Ms. Marvel has a wide array of superhuman powers. Initially they included superhuman strength, endurance, formidable resistance to physical injury, the ability to fly, and a precognitive sense.

When she became Binary, she could manipulate every form of energy in the electromagnetic spectrum on a cosmic level, had vastly increased strength, and could fly at speeds exceeding light. After her link to the white hole from which she drew her powers was severed, she lost the bulk of her cosmic powers, but still retained her energy manipulation powers on a smaller scale. In addition to her original powers of superhuman strength, injury resistance, and flight, Ms. Marvel has the ability to absorb and manipulate photonic energy. She can focus her photonic powers into explosive blasts of radiant energy, which she fires from her fingertips. These blasts are comparable in power to her fellow Avenger Iron Man's repulsor rays. By focusing her powers outward in all directions, she can surround herself with an energy aura which deflects most attacks. She also has some gravitational powers which allow her to boost her already tremendous strength by absorbing the gravitational forces around her. She has also demonstrated the ability to absorb other forms of energy, such as electricity, to further magnify her strength and energy projection. On at least one occasion, Binary was able to use her power to force open a Shi'ar Stargate, a feat which only hosts of the Phoenix Force and Firestar have managed before or since.

Originally, Hank McCoy, aka the Beast, after performing several biological tests, had theorized Ms. Marvel would never be able to access her cosmic level powers again. However, recent events have proven this to be incorrect. It has been confirmed as of New Avengers #17 and #18 that Ms. Marvel still possesses all the abilities she had as Binary, and merely lacks a suitable power supply. One might then surmize that her abilities to absorb and manipulate energy have no upper limit. This was confirmed when Ms. Marvel battled the sentient energy being known as The Collective and was stuck by a bolt of its energy, causing her skin to turn fiery red, which was a side effect of her cosmic powers. I remember the first superhero comic I ever bought was at a comic store at Metcalf South. The issue was from the Wolverine Mini Series, issue #2 because I liked the cover. I eventually bought the other 3 issues and started to collect his regular series when it was around issue 5. I bought back copies to fill in the blanks and to this day, Wolverine is my favorite character. My collecting days went on hiatus when the comic market got a little carried away with variants.
Flash forward to 2015 when I decided to visit the local Comic Con. I ended up buying a Wolverine 1988 series issue #1 graded CGC 9.8. I hadn’t really thought about it much up to that point, but the collecting bug was rekindled. I dug out my collection that had been stored away and decided to start submitting my back issues. I looked online to fill gaps in my various collections and thousands of dollars later I’ve acquired quite a few comics and am trying to avoid collecting too many series at a time! I also like to collect covers I find appealing (see Incredible Hulk 340) and 1st appearances here and there. It’s all a labor of love! Be sure to check out the descriptions of the individual comics as I'm investing the time to make sure they are informative and whenever possible describe the individual story lines!.

Synopsis: The series begins as a mystery woman wearing a costume reminiscent of Captain Marvel's swoops down to stop a bank robbery in New York City. Utilizing a strange seventh sense that helps her anticipate the robbers' moves, the woman easily dispatches them on the street before they can escape, but remains unaware that the supervillain who hired the robbers to serve as a distraction, the Scorpion, is inside the bank, robbing the vault. The Scorpion uses the $200,000 he stole from the bank to buy the secret laboratory of Professor Kerwin Korman, a weapons scientist employed by Hydra.

A short time later, ex-NASA security chief Carol Danvers interviews with Daily Bugle editor J. Jonah Jameson for the position of editor of Jameson's new magazine, Woman. Jameson makes clear that he wants Carol's first article to be a feature on the city's newest female superhero. On the way out of Jameson's office, Carol meets Mary Jane Watson and her boyfriend, Peter Parker, and Carol invites MJ to visit her upscale Central Park penthouse apartment, purchased with royalties from her first book about the space industry. She explains that her inability to capture Captain Marvel destroyed her security career, and she turned to her first love of writing. She asks MJ to leave after suffering a sudden, severe migraine headache.

The Scorpion kidnaps Jameson that evening and takes him to Korman's lab where he plans to drop Jameson into an acid vat to gain revenge on Jameson for turning him into the Scorpion in the first place. The city's new superheroine flies to the Daily Bugle shortly thereafter, warned by her seventh sense too late to prevent Jameson's kidnapping but confident that being in the Bugle building will provide her the necessary vibrations to determine where he was taken. Sensing him in an abandoned house in Brooklyn, she flies there immediately, realizing after a brief conversation with Bugle city editor Joe Robertson that she doesn't know who she is. Once she enters the house, she realizes while evading the lab's traps and fighting the Scorpion that her abilities come from the alien Kree, explaining why her costume resembles Captain Marvel's. She throws the Scorpion into the side of the acid vat, shattering it, and rescues Jameson, choosing for herself the codename Ms. Marvel.

The next morning, a furious Jameson demands that Carol Danvers write a scathing expose of Ms. Marvel. Back in her office, Carol is confused and worried about her increasing migraines and blackouts, and wonders why the mention of Ms. Marvel gives her a strange chill.

Synopsis: In their secret headquarters under a New York City department store, AIM agents confer with Prof. Kerwin Korman who has brought them film footage of Ms. Marvel’s battle with the Scorpion. Korman advocates capturing Ms. Marvel…dead or alive.
His AIM liaison disagrees stating AIM’s preference for taking her alive for more thorough study. Korman warns them not to underestimate the woman warrior, stating the extent of her powers. He offers to capture her and the AIM agent warns him not to be motivated by a desire for retribution for the destruction of his lab. Korman states that he has no such motive since he had already sold the lab to the Scorpion to help finance his own criminal career as the Destructor.
The AIM agent reiterates that they want her alive so she can explain the design of her costume, which their x-ray photos reveal to be the source of her powers of flight. AIM is bewildered by this advanced technology and determined to have it for themselves.
Korman asks if his price for hunting down Ms. Marvel is acceptable and AIM states that he is unproven and Ms. Marvel has already bested the Scorpion. At that moment, agents wheel in the unconscious form of Mac Gargan. They wonder how Korman will succeed and he dons his helmet and unleashes a destructive blast of tachyon energy as a demonstration of his might.
In her office at the Daily Bugle, Carol Danvers is working overtime on WOMAN magazine. Her efforts are interrupted by the arrival of Mary Jane Watson, who informs her that the rest of her staff has left for the evening and wonders why she’s working so late. MJ shares that her friend, Peter Parker is in a meeting with J. Jonah Jameson and so Carol invites MJ to join her for dinner.
The two women walk to a nearby restaurant and Carol tells MJ that after a day listening to Jameson’s views on women, chatting with her is cathartic. MJ expresses her admiration for Carol who seems to have it so together. Carol assures MJ that once she knows what she wants from life, she’s confident that nothing will stop the feisty redhead. Carol assures her that she’ll find herself.
MJ asks how Carol managed to find herself. Carol admits that she isn’t sure that she has yet but recounts how she got to where she is now. She touches briefly on her NASA career and recaps her relationship to Captain Marvel and how she ended up a pawn in his struggle against Yon-Rogg. She emphasizes that she doesn’t want to be a pawn ever again. As she explains that the end of her security career is what led her to pursue writing, she is once more overcome by an intense headache. She excuses herself quickly and takes a cab back to her penthouse. She ends up passing out in the taxi.
At that moment, the newly-christened Destructor travels to Florida. He talks to himself, expounding on how he has studied Ms. Marcel since her debut in this area of Florida weeks earlier. He is also aware of the connection that this place has to Captain Mar-Vell and that the cave where Ms. Marvel first appeared is also where Mar-Vell fought his final battle against Yon-Rogg. Korman’s energy detector indicates intense levels of atomic energy were released there. He concludes that some of the power unleashed during this clash now belongs to Ms. Marvel and vows that it will all soon be his!
At the AIM facility, technicians review the data regarding the Scorpion’s recovery and marvel at how rapidly he is healing. They worry that they won’t be able to control him for much longer. Right on cue, the Scorpion crashes through a door crying out in pain. He attacks the AIM agents demanding that they make the pain stop. They are quickly scattered by his attacks, despite superior numbers. The Scorpion flees as his memory of what happened during his battle with Ms. Marvel return. He climbs an elevator shaft and emerges in the department store under which AIM’s base is hidden. He is confronted by two security guards but quickly overpowers them.
As the Scorpion flees into the city, the AIM agents worry that if he finds Ms. Marvel before the Destructor does, there may not be much left of the woman warrior or the Scorpion for them to study.
At her penthouse, Carol wakes in her bed and cannot recall how she got there. She worries that she is losing her mind due to the pressure of the last several weeks and goes to her friend and psychologist Michael Barnett for help. Dr. Barnett can see how panicked and desperate Carol is when she arrives and quickly reschedules his current appointment to help her out.
Carol explains her problem and Michael opts to use hypnosis to calm Carol down and explore her subconscious. Under hypnosis, she once again recounts the battle between Mar-Vell and Yon-Rogg. She remembers nearly passing out as Mar-Vell carried her to safety. She recalls an explosion and being bathed in the fiery radiation that was unleashed before blacking out completely. She continues and explains how she awoke in a hospital and how upsetting this was despite the diagnosis that the radiation had not harmed her.
She goes on to explain how upon her return to Cape Canaveral she grew uncomfortable with the level of scrutiny that came from her failure to capture Captain Marvel. This led to the decline of her career in security and her decision to pursue a career in writing. Despite her quick success in this new profession, she was plagued by a sense of uneasiness. She then begins to relay what happened during her first blackout. Barnett encourages her to explore this and asks what happened next.
Even within the hypnotic trance, Carol becomes agitated. She cried out that her skull is splitting apart and tries to refuse to remember, but Dr. Barnett urges her on. Carol recalls lying on the floor and feeling herself change. She describes the glow around her and the sudden sense of physical strength as her body becomes larger and stronger than before. She explains that she disappeared and in her place was someone better than her…Ms. Marvel!
Carol comes out of her trance and asks Michael what he learned. He ponders how to tell Carol that he thinks she is suffering from some form of paranoid delusion. He begins to tell her that the hypnosis didn’t work and that they’ll need to work on these issues further when Carol abruptly passes out. Dr. Barnett manages to catch her as she falls and worries that his efforts have forced another major mental health setback for Carol who is already on edge.
As he holds her in his arms, she begins to glow and transforms into Ms. Marvel before his eyes! Guided by her seventh sense, Ms. Marvel moves wordlessly to a nearby window and flies out into the afternoon sky. Michael is bewildered as he realizes that Carol’s hypnosis had revealed the truth… that she is Ms. Marvel!
Ms. Marvel’s seventh sense guides her to the area of New York City where the Scorpion is on a rampage. The Scorpion is mad and demands to know where Ms. Marvel is. She flies up and punches him before he’s even aware of her presence. He charges and vows that she’s going to regret that he’s found her.
She easily evades his careless attack and he smacks into a light pole. Ms. Marvel tells him that he has it backwards and she has found him and plans to bring him to justice this time. She grabs him by his tale and takes to the sky as he threatens to kill her. He grabs onto a large statue and continues his ranting but it’s clear that the woman warrior has the advantage.
She is so focused on the Scorpion that she doesn’t see the blast of energy that strikes her fro behind and drives her into the asphalt below. She looks up to see the Destructor who arrives on a hover-disk. He challenges her openly and fires another tachyon blast at her. This time, she sees it coming and deftly dodges it. Grabbing a motorcycle, she flings it at the Destructor and knocks him from his hover-disk.
He lands without injury and unleashes another blast that hits Ms. Marvel square in the chest. The Destructor approaches thinking that he’s knocked her unconscious. Despite her wooziness, Ms. Marvel manages to kick him with all her remaining strength. This sends him careening into a fire hydrant, knocking him unconscious. Despite her best efforts, Ms. Marvel cannot stay conscious any longer and passes out next to her vanquished foe.

Synopsis: Ms. Marvel uses a lamppost to support herself as she tries to rise after taking a full-force tachyon blast from her foe the Destructor. Mere feet away, the Destructor AKA Dr. Kerwin Korman also struggles to shake off the latest blow he received from the woman warrior. As the two fighters struggle to rise, onlookers stand back close enough to see what’s happening but far enough to be out of harm’s way.
The Destructor makes it to his feet first and moves to finish Ms. Marvel off. She is warned by her seventh sense and pulls the lamppost out of the ground to use as a weapon. Korman curses her seventh sense and unleashes his tachyon beam which destroys the lamppost. He tells her that she can throw a building at him with her Kree-born strength and his tachyon beam will destroy it, too.
Ms. Marvel wonders how the Destructor knows of her seventh sense and Kree origins as she flies in close and punches him square in the jaw. As she does so, he fires another tachyon blast and she is too close to dodge! She is thrown back onto a broken fire hydrant that is spewing water. She blocks the flow of water momentarily with her body and allows the pressure to build before redirecting it in a single powerful stream at the Destructor. This blow knocks Korman unconscious.

Ms. Marvel has little time to enjoy her victory before another splitting headache strikes. A bit dazed from this and the lingering effects of the battle, she is unprepared for what happens next. The ground below Destructor splits open and a high-tech transport emerges. AIM agents pour out and lay down a barrage of laser fire to cover their attempt to extract Korman.
Ms. Marvel manages to avoid the beams which strike a nearby apartment building instead. She leaps into action to save a pair of children from a collapsing wall, pushing herself despite the pain she still feels from the Destructor’s tachyon beam. She succeeds in saving the kids, but AIM manages to escape with Korman.
Ms. Marvel realizes that both Korman and the AIM agents seem familiar but she is unable to remember why. The children thank her and apologize for allowing the bad guys to get away. Ms. Marvel graciously tells them that she’d rather save lives than catch bad guys.

Ms. Marvel flies away and takes a moment’s rest on a nearby rooftop. She ponders the strange mysteries surrounding her identity and is frustrated that the harder she tries to learn the truth the more mixed up things get. She punches a wall and marvels at her superhuman strength. But when her head once more begins to throb with pain, Ms. Marvel is overwhelmed. A moment later, she transforms into Carol Danvers and collapses on the rooftop.
Disoriented, Carol realizes she is on the roof of the Daily Bugle building and wonders how she got there. She makes her way inside and is greeted by her staff and Mary Jane Watson, who is waiting for her in her office. MJ notes how terrible Carol looks and Carol declines MJ’s offers to help. She rather abruptly asks Mary Jane to leave her alone so that she can get some work done. Carol silently chides herself for treating MJ that way but admits that she has a bit too much to deal with at work and with her current identity crisis to deal with MJ.

While sorting through the pile of papers that have accumulated on her desk, Carol reads a phone message detailing a call from her old friend, Salia Petrie an astronaut at NASA. Salia reports that she is part of the flight crew for a secret launch happening soon, making her the first female astronaut. Carol sees the story potential in covering Salia’s historic launch for WOMAN magazine. Her planning is interrupted by a brief phone call from Dr. Michael Barnett, who is eager to discuss his discoveries during their recent hypnosis session. Overwhelmed by work, Carol quickly declines his invitation to meet and hangs up before he has a chance to tell her the startling secret he learned: that she and Ms. Marvel are one and the same!
Carol takes her story idea to J. Jonah Jameson, who naturally objects to the idea of a woman astronaut. He tries to assign a man to cover the launch but Carol insists on writing the story up herself. She assures Jameson that the Daily Bugle will get to break the initial story while WOMAN handles the in-depth coverage and interviews. Jameson is none too pleased, especially when Carol slams the door to his office. As she leaves, he grumbles about women and where they ever got the idea that they were any good outside the kitchen.

Under a shabby department store in the Bronx lies the secret lair of AIM. Within, AIM agents strive to subjugate the will of Dr. Kerwin Korman using some kind of mind control device. This is their way of punishing the Destructor for his failure in capturing Ms. Marvel. The AIM agents continue to torture Korman but turn the main focus of their attention on a planned rocket launch by NASA that they believe threatens the success of several projects they have in the works. To counter the launch, AIM activates a rocket of their own carrying a mysterious and powerful device. The AIM team wonders if the force they are about to unleash is truly under their control or like the Cosmic Cube, a force that is not meant to be controlled by mere mortals and threatens all of creation once released. The rocket goes mostly unnoticed and makes its way to an orbital path over Cape Canaveral.

Carol Danvers arrives at Cape Canaveral and is greeted by her old friend, Salia Petrie. Almost immediately, Carol is beset by another wave of intense migraines. Salia prescribes a few hours at the beach and some relaxation before they head to the Cape and the two women depart for Salia’s home via a taxi.

The next day, Carol receives a tour of the Cape from Salia and David Adamson. She notes how much it has changed since she was there just a short time before as head of security. David tells Carol that the Skylab they designed went over well and they are now going to be testing the space shuttle. Carol is hit once more by a migraine and tries to hide it. Salia notices and asks if she’s okay and Carol excuses herself to take a pill. After she’s gone, Salia expresses her concern to David. She notes that she’s known Carol for years and never seen her so strung out. David shares her concern but knows there’s nothing they can do unless Carol asks them for help.

Carol makes her way to an alleyway and falls unconscious as a seventh sense premonition forces her transformation into Ms. Marvel. Ms. Marvel immediately sense that she is near her “birthplace” as she gets a clear picture of the missile that is homing in on the Kennedy Space Center. At a nearby air force command center, military personnel pick up the AIM rocket on radar and then see a smaller blip moving to intercept. Unbeknownst to them, it’s Ms. Marvel who has flown after it to investigate. She enters outer space and marvels at her suit’s ability to create an energy field that protects her and provides her with a breathable atmosphere. She finds a hatch on the rocket and pries it open.

As the hatch opens, a gigantic metal fist emerges and deftly strikes the woman warrior. The unseen pilot veers the rocket straight towards Ms. Marvel and she meets the attack head on and rips the nose of the rocket open. The “pilot” emerges and proves to be a giant robot. Ms. Marvel is hit with a painful flash of memory and recognizes the robot as the Doomsday Man.
The Doomsday Man attacks and Ms. Marvel evades its blast. She throws a chunk of the ship’s hull at it with spectacular force but little effect. She dodges his next attack and moves in close enough for a forceful punch to the robot’s face. This also has no effect whatsoever. The Doomsday Man uses his laser to destroy the ship and the resulting explosion drives Ms. Marvel into earth’s upper atmosphere. She tries to ease her descent but her scarf is caught by the robot. She feels their momentum build and wonders if she can survive re-entry and the fall to earth.

She is shocked to learn that she can and did survive the fall and the impact. When she gains her bearings, she is once more overwhelmed by mental flashes. They call her to a nearby cave despite her desire to assure the Doomsday Man’s whereabouts. She makes her way to the cave and demands some answers. She recognizes the place and realizes she has been there before. She recalls a machine and a battle she was caught in the middle of. She then realizes that it wasn’t her who was there but Carol Danvers.
Memories flood into her as she begins to make the connections in her mind. She realizes that she is also Carol Danvers and that the two are finally merging into one to create a whole person! After months of struggling, Ms. Marvel knows who she is! Nearby, the Doomsday Man begins to track Ms. Marvel abandoning his first objective due to his fall from space and shifting to his second objective: find and destroy Ms. Marvel!

Synopsis: After falling back to Earth, ms. Marvel finds herself fighting the Doomsday Man in a cave in Northern Florida. During the fight, part of her memory returns, and she remembers that she is Carol Danvers.
Meanwhile, Destructor is also in the cave, trying to locate powerful hidden Kree weapons.
Ms. Marvel eventual defeats the Doomsday Man buy removing the failsafe from the back of his head. Destructor finds the failsafe, and assumes it is the weapon he's looking for. The energies unleashed when he opens it are enough to burn him out, make him go blind and drive him insane. He runs around in a panic and ultimately causes the cave to collapse.
Later, Carol Danvers is rescued by her NASA friends Salia and David.
Later still, in New York Carol returns to her job at the Daily Bugle, and gets a call from her psychiatrist.

Alternate Take:
Continued from last issue... Ms. Marvel has traveled to the cavern where she was exposed to the Psychemagnatron which turned her into Ms. Marvel. She is attacked by the Doomsday Man, while at the same time the Destructor is looking for some sort of Kree technology to use as weapon.

After a lengthy battle, Ms. Marvel recalls when she met the creator of the Doomsday Man and is able to use that memory to devise a day to deactivate the robot. When Destructor attacks her, he reveals that he found a Kree device. However, upon opening it, the device inside strikes the Destructor blind. In a panic he begins firing mind blasts all over the cavern, causing a chain reaction and explosion. Ms. Marvel just barely manages to escape, and later when the military digs her out, she has turned back into Carol Danvers and passed out.

Synopsis: The first issue of Woman magazine has hit newsstands, and J. Jonah Jameson is not happy. Instead of writing a story discrediting Ms. Marvel as he had requested, he finds that Carol Danvers’ story lauds her exploits and even calls her “the Super-Hero Sensation of the Seventies.” Carol holds her own in a shouting match with Jameson until another seventh-sense premonition drops her. In the vision, she sees Ms. Marvel and firefighters in a refinery blaze, being attacked by an unseen giant and buried under rubble while trying to put the fire out. When Carol awakens, she discovers that a reporter-photographer named Frank Gianelli has entered her office. She assigns him to cover the refinery fire in New Jersey while she heads to Dr. Barnett’s office, but Ms. Marvel takes over before she can get there.

Arriving at the refinery, Ms. Marvel meets the fire chief, who orders her away, and a scientist named Dr. Ellis, who is concerned about the Cavourite Crystal in his nearby laboratory which is also ablaze. Ms. Marvel heads for the lab to save the four firemen she saw in her vision; trapped in one of the lab’s sub-basements, the firemen encounter Prince Gor-Tok of Sub-Terranea, better known as Grotesk. Grotesk plans to use the Cavourite Crystal to destroy the Earth, avenging the massacre of his people committed at the hands of humans with their atomic testing. Ms. Marvel flies into the basement and attacks Grotesk, giving the firemen a chance to escape. But as the heat and smoke from the fire quickly become unbearable, Ms. Marvel is barely able to knock Grotesk out, and the circuitry web built into her costume that enables her to fly shorts out during the fight.

She grabs the NASA security canister that holds the Cavourite Crystal, recalling a years-earlier encounter with the Crystal when, as Carol Danvers, she was the security officer assigned to guard it when it was being studied by Dr. Peter Corbeau. Corbeau explained that he hoped the Crystal would provide humanity with a practical faster-than-light star drive, though a slight mistake in refining the energy flow through the crystal matrix would probably destroy the world. Now, the Crystal is destined to be taken into space aboard Salia Petrie’s shuttle to be tested in orbit.

Unfortunately, without her costume’s circuitry web to protect her from the smoke, Ms. Marvel is too sick to notice Grotesk regaining consciousness, and he defeats her quickly, taking the Cavourite Crystal with him to the surface. Moments later, the refinery explodes and a forty-story fractioning tower crushes the lab building, burying her. Grotesk emerges victorious.

Synopsis: When the first issue of Woman Magazine turns out to be a financial success thanks in part to an article about Ms. Marvel, J. Jonah Jameson is both furious and happy about the outcome of its first issue. When he goes to tell off/congratulate Carol Danvers, she passes out from visions brought to her by her powers as Ms. Marvel.

Later, Carol changes into Ms. Marvel and is drawn to a factory where the underground dweller known as Grotesk has come to the surface to claim a Cavorite crystal. Ms. Marvel tries to stop Grotesk. However, she is easily overpowered and is lost in the burning rubble of the factory. Grotesk appears from the wreckage to those spectating the battle to boast about the destruction of Ms. Marvel. Synopsis: When the debris from the refinery fire hits the lab complex, it causes the floor to collapse, and the helpless Ms. Marvel finds herself falling deeper underground, into a pit that was hidden beneath the lab. She blacks out before she hits bottom, and when she awakens, she finds that energy restraints are holding her in mid-air. Her costume and mask have been removed, replaced by a skintight white suit, and she is being observed by MODOK, who explains his loss of control over A.I.M. and his subsequent reclaiming of their West Coast division. He intends to use Ms. Marvel to help him take back all of A.I.M. and then the world. Through clandestine monitoring of Ms. Marvel, MODOK boasts that he’s learned her costume is the source of much of her powers, and has given the costume to one of his agents for testing. However, unbeknownst to MODOK, the circuitry web in the costume burned out during the fight with Grotesk and none of its abilities work. Undaunted, MODOK subjects Ms. Marvel to his mind-ripper to bend her to his will.

Feigning unconsciousness, Ms. Marvel gets MODOK to order her released from the energy restraints, whereupon she attacks the A.I.M. agents in the giant lab. But her conditioning has been completed, and she freezes at the sound of MODOK’s voice, who orders her to kill the now-useless female agent wearing her costume. However, only Ms. Marvel’s persona has been enslaved; Carol Danvers remains free, and fights the conditioning until it breaks. Ms. Marvel begins the attack anew, discovering to her surprise that she can fly without the costume. She grabs the female A.I.M. agent, flying off to change back into her costume, and realizes that her recent exposure to the Kree Psyche-Magnitron radiation must have transferred the suit’s abilities to her own body.

The battle blasts holes in the walls, and Ms. Marvel finds a subway tunnel behind one of them. She escapes, finding A.I.M. agents that are not loyal to MODOK some distance down the tunnel. MODOK’s agents break off pursuit, placing priority on resealing the tunnel to hide their presence from the other A.I.M. division. Ms. Marvel escapes the A.I.M. base into Alden’s Department Store, where she transforms back into Carol Danvers, blending into the crowd of innocent shoppers. Carol leaves the store unnoticed, but is left wondering about the strange duality of her co-existence with Ms. Marvel and with a determination to settle the score with A.I.M.

Synopsis: Anti-detection equipment conceals an A.I.M. base’s disguised as a storefront. SHIELD, blaming Carol for faulty intelligence, evacuates, and Carol trudges off to meet Tracy Burke, a once-famous photojournalist who Carol hopes to convince to come out of retirement to become associate editor at Woman magazine. Carol then experiences a seventh-sense vision of an Air Force/FAA radar station on a beach consumed by a massive implosion.

The next day, Carol enjoys a stroll on the beach at Montauk Point with Dr. Barnett. They’re about to head back to Barnett’s beach house for dinner when they come upon the Air Force/FAA radar station Carol saw in her vision. Carol sneaks under the fence and finds the security officers unconscious. She transforms into Ms. Marvel and breaks into the station’s loading dock, discovering Grotesk inside. Equally astonished at meeting the other again, they quickly recover and start to fight. Ms. Marvel notices the station has a research lab that is testing a military laser cannon. Grotesk is using the cannon to fire energy into the Cavourite Crystal, which will cause the warp energy implosion she saw in her vision. Grotesk causes a hydrogen explosion that blows them out of the station into the water. He drowns her before returning to the station to regulate the energy flow into the Crystal.

Ms. Marvel survives the drowning attempt and renews the battle. An enraged, Grotesk attacks, unprepared. Ms. Marvel hurls him into the laser, causing the warp energy implosion that opens a gateway to another dimension. The gateway soon closes and the blast clears. Dr. Barnett finds Carol alone on the beach, everything except her and the Cavourite Crystal vaporized.

Synopsis: Flying home in the middle of a date after getting the premonition that her apartment was being burglarized, Ms. Marvel is attacked without warning by a winged female calling herself Death-Bird, who claims to be working for MODOK. The aerial battle carries them close to Carol’s apartment building, which Ms. Marvel sees is on fire. She pretends to be beaten so Death-Bird will leave, freeing her to save two children who would have died.

Ms. Marvel helps the fire department put out the fire, but it’s too late to save most of Carol’s apartment. Turning back into Carol, she’s heartbroken to find that the fire has ruined her only photograph of her past love, Air Force Colonel Michael Rossi, along with all of her other possessions. She also finds an unexploded incendiary bomb, proving that the fire was arson and that Carol’s apartment had been the target. Across the street, the arsonist, a man named Ballard, reports the details to a man on the phone codenamed Alpha.

The next day, Carol has a rough morning in the Woman magazine editorial offices. Needing to get out, Carol heads to Alden’s Department Store, dressing like a dowdy sales clerk and sneaking into restricted areas of the store looking for the entrance to the A.I.M. base. Plainclothes A.I.M. agents assault her, and she flees through what’s marked as a fire exit but turns out to be an elevator that takes her down to the base. Before the A.I.M. agents there can interrogate her, an explosion rips through the wall and MODOK, his blue-suited A.I.M. agents and Death-Bird enter, choosing that moment to reclaim A.I.M.’s New York headquarters.

Synopsis: Hoping to escape the base during the chaos of the A.I.M. civil war, Carol keeps her head down and runs for cover, but she’s too late to prevent MODOK, who’s seen her unmasked face, from recognizing her. Death-Bird attacks her again, and while MODOK and his men press the attack on the enemy A.I.M. agents, Ms. Marvel and Death-Bird’s fight carries them up into Alden’s Department Store, causing instant bedlam.

MODOK bests his foes and takes control of A.I.M.’s missile complex in the South Bronx. He calls Death-Bird to his side, and she breaks off the fight while yellow-suited A.I.M. agents make targets of the police, buying time for their comrades below to evacuate the base. Ms. Marvel returns to the base to find a dying Mr. Elliot, A.I.M. agent and Alden’s store manager, who explains that A.I.M. had planned to take over Skylab, capture the Cavourite Crystal and learn the secret of interstellar flight. MODOK had the same plan and beat them to it, planning to use the South Bronx launch facility to shoot himself into orbit.

Ms. Marvel races to the launch facility, hidden inside a decaying warehouse, just in time to stop MODOK and Death-Bird from boarding the ICBM rocket on the launchpad. MODOK abandons Death-Bird and boards the rocket alone, and Ms. Marvel and Death-Bird engage in a fierce battle until the rocket’s engines fire. Death-Bird dives into the flames and Ms. Marvel seeks cover in the control room, shielded from the blast by the equipment. Once the rocket is in the sky, she simply presses the abort control and the rocket self-destructs. Ms. Marvel flies to Inwood Hill Park where MODOK’s escape capsule is parachuting down, but she’s astonished to find the capsule empty once it lands.

Synopsis: After weeks of inactivity, Ms. Marvel finally gets the chance to act again when she stops a bank robbery. But the early-morning fight, followed by the need for a change of clothing, makes Carol forty minutes late for work and the day goes downhill from there. Carol is so distracted that she forgets her trip to Cape Canaveral to cover the shuttle launch and Tracy Burke has to remind her.

At Cape Canaveral, Carol reunites with old colleagues she knew from her time working there as security officer, but some of them are cold to her after her space industry tell-all book disgraced a lot of their friends. Not among Carol’s detractors is Salia Petrie, acting as command pilot for this shuttle mission, an easy assignment consisting solely of taking supplies and the Cavourite Crystal up to Skylab. Moments after greeting Salia, Carol is struck with a seventh-sense premonition of the shuttle exploding and Salia falling unprotected into the atmosphere. Without more detailed information, though, Carol can’t stop the shuttle launch.

After the shuttle takes off, Carol stumbles away, fighting Ms. Marvel in her head as the Kree persona tries to take control. It’s a losing battle and Ms. Marvel flies to the Caribbean island of Saracen Cay, site of a NASA tracking station that Salia was calling in Carol’s premonition and also the site of a psychic cry for help.

On the beach, Ms. Marvel is immediately attacked by mystical soldiers that form out of the sand. Superheating them with a borrowed parabolic dish antenna from the tracking station, she’s then attacked by flame and the ocean itself. Fired back onto the beach, she just has time to realize the elements of earth, fire and water are attacking her when she meets the Elementals themselves, accompanied by their master, the Dark Angel Hecate, announcing that they’re here to retrieve the Ruby Skarab.

Synopsis: Ms. Marvel carries the attack to Hecate, recognizing her as the leader, and shrugs off the Elementals’ attack rather easily. Hecate conjures a Kree Warhawk out of thin air, a Class I battle armor forged from adamantine steel that Ms. Marvel reckons has enough power to level New York City. She defeats it by remembering a basic weakness of the armor involving heat dissipation.

While Ms. Marvel resumes battling Hecate, the treacherous Elementals return to the trees where they’ve tied up Miles Olddan, Richard Harper and Zephyr, reasoning that they can use the distraction Ms. Marvel is providing to claim the Ruby Skarab for themselves. Hydron tortures Zephyr until the men agree to tell them where the Skarab is. They return to the beach, Skarab in hand, and they use the power-boosting device to attack Hecate and Ms. Marvel together. But Hecate’s power is almost the Skarab’s equal, and while they Elementals are momentarily stunned from a massive blast, she explains to Ms. Marvel that the Skarab has the power to reshape a world and is deadly dangerous in the wrong hands. They team up to fight the Elementals.

Ms. Marvel defeats Hellfire and hears a distress call from Salia Petrie aboard the Athena One shuttle--the Cavourite Crystal has begun to glow and is disrupting all of their onboard systems. She realizes that Hecate’s and the Skarab’s power bolts are triggering the Crystal’s warp matrix, but rather than respond to Carol’s inner pleadings that she fly to the shuttle to save Salia, she remains on the ground to save the Earth.

Magnum’s megalomania leads him to defeat Hydron himself. Hecate, seeing Ms. Marvel sneaking up behind Magnum, pulls the image of N’Kantu, the Living Mummy, from his mind. Terrified by the sudden appearance of his arch-nemesis, Magnum is unprepared for Ms. Marvel’s relentless attack and he falls. Ms. Marvel changes back into Carol, now truly furious that her best friend has died, and she swears to use the Ruby Skarab that she now holds to make both Hecate and Ms. Marvel pay.

Synopsis: Carol Danvers brings Mike Barnett to her parents’ home in Boston, Massachusetts. While there, Carol recalls the end of her last battle, when, after defeating the Elementals, she turned her fury and grief-driven rage onto Hecate. But when Hecate pointed out that Carol was lifting a multi-ton boulder, Carol was forced to accept that Ms. Marvel’s persona was really not separate from her own. Overjoyed and feeling sane for the first time since she first transformed into Ms. Marvel, Carol thanked Hecate for helping her and felt ready to resume her life.

That night, Carol and Mike Barnett attend an Indian Summer Ball aboard the U.S.S. Constitution. Carol meets an old astronaut friend, Tom Boardman, but before they can discuss much more than the recent death of Salia Petrie, they hear the general quarters klaxon coming from the nearby nuclear aircraft carrier U.S.S. Halsey. Moments later, the huge carrier is rocked by an explosion, and everyone jumps into action. Carol turns into Ms. Marvel and flies to the Halsey, where she encounters two robotic beings, one large and bulky, the other human-sized and golden-colored, that coordinate their attack on her. The big one, named Sapper, is able to drain the life-force from Ms. Marvel and then fire the energy back at her in a force bolt, knocking her across the harbor. She counterattacks, but anything she does just provides Sapper with more energy to absorb.

She leaves Sapper momentarily stunned on the Halsey and returns to the Constitution, where she succeeds in breaking off the golden warrior’s hand at the wrist, revealing electronic circuitry. The creature claims to be a robot in body, but with a mind and soul as human as Ms. Marvel’s own. Sapper, having absorbed the energy on the Halsey and filled with more power than ever before, rejoins his comrade, but the golden warrior halts the battle due to his injury and they depart, leaving Ms. Marvel to wonder who they were and when they’ll turn up again.

Synopsis: Carol Danvers remains in Boston visiting her parents, and one rainy night saves her father Joe from falling girders at a downtown high-rise construction site where he’s one of the foremen. Maxwell Plumm, the owner/contractor, is cutting corners and using substandard building materials to save enough money to pay back a debt he owes to organized crime boss Dominic Varone. Carol realizes that her father’s integrity could cost him his life if he makes trouble for Plumm.

That same night, Tracy Burke and Frank Gianelli are working late in the Woman magazine offices when Gianelli surprises a burglar in Carol’s office and recognizes him as Ballard, the same man who torched Carol’s apartment. Ballard flees.

Later, Carol has a seventh-sense vision of a known villain called Steeplejack carjacking her father and killing him on the fortieth floor of the unfinished building. Recovering, she arrives just in time to stop Steeplejack from shooting Joe Danvers. She grabs him off the ledge and knocks him unconscious when he proves argumentative and insistent on fighting Steeplejack himself. Hiding her father’s body, Ms. Marvel puzzles over Steeplejack, a villain reported killed months earlier. Fighting him, she comes to suspect that it’s Maxwell Plumm himself in the costume. She saves both her father and Plumm just as the entire Monarch Plaza collapses.

Ms. Marvel delivers Plumm into police custody as crowds gather, including Carol’s mother. She reveals that she can see right through Ms. Marvel’s disguise and would recognize her firstborn anywhere. Carol remains disappointed that her chauvinist father is unable to accept her, but decides it’s not as important as she once thought.

Synopsis: Ms. Marvel drops in on her friend Dr. Michael Barnett for lunch as he’s entering a pizza place. While they eat, Barnett strikes a raw nerve when he asks Carol who she thinks the Psyche-Magnitron might have used as a template when it created Ms. Marvel. Carol hastily leaves, but Barnett is sure that that conversation is not over.

Later, Jean DeWolff arrives at the Woman magazine offices for a meeting with Carol Danvers and Frank Gianelli regarding the recent burglary in Carol’s office. Gianelli claims to have no information, but after DeWolff leaves, he confesses to Carol that the man’s name is Geoffrey Ballard, a high-ranking CIA agent he had met in Vietnam. He doubts that DeWolff has the authority to challenge anything Ballard might be doing.

Carol goes apartment shopping and meets with a friend of Gianelli’s named Arabella Jones. Arabella’s apartment is a mess, but it’s cheap and Carol takes a liking to it. Inspecting the garden area in the back, she’s surprised by a man that hurtles out of a nearby window and changes into Ms. Marvel in anticipation of trouble. The man turns out to be Wundarr, whose childlike reasoning drives him to attack Ms. Marvel. She punches him right back into the apartment he came out of, and inside finds Wundarr and his guardian, Annie Christopher, who explains that they were just assaulted by an intruder who kidnapped Annie’s friend Nita. Ms. Marvel pursues and quickly catches up to the kidnapper, who turns out to be Tiger Shark. During the ensuing fight, Tiger Shark’s comments cause Ms. Marvel to realize the identity of his captive: Nita is actually Namorita, Prince Namor’s cousin.

Tiger Shark hurls a car at Ms. Marvel and two children, and she takes the impact of the car to save them. By the time she extricates herself from the wreckage, Tiger Shark and Namorita have already made it to the ocean.
