance people are about. Sigurd leaps off to get one, and Jerry is now convinced that Sigurd is an honest to god superhero — Spider-Man.
Back in Asgard, Balder begs the demons to let him pass, but they draw first blood, and Balder is forced to fight back in order to complete his mission. Balder gets past the demons and bursts through the doors to Loki and Malekith. Balder lunges at Malekith, but he fades away into the shadows. Balder then hands Loki the letter from Odin, completing his task. But Loki just tosses it away unread, for he has already accepted Malekith's offer. Enraged at being forced to break his oath to not kill, Balder swings the sword one last time, taking Loki's head.
At Nornkeep, Karnilla is frustrated at not being able to see what's going on inside Loki's castle when the alarm sounds. On their mystic screen, they see the image of Balder riding fast with the look of the damned on his face. Balder and Silverhoof race off into the desert to lose himself forever.
Back in Loki's castle, Loki's body still stands where it was, until it slowly reaches down and picks up the head, putting it back on. Loki had enjoyed the jest at Balder's expense, declaring it well worth the price of a stiff neck. For after all, the first thing a sorcerer of quality learns is to make himself as difficult to kill as possible.

Favorite line and some thoughts:
This issue is among my favorites in the run. Walt's Odin, like Stan and Jack's, cuts a massive, imposing figure, but he always struck me as more given to introspection and less to anger. He's really only around for the first third of the run, but during that time we learn about his ancient history with Surtur and how his brothers Vili and Ve met their death at the hands of the fire demon. Odin tells this tale right before Surtur pierces the veil of Midgard, further upping the ante of the epic battle about to unfold in New York and Asgard. So it was an obvious choice to ask Walt for an Odin remarque, and I couldn't be happier with this little gem. How Walt was able to create these diminutive portraits with only a few strokes of a marker is beyond me.
