Hey There Boost Buddy!
Published: 2/86
Key Issue: 1st appearance of Booster Gold & Skeets. Blackguard appearance.
Dan Jurgens story
Dan Jurgens & Mike DeCarlo art
I was in Panama City, Florida when I met Booster Gold & Skeets for the first time. To me they were extremely interesting characters in the DC universe, different from the other heroes in that they rescued people for the fame and glory it brought them rather than just because it was the right thing to do.
Don't get me wrong, they were definitely the good guys at heart but always looked for advantages to further their popularity and pocketbooks in all their actions. Very different at the time.
Booster and Skeets were stationed in Metropolis, which, of course, brought them into direct contact with Superman eventually, but not until a few issues into the series due to Supes being otherwise occupied at the time.
Booster would go on to make many, many appearances in the justice league (later kicked out), the 52 series, and the whole Infinite mess that keeps on popping up.
He has recently been forced into a much more noble role in the DC universe than he is comfortable with. But thems the breaks, Bud!
In This Issue: We very subtly learn that Booster and Skeets apparently come from some future time. We also learn of Booster's many different focuses, such as a movie deal, trying to get in touch with the Justice League, being in a comic book (ha), and working on a personalized car.
While all this is going on, he and Skeets have a battle with Blackguard and a bunch of flunkies after nearly being demolished on the road by the bad guy's armored vehicle.
They defeat Blackguard in the presence of news crews and onlookers (always desired by Booster), and find out that the bad guys had just robbed STAR Labs (Name later used in the 1990's The Flash TV Series) of a Satellite Guidance System and were making their getaway.
In the process of returning the device(also in the presence of newscasters), he is attacked and supposedly paralyzed in front of STAR Labs by a strangely clothed woman.
We also learn in this first issue that Booster is in possession of a Legion Ring and that someone is out to discover exactly who he is.

I picked up my original copy of this issue at the Book Bin II in Panama City, Florida, and after reading #1 (also acquired at the same store) I Immediately dug into this one. Along with issues 3, 4 & 5 I must have read them half a dozen times while in Panama City that summer in '86.
I made sure to get the rest of the issues as they came out after that!
In This Issue: We learn that the mysterious woman has made off with the guidance system while Booster is paralyzed. While the press badger him for info, he manages to overcome the mental and physical paralysis and get up. with the help of his friend Dr. Klyburn he manages to answer a few questions and leave to rest and assess what to do.
We learn that the woman's name is Mindancer, and that she is currently in the employ of a group called "The 1000", who have an underground facility beneath Centennial Park. The "director" of this organization accepts the guidance system and gives Mindancer a new job. Free Blackguard from maximum security and bring him back for discipline in regards to his failure.
Booster and Skeets speak with their secretary, Trixie, and then get a talking down to by Booster's PR guy, Dirk Davis. Dirk pisses off Booster and nearly gets canned. Booster's morale is down as he goes back to his penthouse.
We meet another mysterious lady who is attempting to learn of The 1000's whereabouts.
Booster films a commercial, gets another talking down to by his creative director, Ms. Rose Forrest, and is in talks about the comic book deal outside when the alarm at the nearby prison goes off. Double trouble, it's Mindancer and the just "liberated" Blackguard!
We learn that Booster has a force shield of some sort.
While Trixie deals with a mob of people wanting to speak with Booster on a variety of issues back at the office, Booster and Skeets take on the very dangerous duo with the cameras rolling. This will be make or break for Booster as far as the press goes! Skeets keeps Mindancer busy while Booster takes down Blackguard in an agreed upon strength vs strength fist fight.
Then he goes after Mindancer just as Skeets realizes that they have to isolate her from large groups of people. She draws from their minds for her mental powers. She knows she's in trouble, and since she can't penetrate Booster's force shield, she makes a nearby prison guard think he's seeing dragons and just as he's about to fire at the film crew, Booster grabs the gun and stops him.
But while he was distracted by the guard, a somewhat recovered Blackguard hurls his energy mace at Skeets gets a direct hit!........
The person attempting to find out who Booster really is finds no records of any kind about him and determines to back him into a corner to reveal who he is.

All right, this is THE FIRST ISSUE I ever laid my eyes on of this series. I was in a convenience store in Panama City, just gettin a cold drink, when I looked over and saw an old style rotating metal rack (you know the kind I mean) and this issue was in the front of one of the slots, staring me in the face.
My dad and I had just started getting into comics, and let me tell you, I was a moth to the flame on this one. The cover was fantastic, and to this day is still my favorite booster gold cover. In other words, THIS cover sold me on Booster Gold more than anything else.
I'm so glad I've got a copy of this graded at this level. It is currently one of only two copies in 9.8 in the world!
This issue will NEVER leave my hands until the day I die. :)

If you haven't read my previous descriptions of the first 3 issues, go back and do so.
If you have read them then I will tell you that this issue was immediately behind the #3 on that metal rack. While the cover on this one didn't hit me like the #3 issue, It had a lot of action going on in it. Enough to get me to glance through the issue and find out that this was a series I would like to get the others of.

This was the most recent issue released when I came across 3,4 & 5 in that convenience store in june of '86. It was behind the other two on that rack and also had an interesting cover.
After glancing through all three issues in that store, My father and I went on the search right there in Panama City for the first two. We found them in the first store we went into, the Book Bin II. I started reading them as soon as I got back to the beach house.
And never looked back in my comic interests.

Key Issue: Superman appearance.
This was the first issue to come out after I got back from Panama City on my family's summer trip. I couldnt wait for it to come out. I had read the first five over & over & over until I was bursting at the seems for the next issue.
I was even more pleased when I found out by just looking at the cover that this was an origin issue AND had Superman in it. This was where some of the other DC super heroes began taking real notice of Booster & Skeets.
