Set Description
The CGC Signature Series, allows for us to express our fandom in many different ways. It expresses who you are in regards to likes and interests. For me, comics were not always easy to come by growing up. We lived in the middle of nowhere where the nearest place to buy comics was a half hour drive each way to a local Eckard Drug Store or and hour and fifteen minutes each way to a Shoprite. Choices were limited and we didn't always make it in time for each monthly issue but that was okay, they had my favorite hero Scooby Doo!

Yes, I consider Scooby to be a hero. Scooby can be seen as a role model leading the way to face your own fears. Scooby has shown loyalty in overcoming fear to help his friends time and time again, especially when he had to pluck up the courage to go after his crazy nephew Scrappy time after time after time.

Scooby Doo came out in 1969 in Season one and in this collector's humble opinion became the best Hannah Barbera cartoon series. Many of the next few cartoon series they tried to copy the success of the Scooby model. A group of teenagers or kids with a lovable character type mascot go around solving mysteries.
- Josie and the Pussycats
- Josie and the Pussycats in Outerspace
- The Funky Phantom
- The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan
- Butch Cassidy
- Goober and the Ghost Chasers
- Speed Buggy
- Superfriends (Marvin the Dog)
- Clue Club
- Jabberjaw
- Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels
- The Buford Files
- The New Shmoo

Each generation in the following years has had their own version of Scooby Doo. Ask any child who Jabberjaw is they will look at you oddly ask if they have heard of Scooby Doo, you will usually get a smile.

Along the way in this collection, there have been many a time in which a artist has drawn Scooby for the very first time. Many have laughed upon request when I explained that I like having an artist match my favorite character to a character they are known drawing for. It all started off with the late Allen Bellman facilitated through Dan Partouch at One Stop Comic Shop when I discovered the world of CGC Signature Series.

While this set will not appear in alphabetical order by comic title or number, it will go in date order for which the sketches were collected and if any assistance was gathered on the hunt. Many of these would not be possible without the help of CGC Facilitators.

Even though I do own remarques of Scooby and Shaggy on various slabs, this set will only include true sketches related to the Scooby Doo Universe.

Scooby as Green Lantern: Joe Staton @ Baltimore 2015 1st Convention Commission through Dan Partouche Green Lantern 13 Signature 9.8

Signed & Sketched by Joe Staton on 8/21/15 Baltimore Comic Con 2015. Thank You One Stop Comic Shop for setting up this commission.

This was submitted by Dan at One Stop Comic Shop and facilitated on my behalf. How I wish the old days of a $80 Joe Staton full body sketch still existed but times do change. Dan had done a couple different Scooby related sketches for me in a short range of time. CGC had accidentally changed the date of this one to reflect one of the other conventions. As at the time it was such a long wait I didn't wan't to (nor did I know back then) you could send back for mechanical error.

So this may be dated in August of 2015, it was really October of 2015.The grade date for this piece by CGC was, 12/08/15.

Scooby Teaming-up with Fabian Gray: Lauren Affe & signed Frank Barbiere 6/18/16 Five Ghosts 13 Signature 9.8 Another Dan Partouche assisted Scooby mashup from one of his conventions. Since I used at the time so many Five Ghosts blanks, I had to have the artist on Five Ghosts do a Fabian Gray sketch with Scooby. Also signed by Frank Barbiere one of the writers. If only Chris Mooneyham was there to add to the sketch.

Had to have it slabbed a second time as the initial notes used to say signed by Lauren Affe and forgot the sketch part. Always debated whether or not to have Steve Lydic color it.

My idea many years ago was to have Scooby Doo reading a Mad Magazine. Dan Partouche had the idea of making it an infinity cover and talked to Joe about it who loved the idea. After seeing the finished product, I loved it so much that I got Joe Staton over the span of many years to do each of the gang to do on. Original ID #1424159003

Scooby Doo Infinity Gauntlet @ Heroes 6/17/18 + Lydic Colors 5/2/20 + George Perez signed 5/10/20 The Marvels Project 1 Signature 9.8 The concept and idea for this commission was a four year adventure. My first ever two day convention pass (I usually only do one day shows for traveling logistics as I almost always drive straight in and out same day the record is almost 8 hours of driving in one day.)

In 2017 I had that two day pass and was determined to have George Perez sketch a Scooby Doo wearing the Infinity Gauntlet as it would fit into my mix of having an artist draw something they are familiar with combined with Scooby. So I arrived at East Coast Comic Con determined to wait all day in line to find out that George had unfortunately had a heart attack that morning.

He retired and did very few shows past that time so I decided to try Joe Staton's hand at Scooby with the Infinity Gauntlet. This is the story of how I met Rich Henn. I was attending a small New Jersey Show in 2018 called Philipsburg Comic Con which is run by Philipsburg High School's art department and artist give back to the community.

Why did I first go to this show? You guessed it, Joe Staton was in attendance. Back then I didn't know about Rich Henn and Joe was doing at this time reduced rates so I did a sketch cover of Scooby as E-Man. Figuring I might submit it with the other guys or get it green labeled. Joe surprised me and did it with Scooby flying across both the front and back cover so I decided to just frame it perhaps after having E-man creditors sign and having Steve Lydic color it. Joe asked if I wanted it personalized which he has never asked me previously and I figured as it would be framed, this would be the one sketch from Joe with my name on it.

Anyway, we are getting away from the Gauntlet! So at this show there was a gray haired man talking to a comic artist with a set of two short boxes on a handcart. He and the artist appeared to be good friends or at least knew each other and the customer was talking about how much cash he had at the show when the artist asked and I had the sense then that the guy was either an ultimate comic fan with a CEO big business job or a facilitator. I always feel awkward asking strangers so I bit my tongue.

Fast forward two days and I found out my usual facilitator wasn't attending Heroes so I went on the boards for the first time and wouldn't you know, the gray haired man was a facilitator!!! He agreed to get Joe to do the sketch for me at Heroes and it took a long time for CGC to have it graded but alas it was mine. So fast forward to George Perez's last show and the last East Coast Comic Con show as COVID would destroy the giant and my favorite show.

I brought my book slabbed and was going to get is signed by the whole Gauntlet crew. They had a system though of certain times of the signings and cutting off on how many could get in line. I was always the last one so I never got George to sign it.

Then the pandemic hit and I figured it would never happen! Then George did a few private sigings during COVID. I had Dan at One Stop Comic Shop use his colorist Steve Lydic color the sketch and talks with George's manager ended up with my one George Perez signed book and one of my all-time top 5 sketch covers.

Thank you Rich Henn and Dan Partouche. Rest In Peace George Perez.

Signed and sketch by Joe Staton on 6/17/18 @ Heroes Convention, Signed and Colored by Steve Lydic on 5/2/20, Signed by George Perez on 5/10/20.

Scooby Unmasking Kilowog: Joe Staton @ Gardenstate 6/29/19 Green Lantern 13 Signature 9.8 One of my Joe Staton goals, is to have a Scooby with characters that he either created or worked on mashed up together. I was able to do so at Garden State in which I had Joe have Scooby attempt to unmask Kilowog whom he created in Green Lantern #201 with Steve Englehart as the writer.

Garden State Comic Con 2019. Joe Staton double bust sketch. Scooby Doo attempting to unmask Kilowog. Facilitated through Agents of Slab. This was my first time branching out with a CGC facilitator that wasn't One Stop Comic Shop and Coach Dino is one of the nicest people to deal with. He is now the usual facilitator at the Winter and Summer shows so I don't have to worry about having unverified sketch covers as these are two staple shows for me.

More Joe Staton sketches exist in my collection, but for a couple year span, CBCS was facilitating this show so if you wanted a slabbed sketch cover, you had to use them (and for a span of time Joe would do this show each summer). I was unaware if any facilitator was facilitating, you can usually tell as there were nobody with short boxes on hand carts or large stacks of books with painter tape boxes.

Scooby as Inspector Gadget: Matthew Parton @ Gardenstate Comic Fest 06/29/19 CA Comics nn Signature 9.8 When it comes to sketch covers, I do try most times, to match the type of sketch cover to the theme. At the beginning of my Scooby hunt, there wasn't the Scooby Apocalypse sketch cover (and seriously they can't do one for the Scooby Batman team up? I'd buy a dozen or two).

I also look for the odd sketch covers, the blank ones made by comic book stores or websites that act like a sketch book that either have full white pages or unique covers.

This one with the little box in the upper left corner reminded me of the old Marvel books from the silver age. I have had twelve books through Matt over the years. He is a good friend and a talented artist. It helps that he loves Scooby too! Most times I try to get him to do a mashup based off of cartoon voices or actors from a show he is attending to get it signed by the voice talents. Knowing he likes Inspector Gadget, had me request this commission and it came out great. We don't always get the chance to meet up at a show that has CGC attendance so I do have to wait at times a few years for his commissions but they are always worth the wait!

I also like how he has Dr. Claw in the old corner box. Agents of Slabs were used at Gardenstate Comic Fest 2019 and CGC messed up the second signing but alas, they were troubling times. The Frank Welker signature was obtained by Dan Partouche on 2/07/20 at a Galaxy Con just before the world shut down. CGC had copied the original date but I wasn't aware of mechanical errors for wrong dates.

CGC graded this 03/09/20.

Another perk of submitting oddball things for signature series is the almost guarantee of being the lone census item!

Scooby Doo VS. Prime Evil & Ghostly Red Beard the Pirate: Matthew Parton @ Gardenstate Comic Fest 2019 6/29/19 Scooby Apocalypse 1 Signature 9.8 As Matt was attending the show with a few old school voice talents, I asked him to create this sketch cover for me that had Scooby with monsters to scare Scooby.

On the back I have this signed by Tom Cook who was one of the original animators for Hanna-Barbara and Alan Oppenheimer who voiced Prime Evil from the Filmation Ghostbusters he added on the back not Prime Evil but Scooby Dum which I think he voiced at one point. Michael Bell voiced the ghostly version of Red Beard the Pirate so that was why I had Matt include that ghost as well.

Scooby Eating Pizza the Hutt: Len Danovich 3/23/20 & Signed Ed Gale @ Chiller Last appearance 10/29/21 Scooby Apocalypse 1 Signature 9.4 One of my top five favorite sketch covers of Scooby Doo inspired commissions. Originally, Rich Henn was going to be in attendance at Zapp Comic Con, a small comic convention in New Jersey run by the owner of Zapp Comics. A comic store that has two locations and a warehouse of storage. They offer the tables to students of the local Kubert Art School and a couple big names come to support.

This year, had COVID not hit, Dan Slott was going to be there, and Rich Henn had this show on his roster initially to facilitate. I had asked Len to do this sketch as I had previously seen him drawing Pizza the Hutt at a previous show. He had agreed to either hand it off to a facilitator for me or as we both knew the show would probably not happen, to send it to CGC for me. (I had recently found out this time about artist direct submissions to CGC).

Len finished this and mailed it off to CGC for me. Later at Chiller Fall Show in 2021, Rich Henn added Ed Gale an actor from the Spaceballs movie at his last ever public appearance.

Signed and sketched by Len Danovich on 3/23/20 & Signed by Ed Gale on 10/29/21. CGC graded on 5/28/22.

Scooby Doo Introduced to Sweedish Chef's Cooking: Guy Gilchrist 4/29/20 Scooby Apocalypse 1 Signature 9.8 Guy Gilchrist at home commission. Scooby Doo found out why you don't snoop around in Swedish Chef's kitchen! During the pandemic for a few months, Guy Gilchrist did live at home shows where he drew, and offered older paper sketches at rates lower than how he would price them at conventions. He did a lot of Swedish Chef and when his commissions opened, you knew I had to do a Scooby mixed with Swedish Chef.

Guy agreed to do the CGC process, and this needed to be resent back for mechanical error as they only listed on the slab initially signed by Guy Gilchrist. This one will always be special to me as it was created on a date that is special for my family.

Signed and Sketched by Guy Gilchrist on 4/29/20 and graded on 6/25/20.

This one was a commission request of mine to do a spoof cover from the Scooby Doo Gold Key #25 the Dracula cover. Keep Scooby only instead of Dracula, have Count Chocula and Count Duckula. Scooby Doo Mythbusters: Matthew Parton 8/10/20 Scooby Apocalypse 1 Signature 9.8 Originally, C2E2 2020 had Adam Savage as a guest. Being a HUGE Mythbusters fan, I needed to have a Scooby Mythbusters mashup. Unfortunately, because of COVID the show was cancelled, but I still hoped to one day get Adam Savage to sign so Matt had to submit the book directly to CGC on my behalf.

Flashforward to Awesome Con 2021 Rich Henn was facilitating and Adam Savage was present. I was warned that there was a chance of a grade drop but I honestly use CGC for the documentation first the grade is second. With a slight press it maintained the grade but more importantly, Adam Savage signed on 8/21/21! Now if only Jaime were to attend a show....

This was signed by Adam almost a year to the date that Matt completed the sketch only one year and eleven days difference.

Scooby Dungeon Alice Cooper: 8/10/20 Scooby Apocalypse 1 Signature 9.8 This was another mashup that had the show cancel because of COVID. I still wanted the mashup however, and Matt added my requests with his own spin before he sent it to CGC on my behalf. The original show was going to be C2E2.

The voice of Dr. Finkelstein voiced by Jess Harnell, Jim Cummings who voiced Kaa the snake early in his career, and Alice Cooper himself were going to be in attendance. I asked for it to be a creepy theme in a dungeon and Matt wanted to reflect a bit of the muppet show into it as Alice did attend a episode of the Muppet Show earlier in his career so I told him to have fun.

Since COVID, I have not have the opportunity to add Alice Cooper yet to this. I could have had Jess Harnell & Jim Cummings do this post COVID a few times but I have always been anxious that the second this gets cracked and added those signatures Alice Cooper will be at a show while the book is tied up in CGC. It will happen one day!

Daphne and Velma surviving the Zombie Apocalypse, and later colored by Steve Lydic.

It is a bit risqué which is why the old lottery ticket is there. The zombies which remind me of the type from Scooby Doo on Zombie Island, ripped off some of the clothes to reveal woman's lingerie. As it would not be the best if viewing at work, the lottery ticket is there.

Scooby Eating Scooby Snacks: Joe Staton @ Baltimore 10/23/21 Scooby Apocalypse 1 Signature 9.6 The more conventional return to comic conventions has arrived after the 2020 shutdowns with more health implementations in place such as maskings, vaccination checks, and covid negative tests upon entering for Baltimore.

Baltimore and Heroes are two traditional shows where I have One Stop Comic Shop help to add to the Joe Staton collection. I had this one and the last in a themed Mad Magazine set where Scooby characters are doing a infinity theme of repeating the image over and over again in the cover.

This was also the short two year window 2021-2022 where Joe's prices fluctuated between big conventions and small and the factor of if his wife was present also reflected pricing. I was unaware at the time and it was definitely an ouch day for the wallet (especially as I had another sketch through Rich Henn) I figured this way if Dan had other clients wanting sketches it wouldn't get a rejection through Joe.

Fred Reading Mad Magazine: Joe Staton 10/23/21 Frank Welker: "3/30/20" Mad 538 Signature 9.8 The last one completed in the series of Scooby Doo character reading Mad Magazine through an infinity cover. My idea many years ago was to have Scooby Doo reading a Mad Magazine. Dan Partouche had the idea of making it an infinity cover and I loved it so much that I got Joe Staton over the spand of many years to do each of the gang to do on.

This was the last in the series and the one I thought wouldn't happen once COVID hit. The opportunity arrived to add Frank Welker right around the time the world started shutting down but we didn't know that would happen at the time. Frank Welker signed with the character name Fred on 3/20/20. I originally planned on adding Freddie Prince Jr. to it but not after what Joe Staton did in 2021.

He did the Fred drawing at Baltimore 2021 but he incorporated Frank Welker's signature into the infinity sketch so it would have thrown it off!

Signed & Sketched By Joe Staton on 10/23/21 Fred Reading Mad Magazine Infinity Cover through Dan Partouche at Baltimore 2021. Dan added Frank Welker & "Fred" at Galaxy Con 3/20/20. "Really 2/20/20 but CGC messed up date."

Signed & "Fred" By Frank Welker on 3/20/20, Signed & Sketch by Joe Staton on 10/23/21.

Grader Notes: Unavailable (This was a 9.8 both times but did have to press it once Joe sketched as it was the first time he was ever a little rough on the cover then again, the MAD magazines are hard to get in a 9.8. Scooby as Joker: Joe Staton @ Baltimore 10/23/21 Batman 0 Signature 9.0 At Baltimore 2021 I had requests through Dan Partouche and Rich Henn for Joe Staton this way, if other clients wanted sketches through Joe I wouldn't clog up one facilitator's list.

Scooby as Riddler: Joe Staton @ Baltimore 10/23/21 Batman: The Detective 1 Signature 9.8 Baltimore Comic Con 2021: The story continues...

Rich Henn had facilitated for me on Friday of the show to have Joe Staton do a Scooby as Riddler. On Sunday Rich sent me a text. There was a problem, and in the words of Rich, "You are one lucky dog!"

Joe had forgotten which character he was supposed to draw and really got into Scooby as Joker. It was only after completing the sketch that he realized his mistake by checking his notes. Now most artist will chuck that off as a mistake and you deal with it. Not Joe, he is a true class act and just another reason why he is my favorite artist of all time.

Joe upon finding his mistake, started searching Baltimore comic con for a blank sketch cover similar to the type I had. I had the old Batman #0 blank so he picked up the newer Batman Detective #1 blank with the bats background. He then proceeded to do the requested sketch and when Rich went to pick it up, Joe shared he had made the mistake and there was no additional charges since it was his goof and I now had two full body sketches for the price of one.

Needless to say I was BEYOND excited and my reply was to please add it to my CGC submission. This is the one and only time that I will get 4 sketches by the same artist plus two remarques at one show.
