Story summary: Rick and Shane are cops. Rick gets shot while on duty. He wakes up in an abandoned hospital not knowing anything of the zombie apocalypse. As he makes his way back to his house to check on his family, he runs into Morgan Jones and his son Duane. It is Duane who whacks Rick in the face with a shovel thinking that he's a zombie. When Rick comes to, he gears himself up at his old police station to continue his search for Lori, his wife and Carl, his son. He arrives in Atlanta on horse, before being surrounded by 'Walkers'.

The print run on this comic was small. Of the 7,266 said to have been printed, 3379 (46.5% of the total on 28/11/2021) had been graded by CGC, mostly in grade 9.0 or higher. The highest graded copies on the census are at 9.9 (25 of). In March 2016, a 9.9 copy sold on eBay for a staggering $22,825. There is one copy graded at 0.5. Back in 2014, this copy sold on eBay for $756.

My CGC journal is based on TWD #1. It provides a unique review of this iconic October 2003 comic, with analysis of its 269 total variant and reprint covers, its prowess in the CGC Registry and in the re-sale market - see here.
