The cover to the premiere issue of Web is an "amazing" painting by Charles Vess that shows Spider-Man wearing the Alien Symbiote Costume.
This issue featured the final attempt by the Symbiote to bond with Spider-Man. Using the Symbiote's weakness to sound, our hero fled to a church tower where the tolling of the bells was thought to have killed the creature. However, the Symbiote survived and would later bond with Eddie Brock to become Venom, one of Spider-Man's most popular villains.

Continuing with the Silver Age "deja vu", the Vulture breaks out of prison to lay a beat-down on the imposter Vulturions. Any guesses as to how this ends? :)

Doctor Octopus during his arachnaphobia phase... And in another Silver Age flashback, Ock's separated arms break him out of jail, a la ASM #88. Is it just me, or does this title really seem to be borrowing heavily from the Lee/Romita years?

This issue ties into Secret Wars II and finds Spidey busy saving lives in the aftermath of the Beyonder turning a skyscraper into solid gold. In the meantime, the Kingpin has offered to "assist" the government in dealing with the economic consequences of all that gold.
Disappointed by seeing a federal agent dealing with the city's most notorious crimelord, Spidey helps himself to a little bit of bling to aid Aunt May with the bills.

"Oh, Bobby, it was awful! When I woke up, I thought that you were dead... I had a nightmare, a terrible nightmare."
I often wonder if the writers of Dallas were inspired by this issue of Web, since the entire season that followed it was all a dream too...

Part 2 of the "Vigilante & Victim" storyline that sees our hero taking on a gang of thugs in his civilian identity. After having his apartment vandalized, Peter presses charges against the gang members involved. They retaliate by getting a hitman to take out Mr. Parker. Spidey comes to the rescue just as the gang has a change of heart. Peter drops the charges and everything goes back to normal.
A bit of a confusing storyline. Reminds me of one of those sitcoms where, once the dust settles, everything is exactly the same as at the start of the episode...

This issue makes for an interesting morality / perspective debate. JJJ and Spidey get to have a nice little head-to-head over their respective motivations and interpretations of each other's actions. A good read if nothing else...

Part 2 of "All That Glitters" which finally sees Spidey overcome his guilt about lifting a gold notebook from the Beyonder's skyscraper back in Issue #6. He ultimately pawns it for the cash to help out Aunt May with Nathan's medical bills.
Outside the moral dilemma plotline, our hero is also trying to track down the jewel thief, Black Fox. However, he has to contend with interference from Chance who is also looking for the Fox and has wagered his employer that he can kill Spider-man within 24 hours.

Part 2 of "Missing in Action".
It turns out that Magma is working for Roxxon (big surprise) and is using the kidnapped boy's gifts to develop a satellite based weapon. Needless to say, Pete/Spidey manages to rescue all the innocents. In the final battle with Magma, our hero goes missing after an explosion and cave-in. The closing shot - a smouldering red and blue costume...

Part 3 of "Missing in Action".
After escaping the destruction of Magma's hideout, Pete starts out back to NYC only to get arrested for Grand Theft Pie. Which of course leads to an evil sheriff running a human-hunt, reminiscent of the Van Damme classic "Hard Target".
This comic is more famous as the uncredited first appearance of Venom, who appears as the shadowy figure that pushes Pete in front of a subway train without triggering his Spider-Sense.

The return of that slippery rascal, Slyde! Of course our hero manages to foil Slyde's attempted robbery. More interesting is that Peter and Aunt May are planning a little junket to Atlantic City where the Vulture is seen circling. Looks like good ole Adrian is going to be putting in an appearance soon...
