"Holocaust". Having been transformed into the Mayan god Kukulcan, El Tigre no longer feels bound to the promises he made to his servants and, after knocking them out, creates a sphere of solar energy around himself, that transports him back to his former home of San Rico in Central America. Once there, he uncovers a huge Serpent totem with the Solar Stone on top of it, the source of his powers. Using it's immense power, he recreates the Mayan City and transforms the locals into the new citizens of his recreated Mayan empire. After learning of the legends about the enchanted, but cursed power pendant, Xavier and the four male X-Men depart to San Rico to face off against Kukulcan. After fighting off the local wildlife and brainwashed townsfolk, the X-Men battle Kukulcan directly. During the battle, the Beast realizes the Serpent Totem’s draws it's power from the sun and tells Iceman to encase it in a block of ice. Even with the totem covered in ice, the Mayan god outmaneuvers the X-Men causing Cyclops to accidentally blast the Angel out of the sky. Near exhaustion and with his last iota of strength, Kukulcan tries to shake Iceman of his scared totem but creates an earthquake instead, burying both the totem and the recreated Mayan city. Kukulcan reverts back to El Tigre and is easily caught, while the critically wounded Angel accuses Scott of having attacked him on purpose to have Jean for himself. Meanwhile, at Metro College in New York, the redhead at the heart of this triangle runs into a problem of her own, as one of her fellow students is none other than Calvin Rankin, formerly known as Mimic.

"We Must Destroy the Cobalt Man". Following their battle with the Warlock, Professor X schedules some off time for his students but Scott is reluctant, volunteering to help Xavier with his experiments. The Professor, however , asks him to return some books to Jean at Metro College, hoping they will finally open up to each other about their feelings. Warren, also vying for Jean’s affections, offers Scott a ride and says they should make Jean decide between the two of them today. To their dismay when they arrive, Jean is in the company of Ted and Ralph Roberts, two very competitive brothers. Ralph, a successful scientist, gives them a tour of his cobalt research company but Warren declines, tired of the competition, and heads off to a nightclub where he meets up with his childhood friend Candy Southern. At the research lab, Ralph shows off his newest invention a cobalt armor based on Tony Stark’s Iron Man designs. He puts the armor on in a continuing effort to impress Jean but, suddenly, a bump on the head Ralph suffered earlier in the day causes Ralph’s personality to change. Calling himself the Cobalt Man, Ralph attacks Scott and Jean. Ted tries to convince him to stop but to no avail. Ralph’s new personality sees Iron man as a traitor and leaves to hunt him down. Burying the two X-men in debris, Cobalt Man heads off to Stark Enterprises. Marvel Girl and Cyclops contact Xavier who rounds up the other X-men and go to face-off the Cobalt man. With teamwork, the X-men defeat the Cobalt Man and bring Ralph back to his senses. Unfortunately, during the fracas, Ted figured Jean’s secret identity. 1st appearance of Candy Southern and the Cobalt Man (Ralph Roberts).

"The Torch is passed" is the title for this issue and indeed the torch of leadership is passed from the now deceased Professor Xavier to Scott Summers aka Cyclops. But the team does not have long to mourn before their arch-nemesis Magneto returns to torment them along with Toad and his children Scarlett Witch and Quicksilver. Without Xavier’s guidance, Magneto easily defeats them. The second story highlights Cyclops’ powers and his early adventures. This is one of my favorite SA X-Men covers.
