Set Description
Joe Staton, is hands down my favorite artist of all time. It all started unknowingly back in 1997 when I started reading and collecting the Scooby Doo comic series as a kid. As I grew older, I combined a love of history to research the artist and writers of my favorite titles.

When I first started using the CGC Signature Series Program back in 2015, I mainly used it just to encapsulate sketch covers. As more of the legends sadly have passed on, I regret not having certain books certified and now certify more than not. Meeting Joe Sinnott during college days and not being able to afford CGC comes to mind.

As a Joe Staton fan, I am going to try for the ultimate grail run (albeit an impossibility with not every issue ever hitting signature series), but I can sure try my best. What type of grail run you ask?

I am going to try to see how far I can get collecting every book that Joe Staton worked on signed (Or at least focus on Scooby, Green Lantern, & E-Man as a starting point.) Any not in those three categories will be an added bonus. Slowly, these will mostly be purchased secondhand. It helps that if it isn't a 9.8, collectors seem to drop their books on eBay.

Most times if it has a remarque, it was a book that I specifically submitted in person or through a facilitator in regards to Green Lantern or Scooby based. The E-man's were a bonus find purchasing secondhand.

Through research I have been able to pinpoint which conventions dates correspond with. While most of these conventions were multiple day events, I am only listing dates that I have seen physical evidence that a Joe Staton signing was submitted to CGC.

Charlton Comics: Signed: 10/23/21 E-Man 1 Signature 9.2 Facilitator: Rich Henn @ Baltimore Comic Con 2021

Would have loved to have gotten a remarque but this was at the time that Joe changed his sketch rates and I had a few pieces in with him at this show.

This, was part of the Economy book slowdown where it took over a year for books to come home. If memory serves this took about a year and four months to make it back home.

E-man was created by Joe Staton and Nicola Cuti with several quirky characters and a mix of science fiction.

E-Man First Comics Series Signed: 6/6/10 E-Man Remarque E-Man 1 Signature 9.6 Old style slab from 2010! Purchased off of Rich Henn from eBay. Small remarque of E-Man by Joe Staton. I wonder how many still exist from the old signature series slabs. This is one of those super skinny slabs.

Signed on 6/6/10 from Heroes Con and graded on 6/30/10.

Census: As of 6/26/23
Blue Label Universal: 41 (9.8 x 16, 9.6 x 14, 9.4 x 4, 9.2 x 2, 9.0 x 3, 8.5 x 1, 7.0 x 1)

Qualified Label: 1 (6.5 x 1)

According to the census, the first copy was signed in the signature series program on 6/30/10 I believe this means I own the first slabbed signature series one!

E-Man First Comics Series Signed: 6/5/21 E-Man Remarque E-Man 1 Signature 8.0 This was slabbed on 6/5/21 at Niagara Comic Con It was another of the long haul books as it was graded on 5/12/22.

New set of E-Man stories now from First Comics and the same team of Joe Staton and Nicoli.

Note: This was past the two year window that Joe Staton did his smaller remarques with a black box around the figure like a picture frame. 2021 & 2022 remarques have a black box around the character. Starting back in 2023, Joe does a black or some type of scribbling around the remarque to help project it better on the cover, and they are larger than previously done in 2021 & 2022. Prior to the pandemic, Joe did very small remarques without a window.

E-Man First Comics Series: Signed: 6/5/21 E-Man 19 Signature 7.5 This was an eBay pickup, another of the 6/5/21 signed slabs from when Joe returned to the convention circuit with the opening up of conventions again. At this rate, I might get most of the First Comic series of E-Man from 6/5/21.

On Nova's TV show, it is Voodoo week. It appears that some of the artifacts from the show are more authentic than anticipated.

Signed on 6/5/21 & graded on 2/16/22

light staining to cover
medium, very light crease right bottom of front cover breaks color

Looks like the submitter has my usual style, submit a book with low or no pre-existing books on the census usually in a 7.5 -9.2 grade.

E-Man First Comics Series: Signed 6/5/21 E-Man 20 Signature 9.4 This is the 4th book in the wild I was able to find with Joe Staton's signature on 6/5/21.

This is the second run of E-Man, the first being the Charlton comics run created by Joe Staton. This is the second series, now picked up by First Comics.

The story revolves around some missing films, and E-Man tries to help someone finding Dot.

Joe Staton signed on 6/5/21 and CGC graded on 5/12/22.
Grader's Notes: very small crease left bottom of back cover

CGC Census: As of 6/28/23
Universal Blue Label: 0 (The first time I've ever seen a book have multiple in signature series and none in blue!)
Signature Series Yellow Label: 10 (9.8 x 8, 9.6 x 1, 9.4 x 1)

Yeah, I own the lowest grade! I am one of those odd balls that tries to go for the lowest grade a book, if I am not the lone wolf on the census.

Signed: 1/28/23 Joe Staton Teenage Fan Letter Green Lantern 11 Signature 5.5 I nearly gave the eBay seller heart failure when I asked in the notes to please put do not bend on the mailer because I was going to have Joe Staton sign it. He nearly immediately wrote back with a long message explaining that Joe didn't draw the book it was Joe Gill and that Joe Staton was only a teenager at the time and only had a fan letter published in the book.

He underestimated the extend of me being a Joe Staton fan! I assured him that I knew what I was doing as it said on the cgc label the notation about Joe writing the letter. I also said I planned on adding Joe Giella. It was set up with Rich Henn, then sadly Joe Giella caught covid and had to cancel his last remaining shows. He passed on prior to being able to get Mr. Giella's autograph.

This book was passed off to Agents of Slabs where they got Joe's signature at Garden State Comic Fest Winter Edition 2023. This was signed on 1/28/23 and fast tracked but it took a bit to make it home. It was graded on 5/10/23

Additionally, this was the first issue that had Kilowog a character created by Joe Staton and Steve Englehart.

The story was called; "Setting Up Shop." The plot has seven Green Lanterns doing battle with seven villains.

I had heard that Joe Staton would be at Phoenix Fan Fusion and a board member suggested that I reach out to a board member in regards to the show as they had facilitated previously.

Signed: 6/5/21 Green Lantern Corps 207 Signature 8.5 This one took the seller a long time to get back from CGC signed on 6/5/21 at Niagara Falls Comic Con and it was graded on 6/17/22.

It was for sale on Mercari and at 60% off probably because of the back cover being a bit ruffled on the top or perhaps the grade wasn't what they wanted. It was bought well below the price of slabbing/shipping back home.

In this issue by Joe Staton, Kilowog was interviewed by Tom Brokaw on NBC News about his battle over Black Hand and man do I need to find a reader copy now!

Joe's first Scooby Cover Published Baltimore 10/30/22 Scooby-Doo 4 Signature 9.2 This was the very first Scooby Doo book that Joe Staton ever worked on. I missed out on purchasing the original cover months previously. Dan helped me to get this done by Joe. It is probably one of my favorite remarques from Joe.

It is from his transition stage where he was doing black picture frames around small remarques and his newer method of outlining his remarques. The silver really helps to make it pop.

Russian Edition: Collects 26-30 Scooby-Doo 27 Signature 6.0 Bought off of eBay several months prior to Baltimore Comic Con from a seller in Ukraine. I was happy to have found at the time a foreign edition of Scooby, the back has major flaws with tearing however.

The book is made in similar size and format as the TPB's that DC released years ago that collected stories in the 1997 series about the size of a skinnier Archie Digest book you find in the reader's digest area in a supermarket. This collects the 1997 series issues 26-30.

Joe Staton & Vito Delsante: Baltimore 2019 Scooby-Doo 109 Signature 9.2 Epic shout out to Dan @ One Stop Comic Shop for this. He knows that I'm a huge Scooby Doo fan and has helped me many times acquire Scooby items. He said it was too late for me to ship but he happened to purchase a copy of 109 off of eBay and if I wanted it he recommended a pressing. I happily agreed and asked for Joe to remarque it too.

Vito added the date and convention to his signature, something that I don't see too often amongst signatures.

Signed: 6/5/21 Silver Surfer v3 #13 Signature 9.4 One of only four issues of Silver Surfer that Joe Staton worked on during his career. Hmm, I wonder how a Scooby Version of Silver Surfer would look. Anyway, back to this story...

In this series of Silver Surfer Volume 3, there are a total of 146 issues and 9 annuals to the series. Joe worked on issues; 11, 13, 14, & Annual #1.

I have noticed among the search that a lot of slabs recently are coming up for sale with the signed by Joe date of 6/5/21. Not too surprising considering it was his first convention since the pandemic hit and people were probably nostalgic for getting back to normal convention habits. What I am finding surprising though is a few of these recent finds have evidence light stains or dirt on the cover.

I doubt it's for sentimental purposes as the copies I have been purchasing are coming from comic book stores in California. Perhaps it was an oversight on the submitter. Then again, there have been times where I had to do a mad rush to find a certain copy of a book before a convention and you are up to the mercy of online sales without inspecting the book in person. I've gotten more qualified labels that way via eBay purchases...

Just three more issues to go to have the full run of Joe Staton on Silver Surfer.
