Synopsis: Carol Danvers reports for work at the Woman magazine offices to find a termination letter and severance check from J. Jonah Jameson on her desk. More tired and sad than angry, Carol heads to the roof and transforms into Ms. Marvel, but isn’t in the air long before Death-Bird attacks her. Carol is shocked, as she believed Death-Bird had died during their previous battle. They trade punches before Death-Bird vanishes.

Carol shops for the rest of the day before returning home, where she’s surprised by a party thrown by the Woman magazine staff. Dr. Michael Barnett is also in attendance and ready to confess his love for Carol, but drunkenness makes him inept and clumsy and he spills his drink on her blouse. Even Raven Darkholme has shown up, and she takes notice of Barnett and his feelings for Carol.

Ushering Barnett outside for some fresh air, Carol is struck with a particularly vivid seventh-sense flash and turns into Ms. Marvel, flying to a pier on the East River where Death-Bird and associates are stealing select electronics hardware from a freighter sent from Tokyo to Stark International which Death-Bird intends to use to facilitate her return home. Ms. Marvel engages her in battle, again wondering at Death-Bird’s apparent non-humanness, but is amazed when her adversary helps her save an innocent motorist from his burning car, wrecked as a result of their fight. The momentary truce allows a number of people, attracted by the sound of the battle, to arrive, preventing Death-Bird from getting away with the components she was trying to steal. Doomed to a lengthier exile, she flies off before Ms. Marvel can dig herself out of the rubble.
