Set Description
THE RAVEN (Australian comic series) was created by Paul Wheelahan and published by Young's Merchandising 1957.
Drawn by Artist John Dixon who was also the artist of the Australian comic series 'The Adventures of CATMAN'.
The Raven was the Seventh Earl of Ravenscourt, an innocent man falsely framed for theft by his villainous brother Sebastion, and sent to Dartmoor Prison. He escaped, and vowed that he would always help any other innocents should they be likewise wrongly imprisoned. As The Raven, he hides out in the abandoned Ravencourt Manor, kept company only by a lone bird, his namesake. All 10 issues printed in 1957.
In the first issue, there is this dedication:
"This is the story of THE RAVEN ...... It is a strange ..... even fantastic tale of the man who was once the Seventh Earl of Ravenscourt ....... How he was wrenched from a luxurious ordered existence and plunged into an eerie adventure that changed his whole way of life.
He entered this chapter of violence, a sheltered, wealthy aristocrat, and emerged as a ruthless, dedicated enemy of evil, simply known as ...... THE RAVEN."
In the 1st Edition of Down Under Comics, 1964, by John Ryan, the author made the following comment: "CATMAN" and "The RAVEN" seem to be the best Australian heroes, owing to the superior artwork and stories".
