Owner's Description

Issue #16 features the Fate of the Flattened-out Atom. In the story, between his constant crime fighting as the Atom and his duties as a scientist at Ivy University, Ray is worn out, and decides to take a vacation. Of course, not everything goes as planned, as the cottage Ray rents is next to a roadhouse, which plays loud music all night long, driving Ray to go and sleep in the wilderness as Atom.

There Atom is captured by Andrew Frost, a man who has found that he gets precognitive powers whenever the Atom uses his powers. Only being able to see only 7 minutes into the future, he hopes that by capturing the Atom he can boost his powers. Frost uses a specially prepared iron, which literally flattens Atom, so that he can store him in a special case that channels the power into Frost.

While Frost goes out to use his precognitive abilities for his own personal gain, Atom is unable to get free due to his fatigue. However, he eventually breaks free and in spite of the fact that he has been flattened, the Atom is able to defeat Frost, restore himself back to normal and turn Frost over to the authorities, whew!

Our 9.8 comes from the Pacific Coast Collection and is tied with two other copies for highest graded. Considered the greatest Silver Age collection to ever surface, the Pacific Coast collection was brought to market by Robert Roter after he discovered portions of it for sale on eBay in 1999. The books were marketed through PCE over the next several years and contained over 7,000 comics and magazines that included Marvel, DC, and Gold Key among others, covering a time span between 1961 and 1977. Many of the highest graded Marvel and DC issues from the early '60s hail from this collection with exceptional page quality. The books do not exhibit any distinguishing markings.

We acquired the book in a swap of 9.8s from a friend and fellow collector in May 2023.
