2nd Highest Grade. Introduction of Qward Universe. Thomas "Pieface" Kalmaku learns Green Lantern's identity. (This is a very significant issue, mainly because Qward is a parallel universe and it is from the Weaponers of Qward that Sinestro ultimately acquires his yellow power ring. In fact, Green Lantern #2, #3, and #4 actually form a story arc of sorts about Qward and its evil inhabitants. This issue also introduces Thomas "Pieface" Kalmaku, Hal Jordan's mechanic.) STORY 1: Green Lantern learns from an escapee from Qward about the existence of an anti-matter universe in which the guiding principle is evil, and whose inhabitants wish to invade the Earth-One universe. STORY 2: When Hal Jordan finds out that his mechanic, Thomas “Pieface” Kalmaku, is quitting to return to his native Alaska, Green Lantern investigates and finds a gang of crooks in search of a gold mine.

Highest Grade (1 of 1). 1st appearance of Hector Hammond. (The first of Green Lantern's recurring villains who appears by himself and often in control of other villains. In this first encounter with the Lantern, he hyperevolves several other individuals to do his bidding. In later issues starting with GL #22, he himself becomes a hyperevolved, megagenius who is wheelchair-bound.) STORY 1: A group of scientists held captive and hyper-evolved by a man named Hector Hammond draws Pieface (changed by Hal Jordan into a duplicate Green Lantern) to them with a tractor-beam, hoping for his aid, but causes the ring to fly off his finger in the process.

3rd Highest Grade. 1st appearance of Tomar-Re. (Tomar-Re was the first non-Earth/Sector 2814 Green Lantern to be introduced by Kane et al. Also, a very difficult book to find in high grade.) STORY 1: With dangers simultaneously threatening his world and the planet of Aku, the Green Lantern of Xudar contacts the Green Lantern of Earth for help.

Highest Grade (1 of 1). Origin and 1st appearance of Sinestro. 1st appearance of Terga. (Sinestro was once Hal Jordan's instructor, however during an incident it was revealed that he was more of a dictator than a protector and was banished to Qward, where he found allies in the Weaponers who hated the Guardians and Green Lanterns as much as he did. They helped him fashion a yellow power ring which the Lantern's green power rings could not directly affect. This is a perfect example of how some of the earliest Silver Age issues were designed with story-related covers meant to draw in the prospective reader with curiosity about what was going on inside. Considering that this issue has the origin & first appearance of Sinestro, who would become Green Lantern's greatest foe, it is surprising that he appears nowhere on the cover. His first cover doesn't come until issue #9, and even then the first "good" cover IMHO doesn't arrive until #15.) STORY 1: A renegade ex-Green Lantern, Sinestro, exiled to Qward, teleports an entire city of Earth people to the anti-matter universe, and Green Lantern must rescue them. STORY 2: Hal Jordan dreams so intensely about turning Pieface into a bird that his Power Ring carries out the command, just as Terga, Thomas’s girlfriend, arrives from Alaska.

2nd Highest Grade. First 5700 A.D. story. Grey tone cover. (This was a ground-breaking issue where Green Lantern was brought into the future to fight a different kind of battle than he was used to, and a menace which the future inhabitants did not know how to handle.) STORY 1: Green Lantern is transported into the year 5700 A.D. and given a false set of memories so that he may, as the Solar Director of that time, help save humanity from a race of ray-blasting mutant gila monsters.

STORY 1: Sinestro, using a yellow power ring of his own creation, escapes his imprisonment and captures Green Lantern, telling him he intends to revenge himself on the Green Lantern Corps and the Guardians of the Universe. STORY 2: During a political campaign for Jack Jordan, whose brothers Hal and Jim give him all the help they can, reporter Sue Williams becomes convinced that Jim Jordan is secretly Green Lantern.

3rd Highest Grade. Sinestro appearance. (This issue has the third appearance of Sinestro, but again no cover art to entice the reader. Instead, the artist drew & inked a story-related cover. It wasn't until Sinestro's fourth appearance in GL #15 that IMHO, the cover artist got it right brilliantly. Nevertheless, this cover does effectively illustrate the amazing diversity of the galaxy's Green Lantern Corps.) STORY 1: For derelictions of duty, the Green Lantern Corps strips Green Lantern of Earth of his insignia and power ring, and exile him to Qward, where he falls into the hands of Sinestro. STORY 2: Green Lantern’s power ring falls out of a hole in Hal Jordan’s pocket and is found by a boy who idolizes the Emerald Gladiator.

Highest Grade. 1st Flash cross-over. Green Lantern and Flash reveal their IDs to each other. (A very important issue in that it was the first appearance of Flash in what would become an ongoing guest costar role. I think of the Flash & Green Lantern as kind of a ying & yang, similar to Hawk & Dove, but not created for that purpose as the latter duo was. This also became one of the better known early covers, recognizable immediately by Flash's bizarre, enlarged head.) STORY 1:Green Lantern becomes mind-controlled by aliens, and the Flash must find a way to free him from their dominance.

2nd Highest Grade. Origin and first appearance SONAR. (Another very important issue in that it introduced Green Lantern's third recurring villain, a caped foe with a tuning fork as a weapon. It is also the first cover where a specific new villain was introduced on the cover. This became much more common as the Silver Age progressed with such characters as Star Sapphire, The Tattooed Man, etc.) STORY 1: A villain who hopes to put his tiny country of Modora in the headlines strikes out at Green Lantern with sonic weapons of great power. STORY 2: Sue Williams sees an old green auto lamp in Jim Jordan’s house and becomes convinced that is his Power Battery. In the meantime, Hal’s ring gets mistakenly exchanged for a fraternity ring of Jack Jordan’s, and a millionaire auto collector kidnaps Jim to get his lamp.

Highest Grade. Sinestro appearance. (This is only the second cover with Green Lantern's greatest arch-nemisis, Sinestro. IMHO, this is the only truly superb early Silver Age Sinestro cover by Gil Kane et al. and also one of the greatest ever. It's extremely effective in that it shows the story, as well as putting front & center the nemesis.) STORY 1: Green Lantern becomes convinced that his old foe Sinestro is loose and attacking him from afar. But, when trailing him to the universe of Qward, he is lured into a world where everything but its inhabitants is colored yellow. STORY 2: In a city near Cape Canaveral, Green Lantern must face off a band of armed robbers while he believes his Power Ring is out of power.

Highest Grade (1 of 1). Origin and first appearance of Silver Age Star Sapphire. Abin-Sur backup story. (Probably the second favorite and most well-known of Green Lantern's enemies, Star Sapphire was also the 'evil' side of his love interest, Carol Ferris, her power bestowed on her by the Zamarrons.) STORY 1: Carol Ferris is abducted by a band of alien Amazons who wish to crown her their queen Star Sapphire, but she refuses to leave without Green Lantern. So they endow her with a gem of power and mentally induce her to defeat him in battle. STORY 2: Green Lantern tells Pieface about the case in which his predecessor Abin Sur battled an energy-being in the conflict that ultimately led to his death.
